Elbert starting Sunday
didn’t see that one coming. Pleasantly surprised though.
BTW, Torre clearly hates Stults.
T.S.
The “T.S.” stands for “Totally Super.”
Anyone know how many times the Dodgers have been walked-off against this year?

Elbert
I can’t tell you how nervous I am going to be when Elbert is pitching on Sunday. A first MLB start can be a disaster even for the very best pitching prospects, and my fear is that if Elbert lays an egg Torre is never going to trust him as a starter again
the good thing is he is facing a lineup filled with left handed batters.
he does well against leftys but not that well vs rightys
my hope is that he limits his walks
if he can do that he should have a decent 5 inning outing
by SeanMillerSavior on Aug 7, 2009 7:10 PM PDT up reply actions
will elbert only start on sunday
or will he continue to be the fifth starter… or we do not have that info yet
It's probably the former for now
I can’t imagine Torre is married to the idea of Elbert as the fifth starter at this point

1 pitch 1 out
Good start.

7 pitches in the first inning.
All strikes. Looking good.

In case anyone is interested, I updated the payroll worksheet with today’s roster moves. I hope I didn’t jinx Hudson by assuming he would get 4 plate appearances tonight.
Being careful with Ethier tonight.
"The right to swing my fist ends where the other man's nose begins." -Oliver W. Holmes
Ethier, in the 9th inning or later this season, is hitting .366/.500/.683 with 4 doubles, 3 homers, 8 runs, and 13 RBI in 52 PA.
Has Ethier hit a walk-off in every walk-off situation possible?
"The right to swing my fist ends where the other man's nose begins." -Oliver W. Holmes
He is saying every situation where Ethier could have hit a walk off; did he?
by Michael White on Aug 7, 2009 7:25 PM PDT up reply actions
What I mean is has he come through with a walk-off hit in every at-bat that he’s had the chance to deliver a walk off?
"The right to swing my fist ends where the other man's nose begins." -Oliver W. Holmes
See my answer below
on Monday he was a HBP
by Michael White on Aug 7, 2009 7:27 PM PDT up reply actions
Actually the answer is clearly no
He got hit by pitch by Hoffman which he could have hit a homerun and it would have been a walk off.
by Michael White on Aug 7, 2009 7:26 PM PDT up reply actions
Yeah I figured he hadn’t capitalized on all of them… just wondering how many chances he’s had to walk-off this season.
"The right to swing my fist ends where the other man's nose begins." -Oliver W. Holmes
Ethier non walkoffs
Apr 15: tied 4-4, IBB with 1st & 3rd, 2 outs (obviously out of his hands)
May 10: tied 4-4, lineout with 2 outs
May 18: tied 2-2, groundout with 1st & 3rd, 2 outs
June 6: tied 2-2 in the 10th, single with 0 outs, man on 1st (Ethier walkoff HR in the 12th)
June 29: tied 2-2 in the 9th, leadoff double, tied 2-2, K with 2nd & 3rd, 2 outs (later walkoff HR in 13th)
July 25: tied 3-3, walk with 1st & 2nd, 2 outs
Monday: down 5-6, HBP to load bases, 2 outs
You're the man.
That’s a lot more chances than I remembered.
"The right to swing my fist ends where the other man's nose begins." -Oliver W. Holmes
Totally did not see the Elbert thing happening
How many innings could they possibly expect from him after sitting the in bullpen the last few weeks?
Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen
The silver lining to that inning:
Jurrjens threw 28 pitches.

Nice.
Another 1-pitch out.
"The right to swing my fist ends where the other man's nose begins." -Oliver W. Holmes
I guess Atlanta really doesn't want to strike out as much against Billingsley
oh well, rolling over the first pitch works fine for me
Laroche must still be in Pirate mode.
Note on the same page as the rest of the Braves.

It worked
the guy just didn’t swing. Did that curve look any different then the ones Atlanta was busy chasing all night last Sunday?
by Michael White on Aug 7, 2009 7:39 PM PDT up reply actions
Curve balls that don't work work are hangers
pitches that dive work—- it just requires batters to swing at them obviously
by Michael White on Aug 7, 2009 7:40 PM PDT up reply actions
I still don't get why not
Didn’t Martin call the damn pitch? Shouldn’t he be ready for the ball to freaking curve? Why does he have no chance if it drops early?
by Michael White on Aug 7, 2009 7:42 PM PDT up reply actions
Man!
I hate when they go from 1st to 2nd on a wild pitch/passed ball and then score immediately thereafter. Come on!

To defend Loney a little bit
Hudson called for the ball. And then turned his head when Loney tossed it to him
No don't. Throw fast balls down the middle!
Jesus Christ. Martin is a major league catcher. They are supposed to be able to block balls in the dirt
by Michael White on Aug 7, 2009 7:57 PM PDT up reply actions
You bitch when Martin can't block every breaking ball in the dirt.
That ball sinks way before it meets the plate.
These are good hitters
you can’t just eliminate one of your better pitches. It’s better to try and beat them and hope for the best with Martin; then to just throw fastball because you’re nervous about your catcher.
by Michael White on Aug 7, 2009 8:00 PM PDT up reply actions
Except his fastball is one of his better pitches too.
And I’m not asking him to just throw it down the middle, I’m asking him to mix it up with the breaking balls.
Great play by the O Dog
Loney your a bonehead

no that was a terrible flip by loney
by SeanMillerSavior on Aug 7, 2009 7:59 PM PDT up reply actions
I couldn't see both angles at the same time
so I don’t know if Hudson turned his head while Loney flipped it or not. Not really why he was calling for the ball with his head turned though….
by Michael White on Aug 7, 2009 8:01 PM PDT up reply actions
Its an easy field for Hudson (by bending down with an outstretched glove) if he didn’t completely turn his head after calling for it.
Ya, it was weird looking
he had his glove out asking for it, with his head completely turned.

I think Manny comes back next year.
I doubt he’ll find a city of fans that will welcome him into the fold like Dodger fans have.
Dear James Loney.
Why do you have an inability to hit right handed pitching, when you are a left handed batter?
Oddity, from Braves beat writer Mark Bowman:
Russel Martin’s nine steals match the team-high total Nate McLouth has recorded in 53 games w/ the Braves.
the good news is that if we lose, espn won't tell anyone
Red Sox and Yankees are scoreless going into the 12th. That’s going to take the full hour of coverage on sportscenter

"The right to swing my fist ends where the other man's nose begins." -Oliver W. Holmes
Oh man,
If they can capitalize here and get Jurrjens out of the game before the fifth is over, the Atlanta bullpen is vulnerable in the middle of games and we can really take a large lead with Bills dealing.
From what I saw last night
I’d say their bullpen is vulnerable at the end of games too :)

I was going to mention that,
but I think the numbers would say the weaker portion is clearly in the middle. That soriano guy isn’t too bad, but apparently, neither is Ethier…

"The right to swing my fist ends where the other man's nose begins." -Oliver W. Holmes
Hudson hit past the pitchers right up the middle.
The problem was that it was hit so slowly that the 2nd baseman had ample time to just step on 2nd, and throw to first.
I was thinking about him Sunday night, sipping Brandy from a snifter, smiling contently in the bottom of the 5th :)
I thought about him too...

I"ll go ahed and assume
Ethier in disgust would strike out. THrow ’em out strike ’em out delayed double play!
