Wolf Pulls Double Duty To Beat Cubs

Tonight's game belonged to Randy Wolf, again, as he produced both on the mound and at the plate, giving the Dodgers a 2-1 win over the Cubs in the second game of their four-game series at Dodger Stadium.

After Orlando Hudson reached base on an error by Aramis Ramirez to extend the second inning, Silver Slugger Wolf followed with a booming two-run double to centerfield, providing the Dodger offense for the night.  Wolf now leads all major league pitchers with 11 RBI on the season, and has reached base in five straight plate appearances.

On the mound, Wolf was even better, allowing only three runners to reach base in his seven innings.  The lone Cubs' run scored after a walk and a sacrifice, when Ryan Theriot got the team's only hit of the night, a single to drive in Sam Fuld.  In his last 11 starts, Wolf is 5-3 with a 2.82 ERA.  He has pitched at least six innings in each of those last 11 starts, as well as 23 of 27 starts this season.  Wolf has gone at least seven innings in each of his last four starts.

Matt Kemp was the only Dodger with two hits tonight, one of which was a double.  Kemp also stole his 26th base of the season.

Fuld leaped over the wall in right centerfield to rob Manny Ramirez of a leadoff home run in the eighth inning.  However, the Dodgers didn't need the insurance run, as Jonathan Broxton shut the Cubs down in order in the ninth to earn his 27th save of the season.

Charlie Haeger brings his knuckleball to national TV tomorrow afternoon, facing Ted Lilly on Fox.

WP - Randy Wolf (8-6):  7 IP, 1 hit, 1 run, 2 walks, 5 strikeouts

LP - Randy Wells (9-6):  6.2 IP, 7 hits, 2 unearned runs, 2 walks, 3 strikeouts

Sv - Jonathan Broxton (27):  1 IP, 2 strikeouts

What else can you say about Wolf at this point?

He’s been amazing. Game in and game out. I hate to use “godsend type language,” but what else can you say?

Yeah, he’s one of those guys I never would have thought the Dodgers would need to count on, but he has just been rock solid, above and beyond my expectations.

To think, I compared him to Odalis Perez before the season :)

Well, on second thought that was right because (hat tip to Dodger Thoughts) the last time the Dodgers won a game in which a position player didn’t have an RBI was one week shy of seven years ago when Odalis beat the D-Backs 1-0 by hitting a solo HR.

I wasn’t crazy on Wolf either. I was upset about losing Lowe for what I considered nothing, but knew the Lowe contract was a bad one overall. I figured Wolf was a middle ground fill in. I’ve never have been happier to have been wrong since USC hired Pete Carroll (over my objections).

True Blue LA = Blanket Coverage This Weekend

Phil will be covering the game tomorrow, and I will be there as well, in the stands, occasionally commenting here but probably Tweeting more often since its easier from the phone to do so.

I will be covering the game Sunday.

No Contest IMO

I just wonder if he’d get the nod in a Game 1?

At some point, you are what you are, and what the stats say you are. We’re at that point now. We’re at the point where Wolf is our guy in Game 1, no matter what perception is. Same with the Phillies and Cole Hames – all I keep hearing is how they’re a lock for the WS with their great 1, 2 now with Lee, cuz “Hamels will turn it around.” I’m asking “when?” at this point.

Once the Cubs series is over

The Dodgers are either playing the Giants, the Rockies or teams with a combined record of .410 (Washington, Pittsburgh, Cincinnati and, of course, Arizona and SD).

by Paul Scott on Aug 21, 2009 11:41 PM PDT reply actions

WPA

Wolf easily led all hitters and pitchers in WPA (win probability added), a stat covered by the great statistical site Fangraphs.

In Wolf’s previous start vs Arizona. He was #1 in WPA for all pitchers and a close second for all hitters, right behind Ethier.

Not bad, eh?

What are the chances of us resigning Wolf and what would it take? I don’t think I would want to go more than 2 years. I doubt that would get it done.

by craigbro on Aug 22, 2009 7:55 AM PDT reply actions

No Wolf

Billingsley
Kershaw
Kuroda
McDonald
Elbert

That is the rotation I want to see next year. But Colletti and Torre, inveterate veteran fetishists that they are, won’t let that happen. I would only be okay with re-signing Wolf as an alternative to a bunch of other possible dumb moves to acquire “proven veterans.”

by CanuckDodger on Aug 22, 2009 8:10 AM PDT reply actions

There's a problem with that rotation

Both Elbert and McDonald won’t pitch more 100-110 innings this year so how many innings could you expect to have them pitch in 2010.

by bhsportsguy on Aug 22, 2009 10:16 AM PDT up reply actions

Roster moves

Okay, it’s obvious that Schmidt will get transferred to the 60-day in order to activate Padilla.

Now, what about Eyechart, X-Man, and Ohman? I doubt we’re going to DFA three other guys to get them on the roster in September. But, I guess if a spot is needed, Repko will get the boot.

by silverwidow on Aug 22, 2009 8:37 AM PDT reply actions

DFA Jesus Castillo?

The Dodgers, at this point, surely can’t see him ever making the 25-man roster.

by CanuckDodger on Aug 22, 2009 9:03 AM PDT reply actions

The Dodgers usually don't DFA somebody.

They usually fake an injury so they can stash him on the 60 day DL

by Tripon on Aug 22, 2009 10:01 AM PDT up reply actions

Speaking of wonky DL moves

the Dodgers have to find spots on the 40 man spot for

- Padilla
- Eyechart
- Ohman
- Lindblom

by Tripon on Aug 22, 2009 10:02 AM PDT reply actions

Won't need to worry about Lindblom

Because he’s not going to be added to the 40-man roster this year, at least not prior to when the Dodgers need to make their adjustments for the Rule V draft.

One guy they could let go but probably won’t is Jason Repko, they could do it after the season to open up a spot.

Will Ohman doesn’t get moved until they figure out if Kuroda is okay, Haegar is probably holding on to his spot.

by bhsportsguy on Aug 22, 2009 10:14 AM PDT up reply actions

Lindblom doesn't need to be added until after 2011

But that doesn’t make a difference; he’s the best relief prospect the Dodgers have right and he’s doing well at AAA. There’s a good chance he’ll be added.

by silverwidow on Aug 22, 2009 10:18 AM PDT up reply actions

But then why did they wait until September

When Beliasario and Wade were on the DL and Troncoso was gassed, Kuo was still rehabbing, why didn’t they bring him up then?

He may be the best relief pitching prospect but since he doesn’t have to get added on for 2 more years, why do it now. Is Lindblom suddenly going to pitch ahead of McDonald, Belisario, Troncoso, Sherill, and Kuo. He probably wouldn’t even pitch ahead of Elbert if he was here. And yes, even Mota would be used before him,

I could see the Dodgers calling Trayvon Robinson before Lindblom (which won’t happen either).

by bhsportsguy on Aug 22, 2009 10:23 AM PDT up reply actions

It has to do with the rules MLB set up for option years and eligibility status for the post season roster.

August 31st is the only day that you can add a minor leauger and not have his option used up, and the last day a player can be considered for the post season roster.

Also, if you think Lindblom will be ready by next year, which he likely is. Calling him up at the end of this year doesn’t seem to be like such a stretch.

by Tripon on Aug 22, 2009 10:28 AM PDT up reply actions

"Is Lindblom suddenly going to pitch ahead of McDonald, Belisario, Troncoso, Sherill, and Kuo."

Possibly. McDonald had never pitched in the majors last year, and he came up and impressed Torre, next thing you know he’s on the post-season roster ahead of Troncoso and pitching high-leverage situations in the playoffs. Considering the love Torre was giving Lindblom in the preseason, I don’t think this door is shut.

by Michael White on Aug 22, 2009 10:49 AM PDT up reply actions

When Beliasario and Wade were on the DL and Troncoso was gassed, Kuo was still rehabbing, why didn’t they bring him up then?

They obviously didn’t want to burn an option in the event he needed to go back down.

He may be the best relief pitching prospect but since he doesn’t have to get added on for 2 more years, why do it now.

Because he’s a lock to make the team next year in some capacity and there’s no drawback in calling him up in September with the expanded roster.

Is Lindblom suddenly going to pitch ahead of McDonald, Belisario, Troncoso, Sherill, and Kuo. He probably wouldn’t even pitch ahead of Elbert if he was here. And yes, even Mota would be used before him,

Since when does he have to pitch ahead of guys to be a September call-up? Look at Meloan in 2007. He certainly wasn’t ahead of anyone but he got the call because of his great season.

I could see the Dodgers calling Trayvon Robinson before Lindblom (which won’t happen either).

Robinson isn’t hitting in AA, so your theory doesn’t hold much water. Lindblom could be a useful asset, even if he’s not pitching in CRUCIAL spots, which is apparently your requirement. There is such a thing as saving innings for your playoff bound relievers and things of that nature.

by silverwidow on Aug 22, 2009 10:28 AM PDT reply actions

I don’t think Lindblom is a lock for a roster spot next year.

by Eric Stephen on Aug 22, 2009 10:36 AM PDT via mobile up reply actions

I thought you meant out of spring training, on the team all year. That’s what I was referring to.

by Eric Stephen on Aug 22, 2009 10:38 AM PDT via mobile up reply actions

I don't think he's a lock

but I think he has a really good shot. He almost made it this year. I think Dodger management likes him.

by Michael White on Aug 22, 2009 10:51 AM PDT up reply actions

Look it could happen but the Dodgers are generally a prettty pragmatic team

when it comes to roster moves and especially when it involves young players. So that is the main reason why I don’t think it will happen.

Certainly had Beliasario not made the club, Lindblom had a ton of momentum back in ST. But I think Belisario and Sherill (along with Kuo) being on the team makes it less likely.

Plus you add in the roster moves they would have to make, just makes it seem to me that the last pitch Lindblom will throw this year, he will be wearing an Isotope uniform.

This is not based on any evaluation of how good he is or his potential. Rarely are moves made for those reasons alone.

From ESPN Insider:
2. Except for HRs, Haeger’s knuckleball was tricky
Knuckleballer Charlie Haeger made his Dodgers debut Monday and threw seven solid innings against the Cardinals, allowing three runs on just five hits and no walks (and no wild pitches).

The only damage came from the long ball. Albert Pujols led off the fourth inning with a home run that tied the game, and Rick Ankiel hit a two-run bomb to give the Cardinals the lead for good in the seventh.

Haeger threw knuckleballs on 78 of his 80 pitches, and the pitch was especially effective at inducing weak ground balls when it floated over the outer part of the plate:

Where Haeger’s knuckleball finished vs. Cardinals
Outside Middle Inside
Pct. of pitches 41.0 33.3 25.6
BA against .083 .273 .333
Ground-ball pct. 72.7 50.0 33.3

Haeger’s outside knuckleballs weren’t just hard to make contact with; they landed for strikes 88 percent of the time compared to just 38 percent of the time for inside pitches. That enabled Haeger to work ahead in the count all night, with 12 of the 27 plate appearances ending on pitcher’s counts.

Next up for Haeger are the Cubs on Saturday. Cubs hitters might want to get some advice from Alfonso Soriano, who handled knuckleballer Tim Wakefield pretty well back when Soriano was in the AL. He hit .306 (11-for-36) against Wakefield with four home runs.

by Tripon on Aug 22, 2009 10:51 AM PDT reply actions

but tim wakefield knuckle ball is totally different from haegars

haegars knuckleball kills Right handed Hitters whilee making left handed hitters look like albert pujols.

For Wakefield, if a batter is a switch hitter, they might still bat right handed against him because right handers slug a high percentage against his knuckle ball

so fukudome and bradley and koyie hill might have some success if they start but i doubt ramirez lee soriano theriot or any of the rightys will unless you are albert which nobody is

Living in OC i end up listening and watching their games a bit. They’re horrible on both radio and TV. Maybe I’m spoiled with Vin, but man they are bad. Then again, I’m not a Monday or Steiner fan either, and Lyons is a joke so it could be all Vin’s fault.
