Freeway Series, Episode V: The Dodgers Strike Back
Tonight the Dodgers will again be taking on the Angels, looking for revenge after a tough loss yesterday. The Dodgers have only lost 13 of their last 18 games against the Angels, including 8 of their last 9 at Angel Stadium. The Dodgers are unbeaten in their last seven series, going 5-0-2, but if they lose tonight their unbeaten streak will be over. The last time the Dodgers lost a series was when the played the Angels at home in LA.
Jeff Weaver makes his first start since May 20th, and he will be facing off against his brother Jered Weaver. They will be the eigth set of brothers to start against one another in a major league game. Here's the full list of brother vs. brother matchups via Retrosheet:
| Brothers | Times | Most Recent |
| Alan and Andy Benes | 1 | 2002 |
| Ramon and Pedro Martinez | 1 | 1996 |
| Greg and Mike Maddux | 2 | 1988 |
| Joe and Phil Niekro | 9 | 1982 |
| Pat and Tom Underwood | 1 | 1979 |
| Jim and Gaylord Perry | 1 | 1973 |
| Jess and Virgil Barnes | 5 | 1926 |
Weaver will be looking for the first win in June by a non-Billingsley Dodger starter. The Dodgers' starters are currently 0-6 with a 4.10 ERA in 63.2 IP over 13 games.
Here's the lineups for tonight's game:
I don't think I need to mention the absurdity of having the player with the highest wOBA on the team who is not suspended bat 9th. At least there's no back-to-back lefties this time. Baby steps, people.

I’m sure you mean Alan and Andy Benes as the first set of brothers, not Barnes.
Calder Holbrook
Very quiet here today.
Maybe because of the weather/weekend.

seems odd doesn't it?
odd that there was only one of these hermono y mono match ups prior to the Modern Era
Yeah
You’d think it would happen more, especially when there were less teams in the league.

This is gonna be a long night
Weaver will get hammered, and little brother is pitching really well
We're going to have to score runs tonight, no doubt.
Hopefully Weaver is in line for a bad start tonight
Thank goodness Abreu is overweight and passed his prime.

Yeah
Giving a badly struggling pitcher a free out is dumb.

Pierre's OPS
Is finally below .800. It’s down to .799 after the flyout.

I wonder how long
The talking heads will keep saying he has been amazing this year.

I'm only watching on gameday
Seems liek the first two were both hit hard.

Hmm
Not liking the whole give up a run an inning thing.

Ryan Madson has just imploded
He blew another lead tonight. The Phils were up 5-3 in the 9th, now they’re down 6-5. :-)

Out come the boo birds in Philly. Phillies have lost 12 of 13 interleague home games – really just shows how hot they were last postseason – not good (not saying they aren’t good, but you catch my drift)
And they lost today
They are really falling apart right now.

I still want to see other guys get AB's though
There’s no reason a guy like A.J. Ellis should come up here and sit for a week. Loretta isn’t that good, he doen’t need every at bat off the bench.

SEATTLE — The Mariners’ worst fears were confirmed on Saturday concerning left fielder Endy Chavez.
An MRI exam revealed that Chavez, who had to be carted off the field following a collision with shortstop Yuniesky Betancourt during Friday’s game against Arizona, has a significant ACL tear in his right knee and will miss the remainder of the season.
Video in the link. Warning, its brutal to watch.
That was a big DP
And now we’re out of the inning.

I gotta stick up for the Angels announcers
Rory is a good guy, the voice of SC hoops, and is clearly dispondent. Physioc is a good guy as well – he’s family to a friend of mine and has gotten us some great seats for Dodger / Angel games. One time he got us all press passes and I got to meet Vinny.
They might be great guys
I just don’t really care for their announcing though.

Great
Another out given away. Come on Joe.
by Brendan Scolari on Jun 20, 2009 7:27 PM PDT reply actions
Can't blame Joe there
Pierre has the green light whenever he wants I bet
Yeah
We’ve been giving away way too many outs lately. Whether it’s caught stealing, trying to take an extra base on a throw, failed hit and runs, or bunting…

Anyone seen the White Sox game?
The Sox jerseys look terrible.

Three hits this inning and still no runs.
by Brendan Scolari on Jun 20, 2009 7:31 PM PDT reply actions

Otherwise, not too big of a deal.

Did Torii bobble it or something?
by Brendan Scolari on Jun 20, 2009 7:36 PM PDT up reply actions
no, clean pick and throw.
the SS? bobbled the relay if anything… but it looked like andre was already going to be safe.
by MaxDSterling on Jun 20, 2009 7:38 PM PDT up reply actions
Great inning -
We knew we needed runs tonight, so far so good
Lets hold the 3 run lead this time.
Sound good?
by Brendan Scolari on Jun 20, 2009 7:37 PM PDT reply actions
Vinnie is making a great point
what in the world was Scoscia thinking pitching to Andre over Loretta. I don’t care of Andre is cold and Loretta singled last ab – that’s a no brainer
True
I guess he just didn’t want the bases loaded so Weaver had no breathing room. But you are right, it was a dumb decision.
by Brendan Scolari on Jun 20, 2009 7:43 PM PDT up reply actions
And Weaver is through 5
Hopefully he gets the win. :-)

Jered Weaver's final line tonight:
2.53 ERA, 10 hits, 6 ER, 3 walks, and 4 strikeouts.
We just murdered him tonight.
Urgh, Figgins triple.
If not for Weaver, that had a chance for Figgins to get a inside the park homerun.
no wonder the bullpen works so much..
torre always pulls his pitchers not named billingsley after five
Dodgers - 2008 NL West Champions
Cardinals - 2008 NFC Champions
Weaver's been a long reliever
so making it into the 6th with only 2 runs giving up is plenty good enough. I don’t think he wants to push his luck here.
I knew we could go toe to toe with the Angels, and the difference would be luck/bull-pen—we are not safe yet believe me!
Off the cuff—I hate to see a great blogger get flayed by big media. But I can’t even find my posts at Dodger Thoughts during game time. It still is a great place to get Dodger news most of the time.
it's pretty easy to
keep up when there’s a new post announcement in the thread. i know he’s trying to keep things flowing and said they should have the page delay fixed next week. but it’s fun to come here too with quick post and reply, too.
Its really is easier to comment on true blue than it is on DT nowadays though.
True Blue dies out when there’s no gamethread though.
Btw, I was probably not only one
to incorrectly predict which Weaver bro would last the longest tonight. ;-)
Well done, Jeff!
would you be?
after all that? i’m sure he could’ve finished the inning
by MaxDSterling on Jun 20, 2009 8:05 PM PDT up reply actions
It’s amazing how Belisario is our go to guy in the bullpen, didn’t see that coming in March.

Does it need to be said that this at bat is big?
Look at that, he hit the f*cking bull! Guy gets a free steak!
He's a gamer!
He probably wanted to finish what he started.
He got pulled right after the triple to Figgins. Left on a bad note, even if you got a good result after that, you might feel a bit shitty letting that happen.
Side is struck out!
And out win expectancy hovers around 90%
Too bad Weaver couldn’t make the quality start.

4 strike outs for Beili.
I don’t care if he only has one pitch. I want to see what he can do starting. :)
Ethan Martin?
He was being compared to Kershaw just a month ago (similar stats in first 30 inning)
Since then he has fallen off big time
He's not as good as Kershaw
He could be quite good though.
