Rank the Dodgers relievers
Ranking the Dodgers relievers through June. I got a couple of my favorites, and Torre got some of his favorites. Maybe one day they'llmeet up. :)d
1. Jonathan Broxton - Easily number one, he's the closer, the guy who stirs the drink, throws a 100 MPH fastball. And going force the Dodgers to pay his rotundness a lot of cash next year.
2. Ramon Troncoso - You can't go wrong picking Troncoso or Belisario 2nd. Troncoso gets the 2nd pick because of a couple of reasons. He was supposedly the last pitcher chosen for the roster, and now he's the 8th inning/backup closer. And he's been money this year outside of a couple implosions.
3. Ronald Belisario - You heard the stories already. He was scouted out of winter ball. Great stuff, poor makeup. Throws 96 MPH bowling balls, had several different nicknames including Pumpkin Head. Also tried to throw a wild pitch during an intentional walk. There's concerns that Torre is trying to kill his arm, but Ronald knows the score. I'm sure if you ask him if the choice was between Torre overusing him, or the Dodgers pushing him down the depth chart because he can't be used as much, he'll choose the first option. Because if there's one thing, Torre's loyal to his guys.
4. Brent Leach - First lefty, and a guy I really feel should be used more. I understand why Torre doesn't want to use him most nights. He's the only lefty in the bullpen at the moment, and he doesn't want to be caught flat footed against a lefty-lefty matchup. But he simply needs to pitch more. Leach only pitched 13.1 innings, and he's been on the roster since May 6th. If you're worried that Broxton, Troncoso, and Belsario's innings count, you should hope that Torre simply uses Leach a bit more. One odd thing about Leach this year, lefties are actually hitting better against him over right handers.
Right handers: .448 OPS(28 PA) , left handers: .741 OPS(26 PA)
5. Jeff Weaver - I admit, I was scratching my head when the Dodgers decided to throw Jeff Weaver a bone in the off season and give him a minor leauge contract and an opptunity in spring training. Obviously it wasn't going to cost the Dodgers much, but he's Jeff Weaver. I'll just say his upside isn't as high as a guy like Ronald Belisario. But suprisingly, he pitched pretty well considering the circumistances. Long relief, spot starter, etc. A jack of all trade and masters of none he is, but hey. He's Jeff Weaver, and he pitched way better than I expected.
6. Cory Wade - Simply not the same pitcher he was last year. Last year, it was Ramon Troncoso on the short stick, and this year is Wade. That said, he seems to be a bit unlucky this year, Fangraphs has his ERA(Before the White Sox game where he gave up 4 ERs, so the info will be a bit outdated.) At 4.68, but his FIP at 3.62
Remember that thing about Torre being loyal to his guys? That's Wade there. Other guys Torre would pull on a drop of a hat, guys with better stuff like Troncoso and Belisario early in the season, Torre will leave in to struggle. That's not Wade's fault though, that's on Torre not realizing or not caring that Wade can't finish the job without being roughed up.
7. James McDonald - Just called up, and first appearance he goes 2 and 2/3 innings with one earned run on a home run by Josh Field. I wasn't able to see the game so I can't tell how well he really did pitch, but that seems encouraging to me. His job as is is to be the new long man, which Weaver hasn't been lately. Will the Dodgers let him do that though? There's rumors that McDonald will be sent down to activate either Milton or Stults.
8. Guillermo Mota - This guy. While he pitched better than he has to start the season. He's still Mota. He's a guy who should have been a NRI, and instead Ned Coletti somehow thought he was worth $2.3 million. Mota's has some positives, he can throw a 94 MPH fastball. His reputation as a crap pitcher forces some of the batters he faces to underestimate him, and ground weakly. And he had a scoreless streak for a while until he gave up a homer to Juan Rivera on Friday.
That said.
I wouldn't mind if he was DFAed this moment.
9. Will Ohman - Oh-man, last I heard he's scheduled for a MRI. Has an option for $1.5 million next year, and the only way it doesn't get exercised if he's hurt. I like Ohman, but he's no good for anybody hurt.
10. Scott Elbert - Was in the bullpen for a couple of weeks, Dodgers decided that wasn't for him, and decided to put him back in the starting rotation in the minors. Was just promoted to Triple-A, and is rumored it was done to allow other teams to see how Elbert does against tougher competition so they can scout him in any trades.
11.Hong-Chin Kuo - He's been on the DL since April 29th. Haven't much from him, and what we had isn't encouraging. He'll finally be arbitration eligble next year, but I imagine the Dodgers will offer him a contract if he can pitch. Has gone on record that he'll retire before going under the knife again.
12.Travis Schlichting - Used only twiced, and then shipped off to Triple-A to make room for McDonald. He'll probably come back up in Sept.

Nice list
Agreed on Leach; he should be used more.
I also think Ohman will end up alright, once he is healthy.
I would maybe rank Weaver above Leach…he’s been proven to be more versatile and have the ability to go for long innings.
And as little faith as I have in Mota, he has picked up his game a little bit when compared to the first two months.
Yes, Weaver can go longer and is more versatile than Leach, but couldn’t you say the same thing about Broxton? Weaver is more versatile and has the ability to go for longer innings than Broxton, but that doesn’t make Weaver a better reliever of course. Leach is not a middle reliever (as Weaver is) he is a set up man essentially or a LOOGY, so ranking Weaver above Leach because Leach can’t throw as many innings is comparing apples and oranges.

Agree completely on the first 4
After that, I’m basically on board with Weaver at 5 (nobody is clearly better on that list.) I would argue both McDonald and Mota should be above Wade at this point. It’s no longer “Wade was good just a few weeks ago” and its now been several months of ineffectiveness. Also, McDonald’s struggles have come in the rotation, yet I think he’s been pretty effective in the bullpen. Even early in the year when Torre schedule JMac to miss a start and he pitched out of the pen, he’s been fairly solid.
As for how McDonald looked last night. I thought he looked pretty good. In fact, one batter he faced Lyons made a comment about the hitter than JMac basically told him “welcome to the majors” with the way he pitched him. It’s nice for McDonald to be on the other side of that exchange. Struck out a few batters including getting AJ Pierzynski on a 3-2 tailing fastball and got him to chase. Great pitch. He gave up the homerun, but really who didn’t? Plus, with McDonald, I’ll take the occasional homerun. He will be a pitcher who gives up fly balls, in a stadium like Comiskey last night with the ball flying out of there, those sort of things are just going to happen. McDonald has pitched well out of the pen, I don’t think he’s the weak link who should be sent down for Vargas.
Elbert Rumor
Tripon, where did you read, or hear, that the reason Elbert was promoted to Triple A is so other teams can get a look at him facing tougher competition? I have seen no such rumors in writing. I find it hard to believe the Dodgers would part with him. I think he is going to be a left-handed version of Billingsley. My suspicion is that the Dodgers would part with McDonald before Elbert, because of McDonald’s lower ceiling, and because we have more right-handed pitching prospects than lefties.

The Dodgers promoted Scott Elbert to AAA Albuquerque on Tuesday. Elbert has made it all the way back from shoulder surgery two years ago, and has been dominant at AA Chattanooga. Elbert, who had a shot to make the Dodgers bullpen out of spring training, was back to starting in AA, where he was 2-3 in 11 starts with a 3.90 ERA. In 62+ innings, he struck out 87, but walked 30. In his last 5 starts at AA, covering 29 innings, he struck out 47 and walked 15.
The Dodgers appear to be showcasing Elbert for a potential deal with the promotion to AAA yesterday. It is also no coincidence that GM Ned Colletti travelled to see Elbert pitch last week, and saw him strikeout 10 and walk 5 in 5 innings of work.
The Dodgers could package Elbert and McDonald with low A SS Dee Gordon who has recently received praise from bothe Baseball America and Baseball Prospectus as one of the rising Dodgers prospects. BP’s Kevin Goldstein goes as far as saying that Gordon is the Dodgers best prospect, and says his ceiling is Jimmy Rollins.
The website just culls news from other websites, so he didn’t make up the Scott Elbert news.
Although that trade of Elbert, McDonald and Dee Gordon is just idle speculation.
Looks like he made it up to me.
The only real news is Elbert being promoted to AAA and Ned doing a trip around the farm to see what he’s got. The idea that Elbert is being showcased was simply conjecture. It may or may not be true but no data supports his premise.

One more point as I completely monopolize the comments of your fanpost; I am totally bummed with how the season went down for Kuo. Before the season I would have said (without hesitation) that I thought Kuo was a better reliever than Broxton. Kuo is an amazing athlete who simply is unlucky with injuries. I wish him the best, but I wouldn’t be suprised if his career was over.
I'd rate Mota much higher, he's been very very good for a while now
to me he’s number four a head of Leach and Weaver. I think past prejudice is clouding judgment. He may have given up some inherited runners runners but as Eric noted those were tough situations. Leach has done well because Joe has spotted him wisely. The more he’s used the more his limitations will become apparent.
With Vargas coming up I’d rather see McDonald and Elbert getting rotation innings in AAA. With Weaver and Vargas as long men we don’t need them wasting time in the bullpen. Elbert does need to work on command issues so AAA is best for him right now.
Joe said they have not given up on Kuo pitching again this year so something must have been promising in his bullpen sessions.
i think i'd put mota at 6 between Weaver and Wade
He has been great for a while now, but don’t forget that most of his scoreless streak was in garbage time, as Torre was trying to rebuild his confidence. His first “pressure” appearance since that started was friday vs. the angels, and he gave up the game. He has electric stuff and is starting to command better, so i’d put him ahead of Wade. But Weaver and Leach have been much more productive in more important situations.

Don't confuse the starting Weaver with the relieving Weaver
These are what hitters are doing against him as a relief pitcher.
.327 .406 .527 .934
Not pretty. Not good.
Mota overall
277 .354 .438 .791
Mota last 28 days
.175 .195 .300 .495

Good list ...
and though Weaver and Mota haven’t really won me over either I’m starting to warm up to them. But they still make me nervous when they’re out there.
