Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

The Angels traded minor leaguers Alexander Torres and Matthew Sweeney plus a PTBNL to the Rays for Scott Kazmir.

On the one hand the Angels didn't give up much but on the other hand Kazmir hasn't been very good this year (1.82 K/BB ratio, 5.01 tRA) and he's owed over $20 million over the next two years.

Your thoughts?

The Rays know something we don't

Kazmir’s mid-to-upper 80s fastball is probably a huge red flag to them.

He was hitting low 90s in his last two starts.

John Lackey is probably gone as an Angel.

If anything, the Angels know something wrong with Lackey and made a proactive move.

they are getting him outta that AL east

that should lower his era by at least 1 just by not haveing to face the yanks red sox and orioles 4 times a year

My thoughts
  • Brendan Scolari? Brendan Scolari? [scratches head]
  • I wonder if the PTBNL is a list of iffy prospects for the Rays to pick from or someone not yet eligible to be traded. Perhaps a 2009 draft pick, or a current player that didn’t clear waivers, or maybe just a minor leaguer they don’t want to move before the playoffs.
  • How would John Lackey look in Dodger blue? Could he be signed for as little as three years? He’s 31 next year, right?
  • I think I’ve heard of a Brendan Scolari? Or am I confusing him with a Brandon?

Depending in who that third player is, I think it’s good risk for the Angels. Potential coup for them.

I love the deal for the Angels. Two years is not much to take a gamble on with an arm like that. He’s been very very good in Aug and looks like Kazmir of old. I"m a fan of the Rays but this just appears to be a sad salary dump, but I’m glad if they were going to dump him, they dumped him to the Angels.

As far as Lackey goes he’s been one of my favorite pitchers but to me he’s peaked and his 31 – 35 years will probably not be anything special. He needed to be a free agent after the 2007 season.

Great

anytime I’m on a boat I’m a happy camper. The Dolphins were doing their crazy boat running antics. Always amazes me that they can keep up the with the boat for such long distances. If you’ve never seen 10 – 20 Dolphin running under a boat it is a site to behold. Eventually only three keep it going, I think it is there version of the X-Games.

I was one of the first people to think Kazmir would be a nice pickup for LA

He’s got postseason experience, has been the Ray’s ace for the last few years, and he’s got a great K-walk ratio. This season he’s had some problems, but that would mean the Dodgers could’ve gotten him on the cheap.
