The Martin/Manny double standard

So I've noticed that there are some brutal posts about Russell Martin posts out there on the web, particularly after yesterday's disaster inning.  By contrast, Manny Ramirez, who is batting well under .200 since his grand slam, keeps getting comments like, "When Manny gets hot again," like it's a given that he will.

As far as I'm concerned, EVERYONE deserves a slack from time to time, but the level of vitriol against Martin, especially when compared to Manny's treatment, is mind-numbing.  Manny SHOULD be under more scrutiny, whether you like it or not (and most Dodger fans do not) because of what he was caught doing, and is presumably not anymore.  We SHOULD be paying extra close attention to his performance.  Yet over and over again, we keep hearing about Martin's "declining" performance, even though he has been up and down at different points all season, whereas with Manny, every bad at-bat is just one at-bat closer to the day he magically gets out of his slump and hits .400 again to carry us to the postseason.

I hope that BOTH these guys get it together, but even more so, it'd be nice to see the same standards applied to ALL players.

You want the same standard applied to a HOF

as applied to a guy whose been in a slug slump since the all-star game of 2008? Between a guy who is still slug .592 for the season and has a .938 OPS in his last 28 days. I see no double standard, Martin has slumped most of the year, Manny has slumped for one week. Russ has 14 XBH in 390 at bats. That is about at the bottom of the barrel if not the exact bottom.

Anyone who has watched Manny play defense since he came into the league knows not to expect much so dumping on him when he sucks at a part of the game we already know he sucks at seems pointless.. When Martin blows a game like last night with his glove/arm and he can’t hit then he gets dumped on.

Plenty of Dodger bloggers and posters will defend Martin pointing to his OB and defense but I’m not sure a slug % of .321 can really be defended. Not many full time catchers actually improve offensively as the season wears on so expecting Martin to have a resurgence is probably not a smart bet. Martin has to be tops with the glove to make up for the weak bat. Walks are great, but when that is the only thing you bring to the plate, in my opinion you aren’t bringing much to the plate. He couldn’t have a more empty .370 OBP if he tried.

On the plus side Martin had a great July fueled by his .358 BABIP and 23 singles (3 XBH). Maybe he will continue that trend into late summer, and if he does I’ll be the first to say I was wrong and be very happy about it.

But back to your point, if someone like Manny Ramirez doesn’t get a pass for a weeks slump then who does?

good points, but...

First off, ABSOLUTELY I want the same standard applied- if anything, it’s the other way around! Martin should get LESS scrunity and criticism than Manny because of this, especially considering that Martin’s given the team so much of an effort since he first came up- for Manny, it’s just been a year (albeit a great year) minus 50. And yes, I agree with your assertion that Manny’s “slump” is nowhere near Martin’s, but it is still WAAAAY out of proportion with how much hostility Russell’s gotten from so many. Personally, I’m happy with both of them at this point.

“Anyone who has watched Manny play defense since he came into the league knows not to expect much so dumping on him when he sucks at a part of the game we already know he sucks at seems pointless.. When Martin blows a game like last night with his glove/arm and he can’t hit then he gets dumped on.”

Come on, Phil- dumping on Manny because we “know” he sucks defensively seems pointless?! First off, ironically, Manny’s defense has been GREAT lately. His reputation for being lousy defensively has more to do with his not trying, which we have (mercifully) seen so little of in LA. But since when doesn’t a player get dumped on because we already have lowered expectations of them in a certain area? Again, if anything, they get MORE scrutiny.

“Martin has to be tops with the glove to make up for the weak bat. "

Weak relative to his past performance, not relative to other catchers. He’s done ok- maybe needs more rest than Torre’s given him, yet is too proud to ask for it himself. Just speculating. But his defensive numbers are just fine.

“He couldn’t have a more empty .370 OBP if he tried.”

That’s the kind of Martin-bashing that I see everywhere now. Even though he actually HAS a good OBP…well, it doesn’t really count, since it’s an “empty” one! He can’t control what people do behind him or in front of him, and he HAS gotten some key hits, as well.

Bottom line- This is the best team in baseball. Let’s just be happy about it, criticize a guy when he messes up during a game, and move on to the next one.

Manny’s slump is all of 8 games. Right after he got hit on the hand.

Martin stopped hitting for power after last year’s all-star break. He doesn’t have nearly the track record of Manny to earn any extra benefit of the doubt, at least that Manny does.

I'm looking forward, not back

I am far from a Manny detractor, but just look at the facts. Manny was slightly off coming out of the All Star Break, and took a nosedive after the grand slam (which was AFTER the hand injury, as we all know). It’s not a big deal, and it wouldn’t be ANY deal if we didn’t have to acknowledge that he is now 37, and presumably, off the stuff. I don’t attribute his career to the “help”, for the most part, but at his age, you have to wonder if it will have any noticeable effect going forward. I hope the answer is no, and we’ll find out soon.

But that’s not even my main point. My point was about Manny’s treatment versus Martin, and- just my opinion- it has NOTHING to do with the length of the slump. Russell Martin hit well over .300 in July, yet many, if not most, fans are giving him a lighter version- ok, MUCH lighter version- of the Andruw Jones treatment. Manny seems to get the benefit of the doubt NOT because of his track record- if anything, hometown fans are MORE demanding of superstars that come to their city late in their career- but because he just happens to be “the guy” in Los Angeles right now. I’ve been to a lot of Dodger games this year, and most of the time, at least half the crowd is busy hitting the beachball until Manny comes up.

Bottom line- Martin is WAY too young to give up on- especially consider that he is STILL an above average catcher (look it up)- and I hope some hometown cooking gets Manny going again.

The bottom line is that Manny simply has not slumped at all since he joined the Dodgers, until this past week.

Coming out of the All-Star break, before the Bobbleslam, Manny hit .263/.364/.579 in six games. That is not a slump.

After the slam, Manny is hitting only .162/.279/.216, but that is only over 9 games (including tonight). I think most people are willing to give Manny the benefit of the doubt, especially given how awesome he has been at every other point of his (active) Dodger career.

Regarding Martin, I agree with you that the criticism is overblown, but only in that anyone that wants to get rid of him is shortsighted. The bottom line is that Martin has fallen precipitously since the ASB in 2008:

Career before 2008 ASG: .289/.373/.450, 39 HR in 1474 PA
Career since 2008 ASG: .262/.370/.330, 6 HR in 659 PA (including tonight)

That is a huge, huge drop.

I still appreciate a catcher who gets on base as much as Martin does, and I don’t want to get rid of him at all. But I am disappointed in his regression and concerned that he is more likely to get worse, not better in the future.

Light Andruw Jones treatment?

I have heard nary a boo for Martin at Dodger Stadium. I’ve been tough on Martin because his previous standard was high but no one is booing Russell Martin, unless it starts this week and I doubt it.

not so much at Dodger Stadium....

I meant more on the message boards, the talk shows, the print media, etc.. It’s been building all season, but it reached a boiling point after that unmistakably bad half inning. After Sunday night’s game, it seems like all is well right now…

not mentioned enough with catchers

Is pitcher management/selection. Tough to seperate both halves of the battery, but RM (or whatever his actual name is) seems to be damn fine (408 runs allowed, second only to the giants) at that aspect of the job, which may well be the most important.

I wished Ausmus played more

I think Martin might be getting tired. He is improving his hitting, but the wear and tear on your body as the everyday catcher can’t be good for your stamina and productivity in the playoff run.

Both guys are fine

Not really displeased with either. Martin had a bad day, meh. Manny had a bad week, meh. Both still contribute. There are more concerning areas, but not many, really. I expect more out of both Martin/Manny but neither are going to kill this team with their play in the big picture.

What saves Martin for me is...

His leadership role. He’s a tough kid mentally and anyone in that locker room could tell you that he’s trying out there. In a recent radio interview, Donnie baseball said he has been working with Martin more than everyone else. In one game he’s hitting key hits, in another he’s zero for four. As you watch a game now, whenever Martin gets a hit everyone compliments Martin more than others. Why? For the fact that everyone knows he’s having a bad year, and messing up in that inning on Saturday that gave the game to the Braves wont make it any better. We all want him to have the season he had a couple years ago.

Manny’s been in a slump for a week now. Can’t give him much crap for it because we were on the road, lets see what he does at home. I’m sure the home crowd will back him up. I think the story about him testing positive back in ‘03 has bugged him. If he doesn’t start hitting again after this week, then you can give him all the scrutiny you want.

Really?

A two week slump and he can get scrutiny. What would you guys have done if he’d done what he did in Boston last year when he slumped for a whole month?

We should be glad he didn’t break his hand, that is about the only thought I’m giving about Manny.

Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen

This is LA

as long as we stay afloat, a 2 week slump is just a stat-buster

As long as we win a ton of games this homestand, Manny can hit 200 if he wants for another week.

(...one month later)

So let it be written, so let it be done! (more or less…)
