Dodgers Hope For More Of The Same In Game Two

It was a raucous atmosphere in San Francisco last night, but the Dodgers were able to silence the frenzied crowd by taking the opening game of the series, 4-2.

Randy Wolf hopes to do some more silencing tonight, as he starts for the Dodgers.  Wolf is a good bet to pitch at least six innings, as he has done in each of his last eight starts.  Wolf has pitched six innings or more in 20 of 24 starts this season.  Wolf has faced the Giants just once this season, not surprisingly garnering a no-decision.  In that game, Wolf gave up three unearned runs in the first inning, but rebounded by retiring 16 of his final 18 batters, pitching six innings and keeping the Dodgers in a game they would eventually lose 5-4.

Joe Martinez, the 26-year old rookie who was hit in the head by a line drive in April, returned to the Giants last week, winning his first major league start, in Houston.  Martinez is a fastball/curve pitcher with excellent control (1.9 walks per nine innings in five years in the minor leagues), and was described by Baseball America as "a groundball machine."

Since the return of Manny Ramirez, the Dodger offense has hit .304/.375/.459 in 17 games on the road, averaging 5.32 runs per contest.

Nate Schierholtz is scheduled to come off the disabled list for the Giants today, and that will likely lead to less playing time for Randy Winn, and perhaps even Aaron Rowand.  From Andrew Baggarly of the Contra Costa Times:

Bochy wouldn't say for certain that Winn and center fielder Aaron Rowand would sit more often down the stretch. But he acknowledged that he would meet with both players before today's game.

"I'll sit down with them and talk about it," Bochy said. "We know it's going to be a challenge. We'll rotate this around, do the matchup thing. We all have one agenda, and that's to win."

Orlando Hudson is expected to sit out tonight's game with a groin injury.

Great performance by Kuroda last night

I’d love to see Wolf go deep into the game, and hopefully come out with a win. Great tweaking of the line- up last night by Torre. Could we see a simialr line-up tonight?

by Penos Cabell on Aug 11, 2009 2:51 PM PDT reply actions

I would guess
Loney is back in the lineup and Castro starts in place of Hudson.

I too liked the lineup change which is to say I like Martin moving up in the lineup. Hope to see more of that tonight.

by Michael White on Aug 11, 2009 2:55 PM PDT up reply actions

Agreed on Martin

I think batting second is the right place for him. He is heating up. Getting on base and helping to set the table for the big bats is what he should have been doing from the get go.

by Penos Cabell on Aug 11, 2009 3:01 PM PDT up reply actions

As long as Torre doesn’t make him bunt..

And I left out “as he”. Slow and inaccurate. I am the commenting equivalent of Jason Schmidt. Without the hard work at rehab.

by David Young on Aug 11, 2009 3:06 PM PDT up reply actions   1 recs

I agree. Now that his power is completely gone he doesn’t do much batting lower in the lineup.

why dont the dodgers send down castro for a week

and bring up tony abreu? he would give the dodgers a better offensive threat then castro

by matthewmafa on Aug 11, 2009 2:58 PM PDT reply actions

Castro is a long-time veteran who long ago exhausted his options.

Does Abreu make that play to end the game last night? (Rhetorical question.)

by David Young on Aug 11, 2009 3:04 PM PDT up reply actions

In other words

The only way Castro comes off the 25-man is via the DL or the DFA.

by David Young on Aug 11, 2009 3:07 PM PDT up reply actions

Abreu is wasting away down there.

 Castro stinks.

Although he did save Broxton’s fat ass last night by diving for the ball hit up the middle.

by Penos Cabell on Aug 11, 2009 3:04 PM PDT up reply actions

I think Jeff Kent is perfectly positioned right at this moment.

I want more than just the same.

I’d like five, maybe six runs.

The Giants have 11 wins and 42 losses this year when allowing four or more runs.

Scoring 4 or more w/Mr. ND on the mound has proven to be a challenge…what’s his runs support?

by KellyStephen on Aug 11, 2009 3:28 PM PDT up reply actions

…damn…typing “ND” made me queasy

by KellyStephen on Aug 11, 2009 3:28 PM PDT up reply actions

ND implies:

1) having a tough time scoring
2) probably won’t get to 10 wins

by Eric Stephen on Aug 11, 2009 3:32 PM PDT via mobile up reply actions   1 recs

They have a K-State-esque schedule this year and still won’t see 10 victories.

by KellyStephen on Aug 11, 2009 3:35 PM PDT up reply actions

Some perspective

The Giants’ win% when allowing 4+ runs is .208, which is 25th (out of 30) in MLB.

The Dodgers’ win% when allowing 4+ runs is .364 (20-35), which is 6th in MLB.

Angels are the best (32-39, .451), and the Royals are the worst (11-60, .155).

The aggregate MLB win% this year when allowing 4+ runs in a game is .281 (551-1408)

by Eric Stephen on Aug 11, 2009 3:51 PM PDT up reply actions

Joe Martinez sounds like someone Manny should own. Or Andre. Or James.

by meercatjohn on Aug 11, 2009 3:32 PM PDT reply actions

That reminds me

A little while back the Dodgers signed a former Angels #1 pick to a minor league deal, Joe Torres. Nothing to get excited about, but it’s interesting that the guy is still trying; released a couple times, 26, and in A-ball, some dudes give it up by then, e.g., Justin Orenduff.

Don't quote me on this

But I heard we claimed a major star from a small market club looking to dump money, but it’s unlikely to lead to anything.

Do you have a name you would like to share?

by Eric Stephen on Aug 11, 2009 3:52 PM PDT up reply actions

“major star” and “small market club”

I have no clue who it is or if this is just someone making stuff up. Any guesses?

by silverwidow on Aug 11, 2009 3:55 PM PDT up reply actions

How funny would it be if we happened to trade for Halladay after the deadline? I mean, no way he passes through the AL, then all the way through the NL for us to claim him. Would be awesome though.

I like the Kazmir guess

by Eric Stephen on Aug 11, 2009 3:58 PM PDT up reply actions

any chance of that being actually true?

The chances are probly very slim, but could you imagine if we trade for Kazmir and he pulls his sh*t together? A rotation of:

1. Bills
2. Kazmir
3. Kershaw
4. Kuroda
5. Wolf

Damn, my mouth is starting to water, lol.

by Ivdown on Aug 11, 2009 3:59 PM PDT up reply actions

Whoa whoa… did you just arbitrarily set that rotation or are you saying Kazmir is better than Clayton?

Good luck having him get all the way to the Dodgers through waivers. It would be like trying to sneak a below average, past his prime hitter in front of Brian Sabean; it just can’t happen.

Did anyone hear about Chris B. Young being optioned to AAA today?

I remember back in 07 when Dback fans were so high on this guy, and I am glad to see that Kemp’s stock is just rising while a young “stud” CF from a division rival’s stock is just free falling.

Might we see the end of Rich Aurilia?

When reporters were let into the clubhouse after tonight’s 4-2 loss, Rich Aurilia was having a conversation by his locker with bench coach Ron Wotus. It ended with the two men hugging.

That often means a players has been told to pack up his locker, but the Giants made no announcement after the game and Aurilia said as he left, “I’ve got nothing to say, guys. See you tomorrow.”

Garko mashes lefties, Molina is better against them, and Sandoval is just plain good. Winn hits this against Wolf (in only 21 PAs though): .368 / .400 / .737 / 1.137. Lewis and the pitcher are the only two LH bats in that lineup.
