Wade, Mientkiewicz Set For Rehab Games in Albuquerque
Joe Torre said Sunday that injured reliever Cory Wade will pitch today in Albuquerque on a rehab assignment. Wade has been on the disabled list since July 16 with a right shoulder strain, and is eligible to be activated Friday.
Now comes word this morning that utility man Doug Mientkiewicz, out since April 17 with a dislocated right shoulder, will also play rehab games in New Mexico, starting Tuesday. From Mientkiewicz's Twitter page:
Can't sleep! Driving to NM today. Playing Tom. Can't wait to get back on the field again
Albuquerque is hosting the Iowa Cubs in a day game today. You can listen to the 11:05am start here.
Tuesday's Isotopes game is against the Oklahoma City RedHawks, and starts at 6:05pm.

This is for Phil
Bill Simmons brings this nugget about new Laker Ron Artest, right before Game 7 against the Lakers this spring:
Here’s what happened: Artest missed the first two team buses (the ones for players, coaches and team personnel) from Houston’s hotel to the Staples Center and barely made the third and final bus, which was reserved for business staff, sponsors and friends of the team. These stunned people watched Artest sprint to the bus right before it left, jump on and take one of the remaining seats … yes, wearing only his underwear. Owner Leslie Alexander happened to be sitting on the bus and witnessed the whole thing. And you wonder why the Houston Rockets didn’t make any effort whatsoever to bring back Artest.
Umm, wow!
I wish they had a youtube video of the sprint to the bus
What a clown, hope you enjoy rooting for him instead of Ariza/Odom

Friday, July 31
Interesting day. At 1 p.m., we find out the future direction of this franchise.
At 4:30, unless things change, it’s the biggest pitching mis-match ever: Tommy Hanson vs. Jason Schmidt.
eric stultz
he pitches today for alberqueurque. hopefully it will be stultz vs hanson
They're not going to pitch Stults on Friday then
3 days’ rest doesn’t work
I’ll take Weaver, Vargas or McDonald at this point.
The way everyone is setup right now, if Schmidt doesn’t go Friday, you might get all of those guys Friday. :)

and I didn’t even notice the 3-days rest factor for Stults. Good catch.

I'm down with that
Stults’ last 3 starts: 6 IP in each start, 18 IP, 17 hits, 7 runs, 7 walks, 17 strikeouts, 1 HR
From the game notes:
The southpaw has also proven to be a rotation work-horse, having fi red more than 90 pitches in each of his last three starts, including a season-high 117 pitches in his last start.
Sounds like his arm is ready and lengthened enough to start again.

so today if he throws 60 or so pitches
then we will know if he will start on 3 days rest or if we are getting shmidt again
If Stults starts today at all, he won’t start Friday for the Dodgers. They won’t bring him up to pitch on 3-days rest.
That will essentially narrow it down to Schmidt, or Weaver for Friday.

Upon further review, I think Stults could pitch a few innings today and still pitch Friday. Maybe only two innings, but not 60 pitches, though.

Toronto Sun
DODGERS 10-1
Were insulted by the Jays asking for either three majors-leaguers (CF Matt Kemp and LHP Clayton Kershaw) or six prospects.
Ricciardi is a fool.

I can’t wait for Ricciardi to get stuck holding the bag on this one.
I’m still shocked he didn’t basically give Halladay and Wells to the Yankees for a Low A player. The future of the Blue Jays is tied up in the absurd salary of Vernon Wells, they need to get that right. Halladay’s salary looks like peanuts in comparison.

Driving to New Mexico?
It seems odd that Mientkiewicz would spend the whole day driving to Albuquerque, which can be mentally tiring and doesn’t give him time to do much baseball practice on the day. Surely the team would offer him a plane ticket, but presumably payers often prefer to drive so they can have a car while they’re there. Even if the team doesn’t offer car rentals, you’d think they could afford the $35/day rate themselves for the week or so of rehab.
Yeah, it seems like a lot of driving…470 miles from Glendale to ABQ. I wonder if Eye Chart just likes driving.

And recall?
And what if he’s recalled at short notice to the bigs? Then he’d have to take a plane and leave his car behind at ABQ, find someone else to drive it back, fly them one-way, etc. etc. What a hassle. Or even if given a day or two’s notice (which honestly doesn’t seem to happen often), he’d then be spending a whole day driving just before his first day back on the big team.
Maybe he’s got someone to go with him, who can do whatever part of this is necessary.
Hard to believe but this team can really use EyeChart.
DeWitt needs to be playing everyday before the minor league season is over.

With EyeChart, Torre can use him with Mark Loretta as L/R pinch-hitters. Maybe they can try to get Loretta more PA against LHP, and let Minky take a good chuck of the RHP reps.
