Did We Mention There Was A Game Tonight?

The trade deadline came and went at 1pm today, and other than the Earth-shattering Claudio Vargas for Vinny Rottino swap, the Dodgers stood pat.  New acquisition George Sherrill has joined the team in Atlanta and is active for tonight's game with the Braves.

Jason Schmidt improbably makes his third start for the Dodgers since being activated from the two-year disabled list.  He has allowed ten hits, eight runs, and four walks in his eight innings of work in his firs two outings.  I would expect a healthy dose of yesterday's call up, Scott Elbert, tonight.

Just as Schmidt was once a young Braves' pitcher, tonight's starter for Atlanta is 22-year old Tommy Hanson, who is 5-0 with a 2.95 ERA in his first 9 major league starts.  His FIP, however, is 4.49, and his x-FIP is 5.23.

Per the Dodger game notes, "Sherrill was born in Memphis and becomes just the fifth Tennessee-born pitcher in Los Angeles Dodger history, joining Claude Osteen (339 games), pitching coach Rick Honeycutt (128), Greg McMichael (12), and Jim Hickman (1)."

The Braves reacquired Adam LaRoche from the Red Sox for Casey Kotchman, in an exchange of first basemen.  Per Mark Bowman of MLB.com, with LaRoche en route to Atlanta, Barbaro Canizares has been promoted from AAA Gwinnett, and will start at first base for the Braves tonight.

Get your guesses in for tonight's finale of "Clogging The Bases" here.

This one can't go well

Can we have a special “Pitches before Schmidt is yanked” guessing game?

i second this suggestion

hahaha.

I might be the only one to play but I optimistically say 71 pitches

Jason Schmidt's line tonight

3 innings, 4 ERs, 1 K, 3 walks

by Tripon on Jul 31, 2009 2:12 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

I think your 3.1 is correct...

But I’m thinking 3 runs in that span, 3 walks and 2K’s.
Then, bring on Elbert.

by Talka1ot on Jul 31, 2009 2:15 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think he has to break the 9ERA point to get pulled

Unless he loads the bases in the third and elbert gets out of the jam

by Jacob Burch on Jul 31, 2009 2:16 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

That's where I'm thinking his final runs come from...

Inherited baserunners score off Elbert, otherwise, they wouldn’t pull him mid-inning unless he got himself into deep trouble.

by Talka1ot on Jul 31, 2009 2:17 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

But he’s a gamer. And a baseball player. Good trade.

4:12pm: Peavy’s agent, Barry Axelrod, told Tom Krasovic that his client accepted the deal because there was no guarantee that the Cubs and Dodgers, Peavy’s preferred teams, would have made a move for the righty in the offseason. Axelrod knows Peavy’s contract no longer looks like a bargain, so he’s surprised the White Sox made the deal.

Guess Jason Schmidt's swinging strike total

I’m going with 3.

I think he only had 4 all of last game! This would be like guessing number of goals in a soccer game :)

by Eric Stephen on Jul 31, 2009 2:19 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I'm pretty sure he's been averaging like

3 or 4 a start.

StatCorner says only 4.9% of his pitches have been swinging strikes so far. That’s horrible.

If Schmidt is bluntly told that he either accepts an “injury” and is moved to the DL, or the Dodgers just DFA him, I wonder which Schmidt would choose.

by Michael White on Jul 31, 2009 2:23 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Probably DFA…he’ll work out all winter and try to catch on as an NRI in the spring. Then he’ll probably retire.

My wife asked me the other day during Schmidt's first game

“Did this guy used to be good?” Of course I responded that he was VERY good.

Oh well, I do appreciate that he worked hard and tried to contribute to the team instead of just cashing paychecks. He had a nice career, nothing to be ashamed of.

Do you think we can get any value if Schmidt passes through waivers and then we end up tading him to the Glue Faftory?

Braves scouting report for you guys

Lineup:

McLouth – CF: Slumping a bit since the ASG, but broke out of it a little against Milwaukee and Florida.
Prado – 2B: Shin contusion from a ball in BP yesterday, day-to-day; team MVP since June 1st.
Chipper – 3B: His average is down a bit, but he’s been hitting more HRs.
McCann – C: Was slumping a bit, but crushed the ball 4 times yesterday in Florida. Decent arm behind the plate.
Anderson – LF: Hottest hitter in baseball since the ASG; Horrible defensively in LF.
Escobar – SS: HBP yestday in the 2nd inning and is day-to-day; hottest hitter on the team next to Anderson; great defense.
Canizares – 1B: Called up from AAA to fill in until LaRoche gets here. Decent job earlier in the year for 10 games or so; HUGE guy 6’5 250
Church/Diaz – RF: In a platoon; Church is a little banged up and plays better defense; Diaz kills LHP

Pitching:
Hanson: 5-1 w/ an ERA around 3. He’s the pride and joy of Braves fans. Had a 26 1/3 scoreless innings streak earlier in the year against the Orioles, Reds, Yankees, Red Sox and Natinals. His K/BB numbers aren’t that great and he doesn’t always have full comand of his pitches. Teams who attack early in the count tend to have a little more success against him.

FB: 92-96mph; hits the corners pretty well.
Slider: 83-87mph; really cuts in on lefties; tries the backdoor on occasion
Changeup: 78-82mph; doesn’t throw it all that much and gets elevated on occasion.
Curveball: 80-83mph; 12-to-6 movement

Poised on the mound, but does fatigue a bit if its especially warm. Usually throws around 100 pitches. Pretty even GB/FB ratio.

Hope this helps.

Our lineup is BAD tonight. just found it on foxsports

McLouth CF
Johnson 2B
Chipper 3B
McCann C
Anderson LF
Canizares 1B
Diaz RF
Hernandez SS
Hanson P

Ok, so you have a report on all the guys except Kelly Johnson and Diory Hernandez.

Johnson: Was horrible 1st half of the season and was replaced by Prado. Had an “injury” and went down to AAA for 3 weeks. Has hit well since coming back up, but went 0-3 last night. Below average defense as well.

Hernandez: CANT HIT A BASEBALL. Not bad on defense, but if Schmidt gives up a hit to this guy, ill be amazed. Decent speed as well.

What Happened to the Braves vs Dodgers Rivaly?

I mean I know we went off and sucked for 20 years, but we are back now, come on, give us a break.

by Dodger Dude on Jul 31, 2009 3:46 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Why “give us a break?” There was no contentiousness there.

Also, there is no rivalry because we aren’t in the same division anymore, and haven’t met in the playoffs since 1996.

by Eric Stephen on Jul 31, 2009 3:50 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

This is what I expect
Six runs, Five hits, 53 pitches, 1 2/3 innings

but because we all think he is going to stink this is what he will do
2 runs, five hits, 93 pitches, 6 1/3 innings

I can sit on fence with the best of them.

Sorry, I had to get that last one in there. (And yes, I know that no one was willing to trade Kershaw…now that he’s had a great 2 months.)

Anyway, we can get back to business. Dodgers are even better now than they were before this week. Those that didn’t give up on Bills through this will be proud someday, perhaps soon. The rest will probably forget that they ever did…
