Dwight Stones throwing out the first pitch!!! Good lord, he’s been around for ever.

He has aged much, much better than fellow 1976 Olympian Bruce Jenner though.

Elbert starting Sunday

didn’t see that one coming. Pleasantly surprised though.

BTW, Torre clearly hates Stults.

Elbert

I can’t tell you how nervous I am going to be when Elbert is pitching on Sunday. A first MLB start can be a disaster even for the very best pitching prospects, and my fear is that if Elbert lays an egg Torre is never going to trust him as a starter again

by CanuckDodger on Aug 7, 2009 7:08 PM PDT reply actions

my hope is that he limits his walks

if he can do that he should have a decent 5 inning outing

by SeanMillerSavior on Aug 7, 2009 7:10 PM PDT up reply actions

will elbert only start on sunday

or will he continue to be the fifth starter… or we do not have that info yet

by matthewmafa on Aug 7, 2009 7:09 PM PDT reply actions

Don’t know yet…there is an off day Thursday though, so Elbert’s spot could be easily skipped

by Eric Stephen on Aug 7, 2009 7:11 PM PDT up reply actions

It's probably the former for now

I can’t imagine Torre is married to the idea of Elbert as the fifth starter at this point

There have been a few where he hasn’t.

Actually the answer is clearly no

He got hit by pitch by Hoffman which he could have hit a homerun and it would have been a walk off.

Yeah I figured he hadn’t capitalized on all of them… just wondering how many chances he’s had to walk-off this season.

June 29: tied 2-2 in the 9th, leadoff double, tied 2-2, K with 2nd & 3rd, 2 outs (later walkoff HR in 13th)

Jesus Christ. Martin is a major league catcher. They are supposed to be able to block balls in the dirt

by Michael White on Aug 7, 2009 7:57 PM PDT up reply actions

These are good hitters

you can’t just eliminate one of your better pitches. It’s better to try and beat them and hope for the best with Martin; then to just throw fastball because you’re nervous about your catcher.

Oh BTW, little known fact: most likely that shirt Vin is wearing is short-sleeved.

This is probably my favorite text message ever…from BHSportsGuy:

Jermaine Jackson is here and he brought his glove and caught a foul ball behind the Dodger dugout.

mlbbowmanAfter he was pulled , Jurrjens yelled in Cooper’s direction and the plate umpire tossed him too.10 minutes ago from web

by Tripon on Aug 7, 2009 8:57 PM PDT reply actions

Dumb move by Jurrjens, but heat of battle and all, its understandable…I’m sure there is some sort of fine for getting ejection…probably $500 – $1,000

by Eric Stephen on Aug 7, 2009 8:59 PM PDT up reply actions

Well at least he didn’t touch a stranger in the Alps.

by Nofatmike on Aug 7, 2009 9:02 PM PDT up reply actions

Excellent!

Now this thread has a Naked Gun and a Major League reference!

by Eric Stephen on Aug 7, 2009 9:02 PM PDT up reply actions

Sheesh. Tough strike zone...

but I can’t complain about the ump tonight :)

by Michael White on Aug 7, 2009 9:00 PM PDT reply actions

Even though that was a ball, I liked that pitch…Bills went away the whole AB, then came in…just a bit too far.

by Eric Stephen on Aug 7, 2009 9:00 PM PDT reply actions

You know, Yunel Esobar scares me more than McCann does.

He has the ability to get one of those dinky little hits.

by Tripon on Aug 7, 2009 9:01 PM PDT reply actions

Billingsley extinguishes the 6th

and the crisis that was the lead off hit has been averted!

by Michael White on Aug 7, 2009 9:02 PM PDT reply actions

78 through 6

TWO more. :)

by Eric Stephen on Aug 7, 2009 9:02 PM PDT reply actions

Nice pitch

I hope we can see Sherrill in the 7th

by SeanMillerSavior on Aug 7, 2009 9:02 PM PDT reply actions

That would be a big no…Bills is fine…78 pitches through 6, and he has 7-8-9 coming up

by Eric Stephen on Aug 7, 2009 9:03 PM PDT up reply actions

Bills behind every batter

i didnt realize he was at 78 pitches. . . but id prefer we trust our pen

by SeanMillerSavior on Aug 7, 2009 9:05 PM PDT up reply actions

Yanks and Sox in the 14th

On a per inning basis, some of tonight’s tickets were actually reasonably priced.

Well shit, now Chad’s out

by Eric Stephen on Aug 7, 2009 9:09 PM PDT reply actions

Hamstring tighten up again?

by shoothoop on Aug 7, 2009 9:10 PM PDT reply actions

Seemed like it. That or Chad farted something fierce and couldn’t stand to be out there for 6 more minutes.

by Eric Stephen on Aug 7, 2009 9:11 PM PDT up reply actions

pulled the hammy picking up the rosin bag

The plus side is a player is actively telling the truth about being hurt.

by Eric Stephen on Aug 7, 2009 9:10 PM PDT reply actions

more silver linings

you’re jinxing powers are strong. use them for good.

by insomniacslounge on Aug 7, 2009 9:11 PM PDT up reply actions

I’m sure the stabbing pain in his legs occurred right as I typed “over/under”

by Eric Stephen on Aug 7, 2009 9:12 PM PDT up reply actions

But the downside is having your pitcher hit the DL with a month and a half left in the season.

by Nofatmike on Aug 7, 2009 9:11 PM PDT up reply actions

I missed it

What happened to Chad exacly?

by silverwidow on Aug 7, 2009 9:11 PM PDT reply actions

He went to the mound, bent over to get the rosin bag and straightened up immediately. He then took one warm up pitch and immediately headed to the dugout

by insomniacslounge on Aug 7, 2009 9:13 PM PDT up reply actions

Wow, I just saw the replay

Is this the same problem as last week?

by silverwidow on Aug 7, 2009 9:14 PM PDT up reply actions

BHSportsGuy just said Chad looked like he was limping leaving the field from being on the bases in the bottom of the 6th

by Eric Stephen on Aug 7, 2009 9:16 PM PDT up reply actions

I don’t think so. Sunday was a right leg cramp

Tonight is a mild left hamstring strain.

Strained Awesomeness

by Eric Stephen on Aug 7, 2009 9:13 PM PDT up reply actions

Does it count as irony that Kuo comes in to replace an injured pitcher?

by Eric Stephen on Aug 7, 2009 9:11 PM PDT reply actions

Listening to the ABQ postgame right now…no mention of a reason for Haeger getting relieved…he pitched only 4 innings, allowing 1 run and threw just 61 pitches. Not sure of any alternate motive

by Eric Stephen on Aug 7, 2009 9:15 PM PDT reply actions

Check the ABQ blog to see if anyone was speculating on how many pitches Haeger would throw in the 6th

by insomniacslounge on Aug 7, 2009 9:16 PM PDT up reply actions

I did…the notes were playing up his string of complete games recently :)

by Eric Stephen on Aug 7, 2009 9:16 PM PDT up reply actions

I have to guess Stults will get the call for Wednesday

Four lefties + Kuroda in the rotation for the time being.

by silverwidow on Aug 7, 2009 9:18 PM PDT reply actions

I had Vin turned down for a second, but BH texted me that it was just a mild left hamstring strain. Lots of time between now and Wednesday

by Eric Stephen on Aug 7, 2009 9:19 PM PDT up reply actions

BISON !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

by Eric Stephen on Aug 7, 2009 9:20 PM PDT reply actions

The results don't look right

does something about his mechanics not look right to you? I haven’t noticed anything…

by Michael White on Aug 7, 2009 9:20 PM PDT up reply actions

He doesn't look "not right"

But his stuff doesn’t look as electric as usual. As we come to expect from Kuo—probably just not a good idea to pitch him on back to back days.

by Jacob Burch on Aug 7, 2009 9:21 PM PDT up reply actions

Agreed

or as Bluetrek said, he was definitely rushed in getting warmed up

by Michael White on Aug 7, 2009 9:22 PM PDT up reply actions

Might have been he just didn’t take enough time to warm up.

by shoothoop on Aug 7, 2009 9:22 PM PDT up reply actions

Didn’t see Bluetrek’s comment, oops.
