Around SBN: Dissecting Nick Diaz's Positive Drug Test

Andre Ethier hit his 15th homer last night, to go along with his 51st & 52nd RBI, putting him officially at the halfway point of a potential 30 HR, 100 RBI season. The club has played 77 games to date.

There have only been 20 such seasons in LA Dodger history. The last was Adrian Beltre's amazing 2004 season (48/121). Click the link above to see the full list.

In the club's first 35 years in Los Angeles, the Dodgers only had only six 30/100 seasons. Then along came Mike Piazza and Eric Karros. Karros tallied five 30/100 seasons, tying him with Gil Hodges and Duke Snider for the most such seasons in Dodger history. Piazza and Gary Sheffield had three each.

Sure, 30/100 may not be the best way to measure a player's value, but the numbers are a nice milestone to shoot for, and a reminder of the days of our baseball fandom infancy.

As of right now, Ethier is on pace for 32 HR and 109 RBI.

Andre Ethier is a Super Star Rising

Ethier has a lot going for himself. This guy is getting better by the minute. His numbers are going to get a big boost when Manny Ramirez comes back. Ethier comes through in a clutch. THE REAL DEAL !!

Top 10 finish in MVP voting?

if he finishs .275 32 HR and 109 RBI?

Best player on the best team

by matthewmafa on Jun 30, 2009 11:31 AM PDT reply actions

I doubt it, but I wouldn’t rule it out. Best player will be Manny, but he won’t garner any support. Bills should get CYA consideration but won’t cross over into MVP territory.

by Eric Stephen on Jun 30, 2009 11:37 AM PDT up reply actions

That’s why I said “consideration” :)

by Eric Stephen on Jun 30, 2009 11:45 AM PDT up reply actions

But if Ethier has any kind of Manny bump (again), his numbers will be even better, and could easily vault into the top 10, as he gets labeled is the catalyst, late-inning guy, etc.

A few more walkoffs wouldn’t hurt :)

D is hardly ever a consideration in MVP voting

by Eric Stephen on Jun 30, 2009 11:45 AM PDT up reply actions

Pedroia won the MVP last year, partly because of his D.

So did Pujols.

While it wasn’t built solely because of it, being more complete players over Justin Morneau, and Ryan Howard helped them win the award.

by Tripon on Jun 30, 2009 11:49 AM PDT up reply actions

I think most of the time the voting is based on defensive rep rather than defensive performance, and its always way down the priority list, used mainly to justify an offensive player.

Dylan Hernandez will be on ESPN 710 in a few minutes

A. Martinez’s first question: “Could Manny Ramirez spoil a good thing the Dodgers have going by coming back?”

by Eric Stephen on Jun 30, 2009 11:46 AM PDT up reply actions

They asked Dylan

if the Dodgers would give up Kershaw. What a ridiculous question. Dylan shot it down really well.

by silverwidow on Jun 30, 2009 11:59 AM PDT up reply actions

Kershaw is the 2nd best Starter right now.

Just what the heck would get they back for and improve the team.

by Tripon on Jun 30, 2009 12:01 PM PDT up reply actions

For the most part, Dylan seemed heroically patient during the interview, putting up with inanity. :)

by Eric Stephen on Jun 30, 2009 12:01 PM PDT up reply actions

I'm particularly interested

to see if Ethier’s batting AVG returns to career norms, and if his ISOs will still be just as great when that happens.

i read it wrong nevermind

by matthewmafa on Jun 30, 2009 11:54 AM PDT up reply actions

according to fangraphs, the value in dollars of Andre Ethier ($1.1) and James Loney($1.8) combined does not equal Rafael Furcals ($3.3)

by matthewmafa on Jun 30, 2009 11:59 AM PDT reply actions

It’s crazy how low he has dipped defensively, at least according to some of the metrics.

by Eric Stephen on Jun 30, 2009 12:04 PM PDT up reply actions

30/100

with less than 0.5 WAR would be amazing. He’s sitting at 0.2 right now, mostly due to his defense.
vr, Xei

by Xeifrank on Jun 30, 2009 1:00 PM PDT reply actions

Ouch

so according to WAR, Ethier is barely more valuable than Jaime Hoffmann.

Karrosian:Kardashian::Hair: …. , well, you know.

by David Young on Jun 30, 2009 1:35 PM PDT up reply actions

Just wondering

Hasn’t Ethier been a solid defensive player before this year?

by dodgerpreacher on Jun 30, 2009 1:51 PM PDT reply actions

Not in 2008 either

UZR/150
2009 -21.8
2008 -9.2
2007 4.0
2006 3.7

Interstingly, in 2009, he has only played RF, and has struggled. In 2008, his numbers were slightly better in LF than RF. However in 2007 his UZR was much better in right field than left field.

by Michael White on Jun 30, 2009 1:59 PM PDT up reply actions

fangraphs has 2008 at -7.1

Not great or even decent.

The big problem with Ethier just year is that he allows balls to pass by him in RF to allow hitters for triples and doubles instead of singles.

by Tripon on Jun 30, 2009 2:02 PM PDT up reply actions

RE: Fangraphs

Yes, it has Ethier at -7.1 for UZR, but for UZR/150 it was -9.2

by Michael White on Jun 30, 2009 2:30 PM PDT up reply actions

Very Good

UZR/150 for 2009 at 18.5.

Good for 2nd best in MLB (and best in the NL) after Franklin Guiterrez.

by Michael White on Jun 30, 2009 3:09 PM PDT up reply actions

normally i like UZR

but I refuse to believe Torii Hunter isn’t an above average center fielder. that’s absolute bull

by bucknellbruin on Jun 30, 2009 3:24 PM PDT up reply actions

Maybe UZR hates Ethier

for the reason that he doesn’t get to balls that other RFs get to, because the Bison is getting them instead. Ethier’s UZR is better when Lofton or Pierre is the CF and lower once Kemp is there. Or because when the Bison is roaming in CF, Ethier’s positioning in RF has changed – a few steps farther from the CF and a few steps closer to the foul line and/or stands cuts down the range a bit.

by David Young on Jun 30, 2009 3:24 PM PDT reply actions

that could be

although i’m surprised his arm strength is hurting him. Generally I feel that his range is average to below average, but that his arm is slightly above.

by bucknellbruin on Jun 30, 2009 3:27 PM PDT up reply actions

Excellent points

And that’s really the problem with defensive statistics. Way too many variables to definitively isolate.

by Michael White on Jun 30, 2009 3:28 PM PDT up reply actions

interesting WAR note

we discussed Slappy vs Brian Giles right when Juan was taking over left field…Giles’ WAR is currently dead last among all everyday players. Slappy is tied with, among others, Pedroia, Jason Bay, and Adam Jones.

who would’ve thought?

by bucknellbruin on Jun 30, 2009 3:30 PM PDT reply actions

or, as Tolstoy’s alternate title suggested, “WAR: What is it Good For?” :)

Will Vargas be activated tomorrow?

Time’s up as of July 1st. Unless they want to go with 13 pitchers, there isn’t anyone right now that deserves to go down.

They all pitched like their jobs were on the line last night. :)

J-Mac, especially

That was an incredible fastball from him.

by silverwidow on Jun 30, 2009 3:52 PM PDT up reply actions

I don't think it needs to be until Thursday

The first day of his minor league rehab was June 2, and the CBA allows for 30 days for a rehab assignment. Tomorrow (July 1) is the 30th day.

by Eric Stephen on Jun 30, 2009 3:52 PM PDT up reply actions

Good point

But is it some sort of CBA violation if the club chooses NOT to activate him anytime soon?

by silverwidow on Jun 30, 2009 3:53 PM PDT up reply actions

Well, they have to do something. They can opt to waive or release him, or try to convince him to go to the minors (Vargas needs to consent). But all signs seem to be pointing to him simply being activated.

by Eric Stephen on Jun 30, 2009 3:55 PM PDT up reply actions

He can’t though. They can’t keep him on the DL without his consent since his rehab is up, and he is healthy.

With someone like Schmidt, there are more legitimate reasons as to why rehab assignments have been stopped and restarted, etc.

by Eric Stephen on Jun 30, 2009 4:00 PM PDT up reply actions

Schmidt also has pretty much no other choice but to consent to staying on the DL. Not like anyone else is going to sign him in the condition he’s in. Perhaps other teams would question his character if he turned his back on the Dodgers after all the rehab they paid for.
