Dodgers Regain Control Of NL West
Superb pitching and some timely hitting propelled the Dodgers to a 3-2 win to take the pivotal three game series, leaving Denver with a four-game lead over the Rockies.
Vicente Padilla pitched well in his Dodger debut, allowing two runs over his five innings, becoming the 20th Dodger to earn a victory this season, a club record. He was supported by a mammoth two-run homer in the first by Matt Kemp, and a two-out RBI single by Rafael Furcal in the top of the sixth to give the Dodgers the lead.
The ball was then turned over to the Dodger bullpen, which meant lights out for the Rockies. The killer quartet of Hong-Chih Kuo, Ramon Troncoso, George Sherrill, and Jonathan Broxton combined to get the final 12 outs of the game, allowing five hits while striking out seven.
The Dodger pitching has been awesome this month, with a 3.16 ERA, and they have allowed three runs or less in 10 of their last 11 games.
The Dodgers have won 12 of 15 games against Colorado this season.
WP - Vicente Padilla (9-6): 5 IP, 6 hits, 2 runs, 1 walk, 4 strikeouts
LP - Jorge De La Rosa (12-9): 7 IP, 8 hits, 3 runs, 4 walks, 7 strikeouts
Sv - Jonathan Broxton (28): 1.1 IP, 2 hits, 2 strikeouts

For the record, I’ve got no problem w/Barkley. I have problems w/Barkley right now. He has shown a tendency to take too many risks and go against exactly what you say there, turning the ball over. I think Corp will do a better job with that this year.
I’m fine w/Barkley starting Saturday as a test and, if he does poorly the Trojans will still win and Corp will get the start in Columbus. If he excels, then he stays the starter, Corp transfers after this year, and I owe my brother a 6-pack.
And I agree w/the D; they’re gonna be pretty good. the D-line seems to be very fast from what i’ve read, and their secondary has some assasins and cover folks. Mays is THE MAN!

by Michael White on Aug 27, 2009 4:11 PM PDT up reply actions
I think that's attainable
I was really calling for a number 6 seed this year until my favorite player got yanked away from me. I think Griffin can be a stud, but it’s unfair to him to assume he can step right in and score like Randolph did (and lack of scoring will continue to be a problem for the Clips.) Griffin will likely struggle initially getting used to the speed of the game and will probably get into some foul trouble. Honestly, I hope a healthy Kaman can be the low post scoring threat this year and that way Griffin can play solid D and collect rebounds and put backs, ec.

Okay so maybe it's not sarcasm
Biggest moron? How? He’s certianly cheap, but not sure how he’s a moron. Al Davis tells his coach which kinds of defenses to play and therefore his senility actual hurts the teams chances of winning. Sterling has his faults, but I’m not sure he’s stupid (at least as it pertains to owning a sports team.)
by Michael White on Aug 27, 2009 4:16 PM PDT up reply actions
Plus, I don’t know how moronic it is to make money hand over fist every year. Aren’t the Clips one of the most profitable teams in the league?
by Eric Stephen on Aug 27, 2009 4:18 PM PDT up reply actions
Yup
And really, at lot of the “Sterling is cheap” jokes could be eliminated by now. He’s paid for Baron, tried to pay for Brand (after re-upping Brand) and resigned Maggette a few years ago.
He does still make money hand over fist, but it’s not quite as cheap as he used to be, though one could argue that the only reason Dunleavy still has a job is because Sterling doesn’t want to have to keep paying him and another coach and another GM.

somehow lost the body of prior comment
I do fault the owner for not trying to win. Consistently year after year they are a mediocre team in a great market. Players come and players go, but when you can not have a consistent winner in the LA market there is something rotten at the top. (See LA Kings)
by MammothDodger on Aug 27, 2009 4:28 PM PDT up reply actions
These are old arguments
They have retained and attracted talent in recent years. And sure, Brand didn’t resign, but who gives a shit, he can take his injury prone body to Philadelpha for all I care…
by Michael White on Aug 27, 2009 4:29 PM PDT up reply actions
old but true
I am not referring to any individual player. and I will agree that they have attracted some talented players recently, but ownership is not allowing management and coaches to mold these into a quality team, (ownership is the only constant through the years). of course this is just an observation maybe even an assumption but 20plus years of history is a guide. I am certainly not a Clipper hater, I am a Laker fan have been my entire sports viewing life, but I would enjoy seeing another Southern California team compete for a title, I just firmly believe that the Clippers cannot be that team until Sterling is no longer at the helm.
by MammothDodger on Aug 27, 2009 4:37 PM PDT up reply actions
Don't really agree
If you look at the team last year, they put together an expensive and talented team. They didn’t execute it. To me that means the burden is either on the player or the coach, but not the owner.
Sterling to me is basically an easy target. But even though the team hasn’t been succesful since 2006, I haven’t had any complaints about ownership….
by Michael White on Aug 27, 2009 4:40 PM PDT up reply actions
2006 to 2009=small sample size
the thing constant since 1981 is sterling in the 28 seasons since his purchase the winning percent is .339. i would be happy if that were James Loney’s BA but it is pretty bad as a won/loss record. I certainly appreciate the loyalty clippers fans have and hope some day to be able to see them face the laker’s in the western finals, but i will not hold my breath.

It seemed a little too over the top, and well, false.
We can go back only to 2006 and see when the Clips had a better team. Not saying they are better, but the “they have suck and always will suck” is just wrong.
by Eric Stephen on Aug 27, 2009 4:20 PM PDT up reply actions
i think he should have gone w/percentages. “They’ve sucked over 90% of the seasons that they’ve been the clippers” or something like that?
C’mon, yes that team was better than the Lakers that year. A one year blip for the Lakers, and, as it turns out, a one year blip for the Clippers as well. Name a NBA team that has been more concistently pathetic in the past 20 years. You can’t.

So a team has been poor for 20 years and we’re not supposed to object to a statement like, “they always will.” You could have said the same thing about the Arizona Cardinals a year ago, or the Tampa Bay Rays, or the Detroit Tigers. I’m going to give both of you some slack because you are not Clipper fans and don’t really have a clue about their history but since you are ignorant of their past maybe you oughta not make any judgments. When it comes to catastrophic injuries to franchise players no one has endured what the Clippers have endured. In between those injuries many bad decisions have been made but if those injuries don’t turn great players into mediocre players or end careers the results would have been different. Yes, Sterling is a terrible man and for the most part a lousy owner but ever since he moved into Staples he’s spent money on the team. The Lakers would love to have the multi million dollar practice facility he just built in Playa Del Rey.
The Clippers are going to the playoffs this year, not just because of Griffin but because of a confluence of events that are working in there favor. Feel free to ridicule the team now, because come next spring these comments will be displayed again. And I’ll take any bets someone wants to throw my way. From Gurnick’s preview of tomorrow’s game:
Billingsley continues to pitch with his tender left hamstring wrapped and continues to say it doesn’t bother him.
Gurnick also shows Matt Maloney as the probable starter on Sat. vs. Charlie Haeger, the Blue Knuckler, not to be confused with the Red Rocker:

I think Eric Stephen had the closest guess on Padilla's start
Eric’s guess: 5.1 IP, 7 hits, 3 ER, 2 BB, 3 K
Actual: 5 IP, 6 hits, 2 runs, 1 walk, 4 strikeouts
No one guessed exactly 5 IP, only mwhite06 guessed 2 runs, a few people had 4 K, no one had 1 BB.
i also had 2 ER My guess was 6 innings 4 hits 5 K’s 2 BB 2 ER

Considering all the 6'2" kids in the LLWS playing first base.
The most athletic kids aren’t playing first base or pitching.
Just popping over from the Row.
I’m sure it’s been said a lot but it bears repeating: You guys have an awesome group over here.
This was an awesome series and well played by both teams. You guys just seem to be our kryptonite, and I resent that, but only a little. I look forward to the matchup in October.
Well said

Mark Sanford, where have you been?
(my apologies, Eric, I can go back to civil baseball discussions now ;-)
Just found out about Miller's performance
Wonderful.
This guy has been an incredible find by Logan. Almost like Lindblom. Easy top 10 prospect.
There's only one explanation for the Rockies losing this series
The Dodgers cheated. Okay, I can’t be like a Giants fan. Here’s to hoping the season’s last three days are meaningful

alright i know you are joking but
the rockies got Every close call this series… it was pretty odd…

I wasn't able to see yesterday's game
though the home plate ump seemed as inconsistent both ways via GameDay as anyone all year. I don’t remember the close calls you might be referring to, but it was certainly a tightly contested series. If you eliminate Fogg, the Rockies actually outscored LA by one in the series. Stupid Fogg

Perhaps you're joking
but why would you eliminate Fogg’s? The Dodgers were forced to turn to Vicente Padilla to pitch. Dodgers hitters got to Fogg, Rockies hitters didn’t get to Padilla….

GREAT GAME
I HATE THOSE DAYS GAMES I CANT GET ANY OF MY WORK DONE IN THE OFFICE ,
Sit Manny down , we need pierre back in the line up ( for the whole game)
think blue!!!!!!!!!!!
Manny was on base 9 times in 14 plate appearances in the series, and he delivered the game-tying hit in the 9th inning Tuesday.
He’s gonna go ahead and stay in the lineup, thanks.
