3 Prospect Stars Of The Day 6/25/09

Three Stars of the Day 6/25/09

1. Scott Elbert - LHP - Albuquerque Isotopes (AAA)

Elbert made his debut start for the Isotopes a memorable one. In a rain shortened game, Elbert pitched six shutout winnings for his first win in AAA. Elbert was in dominant form, he struck out seven batters and walked just one. He allowed only one hit a single and both base runners were called out on the basepaths. Elbert induced seven groundouts against only two flyouts. He threw 82 pitches, 51 for strikes. Including his numbers in Double-A, Elbert has struck out 94 batters in 68.1 innings.

2. Clay Calfee - 1B - Arizona League Dodgers (Rookie A)

Calfee is a big first baseman from Texas drafted last year from Angelo State. After signing last year, Calfee was assigned to Ogden and he showed his propensity for power OPSing .757, an OPS carried mostly by his slugging percentage. This year, the Dodgers have assigned him to the Arizona Rookie League and he has been mashing very early in the season. In his last game, Calfee had a perfect day at the plate, going 3-3 with a Home Run and a double. Calfee also walked and scored twice. The Home Run was his second of the year and he has recorded a hit in each of the four games he has played in thus far. Nick Akins also hit his third Home Run in the 7-5 losing effort.

3. Jerry Sands - CF - Ogden Raptors (Rookie A)

Sands has a five game stint with Great Lakes earlier this season but struggled hitting just .118. He was demoted and was re-assigned to Ogden when short season ball started up. In his most recent game, Sands went 2-3 at the plate and he hit his second Home Run of the year. Sands also drew a walk and scored a run. Sands' Home Run was his second of the year and his two RBI gave him three on the year.

I thought you only profiled prospects?

Love the one walk and groundballs from Elbert.

Calfee is 23 right now in the low level rookie league.

Sands is only 21 but no I never thought of him as a prospect.

How many college hitters repeat rookie league and go on to do anything meaningful? I was taught a few years ago not to pay much attention to what happens in the rookie leagues. It is like Vegas.

Anyway I just found it interesting that you refuse to profile Luna but you profiled Calfee who has about a zero chance to ever get a major league at bat.

Eh

I still think of them as prospects. They aren’t AAAA types like Luna, Mitch Jones, Dee Brown, Stephen Randolph, or Luis Maza.

Calfee and Sands might be the lowest of the low on the prospect spectrum but they are far from AAAA status. Anyways, the whole three stars thing is just way to keep others updated on some of the younger guys in our system. I try to leave the real in-depth analysis to others. There’s no guide lines as to who “gets” profiled or not.

Lindblom

Was looking at some rosters and noticed that Linblom is on the ’Topes roster.

Here is the link confirming that…thanks to BHSportsGuy for the news (via Diamond Leung) earlier

Thanks

Interested to see if Lindblom continues to start in AAA or if he’s being moved into a relief role in anticipation of a call up.

Also good to see Guerra finally called up.

Now when is Russell promoted???

by ASUcruz on Jun 26, 2009 2:53 PM PDT up reply actions

I wonder if Russell and some others might get promoted in the next week or two, perhaps after some of the rookie league guys get placed in low-A after their initiation into the system.

by Eric Stephen on Jun 26, 2009 3:00 PM PDT up reply actions

That's

What I’ve been speculating. I figure that when Smith signs he’ll to Great Lakes and Russell will get the call.

by ASUcruz on Jun 26, 2009 3:08 PM PDT up reply actions

I'm anxious to see what Guerra does

he was a high draft pick who was set back by TJ surgery. If he has been able to remake himself into a above average relief pitcher that is much better then what his outlook was only a year ago. His walk rate last year was 14% and he’s got that down to below 10% while increasing his K rate to over 30%.

Now given his age and stuff he should have handled the kids and he did so I’m glad they skipped him to AA to see how his stuff works against his peers.

by meercatjohn on Jun 26, 2009 3:31 PM PDT up reply actions

Should start to see all sorts of moves very soon.

Pedroza, Russel need to move on.
Guerra just did but St. Clair shouldn’t be long for the Loons either.

Bastardo got moved up to AA and got pounded in his first start.

Castillo might be poised to also head to AAA. Time to shake the limbs and let some of the older guys go.

We will do a prospect checkup on July 1st and hopefully more moves will have been done by then. Get ready to start making up your revised top 15 as I’ll be doing mine in the July 1st roundup. Should be interesting.
