Leach vs. RHB/LHB
Thanks to minorleaguesplits.com, we can see Leach’s career minor league splits:
vs. LHB: 285 batters faced, 3.10 FIP, .237 avg, 12 doubles, 2 HR, 3.23 bb/9, 9.43 k/9
vs RHB: 753 batters faced, 3.88 FIP, .225 avg, 26 doubles, 7 HR, 5.38 bb/9, 9.39 k/9
Looks like he is still OK against RHB, but man that’s a ton of walks.
That is a ton
Not sure why that would be. Perhaps since he has been less succesful against RHB it causes his to nibble the strike zone more? In any event, walks were always the concern with Leach, and he’s been, “so far so good” in that department.

Maybe its a site thing. Lefties might have a harder time picking up the ball out of his hand than righties.
We should have Ausmus work with him like he did with Mota. :)
Also, I'd say that a much larger sample size to work out for right handers vs. Left handers.
I’d still be alright having Leach pitch to right handers.
Me too. It wouldn’t hurt to try. Just let him pitch whole innings in which a prominent LHB might bat.
Also, I think Leach was starting in 2005, and 2006.
Which might skew the numbers a bit. You’d obviously are going to see a lot more right handers over left handers while being a starting pitcher.

i mean...
we kinda saw this coming didn’t we? troncoso is 1st in IP for NL relievers, belisario is a close 2nd. hey joe, let’s use some different bullpen arms. please?
Just because they were first and second in innings doesn’t mean they were overworked. Jon Weisman over at Dodger Thoughts has gone over this a ton recently.
True
but in the roto world they have worried about their arms for weeks and with Beli going on the DL, I’m not sure using Jon as the defense is the right call. Jon’s analysis totally ignored what they had done in previous seasons. I didn’t agree with Jon at the time and I still don’t.
Right
but ignoring that for a moment, isn’t it possible if the pitchers are pitch-efficient, and you give them extra rest after long outings, etc, that they could accumulate innings faster than others?
I liken it to using a strict 5-day rotation for the best starters, and end up with 36-37 starts, all with normal rest, and you have a pitcher with 30 extra innings with very limited extra strain.
I don't know if there is a good predictor on this yet
But we shall see another guy thrusted into the 7th inning role again.
just looking at trending isn't gonna cut it
I’ve read what Weisman wrote regarding overuse, but this is a guy who missed all of 2005/2006 and hasn’t pitched above AA before this season. I’d say his body is less ready for these kind of innings and every other day work than the metrics dictate.
Manager Joe Torre said Belisario told him he first felt stiffness warming up for that game, “but it didn’t bother him in the game. He didn’t say anything, and Sunday again it was tight, but didn’t bother him, and he got on the plane and it was tight. He came in today and I saw [trainer] Stan [Conte] working on him and he came in and shook my hand.”
Geez, thanks Torre.
Hes actually

Raffy hits a pitch in the dirt to ground out for the first out.
Its not a Dodgers game if a lead off hitter doesn’t ground out.
Clogging the bases?
Ya, it’s cool. Rules need to be clarified about the not being within 10 total bases and I believe you picked the same 33 TB as someone else did.

For the record I never felt Manny would get booed much
most fans of baseball seem to like his goofiness
There was a couple of articles of Manny switching to a mouth protector last year.
The only other guy I know of was Russell Martin.
I’m sure other people on the team chews too.
Hairston with a home run in his first Oakland at bat
Would have loved to have picked him up considering the cost. Very underrated player. Beane did good.
I always had trouble spelling Teixeira until Eric pointed out how easy it was.
I don’t think he’ll have the same luck with Marc Rzepczynski, though Minky still looks harder to me
The key is repetition
Grudzielanek and Mientkiewicz are easy to remember, especially if you remember “i before e.”
This new guy in Toronto will be a tough one though. :)
I like Kong for Jones more than Klaw (not just because of Keith Law) or Kershaw Knives (that one is just dumb…sorry Tripon)
Al McBean in the 60s was nicknamed "The Gay Blade"
Meant something different in those days: a fancy dresser.

Ethier's not going to keep on swinging good pitches if he's swinging at everything.
Where the hell is his plate discipline?
From Amazing Avenue:
Called Kershaw a young Sandy Kofax

Don't worry about it
I was convinced for years that Eddie Jones and Garret Anderson were the same person :)
We need lots of runs tonight, Clayton is barely going to go five
and the bridge to Broxton is missing a killer B
Meh.
LA had one realistic chance there, a hit from Bison, about a 30% chance. And he did hit it hard.
Castillo might have been safe.
But the throw beat Castillo to 3rd, and if the jeter thing from yesterday shown, that you’re going to be out on that play.
So far from the Bison
we have seen the speed on the infield single
we have seen the arm on the assist at 3rd
Still to come will be a display of power that the Met fans have never seen the likes of from a once almost extinct beast.
That’s because the Dodgers are putting bats in the Pelfrey.

Is there any chance Manny gets enough AB's to qualify for the batting title by the end of the season?
Last year, Manny played a ton, and averaged 4.32 PA per game for the Dodgers.
If he were to average 4.32 PA over the Dodgers final 80 games (assuming he plays every day, highly unlikely), he would end with 474 PA.
There is a rule, however, that if you fall short of the minimum PA, you add hitless AB to your total to see if you still would win the batting title. So if Manny’s at .370 or something and 0 for 28 puts him at .345, and that’s still tops, he would win the batting title.
From a BTF commenter.

Dessens is a guy you root for. He needs a little over a month to reach 10 years of MLB service time, which ensures a full pension. He was called up on June 22.
That's cool
Always like rooting for stories like that, especially when they are accumulating service time on another team :)
I couldn't care less if Dessens gets a pension.
Harsh, but true.
by Brendan Scolari on Jul 7, 2009 5:39 PM PDT up reply actions
Not like the MLBPA's pension plan is going to destroy's MLB's profitablity.
The more people qualify, the better.
I'm not worried about MLB's profitablity
I just don’t really see why it matters to me if Dessens gets paid the rest of his life.
by Brendan Scolari on Jul 7, 2009 5:44 PM PDT up reply actions
I not sure why it has to matter for you.
But among other things with the pension is managed healthcare for him and the rest of his family.

How good the old NY stadiums were.
Collins wanted to talk about Old Yankees stadium, and Ebbets field, and Lyons was saying how big a dump Shea was.

My bad, but all these people against Manny
getting my blood boiling. Fans, I can deal with. But when it comes to the umps deciding whether to let Manny play or not, I’m not down with that.
You think the NBA is the only one with mafia refs?
Here’s a MAFIA UMP MLB! Right here! Do you not see it? Whack this fool.
Oh come on guys
Lets not get all conspiracy theory mad because of two questionable calls.
The trick is that the ump can't allow himself to screw over the rest of the Dodgers, or it'll be too obvious and get himself in trouble.
the call isn't the issue
it’s the fact that he got thrown out for doing nothing
by bucknellbruin on Jul 7, 2009 6:04 PM PDT up reply actions
Arguing balls and strikes is an automatic ejection

Strike zone appears to be high and wide all night
At least according to Brooks Baseball. The red shapes are all the called strikes.
So the Dodgers got the widest outside strike called?
I’m going to go ahead and lower my anger meter to something less than “sickening” then :)
I think the most comforting stat from this start for Kershaw
is that he only had 2 walks. As long as he can keep his control sharp he’ll be awesome.

"The right to swing my fist ends where the other man's nose begins." -Oliver W. Holmes
By my count
The Dodgers have had 20 base runners so far and the Mets have had 6. Domination.
The Mets have too many cast off relievers.
Actually that probably applies to their whole team.
I think the Mets need a new stadium . . .
. . . you know, to turn that ship around next season.
How many times has Sandoval gotten an RBI BB this season?
Exactly. Vote Bison!

Off topic, but
Has Bill Plaschke written a diatribe yet about St. Louis closer Ryan Franklin being honored as an All-Star after having served a 10-game suspension in 2005 for testing positive for steroids (the rules were different then)?
Question from Collins and Lyons:
Which tandem would you rather have: Lincecum and Cain or Bills and Kershaw?
Shouldn't that "losmets.com" banner behind home plate read-
- “lostmets.com” ‘cause they can’t seem to find the runs.

So he just might reach one of his incentive bonuses after all.

$75,000 for 40 GF
$75,000 for 50 GF
$75,000 for 60 GF
