Jason Schmidt: Volume II, Issue II
Today there are a number of possibilities for the Dodgers. Will Jason Schmidt be able to get through five innings, as he did Monday night, or will his 87 mph fastball and 83 mph change up provide the impetus for a Marlin offensive attack? I don't think anybody knows just what to expect today.
The Dodger offense will face Chris Volstad, who returns to the site of his first major league start, a 3-1 win last July. Volstad gives up the long ball, having surrendered 20 home runs so far this season. His rate of 1.5 homer per nine innings is 6th worst in the National League. With today's daytime start coupled with the heat, there could be a lot of souvenirs in the bleachers today.
Andre Ethier has reached base in his last eight plate appearances, and has a six-game hitting streak during which he's hitting .591/.654/1.091.
Right now (9:25am), Juan Pierre is the only player on the field, running and stretching in the outfield while wearing his "Beast Mode" t-shirt. Does that mean he's in today's lineup? I'm not sure, but I should find out in about a half hour or so.
Get your guesses in for today's "Clogging The Bases" here.

I didn’t hear that (I listened to all the postgame audio), but I wouldn’t be surprised. Blake is sitting for sure, and I expect Ausmus to be in there too. I should have the lineup in 10 minutes or so.

We should trade for Brian Bannister.
Dude’s awesome, and while he’ll never have the best stuff, he’d at least thinking on how to improve himself.
He’d be a great interview, plus I might get to meet Joe Posnanski! :)

Yeah, I just posted his lastest interview as a fanshot.
He goes into detail on using a cutter almost exclusively instead of a regular fastball, and it makes me wonder if Billingsley was thinking among similar lines.
No lineups yet…I came back upstairs for a few minutes. Players are just arriving. They are all dressed nicely…the road trip travel outfits if you will.
I’m not sure if this means anything, but Blake DeWitt was also dressed in a nice dress shirt and slacks, and had a large bag packed. It looks like he is going on the road trip, but that’s just pure speculation on my part.
DeWitt destination
Road trip for sure, but to Missouri or New Mexico? I’ll guess the latter, with Kuo returning soon. What’s Stults’ status (I expect we’ll hear after Schmidt’s progress today). Ane wasn’t Mientkiewicz expecting a rehab stint in the minors this coming week? Question, questions.
Will do…I expect him to be here, although he wasn’t in the locker room a few minutes ago.

I bet he makes the trip, even if he’s not activated just yet.

I hope this continues...
from the Dodger notes:
Jason Schmidt is a perfect 8-0 in 15 career starts against the Marlins. He is the only pitcher in the Majors since the start of the 1995 season, when he broke into the league, who is unbeaten in at least 15 starts against any one team. He is one of 15 Major League pitchers who is unbeaten in at least 10 starts against any one team in the same time period
Reading Bill Plaschke article.
He seems like the kinda guy who would trade 24 age version of Sandy Koufax for the 32 year old version of Sandy Koufax.
Marlins lineup
per Clark Spencer (I didn’t go into the Marlins’ clubhouse):
coghlan, lf
bonifacio, 3b
ramirez, ss
cantu, 1b
hermida, rf
uggla, 2b
ross, cf
baker, c
volstad, p
Still no lineup yet. Kuo is here; no word yet on his roster status.

Bronson Arroyo. Asshole.
Ramirez news, nothing new
The Boston Red Sox didn’t much care for Manny Ramirez by the time they traded him to the Dodgers last summer. The Red Sox have let us know this over and over, all too often anonymously.
At least Reds pitcher Bronson Arroyo didn’t hide his name, after Ramirez hit his pinch-hit grand slam Wednesday, on a night he did not start because of a bruised hand.
“I know Manny,” said Arroyo, a former teammate in Boston. “He’ll take a day off if he gets hit like that, even if his hand is perfect.”

Ned Colletti and scout Vance Lovelace a
just met with Torre. Looked routine though.

Erik Bedard on the DL again.
That kills any chance of him being a type-A or maybe even a type-B FA. Or trading him for any value at all.
Pierre for Rhoades
thats a rumor from the Cincinnati Inquirer and rotoworld.. . .
my question is why the hell would Cinncinnati do this. . . but what do you guys think?
by SeanMillerSavior on Jul 26, 2009 11:14 AM PDT reply actions
You hear all sorts of rumors as the trade deadline approaches. Here’s one I heard today: Arthur Rhodes to the Dodgers for Juan Pierre.
I don’t see it happening. Pierre makes $10 million next year and $8.5 million in 2011. His career on-base is .348. He’s a slight upgrade over Willy Taveras. But I’d think the Reds would be looking for outfielders with more pop than Pierre.
