Just turned on the game… what a shame to see us down 0-4 to Homer Bailey.

You wanna know how great baseball is? The greatest basketball player ever left his sport to play baseball.

You and I both bro...

Oh and the rest of the TBLA familia

by PHAT JULIO on Aug 28, 2009 6:15 PM PDT up reply actions

I blame myself

Because I have paid no attention to the game to this point.

by David Young on Aug 28, 2009 6:15 PM PDT reply actions

Glad to have you hear for the Padma-induced comeback.

by Eric Stephen on Aug 28, 2009 6:16 PM PDT up reply actions

Loney didn’t get a hit there because nobody commented here yet

by Eric Stephen on Aug 28, 2009 6:15 PM PDT reply actions

Loney

your gonna fail. . .why dont you atleast try to get a walk

by SeanMillerSavior on Aug 28, 2009 6:15 PM PDT reply actions

Russ is looking better

by shoothoop on Aug 28, 2009 6:16 PM PDT reply actions

Bailey shouldn’t be breezing through the third time through the order. Maybe we can get him the fourth time through.
vr, Xei

by Xeifrank on Aug 28, 2009 6:16 PM PDT reply actions

I’d like to see his stats on the 5th time though :)

Zooey is my favorite in that picture

by Eric Stephen on Aug 28, 2009 6:18 PM PDT up reply actions

I hope you have good food lined up for your BBQ…take the edge off.

by Eric Stephen on Aug 28, 2009 6:19 PM PDT up reply actions

Ya, I will just try to avoid Dodger talk altogether

actually, unless I’m here, that’s pretty much my motto all the time

by Michael White on Aug 28, 2009 6:21 PM PDT up reply actions

why the fuck is juan swinging on a 3-1 pitch

his job is to get on base… yo have no power to hit it out so wTF??

by matthewmafa on Aug 28, 2009 6:19 PM PDT reply actions

This is sad

and hard to watch.

Im guessing Arroyo is going to destroy us in his start with the way we’ve hit the great Homer Bailey.

Batman is kicking our asses.

by Ivdown on Aug 28, 2009 6:20 PM PDT reply actions

But Bailey is probably a better pitcher than Arroyo

his numbers aren’t better, but his stuff definitely is.

by Michael White on Aug 28, 2009 6:22 PM PDT up reply actions

The point is

Bailey nor Arroyo are good pitchers. This kind of game shouldn’t happen.

by Ivdown on Aug 28, 2009 6:23 PM PDT up reply actions

Look

I’m not saying all hope is lost because of the best outing of the year by a pitcher who’s put up shit numbers.

I’m just saying, on average, this game shouldn’t have happened to the Dodgers. The offense needs to step it up against lesser pitchers.

by Ivdown on Aug 28, 2009 6:27 PM PDT up reply actions

And on average, it has.

by Eric Stephen on Aug 28, 2009 6:34 PM PDT up reply actions

Thats because

Our 1B, SS, and C have all been far, far below average this season.

by Ivdown on Aug 28, 2009 6:36 PM PDT up reply actions

No, I was saying on average, we have beaten up on lesser pitchers.

by Eric Stephen on Aug 28, 2009 6:36 PM PDT up reply actions

Oh ok

Yeah which is why they shouldn’t be shut out with 2 outs in the 8th inning right now.

Honestly, there shouldn’t be much to complain about with the situation the Dodgers have been in this year, 4 games up with a month to play and the best record in the NL. I know this, but what is life without bitching about things? Nice? Probly, yeah.

by Ivdown on Aug 28, 2009 6:38 PM PDT up reply actions

It does happen though. That’s baseball. Jason Schmidt getting a win in 2009 shouldn’t happen either. But it did. Twice.

Its a long season. These games happen.

by Eric Stephen on Aug 28, 2009 6:26 PM PDT up reply actions

loney is a joke

o dog is a joke…

the only real hitters we have on our team is kemp ethier and manny

by matthewmafa on Aug 28, 2009 6:21 PM PDT up reply actions

Hudson

is hitting way better than Loney, Martin, and Furcal right now.

by Ivdown on Aug 28, 2009 6:21 PM PDT up reply actions

all of hudsons average is

frlom the first month or 2 of the season… hes been bad since….

plus thats only cause he hit in front of manny in the first month…. otherwise hes just like loney martin and furcal

by matthewmafa on Aug 28, 2009 6:24 PM PDT up reply actions

I'm incredibly willing to bet

that Hudson has a higher OBP since the start of July than at least 2 of the 3 of Loney, Furcal, and Martin.

by Ivdown on Aug 28, 2009 6:25 PM PDT up reply actions

Oh, I meant OPS

Sorry. But Martin’s OBP is very misleading, because it’s above average and he still sucks incredibly bad on offense this year.

by Ivdown on Aug 28, 2009 6:28 PM PDT up reply actions

I agree to an extent

But what does a high OBP matter when you are slugging low .300s?

by Ivdown on Aug 28, 2009 6:31 PM PDT up reply actions

I do really like his OBP this season

and the defense is better than I expected, but obviously he’s having a terrible season. I think 2010 will be much different for Martin.

by Ivdown on Aug 28, 2009 6:34 PM PDT up reply actions

OPS since July 1:

Hudson .757
Loney .745
Martin .712
Furcal .709

Entering tonight

by Eric Stephen on Aug 28, 2009 6:30 PM PDT up reply actions

well i know he has a higher OBP then furcal

martin he doesnt and loney it might be close….

ive always wanted hudson leading off and furcal in the 8th spot anyways… nobody can we worse then furcal… its just sad

by matthewmafa on Aug 28, 2009 6:28 PM PDT up reply actions

OBP since July 1:

Loney .358
Martin .347
Hudson .346
Furcal .332

Entering tonight

by Eric Stephen on Aug 28, 2009 6:29 PM PDT up reply actions

I meant to say OPS

I figured Martin and Loney would have higher OBPs, but I doubt more than one of Furcal, Martin, or Loney have a higher slugging percentage in that time.

by Ivdown on Aug 28, 2009 6:30 PM PDT up reply actions

Come on now, O-Dog isn’t that bad.

You wanna know how great baseball is? The greatest basketball player ever left his sport to play baseball.

by Jesse S. on Aug 28, 2009 6:22 PM PDT up reply actions

he reached and grounded out on a first pitch fastballl

if you have to reach for a pitch.. you dont swing unless you have 2 strikes…. that was s ad at bat and hes lucky he didnt GIDP

by matthewmafa on Aug 28, 2009 6:23 PM PDT up reply actions

True, he hasn’t been producing fantastically as of late, but 2nd basemen (outside of guys like Utley) like Hudson shouldn’t be held to the same standard as 1st basemen like Loney.

You wanna know how great baseball is? The greatest basketball player ever left his sport to play baseball.

by Jesse S. on Aug 28, 2009 6:26 PM PDT up reply actions

look at the aL EASt 2nd basemen

all 5 of them could be our 5 hitter behind manny and be way better then casey blake

by matthewmafa on Aug 28, 2009 6:27 PM PDT up reply actions

That division is the exception for 2nd basemen. Look at the NL West, or the NL Central (outside of Phillips), or the NL East (besides Utley).

Hey J-MAC

You’re breaking stuff is awesome!

by PHAT JULIO on Aug 28, 2009 6:24 PM PDT reply actions

why does furcal try to bunt to get on base?

yea it worked but this is exactly why hes been doing so bad of late

by shaqfor3 on Aug 28, 2009 6:30 PM PDT reply actions

Entering tonight, he’s 8 for 22 when bunting for a base hit. I’ll take that .364 average, which is higher than his OBP

by Eric Stephen on Aug 28, 2009 6:32 PM PDT up reply actions

I'm shocked its that high.

Again, excellent reminder why you should trust stats not your own observations.

the guy is all fastball

no good offspeed pitches…. i wouldnt be excited at all… anyone can shut down this horrid dodger offense

by matthewmafa on Aug 28, 2009 6:35 PM PDT up reply actions

Agree to disagree then :)

but remember, I was saying I liked him when he was busy getting his ass kicked by the Dodgers the last go around. So, I’m not as shocked as many to see him throw a gem like this.

by Michael White on Aug 28, 2009 6:37 PM PDT up reply actions

alright

i didnt like him then and i see dont noww… you need more then a fastball to be a good starter in the mlb

by matthewmafa on Aug 28, 2009 6:39 PM PDT up reply actions

Wow

3 of those balls in Ethier’s at bat just now were in the same spot as the one he swung and missed on his last at bat with a 3-2 count.

by Ivdown on Aug 28, 2009 6:33 PM PDT reply actions

would have preferred that in his last at bat

but we’ll take it

I'm nobody's fool, least of all yours

by BoulderDodger on Aug 28, 2009 6:33 PM PDT reply actions

2 on no outs, 2 on 1 out

0 runs.

Don’t you just love this offense?

Next inning we’ve got Loney, Martin, Hudson for the 3rd time. I’m going to go puke.

I hate to say this, but go Giants.

by Ivdown on Aug 28, 2009 6:37 PM PDT reply actions

Kemp has been really impatient lately

Here’s a breakdown of walks and strikeout per month

Month PA’s BB’s SO’s
April 92 10 21
May 124 11 29
June 103 7 22
July 104 12 12
Augsut 100 4 28

And that was coming into today’s game.

by Nofatmike on Aug 28, 2009 6:37 PM PDT reply actions

His OBP is down really far in August

from his season OBP. It’s come with more power, though.

by Ivdown on Aug 28, 2009 6:39 PM PDT up reply actions

he doesnt need to walk

when hes crushing the ball… you fail to mention how his slugging percentage is over .600 in the month

by matthewmafa on Aug 28, 2009 6:39 PM PDT up reply actions

Homer Bailey

I have been shaking my head at all the disparaging comments about Bailey here. He was easily the best high school pitcher in America going into the 2004 draft. The Clayton Kershaw of his year and a top 10 draft pick. If he had still been available at #17, Logan White would surely have drafted him instead of Elbert. He is 23 and had great numbers in Triple A this year. Has he had a smooth transition to the majors? No, but that is typical, especially if a young pitcher has to do it in a band box like the Reds’ home park. Bailey is going to be a great MLB pitcher, just not right away.

by Nofatmike on Aug 28, 2009 7:28 PM PDT up reply actions

You know who I would have put in? Joe Torre. He was an MVP once.

We’re in Cincy, they had one of he last players managers in Pete Rose, in fact, Joe Torre used to player-manage as well.

Why, I’m sure Joe was just comping at the bit to bet on this game, and deliever the game winning hit to parley the triple action he had on the Rockies-Giants game, the White Sox-Yankees, and the Reds-Dodgers game.

Anyway, I want fucking Manny in that situation half the time. The other half I want Kemp, and the other half I want Ethier in that situation. We got it, he failed, and maybe next time he won’t. Or he will. But fuck, I want him in that situation if it happens again.
