Freeway Series, Episode V: The Dodgers Strike Back

Tonight the Dodgers will again be taking on the Angels, looking for revenge after a tough loss yesterday. The Dodgers have only lost 13 of their last 18 games against the Angels, including 8 of their last 9 at Angel Stadium. The Dodgers are unbeaten in their last seven series, going 5-0-2, but if they lose tonight their unbeaten streak will be over. The last time the Dodgers lost a series was when the played the Angels at home in LA.

Jeff Weaver makes his first start since May 20th, and he will be facing off against his brother Jered Weaver. They will be the eigth set of brothers to start against one another in a major league game. Here's the full list of brother vs. brother matchups via Retrosheet:

Brothers Times Most Recent
Alan and Andy Benes 1 2002
Ramon and Pedro Martinez 1 1996
Greg and Mike Maddux 2 1988
Joe and Phil Niekro 9 1982
Pat and Tom Underwood 1 1979
Jim and Gaylord Perry 1 1973
Jess and Virgil Barnes 5 1926

Weaver will be looking for the first win in June by a non-Billingsley Dodger starter. The Dodgers' starters are currently 0-6 with a 4.10 ERA in 63.2 IP over 13 games.

Here's the lineups for tonight's game:

I don't think I need to mention the absurdity of having the player with the highest wOBA on the team who is not suspended bat 9th. At least there's no back-to-back lefties this time. Baby steps, people.

I’m sure you mean Alan and Andy Benes as the first set of brothers, not Barnes.

seems odd doesn't it?

odd that there was only one of these hermono y mono match ups prior to the Modern Era

Yeah

You’d think it would happen more, especially when there were less teams in the league.

This is gonna be a long night

Weaver will get hammered, and little brother is pitching really well

Thank goodness Abreu is overweight and passed his prime.

Yeah

Giving a badly struggling pitcher a free out is dumb.

Pierre's OPS

I guess he could get a couple hits tonight, but it’s fallen under .800, never to return IMO

I really wish Kong had had some better swings last night – b/c I knew if he didn’t we’d go back to Loretta tonight. Hopefully he gets another chance tomorrow, or the X Man comes back sooner then later.

SEATTLE — The Mariners’ worst fears were confirmed on Saturday concerning left fielder Endy Chavez.

An MRI exam revealed that Chavez, who had to be carted off the field following a collision with shortstop Yuniesky Betancourt during Friday’s game against Arizona, has a significant ACL tear in his right knee and will miss the remainder of the season.

Video in the link. Warning, its brutal to watch.

That was a big DP

And now we’re out of the inning.

by Brendan Scolari on Jun 20, 2009 7:20 PM PDT reply actions

I gotta stick up for the Angels announcers

Rory is a good guy, the voice of SC hoops, and is clearly dispondent. Physioc is a good guy as well – he’s family to a friend of mine and has gotten us some great seats for Dodger / Angel games. One time he got us all press passes and I got to meet Vinny.

True

I guess he just didn’t want the bases loaded so Weaver had no breathing room. But you are right, it was a dumb decision.

Weaver's been a long reliever

so making it into the 6th with only 2 runs giving up is plenty good enough. I don’t think he wants to push his luck here.

I knew we could go toe to toe with the Angels, and the difference would be luck/bull-pen—we are not safe yet believe me!

Off the cuff—I hate to see a great blogger get flayed by big media. But I can’t even find my posts at Dodger Thoughts during game time. It still is a great place to get Dodger news most of the time.

He probably wanted to finish what he started.

He got pulled right after the triple to Figgins. Left on a bad note, even if you got a good result after that, you might feel a bit shitty letting that happen.
