Sept Callup Game

Guess the players the Dodgers will call up when we stop playing by the normal baseball rules and let anarchy infringe on the games in Sept:

Possibilities:

Doug Mientkiewicz, Tony Abreu, Jamie HoffmannBlake DeWitt, A.J. Ellis, Chin-lung Hu, Jason Repko, Mitch Jones, Hector Luna(non 40 man)

Eric Stults, Josh Lindblom, Scott Elbert, Cory Wade, Brent Leach, Will Ohman

10 points for each correct pick, - 10 points for each incorrect pick.

My Picks:

Mientkiewicz, Abreu, AJ Ellis, Hoffman, Elbert, Ohman, Wade

Fun game idea

Hoffmann, Eyechart, Ellis, Wade, Leach, Dewitt, Elbert, Stults

by Michael White on Aug 31, 2009 10:43 AM PDT reply actions

One reason the Dodgers got Belliard

I think they will now delay bringing up Dewitt until the Isotope season is over. Ellis is a tough call, they need to move another catcher (maybe May) to AAA because Ellis is doing most if not all the catching and the Isotopes are in the playoffs. Hoffman too might play out the season with the Isotopes.

On Mientkiewicz and Ohman, I thin k the former has a better shot because the Dodgers already have two lefties in the pen, they will add Elbert at some point so the need just isn’t there.

Ultimately (like by the final road trip), I think the Dodgers will have Mientkiewicz, Dewitt, Abreu, Wade, Elbert, Ellis, and Hoffman.

Unfortunate candidate for DFAing, Repko.

I asked Dodger VP of Communications Josh Rawitch about the air quality in LA and whether or not it would affect tonight’s game. Here is his response:

Right now, we don’t foresee any issues with playing the game tonight as scheduled. We have been regularly monitoring the fire, wind, and smoke conditions and have been in touch with Major League Baseball for a contingency plan in the event things change but we do not foresee that happening at this time. We also have proper personnel on hand at the game in the event that any fans need assistance.

In terms of the actual process, the league is the one that makes the call in consultation with the player’s association and the teams

by Eric Stephen on Aug 31, 2009 11:02 AM PDT reply actions

I will be shocked if Ohman is not added

I’m weary about Hoffman or DeWitt. The Dodgers don’t have the biggest clubhouse, that limits the callups.

by meercatjohn on Aug 31, 2009 11:03 AM PDT reply actions

If I remember correctly, Mientkiewicz already has a locker setup. Factoring in all the extra lockers, I believe there are 8-9 empties right now, some of which are used by veterans as extra storage space. I don’t think they would use all of them, but they could get creative for a week or two

by Eric Stephen on Aug 31, 2009 11:05 AM PDT up reply actions

I know this is a, what will the Dodgers do as opposed to what should the Dodgers do, but I really don’t see the point in calling up Ohman. He would be the 3rd (at best) left hander out of the pen and he has no future with the organization. Leach was just as effective anyway, and the added time of seeing Leach against ML hitters is important in terms of evaluating him for next season.

by Michael White on Aug 31, 2009 11:06 AM PDT up reply actions

Yes he is

but his role will be spot starter/long relief. He won’t be a situational lefty (as Stuls won’t either) so I didn’t factor in either of them…

by Michael White on Aug 31, 2009 11:10 AM PDT up reply actions

Yeah, I wouldn’t necessarily add Ohman either, but based on previous reports it sounds as if its pretty much a done deal. I expect Mientkiewicz and Ohman on September 1, and maybe Wade, with the rest scattered over the next week or so.

by Eric Stephen on Aug 31, 2009 11:10 AM PDT up reply actions

Ohman is better then Leach

probably much better when healthy. One guy was pitching in AA at the start of the year and considered a middling prospect, the other has been a solid left hand pitcher in the major for several years. Leach was not very good after his initial success and I doubt he has much of a major league career. He’s been pounded while pitching for the Isotopes (7.82 ERA) while Ohman has given up just one run in his eight rehab appearances.

http://espn.go.com/mlb/powerrankings
This is the reason I hate ESPN.
Damn right our great divisional record has kept us, and the rest of the people ahead of us for that matter, in first place. That’s usually how it works.
Then again, if you add the sum of the best two divisional opponents’ positions, the only comparable teams facing so much competition are the Red Sox and Yankees. That’s it.

Ughh…..

by Talka1ot on Aug 31, 2009 11:13 AM PDT reply actions

Why do you care?

BPRO’s rankings had Dodgers one, and the Yankees two, despite the Dodgers struggles, and the Yankees surge.

Is that more correct?

2d base is becoming mysterious

Castro’s sweet double makes the mystery thicker. Who will be getting late-inning at-bats in the giants series aside from the usual starters? Look like Loretta isn’t going to be seen too frequently. Is Belliard too short to play first?

Kensai lays the smackdown on the Russell Martin-A.J. Ellis speculation.
Ellis is already 28 now and will be 29 next year. If you hate Martin because he can’t hit for power, then you are probably really gonna hate Ellis. The AAA affiliate of the Dodgers in Albuquerque has a park that’s pretty much the minor league version of Coors Field, and Ellis has a .801 OPS with a .054 ISO in it. His MLE for this year is .238/.339/.283/.622, so i’m not exactly thrilled with the thought of him being a regular. Like Martin though, the one thing that Ellis does well offensively is walk, but neither his upside nor current performance is anywhere close to what Russell is doing even now.

Worse yet, all of that doesn’t even touch on the difference in defense. To be honest, it doesn’t even matter what you think about Martin’s defense, because Ellis has never had a positive defensive reputation that i’ve seen. I like him as organizational depth, and maybe even a backup at some point, but a starter? I’ll pass.

I don't think coltrane is that bad

We can’t all be Joe Mauer. a 358 obp isn’t horrible for a catcher, and it could be argued that he’s having a slight down year, perhaps due to the mental exhaustion of so many innings worked with the bullpen.

by stillnotah8er on Aug 31, 2009 11:34 AM PDT up reply actions

I saw you post

that in the comments and felt it was bizarre then. It could simply be a motivating tool by the Dodger front office. At best management might be hoping AJ Ellis can be a backup.

by meercatjohn on Aug 31, 2009 11:38 AM PDT up reply actions

I know. The first question out of everybody’s mouth when told that “some in the organization” think Ellis should start over Martin should be “who said that?” and “make sure to have their exit interviews ready.”

by Eric Stephen on Aug 31, 2009 11:38 AM PDT up reply actions

Nothing slight about his down year

compared to his previous years. He became Jason Kendall overnight without the awesomeness that was Jason Kendall.

by meercatjohn on Aug 31, 2009 11:36 AM PDT up reply actions

Very few complain about Martin’s OBP, and saying they can’t all be Mauer is a strawman argument. It’s the lack of slugging that dissapoint people. And while saying Martin is not Mauer is accurate, it’s also accurate to say Martin is not even Jason Veritek.

by Michael White on Aug 31, 2009 11:38 AM PDT up reply actions

Jason Varitek

.219/.329/.420 for a 89 OPS+

Russell Martin

.259/.358/.324 for a 82 OPS+

Russell Martin is Jason Varitek

Some would incremental OB over the large Slug% gain. But one guy is playing in Boston and the other in Dodger Stadium.

by meercatjohn on Aug 31, 2009 11:42 AM PDT up reply actions

Right.

If Varitek was playing in DS, we’d wonder why the hell we traded Martin for this slug.

by Tripon on Aug 31, 2009 11:43 AM PDT up reply actions

well, defense and pitching is part of the job

I’d say the dodgers runs allowed greatness has had a little to do with Jeanson.

But, true the Martin/Loney combo probably has less dingers at home than almost any catcher/1b combo in mlb history.

by stillnotah8er on Aug 31, 2009 11:41 AM PDT up reply actions

I don’t find Martin’s defense to be anything to write home about. But I’ve been known to get whiny at every passed ball and pretty much always blame the catcher, so I could be a little biased in this regard.

by Michael White on Aug 31, 2009 11:44 AM PDT up reply actions

hard to judge

his gun seems fine. i have no idea what his putout #s are this year.

we’re tied with the gnats for the RA crown @496. That IS something to write home about. I wonder how many teams in the past few years ended August with less than 500 RA. Probably not many, especially in the golden age of roids 6 years ago.

by stillnotah8er on Aug 31, 2009 11:46 AM PDT up reply actions

Kensai's been following the pop time(where the pitcher throws to the catcher to the 2nd baseman to catch somebody stealing, etc.)

And found that Martin started out strong, got into a slump, and then back to throwing well again.

While Ausmus was consistent but slow.

by Tripon on Aug 31, 2009 11:50 AM PDT up reply actions

how important is pop time

if your throws aren’t accurate? I’d think you need a combo of the two to decide how skilled you are in the shutting down the running game.

by meercatjohn on Aug 31, 2009 11:52 AM PDT up reply actions

In a game against colorado in their last series, he threw out 3 almost 4 people trying to steal second. He threw Rolen out yesterday, all were very accurate throws, I think he really worked on his accuracy after the struggles he had a couple weeks ago.

by PHAT JULIO on Aug 31, 2009 11:56 AM PDT up reply actions

Yes his throws last week were

the best I’ve seen this year from him. If you can’t hit, you better damn will contribute in other ways. His numbers on the trip were .278/.278/.278.

by meercatjohn on Aug 31, 2009 11:58 AM PDT up reply actions

But we're also been hearing how better he is defensively this year from Dodgers coaches, etc.

Are some of Chad and Clayton’s Wild pitches Martin’s fault? Sure, but its also because they throw some pitches nobody has any idea they’re going.

by Tripon on Aug 31, 2009 11:55 AM PDT up reply actions

Not like they are going to say

he sucks compared to last year. Do you really think coaches say anything about current players that are not positive?

by meercatjohn on Aug 31, 2009 11:57 AM PDT up reply actions

When they frustate the coaches staff, sure.

Not like anybody can censor what Larry Bowa is going to say.

I do think the coaches comments show that there is an improvement in Martin’s defense though. 2009 just seems its a lost year.

by Tripon on Aug 31, 2009 11:58 AM PDT up reply actions

"Sure, but its also because [Chad and Clayton] throw some pitches nobody has any idea they’re going.

I just don’t agree with this. Martin occasionally looks shocked that a curve ball is going to break in the dirt. Yet he’s the one that called the pitch. You need to be ready for hard breaking balls, and least enough to get in the dirt and try and block it. We’ve all seen the lazy attempts Martin has had recently by trying to back hand these balls….

Wasn't his insult

totally directed at her gender not her race? And I’d expect that 95% of men in baseball feel the same way that Singer does but just don’t get drunk enough in front of the wrong people to get called on it.

From ESPN (via LA Times):

Singer: “What are you doing here?”

Ng: “I’m working.”

Singer: “What are you doing here?”

Ng: “I’m working. I’m the Dodger assistant general manager.”

Singer: “Where are you from?”

Ng: “I was born in Indiana and grew up in New York.”

Singer: “Where are you from?”

Ng: “My family’s from China.”

Singer: Nonsensically mock Chinese, then “What country in China?”

After Ng tried to walk away, Singer kept on insulting her.

by Tripon on Aug 31, 2009 11:44 AM PDT up reply actions

Blaming it on the Atkins diet didn't help either.
Singer made the comments to Dodgers assistant general manager Kim Ng at a hotel bar in Arizona on Tuesday night, prompting Yankees general manager Brian Cashman — Ng’s former boss — to step in, sources familiar with the conversation told the Daily News. The Los Angeles Times also reported that Singer confronted Ng, citing unnamed baseball officials who were present.

After the incident, Singer met privately with Mets general manager Jim Duquette and claimed that he had been on a low-carbohydrate diet, which caused him to suffer a chemical imbalance in conjunction with consuming alcohol, the Daily News reported.

I know it’s probably too late, but another way to have awarded points, as to keep the odds of a tie a little lower is to wait each guess with a confidence level. First pick all the qualified players, then people could give an entry that looks like…

Points / Player (called up Yes or No)
10 / Stults YES
9 / Lindblom NO
8 / Meinkewitzobowski YES
7 / Hoffman YES
6 / DeWitt NO
5/ Ellis YES
4 / Elbert YES
3 / Ohman NO

this gives you more permutations of possible scoring outcomes and a less chance of a tie. Of course there are nothing wrong with ties… unless of course you have an ugly sister.
vr, Xei

by Xeifrank on Aug 31, 2009 1:10 PM PDT up reply actions

I've never "waited" a guess

how does that work?

And of course Sept 1st mean nothing in this contest.

And furthermore there is no prize, so little thought went into the contest.

by meercatjohn on Aug 31, 2009 1:18 PM PDT up reply actions

You give a “confidence” rating to each pick. Kind of like how many weekly football pools work. Say there are 16 football games in a week, you pick the winner of each game, but have to give a “unique” confidence level ranking to each game. You’d likely give the game with the biggest underdog a 16 ranking and the toss ups the lowest ranking. No rankings can be repeated.

So in our case, if you think Stults getting called up is the most likely event, you’d give Stults YES 10 points. All the picks you get “correct” are then added up.

Maybe for a future contest.

DeWitt and Wade ‘cause of last year’s contributions, Stults because of occasionally shocking brilliance, Ellis for backstop relief, Elbert because they want to see what he’s made of, Ohman because he’s good for some laughs- hopefully, not on the mound!
