manny

I only recently got into baseball when i married a dodger fanatic... this past month i have learned alot and one thing i have to say is: TRADE MANNY!!! i love the dodgers now, and they are a TEAM.  it's not just the manny show... they really dont need him to win all the time.. and andre has really stepped up... get rid of manny, he detracts from the team... besides, pierre is doing awesome and deserves to play!

Welcome to baseball Bernadette

I hope you stick around, its a great sport, and frankly I can’t get enough.

I do not agree with your position on Manny though, since Manny is a much better baseball player than Juan.

I’m sure I’ll get killed for this one, but baseball isn’t really a team sport. I know that what I said is not factually correct, but it is not nearly a team sport to the degree other sports are. Each at bat really boils down to an individual contest between pitcher and hitter. To that effect, the best way to structure a lineup is to assemble as much talent as possible and then sit back and let them do their work. As such, Manny is a better player than Pierre and should start over him.

when you turn a double play, it involves a team, 3 players

by matthewmafa on Jul 1, 2009 3:48 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

While technically true

do you think that is the point Bernadette was making in the post? You don’t need camaraderie to turn a double play, you just need to execute the role you’ve probably done several thousand times in your lifetime already. I mean, the last baseball game I played was probably 10 years ago, but I still remember exactly what my responsibilities were on a double play at 2nd base or 1st base. To these guys, they’ve done it so many times that it’s like breathing.

And these responsibilities never change. In other sports (particularly basketball and football) you are dealing with infinite variables in which teammates make quick decisions regarding how to handle a certain play. In these instances, true teamwork is a factor. Knowing, or having an idea, of how your teammate will respond in a situation, which occurs is less than a second, is a real consideration.

This is also why deadline deals can pay immediate dividends in baseball. Compare that with football, where if somebody misses training camp- timing is off, audible calls are missed, etc. In baseball, all Manny had to do was show up in LA, and play.

camaraderie

one play in toronto where someone hit a groundball up the middle. torontos 2nd basemen at the time got the ball but his momentum was carrying him to far from first base so he slipped the ball to the shortstop who was in front of him by maybe 10 feet and the shortstop threw him out at first base

it was an unbelievable play

Okay, nice play I'm sure

but this sort of things is on the margins. Very little chance of that changing a season. More to the point, you wouldn’t unload a superior player (in this case Manny) for an inferior player (Pierre) in order to ensure that plays like that happen.

Baseball is a team sport ...

but I do get what mwhite is saying. Within the game as a whole there are individual battles, where the game pit’s player against player. But that’s where individual stats come to play. And we know that a single player’s success doesn’t always translate into a win for the team. So if the goal is to win as team, ideally, all of it’s moving parts (the players) should be working in harmony. That is the majority playing well together to reach the goal. A team win. But here I must repectfully disagree with Bernadette. Manny is a vital part of this team.

Bernadette welcome to the world of baseball junkies, is beautiful game.

manny

I will stick around,I’m married to a dodger nut! LOL, I was raised in Nebraska, the only thing we have is FOOTBALL! Alas, I find myself reading baseball stories, watching the MLB channel, joining these groups- and hubby isn’t even here! I am actually searching out baseball news on my own… I am officially a fan… I do get what you are saying about baseball not being a team sport- but it is. ALL team sports, basketball, football, polo have standouts and the teams rely on individuals however… the way it is SUPPOSED to work is that a standout helps the team win, because that is supposed to b what it’s about, the TEAM’s w-l record, not an individual’s stats. Obviously that’s not reality but… I still wish they’d trade him…. and I don’t think Pierre is quite as good a player but I admire his heart and effort and making the best of his chance. And yes, I do think, even with the over-payed pro’s (in every sport) camaraderie does play a part in how well a team does. Example? Dallas Cowboys… star receiver, good QB… you think their off-filed squabbles didnt affect the way the team played?

how about a compromise

put manny in until he gets a hit – then let pierre run for him and stay in for the rest of the game. if manny goes 0 for 4, let pierre start the next game.
