Dodgers Tab Billingsley To Stop The Bleeding

The Dodgers have now lost two straight games 11 times this season.  In each of the previous ten occurrences, the Dodgers responded with a win, outscoring their opponents 63 to 16.  In those ten games, the starting pitchers have pitched 64.1 innings, allowing 41 hits and 15 walks, while striking out 56 batters, for an ERA of 1.40.

The role of losing streak stopper falls on Chad Billingsley today, who struggled recently but rebounded nicely by giving up two runs over six innings last Wednesday in the Manny Bobbleslam game.

Billingsley will square off against Adam Wainwright, who has put together a fine season so far.  Even though Wainwright's ERA is about three-quarters of a run lower than Billingsley, the two pitchers have been more similar than you might think:

Pitcher IP W-L ERA ERA+ FIP x-FIP
Wainwright      143.1 11-6 2.95 141 3.61 3.71
Billingsley 133.0 10-5 3.72 112 3.50 3.91

Andre Ethier extended has an eight-game hitting streak, and is hitting .533/.600/.900 during the streak.

The Cardinals, fighting with the Cubs for first place in the NL Central, are just a half-game back entering tonight's game.  As Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch noted:

This is a remarkable stat from the Elias Sports Bureau: On Sunday the Cardinals loss to the Phillies dropped them out of first place and pushed the Cubs into the NL Central lead. Quote from Elias: "It was the first time since August 11, 1936 that the Cubs displaced the Cardinals as the first-place team in their league or division race this late in a season." Did a little digging beyond the Elias note, and if you think of the year you’ll quickly think about what else was going on at that time. For context, that is the day this happened:

On August 11, 1936, in Berlin, U.S. track icon Jesse Owens won the gold medal in the long jump, defeating Germany’s Lutz Long.

only 2 lefties for bills to face

it seems like he struggles against lineups which include a lot of lefties so i think he will be fine today

by matthewmafa on Jul 28, 2009 2:12 PM PDT up reply actions

Billingsley actually faced more lefties this year.

Vs. left handed hitters: .268/.337/.389 in 307 PA and 74K, 27 walks, 5 homers given up

vs. right handed hitters: .212/.311/.332 in 245 PA and 52K, 29 walks, 5 homers given up

The big money league?

by Eric Stephen on Jul 28, 2009 2:30 PM PDT up reply actions

Monopoly money of course.

by Eric Stephen on Jul 28, 2009 2:31 PM PDT up reply actions

Yup, the big money league

Not that anyone asked but I’m a head by 35 points which is the largest lead ever at this point in the year. My key deal this year was the day after Manny was suspended trading Hamilton for Carpenter and Manny. Hamilton got hurt a few days later and Carpenter has been awesome. However I’ve lost Beltran for what looks like the year so my question for the week (trading deadline 7/31) do I trade a $1 Zobrist ($2 in 2010, $3 in 2011) for a super stud or do I hope to maintain my lead and keep Zobrist for another run next year.
The teams chasing me have done all the crazy trades a keeper league has and are now loaded so I have to do some calculating to see if I’m at risk.

Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen

by Phil Gurnee on Jul 28, 2009 2:56 PM PDT up reply actions

I would keep Zobrist. Even if he’s ordinary he’s cheap enough to still be very valuable in 2010-11.

Please go post this on the A’s Nation. :)

RE: Kershaw

Phil, that’s why I was also careful to call Bills the best RHP drafted since Orel. :)

I also went with “drafted” to avoid the pesky Pedro Martinez problem.

Padres are predictably struggling, but wow. From Gaslamp Ball:

Worst month in Padres history was August 1969, their first year (5-22). They are currently 4-20 this month. Ouch.

So last night my wife taped this early 1960’s Hollywood show because she loves the old movies and actors. This guy was showing his home movies of celebrities from 1919 – 1960 which might sound boring but he had some awesome clips of celebrity baseball games being played at old Wrigly field in the 30’s. We are talking big stars playing in these games. Anyway it was cool, hopefully I’ll find the time to snag a minute or two of the clips and show them.

Bowden can't be traded

just saw on ESPN that Peter Gammons said he worked a no-trade clause into his minor league deal. He was going to go to college, but decided to sign because he wanted to play for the red sox. So he can’t be included in any deal

by bucknellbruin on Jul 28, 2009 3:48 PM PDT up reply actions

That’s the first I’ve ever heard of a no-trade clause for a minor leaguer. Weird.

Although in a few years, Vernon Wells might have that distinction too :)

Dodgers might see Wellmeyer this series after all.
ST. LOUIS — The St. Louis Cardinals are sending struggling Todd Wellemeyer to the bullpen. It did not come as a surprise to the right-hander, 7-9 with a 5.79 ERA.

“I’ll be in the bullpen for who knows how long and try to make the best of it,” Wellemeyer said. "We had to switch it up and see how it goes.

“I’m going to make it a good thing for me, that’s all there is to it.”

This is after Pujols made a public campaign to sign Manny in the off season.

Not that one follows the other, but their attitude would be a lot different if Manny was a Cardinal.

Heck, I don’t see them booing Ryan Franklin.

Anybody stream the game?

My favorite stream site has been seriously lacking in Dodger streams as of late, so I was wondering: Who here streams the game and where might I catch a stream?

by Talka1ot on Jul 28, 2009 4:50 PM PDT reply actions

I would, but...

I honestly don’t want to pay 100+ dollars a season when I’ve found ways to get the game for free.
At worst, I settle for MLB Gameday, but if anybody else knows a place relaying streams or is currently streaming the game, I would love a link.

Myp2p has just been killing me lately… they’re almost as bad as ESPN. Always the Red Sox, Yankees and the Phillies…
