The MLB Network coverage began with a montage of studio highlights, and one made me laugh. Sean Casey was talking about the Lugo trade, and he said “the Red Sox are happy to move his salary; he’s making $9 million next year.” Then, Casey was interrupted, and someone said the Red Sox are paying the whole salary, so Casey deadpanned, “the Red Sox are not moving his salary” as if nothing happened.

It was pretty funny. I like Sean Casey.

I'm betting today is a quiet deadline day

Lee and Sherril are already off the board. For some reason JP is content to just keep Halladay. Maybe Washburn gets traded to the Yankees but that’s not a terribly earth shattering deal (by the way, all the people pointing to Washburn’s ERA will see it skyrocket as he gets to the Bronx.)

But if the Dodgers do complete the eath shattering deal, I might as well just go home for the day—- won’t be getting anything accomplished at work.

by Michael White on Jul 31, 2009 8:15 AM PDT reply actions

Yeah, I’m prepared for anything, but you might be right.

I can see the Dodgers getting Rhodes or something, but at this point I’m not sure if they need to get yet another reliever (I know that could also have been said with Sherrill).

Eric has prewritten trade deadline stories for

Roy Halladay
Washburn
Scott Rolen
The whole Pirate roster

My pre-written Washburn story consists of one word.

It rhymes with Duck.

You were gone for lunch

but did you see the comments when our True Blue faithful thought the trade was Elbert and not Johnson?

by meercatjohn on Jul 31, 2009 8:27 AM PDT up reply actions

Yes, in fact I saw a few comments from my phone, and commented while I was in the car that I didn’t like the deal. By the time the comment went through, it was already old news :)

by Eric Stephen on Jul 31, 2009 8:28 AM PDT up reply actions

Did you take a look at the Halladay story, BTW? It’s a freaking novel!

by Eric Stephen on Jul 31, 2009 8:47 AM PDT up reply actions

Jordan Bastain, the Blue Jays MLB.com writer, thinks the Rangers are the closest to a Halladay deal, but that they won’t include Derek Holland so they’re probably out.

It will probably have to come down to Colletti or JP blinking in 4 hours

by Eric Stephen on Jul 31, 2009 8:20 AM PDT reply actions

Tick tock

please time, speed up and prevent a Colletti disaster.

9:19am: Juan C. Rodriguez of the South Florida Sun-Sentinel says the Padres wanted Cameron Maybin and Miller for Bell. The Fish have seen other trade ideas dry up as well, leading Rodriguez to suggest “it might be Nick Johnson or bust for the Marlins.” SI’s Jon Heyman agrees.

We get Sherrill who is close to Bell in performance for two AA pitchers and the Padres are asking for the Marlins best position prospect and Miller, basically the package that the got from the Tigers for Miggy. What a great trade by the Tigers. We could have beat that easily.

by meercatjohn on Jul 31, 2009 8:26 AM PDT reply actions

Don't write him off yet

he’s still showing signs of being productive. Nothing like he was expected to be, but I’d be surprised if he doesn’t carve out a decent career. Have you noticed the trouble the big time College LH starters are having adjusting to the major leagues? Price has been a huge disappointment this year.

by meercatjohn on Jul 31, 2009 8:28 AM PDT up reply actions

The problem is he is out of options next year…he just needs time in the minors to find it.

by Eric Stephen on Jul 31, 2009 8:30 AM PDT up reply actions

Price will be fine

He has incredible stuff. Miller has been overrated since he was drafted.

by silverwidow on Jul 31, 2009 8:30 AM PDT up reply actions

Two years ago we said Miller would be fine but his stuff has never bounced back to what it was at the

collegiate level.

I’m sure Price will be fine, I just find it interesting that these big time pitching prospects who went to finishing school are behind the eight ball compared to the high school pitchers like Keshaw and Porcello.

by meercatjohn on Jul 31, 2009 8:34 AM PDT up reply actions

In college they don't need to develop secondary pitches

In the minors, they start working on that at the age of 18.

That has certainly been Miller’s problem, the lack of secondary pitches.

by Michael White on Jul 31, 2009 8:35 AM PDT up reply actions

#Dodgers felt they had enough in prospects to get Halladay, but that it would have meant emptying system and said no.

by Bluetrek on Jul 31, 2009 8:26 AM PDT reply actions

The Tigers acquired pitcher Jarrod Washburn from the Tigers, according to Mike Salk of ESPN radio Seattle.

by Bluetrek on Jul 31, 2009 8:28 AM PDT reply actions

Mike Salk needs to double check which team actually sent Washburn to Detroit.

2009-10 LA Kings Hockey: Where Smyt Happens!!

by DodgerBlueBalls on Jul 31, 2009 8:34 AM PDT up reply actions

That is a team that can use Washburn

they need to make the playoffs, so every incremental gain works for them.

by meercatjohn on Jul 31, 2009 8:30 AM PDT reply actions

Agreed

they have Luke French as a starter (who has actually pitched well) and Galaragga (who has not.) Washburn improves their pitching staff.

by Michael White on Jul 31, 2009 8:34 AM PDT up reply actions

If the reports are true that we are getting one more reliever, what will the postseason staff look like?

Starters
Bills
Kershaw
Wolf
Kuroda

Relievers
Broxton
Sherrill
Troncoso
Kuo
Belisario
Mota
Reliever Acquired Today
Weaver? Wade? Elbert (maybe for the NLCS only against Phils)?

I’m assuming we go with a 12-man staff even with 4 starters because the lineup is pretty set. That allows a 5-man bench of Pierre, Loretta, Mientkiewicz, Castro, and Ausmus.

That’s a pretty sweet pen.

by Eric Stephen on Jul 31, 2009 8:34 AM PDT reply actions

McDonald made the postseason roster last year

Wouldn’t be surprised if he did it again this year.

by Michael White on Jul 31, 2009 8:34 AM PDT up reply actions

Don't see a spot at this point

but we can expect injuries to deplete the group by October

Plus once he’s traded it won’t really matter.

by meercatjohn on Jul 31, 2009 8:36 AM PDT up reply actions

I'm still holding out hope that we get Halladay without having to give up McDonald

I know I’m in the minority here, but I still view McDonald higher than Elbert and am not particularly concerned with JMac’s struggles this year.

by Michael White on Jul 31, 2009 8:39 AM PDT up reply actions

I don't se JMac ever being much of a starter

Guys who cry after sucking on the mound, how many of those guys ever make it? Then again how many of them cry. He’s 25 not 18. So much of this game is confidence and mental.

by meercatjohn on Jul 31, 2009 8:42 AM PDT up reply actions

You are probably right, but in my mind I already had him traded for Halladay so I forgot. :)

by Eric Stephen on Jul 31, 2009 8:37 AM PDT up reply actions

Also, I wouldn’t be surprised to see Wolf & Kuroda switched, if only to breakup the lefty/righty order.

I like Tom Verducci here…after Amsinger (whose fake voice I hate) looked at all the Pirates traded away the past few years and said “that’s a competitive team, right?”, Verducci chimed in with “they couldn’t get to 81 wins with these guys…it’s not like they’re breaking up the 1927 Yankees.”

Awesome.

The July Dodger magazine (with Vin on the cover) has an article on the bench guys (Castro, Loretta, Ausmus) called “The Bomb Squad.” I kind of like that nickname, even if they don’t really have power. Its not quite “The Stuntmen,” but it works.

I had no idea Lou Brock’s 3000th hit was a line drive that bounced off the pitcher, and into foul territory by 3B. Awesome.

If Hudson starts tonight, he will reach 450 PA (sitting on 448) and pick up another $250,000 bonus. That will but him at $2.8 million of $4.62 million in PA incentives earned so far.

Interesting...
The Mariners rejected offers from six different teams for young pitcher Felix Hernandez, according to ESPN’s Jayson Stark and Peter Gammons. GM Jack Zduriencik admitted he listened, but didn’t find anything even worth discussing

Rosenthal:

The Dodgers no longer are talking to the Blue Jays about ace right-hander Roy Halladay, and they’re also unlikely to get Jays right-handed reliever Jason Frasor, according to a major-league source.

The Jays are listening on all fronts until the 4 p.m. non-waiver deadline. The Dodgers, looking for bullpen help even after adding left-hander George Sherrill on Thursday, have inquired on Frasor.

The source, however, indicated that the teams did not have a match.

I guess his reasoning behind this is

that Casey Blake is old and Bell was the best 3rd base prospect in the system. Oh, and the Dodgers already had a good bullpen.

Ya, i get that.

From BP:

regarding our pursuit of another relief pitcher.

“What they really need right now is an inning-eater for the back of the rotation, because their in-house fifth-starter options (Jason Schmidt, Jeff Weaver, James McDonald and Eric Stults) are shaky, averaging a bullpen-taxing 4.5 innings per start and combining for just one quality start out of 20. It would allow the team to conserve Clayton Kershaw’s bullets, because the 21-year-old phenom will face an innings limit that’s probably not much more lenient than last year’s cap of 170; he was at 120.2 through Wednesday’s start.” – Jay Jaffe
