Leach vs. RHB/LHB

Thanks to minorleaguesplits.com, we can see Leach’s career minor league splits:

vs. LHB: 285 batters faced, 3.10 FIP, .237 avg, 12 doubles, 2 HR, 3.23 bb/9, 9.43 k/9
vs RHB: 753 batters faced, 3.88 FIP, .225 avg, 26 doubles, 7 HR, 5.38 bb/9, 9.39 k/9

Looks like he is still OK against RHB, but man that’s a ton of walks.

by Eric Stephen on Jul 7, 2009 3:57 PM PDT reply actions

That is a ton

Not sure why that would be. Perhaps since he has been less succesful against RHB it causes his to nibble the strike zone more? In any event, walks were always the concern with Leach, and he’s been, “so far so good” in that department.

by Michael White on Jul 7, 2009 3:59 PM PDT up reply actions

Maybe its a site thing. Lefties might have a harder time picking up the ball out of his hand than righties.

We should have Ausmus work with him like he did with Mota. :)

by Eric Stephen on Jul 7, 2009 4:00 PM PDT up reply actions

Me too. It wouldn’t hurt to try. Just let him pitch whole innings in which a prominent LHB might bat.

by Eric Stephen on Jul 7, 2009 4:05 PM PDT up reply actions

Also, I think Leach was starting in 2005, and 2006.

Which might skew the numbers a bit. You’d obviously are going to see a lot more right handers over left handers while being a starting pitcher.

by Tripon on Jul 7, 2009 4:09 PM PDT up reply actions

Now that you mention it, that is kind of weird. Maybe we can have one of those weird situations where Vin is sitting in the stands like at Fenway Park a few years back.

Never like to hear elbow or shoulder.

i mean...

we kinda saw this coming didn’t we? troncoso is 1st in IP for NL relievers, belisario is a close 2nd. hey joe, let’s use some different bullpen arms. please?

by whorge on Jul 7, 2009 4:08 PM PDT up reply actions

Just because they were first and second in innings doesn’t mean they were overworked. Jon Weisman over at Dodger Thoughts has gone over this a ton recently.

by Eric Stephen on Jul 7, 2009 4:10 PM PDT up reply actions

True

but in the roto world they have worried about their arms for weeks and with Beli going on the DL, I’m not sure using Jon as the defense is the right call. Jon’s analysis totally ignored what they had done in previous seasons. I didn’t agree with Jon at the time and I still don’t.

by meercatjohn on Jul 7, 2009 4:14 PM PDT up reply actions

Right

but ignoring that for a moment, isn’t it possible if the pitchers are pitch-efficient, and you give them extra rest after long outings, etc, that they could accumulate innings faster than others?

I liken it to using a strict 5-day rotation for the best starters, and end up with 36-37 starts, all with normal rest, and you have a pitcher with 30 extra innings with very limited extra strain.

by Eric Stephen on Jul 7, 2009 4:16 PM PDT up reply actions

I don't know if there is a good predictor on this yet

But we shall see another guy thrusted into the 7th inning role again.

by bhsportsguy on Jul 7, 2009 4:20 PM PDT up reply actions

just looking at trending isn't gonna cut it

I’ve read what Weisman wrote regarding overuse, but this is a guy who missed all of 2005/2006 and hasn’t pitched above AA before this season. I’d say his body is less ready for these kind of innings and every other day work than the metrics dictate.

by whorge on Jul 8, 2009 10:10 AM PDT up reply actions

Manager Joe Torre said Belisario told him he first felt stiffness warming up for that game, “but it didn’t bother him in the game. He didn’t say anything, and Sunday again it was tight, but didn’t bother him, and he got on the plane and it was tight. He came in today and I saw [trainer] Stan [Conte] working on him and he came in and shook my hand.”

Geez, thanks Torre.

by Eric Stephen on Jul 7, 2009 5:15 PM PDT up reply actions

That’s a little concerning, although I think if Belisario was hurting Torre wouldn’t have let him throw….it was probably something like “The arm’s a little stiff, but nothing I can’t pitch through” or something like that

But the throw beat Castillo to 3rd, and if the jeter thing from yesterday shown, that you’re going to be out on that play.

Much easier facing Wright with 1 on and 2 outs than 2 on and 1 out.

by Eric Stephen on Jul 7, 2009 5:18 PM PDT reply actions

So far from the Bison

we have seen the speed on the infield single
we have seen the arm on the assist at 3rd

by David Young on Jul 7, 2009 5:24 PM PDT up reply actions

Last year, Manny played a ton, and averaged 4.32 PA per game for the Dodgers.

If he were to average 4.32 PA over the Dodgers final 80 games (assuming he plays every day, highly unlikely), he would end with 474 PA.

There is a rule, however, that if you fall short of the minimum PA, you add hitless AB to your total to see if you still would win the batting title. So if Manny’s at .370 or something and 0 for 28 puts him at .345, and that’s still tops, he would win the batting title.

Dessens is a guy you root for. He needs a little over a month to reach 10 years of MLB service time, which ensures a full pension. He was called up on June 22.

Hat tip to Mr. Kershaw…great game, again. Due up 3rd in the 7th, so he’s done.

by Eric Stephen on Jul 7, 2009 6:19 PM PDT reply actions

Since the Colorado game (9 runs against Kershaw), Kershaw has given up 17 runs in 13 starts…2.11 ERA.

by Eric Stephen on Jul 7, 2009 6:20 PM PDT reply actions

When’s the last time Kershaw gave up a run?

by shoothoop on Jul 7, 2009 6:20 PM PDT reply actions

Yep

that was the middle start of 5…no runs in the other 4 starts

by Eric Stephen on Jul 7, 2009 6:22 PM PDT up reply actions

I think the most comforting stat from this start for Kershaw

is that he only had 2 walks. As long as he can keep his control sharp he’ll be awesome.

Citi Field is way to freaking big.

That Kemp flyball would be a double off the wall at DS.

James McDonald showing.

Jeff Weaver starting against the Brewers is pretty much set.

by Tripon on Jul 7, 2009 6:29 PM PDT reply actions

Torre already confirmed it

by Eric Stephen on Jul 7, 2009 6:30 PM PDT up reply actions

Did he?

Cool. At least we know Weaver can go 5.

From Gurnick:

Torre said Jeff Weaver, who won Sunday’s game with three hitless innings of relief, would make the spot start Saturday in Milwaukee

Mets haven’t scored a run since Saturday so we caught them at a good time!

by Alex L on Jul 7, 2009 6:42 PM PDT reply actions

Who is warming in the Dodgers pen, if anyone?

Is a seven-run lead enough to keep Torre from finishing this game with Troncoso and Broxton?

by David Young on Jul 7, 2009 6:42 PM PDT reply actions

I’m guessing nobody, but if McDonald gives up two hits Torre will pull him and bring in a reliever who didn’t warm up :)

I must admit I’m a fan of Giggling Steiner.

Not that I’m saying to vote for him or anything.

Sandoval is good, yes. But think of the children.

by sumo390 on Jul 7, 2009 6:51 PM PDT up reply actions

They both should go.

So should Reynolds.

That the NL team has 4 1st baseman is dumb.

by Alex L on Jul 7, 2009 6:53 PM PDT reply actions

by Alex L on Jul 7, 2009 6:54 PM PDT reply actions

Mets are starting Oliver Perez tomorrow.

Who the heck are going to be in the bullpen for them?

by Tripon on Jul 7, 2009 6:54 PM PDT reply actions

The Mets have too many cast off relievers.

Actually that probably applies to their whole team.

by Brendan Scolari on Jul 7, 2009 6:54 PM PDT reply actions

I think the Mets need a new stadium . . .

. . . you know, to turn that ship around next season.

by Dr. Geek on Jul 7, 2009 6:54 PM PDT reply actions

How many times has Sandoval gotten an RBI BB this season?

Exactly. Vote Bison!

Off topic, but

Has Bill Plaschke written a diatribe yet about St. Louis closer Ryan Franklin being honored as an All-Star after having served a 10-game suspension in 2005 for testing positive for steroids (the rules were different then)?

nice inning by Vargas

by Alex L on Jul 7, 2009 7:09 PM PDT reply actions

From the DT comments:

The Mets’ announcer, Howie Rose, already bored with this game, was disgusted when he saw Vargas warming up. He referred to Vargas as “all night Vargas” and said every pitch is “a 3 act play”.

assuming he finishes this one.

So he just might reach one of his incentive bonuses after all.

$75,000 for 40 GF
$75,000 for 50 GF
$75,000 for 60 GF
