Dodgers Season In Thirds

I know this is a day late and a dollar short, but Wednesday night's game was the 108th Dodger game of the season, marking the two-thirds point of the season.  I thought it would be a good time to compare the first 54 games of the season to the second set of 54.

Here's an overview of the team numbers:

W-L Runs For Runs Allowed BA/OBP/SLG ERA
Games 1-54 36-18
295 (5.46/gm)
208 (3.85/gm)
.285/.367/.414
3.75
Games 55-108      30-24 244 (4.52/gm) 214 (3.96/gm) .272/.340/.418 3.45

Looks like there was a little more power in the second 54-game stretch, and a little more onbaseability in the first 54 games.

We'll take it position by position after the jump.

Great stuff

1. Who knew Matt Kemp was our most consistent hitter
2. Furcal has replaced the Hudson production
3. The B & B boys (Broxton and Billingsley) were out of synch in the last quarter.
4. Kershaw was Cy Young the last 54 games
5. What a turnaround for Mota
6. If Loney could maintain an .810 OPS for a full season would that make some people happy?
7. Juan Pierre – what can you say but those are terrible numbers for a 4th outfielder.
8. Brad Ausmus – OPS machine
9. Martin – consistent average, OB, lack of power
10. Wolf – most consistent starter

Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen

Brad Ausmus – OPS machine

Thanks for that, Phil. Nothing like starting off my Friday with a good chuckle :-)
Among the everyday players, it is worrying to see how the OPS has dived significantly for Blake and Hudson. Does anyone think they have a chance to rebound in the last third of the season?

Both should be fine. Hudson’s seasonal numbers are right around his projections, and even though Blake had a power outage he still got on base. As long as both are healthy I am fine with either one going forward.

by Eric Stephen on Aug 7, 2009 9:27 AM PDT up reply actions

I'm a little more bearish on thes two than Eric

particularly because neither of these guys are really young, so I’m afraid their numbers will continue to be pedestrian throughout the rest of the season. Blake was not terribly effective last season after the trade and Hudson is a guy who has trouble staying healthy. I agree that these guys now are producing at around historical levels and most realized that Hudson’s start was unsustainable anyway. I’m not especially worried about either but I don’t think they need to be in the starting lineups every single day. With Abreu getting called up, hopefully he gives these guys more rest.

"Onbaseability". I like the sound of that word.

I have a question (which may be dumb, but I’ll ask anyway).

I see the ERA is lower in the second half yet the runs allowed is higher. Is this due to unearned runs?

by Dr. Geek on Aug 7, 2009 8:12 AM PDT reply actions

Yes, there have been a ton of unearned runs in the last 54 games compared to the first 54

by Eric Stephen on Aug 7, 2009 8:13 AM PDT up reply actions

1st 54 games: 7 unearned runs
2nd 54 games: 22 unearned runs

Also, thanks to more losses and some extra inning games, there have been more innings:

2nd half g: 509.1 IP

Nice post Eric. It would be interesting to see the BABIP for the hitters as part of the data. The Dodgers had an incredibly high BABIP the first half of the season. I’d like to see how far it has regressed to the mean for many of the Dodger hitters.

Very, very soon Torre will have this bullpen at his disposal:

Broxton rhp
Sherrill lhp
Troncoso rhp
Belisario rhp
Kuo lhp
Mota rhp

Plus Weaver as the long man. So many options. So awesome.

If you think about it, if you found a decent closer, this bullpen might not be half bad either:

Can't wait for the 40-man roster...

Will give our main bull-pen pitchers extra relief, get to see Lindblom, Elbert, Garate, others to pitch… Exciting!

by PHAT JULIO on Aug 7, 2009 9:59 AM PDT reply actions

I don’t anticipate Garate will be called up. Elbert, McDonald, Leach, yes. Lindblom, Sclichting, probably. But I don’t think they will bring up a ton of pitchers.

by Eric Stephen on Aug 7, 2009 10:05 AM PDT up reply actions

Lindblom will have to be added to the 40 man

which I’m guessing would be done after a Schmidt DFA/60 day DL transaction.

Also, I can’t see Wade not being called up. It would likely be viewed as a smack in the face to Wade (if he wasn’t called) and we know Torre is a loyal guy. So I think the Dodgers will swap Schlichting and Wade.

I would call up Garate. His LOOGY credentials look great in AA, but seeing what he can do against major leaguers would be a nice baseline.

Players I would call up when rosters expand (assuming the Dyland Hernandez transaction goes through as we expect in the next few days)

Pitchers:
Elbert
McDonald
Garate
Leach
Lindblom

Position Players:
DeWitt
Eyechart
Hoffmann

I doubt it, at least this season. Maybe in the offseason.

by Eric Stephen on Aug 7, 2009 10:28 AM PDT up reply actions

He could pass through waviers.

In a bullpen loaded like this. He’s the short man.

by Tripon on Aug 7, 2009 10:39 AM PDT up reply actions

Lots of people pass through waivers. But that doesn’t mean he will be traded. It is highly unlikely during this season at least.

by Eric Stephen on Aug 7, 2009 10:42 AM PDT up reply actions

Why would the Dodgers put Lindblom on the 40-man

Right now. Unless Troncoso gets hurt or Beliasario isn’t right, there is no place for him and in September, he would be behind Mota, McDonald and maybe Wade too.

They are better off waiting until next spring to see if he will compete for a job then.

by bhsportsguy on Aug 7, 2009 11:20 AM PDT up reply actions

I'd answer that with, "why not"

If you DFA Schmidt, you would have an open spot on the 40 man (even assuming Eyechart takes the current vacancy.) The team seems to think Lindblom can contribute sooner than later. Being behind the guys you mentioned is irrelevant for 40-man purposes. Unless there is somebody else not currently on the 40-man who the Dodgers think can contribute sooner, I don’t see why Lindblom wouldn’t be the logical fit.

by Michael White on Aug 7, 2009 11:23 AM PDT up reply actions

I can see that, especially that I forgot about Wade.

by PHAT JULIO on Aug 7, 2009 10:13 AM PDT reply actions

Adding Lindblom on 8/31

would make him postseason eligible, and they would NOT use up an option for the remainder of the season. Win-win situation.

by silverwidow on Aug 7, 2009 11:30 AM PDT reply actions

I’d go so far as to say its a rare win-win-win!

by Eric Stephen on Aug 7, 2009 11:37 AM PDT up reply actions

If you aren’t on the 40-man you don’t waste an option by being in the minors. MLB doesn’t count the expanded roster period when determining options.

by Eric Stephen on Aug 7, 2009 11:42 AM PDT up reply actions

In other words, Lindblom just needs to be on the 25-man roster (or DL) once he is on the 40-man roster, for any period BEFORE September 1. In this case, the only day that would matter is August 31, and he would be considered on the active roster for 100% of the time he was on the 40-man (all of one day).

by Eric Stephen on Aug 7, 2009 11:45 AM PDT up reply actions

Really?

I did not know that. McDonald was on the 25 man roster last year before 9/1?

by Michael White on Aug 7, 2009 11:49 AM PDT up reply actions

He wasn't

I think Eric meant he has to be on the 40-man roster by 8/31.

by silverwidow on Aug 7, 2009 11:50 AM PDT up reply actions

I meant for purposes of option status.

In Lindblom’s case, since he isn’t already on the 40-man, he needs to be added on 8/31. But, in order to not burn an option, Lindblom will concurrently need to be placed on the 25-man roster, but really only for one day.

by Eric Stephen on Aug 7, 2009 11:53 AM PDT up reply actions

I guess I wasn’t too clear…to sum up:

To be active for the postseason: Lindblom on 40-man by 8/31

To not use up and option year AND be active for postseason: Lindblom on 25-man on 8/31

by Eric Stephen on Aug 7, 2009 11:56 AM PDT up reply actions

Ah, okay.

For 40 man roster spots, we should be looking at

- Jason Repko
- Jesus A. Castillo
- Jason Schimdt.

I think those are the 3 most likely 40 man roster spots to be exchanged for Lindblom.

Repko, and Schimdt are good candidates to get DFAed, while Castillo seems might be a guy who mysteriously get 60 day DLed.

by Tripon on Aug 7, 2009 11:50 AM PDT up reply actions

There is still the open spot, that doesn’t look to be occupied by Mientkiewicz for a while anyway. He may be activated on 9.1 if he can pinch hit, but a lot can happen between now and then.

by Eric Stephen on Aug 7, 2009 11:54 AM PDT up reply actions

Who would Lindblom replace on the pitching staff

Assuming no one gets hurt, you have a bullpen of Broxton, Sherrill, Troncoso, Beliasario, Kuo, Mota, and Weaver. Plus you already know what McDonald, Elbert, and Wade can do. Now, if you are saying you don’t need a 5th starter (whomever it is) and you don’t need a long man in Weaver (though I think you do need someone who can throw mutliple innings), my guess is that McDonald certainly fills one of those roles and I am guessing that Weaver stays on the roster anyway.

Now, if Belasario can’t make it back, then you could see something but I think the way the bullpen has performed and especially with the addition of Sherrill and now Kuo looking like he can go on back to back days, I just don’t think they will add Lindblom now, if only to save the 40 man roster spots for players like Trayvon Robinson, Scott Van Slyke, Alberto Bastardo and Javy Guerra who will need to put on the 40 man roster to avoid Rule 5 issues. Lindblom doesn’t need to added now for that reason so I think they will wait.

I can see BH’s point though. Lindblom is behind at least Elbert and Wade in the pecking order, so you’d need two injuries for the Lindblom move to payoff, whereas the cost would be a 40-man spot a year ahead of time, which could bite them in November.

That's migiated by several veterans leaving the team.

I doubt Castro, Eyechart, Schimdt, etc. are going to be on the team next year.

Can you definitively say he is behind Wade for post-season forster purposes?

James McDonald had never been on a major league mound before the rosters expanded last year and he impressed Torre. As a result, come post-season roster time JMac was in and Troncoso (who had spent most of the year in the majors) was out. If Lindblom impresses, he certainly has a chance to be on the postseason roster ahead of Wade or Elbert.

How about this

Dodgers purchase Lindblom’s contract on 8/31
Option Lindblom to AAA on 8/31
Re-call Lindblom on 9/1

The option is nullified because it only lasted one day. Am I correct.

by silverwidow on Aug 7, 2009 12:25 PM PDT reply actions

No, he's immediately optioned.

The 25-man roster is not affected on 8/31.

On 9/1, the active roster expands to 40 and he can easily be brought up.

By optioning him on 8/31, an option year would be used this yet.

Yet = year

Ok

So the rule about needing to spend 20 days on assignment doesn’t work, because the minor league season ends on Labor Day. Got it.

I realize that the movement to get Aberu on the team is so they can have him for Oct.

Okay, use Eyechart’s 40 man roster spot for Lindblom, option Aberu on Aug 31. Call up Linblom.

Call up Aberu on Sept. 1.

I just remembered the 10 day rule

I think Abreu would be ineligible for re-call until September 8 (day after Labor Day).
