9th Inning Rally Thread
Entering the bottom of the 9th, it is tied at two. Clayton Kershaw pitched a hell of a game, with 11 strikeouts in seven innings, but he doesn't get a win to show for it. Kershaw has three double-digit strikeout games this year (and in his career), and has a no decision in all three games.
Casey Blake, James Loney, and Russell Martin are due up.

For mwhite…
I get your point about Sherrill being Wade-like, but he has been really good still. Just not 0.00 good (although that was probably your point).
Ya, that was basically my point
No question that I feel Sherill is >>>> Wade.
Just that like Wade, his stats are starting to get a bit deceptive.

just looked it up
Sherrill’s FIP through last inning is 2.80 with the Dodgers.
by Eric Stephen on Aug 30, 2009 12:39 PM PDT up reply actions
X-FIP is 3.97.
But you are right. These are quite good numbers for the second or third best guy out of the bullpen.

What Orlando does when he hits the first pitch
.456/.475/.754 in 59 PA (he’s been hit twice) Also 3 HRs.
His point is, people only complain about first pitch swings when they are outs
obviously Orlando has hit the first pitch rather well, we should trust him to make that call.

Kershaw was brilliant.
Nice to see someone so young not have to struggle at all with command.
Frustrating series, yesterday excluded. Even if we win here, it’s not the greatest thing to be challenged so completely by a team as bad as the Reds.
They had won 5 in a row
and this park is a little bit of a wild card. IMO, Winning 2 out of 3 on the road is good enough for me (regardless of the opponents record.)

With the exception of Kemp, that is a very weak part of the order. Was not expecting too much.
I don’t think they want to tax his arm by pitching him more than an inning at a time.
by Eric Stephen on Aug 30, 2009 1:24 PM PDT up reply actions
J-Mac
Hopefully we’ll get another inning. Seems stupid of Torre to me. If Kou can’t go two, he needs to bring in Broxton here.
The Reds lineup is full of right handers vs. the Rockies
Where the first 4 hitters McDonald faced was left handers.
This is the heart of their order
If they score now, Broxton does not get a chance to save the game anyway. Using Torre’s own (and good) logic from earlier this year, that prompted some stupidity out of Olney – Broxton should be called in.
Torre's basically saying that somebody needs to give them multiple innings, and that guy is McDonald.
Broxton would be the better answer for one inning. For 2-3-4 innings? Its McDonald.
We all know why Broxton isn’t in, though. Its the save rule.
I’d rather have the guy for multiple innings later, after we have used our best possible reliever to get that far.
by Eric Stephen on Aug 30, 2009 1:31 PM PDT up reply actions
I agree with that, and I have no problem in general with using McDonald. But Broxton is clearly better than McDonald and should be used first, as a general rule, if at all possible.
