I kind of like Russ batting 2nd.

And I can’t believe Owings is still in the game.

by Eric Stephen on Jul 20, 2009 8:49 PM PDT reply actions

I don't see how he can improve

he’s always been a velocity pitcher. Topping out at 86 simply wont get it done

by Michael White on Jul 20, 2009 8:50 PM PDT up reply actions

Unless he can throw harder, he’s pretty much done. He probably gets 2 more starts or so to make sure.

by Eric Stephen on Jul 20, 2009 8:51 PM PDT up reply actions

Russ is a natural 2nd in lineup, hes going to have a great second half

Tons of protection, great swing if he can keep it compact, good speed, and awesome baseball knowledge, hell be a keeper there.

Maybe will poke a few out too, even though id rather just have him get on base for manny

NO NO NO

I think he was when he was with Bonds, on SF… look at career numbers

by Bulldogblue on Jul 20, 2009 8:59 PM PDT up reply actions

What do his career numbers have to do with anything?

Plenty of guys threw 95 mph in their prime. He then spent 3 years on the DL. Doesn’t sound like a prime candidate for roids

Its been Torre’s M.O. this year to stretch his starters as much as possible because of the short bench.

by Eric Stephen on Jul 20, 2009 9:26 PM PDT up reply actions

Because there is zero real evidence

that you can predict pitching injuries based on mechanics. Also those guys are a bunch of amateurs with no actual background in biomechanics.

They’re all “blah blah blah inverted W this”

[DELETED ZOMG NO POLITICS]

by bluemax on Jul 20, 2009 9:27 PM PDT up reply actions

Right I just saw you were from

Lookout Landing, and I know you guys were asshurt that they said Brandon Morrow had poor mechanics.

Zero evidence, sure, there are lot of components, doesn’t mean it’s not worth looking into. And if you try to quantify everything through empirical evidence, you are essentially slighting every coach to ever teach a kid how to swing or throw.

I don’t buy into either fully.

by Chad Moriyama on Jul 20, 2009 9:29 PM PDT up reply actions

It's not so much that I am asshurt

but more that I trust a guy like Graham at LL that there isn’t a way to prove the claims that DLM makes with the knowledge they have.

[DELETED ZOMG NO POLITICS]

by bluemax on Jul 20, 2009 9:31 PM PDT up reply actions

There isn't a way to prove anything...

…but how can you prove that coaches are valuable in that case? Are they also not worthless by that logic? There’s no empirical evidence thus far to show that certain hitting mechanics benefit hitters than others. No long-term study.

Yet, I ABSOLUTELY buy that certain pitching and hitting mechanics are better than others.

Their work is as interpretation of Marshall’s who has done biomechanic research, and he’s not invalidated because he’s a bitter old man.

by Chad Moriyama on Jul 20, 2009 9:34 PM PDT up reply actions

This is not true

there are always ways to prove things. That’s why we have science. But the stuff they are presenting as science has not been fully validated.

I’m not saying bad mechanics don’t lead to injuries, I’m saying it is not as easy to predict as those guys try to make it out with their pseudo science.

[DELETED ZOMG NO POLITICS]

by bluemax on Jul 20, 2009 9:36 PM PDT up reply actions

Which is why I said I don't buy into it fully

but to say it’s garbage is equally laughable in my opinion.

People who espouse things like that as absolute truth are questionable, but I don’t think they are invalidated because of their attitude.

There are always ways to prove things, but just because they are not proven doesn’t mean there isn’t a logic behind it.

Ask Leo Mazzone or Dave Duncan for empirical evidence of his mechanical teachings, and he can’t give it to you. Though i’d say a lot of pitchers would beg to differ in their opinions.

by Chad Moriyama on Jul 20, 2009 9:39 PM PDT up reply actions

I don't know how much I'd trust Mazzone

but I’d listen to anything Dave Duncan wanted to tell me.

I still don’t buy into anything DLM has to say.

[DELETED ZOMG NO POLITICS]

by bluemax on Jul 20, 2009 9:41 PM PDT up reply actions

Not in mechanics maybe

but the way he’s turned around the careers of guys like Ryan Franklin and Joel Pineiro is pretty impressive.

Pineiro has completely changed the type of pitcher he is this season.

by bluemax on Jul 20, 2009 9:46 PM PDT up reply actions

Point is...

…people on that site and others like to bag on the lack of evidence and supposed ignorance, yet they are themselves being ignorant by not taking everything into consideration.

I assume they don’t believe in scouting either, since you can’t prove that certain players have upside or potential. But wait, they do believe in scouting, which makes it a philosophical divide, doesn’t it?

Seems like a bunch of whining because somebody caught feelings over a pitcher’s mechanics. O’Leary says Broxton has problems. Carroll says Billingsley has problems. I don’t buy either one, but it’s something to consider.

by Chad Moriyama on Jul 20, 2009 9:49 PM PDT up reply actions

I don't know too many stats nerds

who believe that scouting is entirely without merit.

[DELETED ZOMG NO POLITICS]

by bluemax on Jul 20, 2009 9:51 PM PDT up reply actions

I am a stat nerd

who loves scouting, and mechanics, because I like knowledge, not being a hard headed ass because I caught feelings over some pitcher I don’t know and somebody’s opinion.

by Chad Moriyama on Jul 20, 2009 9:51 PM PDT up reply actions

I didn't catch feelings

read the article I linked below.

[DELETED ZOMG NO POLITICS]

by bluemax on Jul 20, 2009 9:52 PM PDT up reply actions

The same thing I said at the start

that biomechanics is not a simple science and a bunch of amateurs on a blog can’t predict pitching injuries based on inverted Ws no matter how hard they wish.

[DELETED ZOMG NO POLITICS]

by bluemax on Jul 20, 2009 9:55 PM PDT up reply actions

Where did I say it was a simple science?

I read about mechanics the same way I read about scouting, or talk to scouts or coaches, or do it myself.

I take everything with a “boulder of salt” that’s not proven, but it doesn’t invalidate anything at all.

Some mechanics are better than others, there’s no one good way sure. Sorry, I can’t prove it to you with a spreadsheet, but yes, hitters do I have a common vein that seems to lead to more bat speed, and pitchers have the same things. Everybody might be different and nobody can predict injuries because of other factors but it doesn’t make providing information a mistake.

To say so like some people over there and other critics are is equally ignorant, IMO.

by Chad Moriyama on Jul 20, 2009 10:01 PM PDT up reply actions

Steven Ellis has a pretty good beginners site.

Chris O’Leary/RPM Pitching/Eric Cressey/Driveline Mechanics are also good reads.

I guess Marshall would be more advanced.

by Chad Moriyama on Jul 20, 2009 9:51 PM PDT up reply actions

Thanks.

Read some Marshall stuff a few years ago, bored me to tears.

by prosellis on Jul 20, 2009 9:52 PM PDT up reply actions

I did but...

…it doesn’t explain his 4 elbow surgeries. Mechanics aren’t that bad, there are genetic components and workload ones as well.

by Chad Moriyama on Jul 20, 2009 9:26 PM PDT up reply actions

They certainly seemed to hate his timing and rotation.

But the part that bugged me, because it seemed like it was sensible, was “If you keep doing the same thing expecting different results, you’re cazy.”

by prosellis on Jul 20, 2009 9:28 PM PDT up reply actions

It's not easy to change older players...

…there’s a chance he might get hurt again that way, but it might be the only way he can be a major league pitcher. There are lots of factors in everything.

There’s nothing yet that guarantees injury or that you are safe. I absolutely buy that doing certain things puts more stress on the body which is never good for anybody.

Despite lack of ABSOLUTE empirical evidence and a lack of a mechanical efficiency version of wOBA.

by Chad Moriyama on Jul 20, 2009 9:36 PM PDT up reply actions

I know less than nothing about mechanics,

but seeing that guy go down over and over again is really horrible.

by prosellis on Jul 20, 2009 9:39 PM PDT up reply actions

by Eric Stephen on Jul 20, 2009 9:33 PM PDT reply actions

Russ should bat 2nd all the time.

1) Cameron Richardson
2) Patridge
3) Padma

Sorry

I don’t know Richardson…haven’t seen it.

Padma is #1, but Adrina was shockingly good.

I must be getting old

I don’t know who Padma is.

After the 45-ish minute first inning, we’re looking at “only” 2 hours or so for the next 6. Not too bad I guess.

by Eric Stephen on Jul 20, 2009 9:42 PM PDT reply actions

Why is Russ still trying to steal?

Is this The Jason Schmidt Game or the Botched Hit & Run Game?

by Eric Stephen on Jul 20, 2009 9:42 PM PDT reply actions

E: next time you’re in the clubhouse can you let Torre know that the Reds have a catcher w/a gun? Yes, botched hit and run (#2), but c’mon…

by KellyStephen on Jul 20, 2009 9:44 PM PDT up reply actions

Maybe they can just call the “hit” play.

(I believe that is when Bowa touches his right ear twice in succession)

As long as your not “always looking” like Plaschke does….

Dear Joe Torre

You have a four-run lead. You don’t need to “force the action”.

Thank you,
El Lay Dave

In what will likely resemble a Chicago election, if the score stays the same, its a shoe-in that Jason Schmidt will be named Player of the Game by Prime Ticket.

Actually, I forgot if they even do that (I think they do)

Can you stop w/the jinx? Remember the Billingsley Padre game a few weeks ago?

no

don’t recall that game…

by bucknellbruin on Jul 20, 2009 9:52 PM PDT up reply actions

I fully endorse the Prime Ticket graphic “Lightning has never struck a Dodger player on the field before” right now too.

by Eric Stephen on Jul 20, 2009 9:57 PM PDT up reply actions

i think 1 will be

can’t assume the DP on either, so with 2 gb outs one run still scores

by bucknellbruin on Jul 20, 2009 9:58 PM PDT up reply actions

Actually, I believe that is correct.

by Eric Stephen on Jul 20, 2009 9:59 PM PDT up reply actions

They both are…the guy who reached on the error was erased on the DP.

by Eric Stephen on Jul 20, 2009 9:58 PM PDT up reply actions

but

if that guy is out at 1st, then runners are on 2nd and 3rd w/ 1 out. next hitter grounds out, 1 run scores. next guy Ks. inning over, 1 run in

He did have a week off, just seems a bit much for a guy nursing a toe injury. He can take a couple of games off the next two though :)

In the days of yore

The fielder got that error only if the batter actually reached base. If the batter made out, no error. They stopped doing that several years ago. Now it’s an error no matter what.

Eric knows this already

19 Dodger pitchers have at least 1 win (anyone who has pitched at least 5 total innings this year) and every Dodger starter (9) has won at least 1 start.

by bhsportsguy on Jul 20, 2009 10:36 PM PDT reply actions

I thought it was only 18 pitchers (which is a record). Only Vargas and Schlichting are without a win.
