The Vicente Padilla Era Begins
Vicente Padilla makes his Dodger debut today, the 24th pitcher used by the Dodgers this season and the 11th to start a game. He was 8-6 with a 4.92 ERA and 4.94 FIP with Texas, but was released early last week. Shortly thereafter, the Dodgers signed him to a minor league contract and, since he hadn't pitched since August 5, he threw one minor league start, allowing two runs in five innings for Albuquerque on Saturday.
Jorge De La Rosa has won three straight starts for Colorado, even though in his last one he gave up six runs in six innings against the Giants.
Andre Ethier has three hits in each of the first two games of the series.
What can we expect today from Padilla? Who knows? There are a wide range of possibilities, but hopefully the Dodger offense can come through again to lessen the burden on Padilla.
The Dodgers are 9-2 in "rubber games" (final game of a series tied 1-1) on the road this season.

That seems about right

…says my simulator. (I’ve become an aspiring Xei Frank) :)

6 IP, 6H, 2 ER, 6 hits
strands a bunch of runners out of luck, earns himself another start. Basically, a Jason Schmidt performance.

i didn’t need to say 6 hits twice.
I meant 2 walks.

missed the Ks, 6 Ks, including striking out the side in the 3rd

o shit... someone chose somethign very close to mine so ill go with
7 inning 1 hit 1 run 3 walks 3 Ks
Off topic, but
Perfect combo. Pitcher Lance Broadway was called up by the New York Mets yesterday. That is the right name for the right city. He was obviously miscast in Chicago.

Apparently, since July 3 (as heard on Colin Cowherd’s radio show) the Cardinals are 27-3 in games started by Carpenter, Wainwright, and Pineiro.
I looked it up…they are in fact 28-3 if you go back to July 1:
10-0 when Pineiro starts
9-1 when Carp starts
9-2 when Wainwright starts (slacker!)
by Eric Stephen on Aug 27, 2009 9:37 AM PDT up reply actions
ERAs during that stretch:
Waiwright – 1.21!!!!
Carp – 1.92
Pineiro – 2.65
IP / start
Carp – 7.50
Wainwright – 7.45
Pineiro – 7.11
That is pretty much the definition of getting it done.

Nope, just show that they are peaking far too early :)
by Eric Stephen on Aug 27, 2009 9:42 AM PDT up reply actions
I’d say less thn 30%. He has been great, but doesn’t have the bulk numbers. I still think its LIncecum’s to lose, although Wainwright and Carpenter will make a run

that info was on mlb network last night. scary shit.
by KellyStephen on Aug 27, 2009 10:51 AM PDT up reply actions
you know whats sad
the dodgers have Lost 7 Straight game in which Kershaw has started…. and kershaw has had some good starts in there.. 2 games where he shut em out for at least 7 innings and 2 games in which he allowed 2 ER in at least 6….
and this game game kershaw loosing streak has come right after a 7 game kershaw games started winning streak
Well
We could have beat Carpenter and Wainwright in the last series… I’m not so impressed as I was a minute ago.

Sam PHL has an interesting observation in a comment at the end of last night's recap post
Yikes!
Have you seen Padilla’s career platoon splits? Lefties have a .862 OPS against him in 3000 PA. So lefties have historically hit him similar to how Matt Kemp has hit this year. Not good since the Rockies will probably trot out a bunch of lefties: Smith, Helton, Hawpe, Stewart, and maybe Gonzalez.
Hopefully the meltdown De La Rosa shows up instead of the shutdown De La Rosa.
by Sam PHL on Aug 27, 2009 7:36 AM PDT reply reply actions actions 0 recs
But only in '02-'03 was his split against LH batters good.
‘03 was six years ago. I don’t think he’s the same guy now.
That trend is there from 2004 – present. His 2009 OPS allowed to LHs is also .862.
We’re really going to hate Brad Hawpe today.
Rox batting order could be:
EYJr (L)
Smith (L)
Helton (L)
Tulo®
Hawpe (L)
Stewart (L)
catcher®
Quintanilla (L) or Barmes®
lefties have a .862 OPS against padilla
dont worry guys… de la rosa isnt far too behind against Right handed Hitters… This year he has a .833 OPS against them so our right handed better be ready to do some damage today
if furcal doesnt start today
any chance its abrue instead of castro?
#Dodgers lineup: Furcal SS Kemp CF Ethier RF Ramirez LF Blake 3B Loney 1B Hudson 2B Ausmus C Padilla P

I could see Brad as being better than JR in terms of Padilla
especially when his control starts to get horrible in the 3d and the tantrum begins.

I couldn’t have been any less surprised to see the gold chain. He looks like he belongs in Marina Del Rey in the 70’s.
I have as little faith in Padilla as the Purple Mountain Boys had in Fogg last night.
Its a classic photo
I had to use that picture, especially since there are no pictures of Padilla yet in a Dodger uni.
by Eric Stephen on Aug 27, 2009 11:03 AM PDT up reply actions
god that picture looks sleazy
button up your shirt. go easy on the hair products. stop looking at my girl.
padilla?!
is this the man that throws a Curve ball SLOWER then randy Wolf???
oddly enough
some major bookies don’t want to write an o/u line… the only game today where that is the case. it should be 11 IMO.
Diamond Leung on Schmidt
diamond83 Jason Schmidt, who is mulling retirement, had his season officially ended today.

Do we know who is going down for Padilla yet though? Abreu or McDonald?
Rockies lineup, per Troy Renck of the Denver Post:
CF Gonzalez
LF Smith
1B Helton
SS Tulowitzki
RF Hawpe
3B Stewart
2B Barmes
C Torrealba
LHP De La Rosa
wow gonzalez?
all hes going to do is bunt!

I didn't understand the big deal
from what I gathered he only had one stitch. Wrap it up and play like a man.
by meercatjohn on Aug 27, 2009 10:49 AM PDT up reply actions
oh..
i thought he like cut his hand on a steak knife…i didnt know it wasnt severe.. i thought it was bad… but ifs its just a little stitch he will be alright
by matthewmafa on Aug 27, 2009 10:51 AM PDT up reply actions
He’s healthy enough to hit, at least in the estimation of the team.
by Eric Stephen on Aug 27, 2009 10:49 AM PDT up reply actions
If Brad Penny had been available before we signed Padilla who would we have preferred?
Penny wants to sign with someone who will put him on their playoff roster. Once Cook is back would the Rockies have room for Penny on the playoff roster? He doesn’t want to pitch in relief and the Rockies have four better starters.
Dodgers no, Giants No, Braves No, Marlins? (Maybe), Rangers?, Angels?
MLB is just simulcasting Scully’s PT call.

Actually, they are busy cherry picking losses off of their previous schedule and wins off of ours to put themselves in first place.

You misread that...
We are second place, you are in first. We need to beat you to prove otherwise. Don’t worry, we will eventually.
you are in first.

a 5-inning line simulator could be interesting. i think that’s a somewhat new vegas thing. interesting, insofar as you are really betting on the starter.
