Sherrill should pitch
by SeanMillerSavior on Aug 7, 2009 9:31 PM PDT up reply actions
Yeah, I don’t think there is any question Sherrill will start the 8th…8 pitches, and 2 LHB to start the inning. Bank on it.
this just in
George Sherrill was just attacked by a seagull in the dugout and has gone to the trainer’s room

Sunday is going to be so awesome
It’s like Kershaw’s debut all over again.
Ok, maybe not quite that cool. But still, fun I’m sure.
I wish the McCourts will stop this crap.

Furcal got thrown out stealing on a 3-1 pitch called a strike. Only the ump reversed his call, making it 2 on, 0 out. Blake eventually hit a 3-run jack.

This weekend might be the first time ever the Dodgers have started a first-round draft pick in three straight games.
They had four straight games with just a draftee starting earlier in the year (with Stults and J-Mac) but not all were 1st rounders.

web gem for kemp
that is if ESPN knows about the other teams in the league besides the yankees and red sox
Do you have to record an out to get a hold?
If you enter a game w/ your team up two, give up a solo shot and then get yanked, do you still get credit for a hold?
by insomniacslounge on Aug 7, 2009 10:00 PM PDT reply actions
Yep…official rule:
If a reliever comes into a game to protect a lead, gets at least one out and leaves without giving up that lead, he gets a hold. But you can’t get a save and a hold at the same time

Broxton is a horrible defensive pitcher against runners
He may be one of the worst defensive closers in baseball. His pitch selection is often really stupid, as well. But he’s also the most physically talented pitcher in the league.

You don’t see that every day.
So...
…why did Torre rush Kuo, a guy who is known for having trouble just to stick to his pre-assigned 7-8-9, and why did he make Sherrill go longer than he’s ever gone this season? wtf
Braves are full of Lefty bats which is why Sherrill pitched longer
by SeanMillerSavior on Aug 7, 2009 10:28 PM PDT up reply actions
I realize that, and
it looks like he was tiring because he HAD to let him face lefties.
omg handedness matchups!
by Chad Moriyama on Aug 7, 2009 10:30 PM PDT up reply actions
take a look at Sherrills splits
and youll see why he pitched to all those lefties
by SeanMillerSavior on Aug 7, 2009 10:31 PM PDT up reply actions
I know what they are
i’m saying extending somebody who was a 1 inning closer just because you have more lefties up is dumb as hell
by Chad Moriyama on Aug 7, 2009 10:32 PM PDT up reply actions
So that makes it okay?
If he makes him go 3 innings and doesn’t die, it makes it okay? I don’t only criticize when things don’t work.
by Chad Moriyama on Aug 7, 2009 10:29 PM PDT up reply actions
no that's not what makes it ok
what makes it ok is that he faced all lefties but 1, and only gave up a groundball hit and a bloop double.
i’d put Sherrill through that part of the lineup every time. it’s why we got him
by bucknellbruin on Aug 7, 2009 10:30 PM PDT up reply actions
That's what i mean though
he just kept extending him and extending him because of handedness matchups
by Chad Moriyama on Aug 7, 2009 10:33 PM PDT up reply actions
but we got him to face lefties
and his stuff was still good. now if guys were mashing him then i’d agree. but giving up baserunners doesn’t make him ineffective. he gave up 2 soft hits; he was still making good pitches
by bucknellbruin on Aug 7, 2009 10:35 PM PDT up reply actions
So since the Phillies have like 8 lefties at times
He should just continue pitching like 2 1/3 innings because of matchups? Seems risky.
by Chad Moriyama on Aug 7, 2009 10:36 PM PDT up reply actions
well obviously at a certain point no
but i just don’t think he reached that point this game
by bucknellbruin on Aug 7, 2009 10:37 PM PDT up reply actions
I will say this was just about the limit I would have thrown Sherrill…he ended up at 31 pitches…he has thrown 25 or more 7 times all year…I didn’t think tonight was that far out of line.
by Eric Stephen on Aug 7, 2009 10:39 PM PDT up reply actions
yeah i think he was done if he didn't get Johnson out
by bucknellbruin on Aug 7, 2009 10:40 PM PDT up reply actions

torre is going to kill him before the playoffs even start
by Chad Moriyama on Aug 7, 2009 10:41 PM PDT up reply actions
The weird thing about Kuo is that because of the injury he could have thrown as many warmup pitches as he wanted. I have to assume Kuo said he was fine and ready.
by Eric Stephen on Aug 7, 2009 10:29 PM PDT up reply actions
You guys are looking too much into this.
We’re in this position now because, like Eric mentioned above, Broxton walked McClouth, then let him steal 2nd, then gave up a single to GA.

Is letting JB pitch at all. He’s hurt, and it is afffecting his location.
by stillnotah8er on Aug 7, 2009 10:33 PM PDT up reply actions
What the fuck are you talking about
the pitch to Anderson was located fine. It was a ground ball that found a hole. Shit happens.
The walk to Mclouth included two balls that were iffy. He wasn’t pulling a Kuo and throwing the ball out of the bullpen.

by Eric Stephen on Aug 7, 2009 10:44 PM PDT up reply actions
wins show character
I understand why someone would prefer opp obp, whip, etc. I prefer wins and consecutive appearances with saves from my closers.
by stillnotah8er on Aug 7, 2009 10:46 PM PDT up reply actions
closers should not be getting many wins....
again…quoting mwhite here…do you even watch baseball?
by bucknellbruin on Aug 7, 2009 10:47 PM PDT up reply actions
Okay, this seems fundamental
but a closer comes into the game when their team already has the lead. Therefore, the only way for a closer to get the win, would be to blow the save and then hope the team comes in after him and wins the game.
Therefore, closers who get a lot of wins, are doing their best job of failing.
by Michael White on Aug 7, 2009 10:48 PM PDT up reply actions
although the closer could come in
in a tie game in the top of the 9th/10th then win when his team walks off
which is why Brox has 7 wins. but why you would judge a closer on that is beyond me…
by bucknellbruin on Aug 7, 2009 10:49 PM PDT up reply actions
I acknowledge that wins are a strange artifact
And that truly awesome closers can be 1-3, it means next to nothing.
I just have seen 4 JB meltdowns in the past month – including the one in San Diego. I just think people see the speed and get stars in their eyes when it comes to JB.
I would hate to see him be a postseason albatross because he’s hurt.

Sorry to come in late, and I love the big guy, but....
…how hard is it to look at a f’ing runner every now and then? McClouth stole, and 85 year old Garrett Anderson had 2nd stolen before the foul out. But again, that would require a pitching coach to actually coach and a catcher who actually paid attention to defense and perhaps reminds the dipshit relievers that THERE IS A F’ING RUNNER on 1st base.
FUCK!
i think you’ll find that there are a lot of closers who stink at holding on runners.

They can only do so much really
They don’t really have pickoff moves
Broxton’s best pickoff move is stepping off the rubber really fast and holding the ball threateningly
