The first wave of September callups were announced today, as Scott Elbert, A.J. Ellis, and Jason Repko were recalled from Triple A Albuqerque.

The Repko news is a bit shocking, as I frankly expected him to be a prime candidate to be designated for assignment to make room for the new Dodgers on the 40-man roster. This is the first time Repko has seen with the big club this season.

ridiculous on Repko, plus at this point I’d rather see Elbert pitching in the AAA playoffs then sitting in the bullpen and never ever seeing the mound unless we are up or down by five runs.

Yes, he was on the 40-man on August 31

by Eric Stephen on Sep 1, 2009 12:35 PM PDT up reply actions

Its really just “in the organization” on August 31, as Thome and Garland won’t be added to the 40-man until today anyway.

by Eric Stephen on Sep 1, 2009 12:37 PM PDT up reply actions

1 bad start in cincinatti and he gets dfa'd wow.

if only he had gone another 7 innings 0 ER… then we’d have abreu still and haegar would still be oour 5th starter…

by matthewmafa on Sep 1, 2009 12:40 PM PDT up reply actions

I expected him to be DFA’d with Repko. Not cool, though, indeed.

by Eric Stephen on Sep 1, 2009 12:41 PM PDT up reply actions

Uh, I don't know.

I think we need to make room for Eyechart, Garland, Thome, and Ohman.

4 then?

by Tripon on Sep 1, 2009 12:46 PM PDT up reply actions

Abreu is still on the 40-man roster, until he clears wiavers.

by Eric Stephen on Sep 1, 2009 12:47 PM PDT up reply actions

Likely 3.

One for Thome
One for Garland
One for one of Mientkiewicz/Ohman

If Abreu clears waivers (or at least to AZ’s spot) he can get traded by tomorrow or Wednesday (depending on which day he was on waivers…it takes 48 hours), and that will create the 4th spot needed

by Eric Stephen on Sep 1, 2009 12:46 PM PDT up reply actions

so who are other candidates?

Haegar, Brent Leach, Travis Shlichting, Stults, Repko,

by matthewmafa on Sep 1, 2009 12:48 PM PDT up reply actions

Shlicthing can be put on the 60 day DL

Don’t know if he hurts his status for the AFL though.

by Tripon on Sep 1, 2009 12:48 PM PDT up reply actions

They wouldn’t have recalled Repko today if they were going to DFA him.

by Eric Stephen on Sep 1, 2009 12:48 PM PDT up reply actions

Maybe

Ned could be doing Repko a favor. By bringing him up and putting him on the roster for one day he gets benefits for the year. They don’t need to activate Garland until Thursday. Just a thought.

If Minky is not going to be on the playoff roster, then little need to bring him up for Sept. I don’t think he even gets the call. They can bring up Ohman when Abreu finally gets moved. So maybe only two spots for Thome/Garland.

by meercatjohn on Sep 1, 2009 12:52 PM PDT up reply actions

Then again

I don’t know why I’m worried about Haeger. If they are going to pull the plug on him after three starts in 2009 they are not going to give him another shot in 2010. Might as well release him and let him catch on with someone else who doesn’t make decisions based on two innings over three starts.

by meercatjohn on Sep 1, 2009 12:56 PM PDT up reply actions

wtf REPKO?

briing up hoffman he is Much better

by matthewmafa on Sep 1, 2009 12:33 PM PDT reply actions

The Dodgers probably want Hoffmann to play in the Triple-A post season for experience.

No such need for Repko. Since his ass is going to be DFA in the off season.

by Tripon on Sep 1, 2009 12:37 PM PDT up reply actions

Me too. Almost (but not quite) as shocked as I was when I received a text last night notifying me of Thome’s new destination.

by Eric Stephen on Sep 1, 2009 12:40 PM PDT up reply actions

Also, its looking more and more likely the Dodgers will face the Phillies as the first round

barring an upset of either the Rockies or Giants losing the wild card.

Since the Dodgers and Cards are battling for first place in the NL, while the Phillies are 3 games behind in the win column behind the Dodgers.

In which case, I’m happy, as the Phillies might do something dumb and start J.A. Happ 2nd, as while his ERA is 2.63, his K/9 is only at 6.1, and his FIP is 4.27, and his x-FIP is at 5.14. Dude’s just waiting to blow up in somebody’s face. Might as well be the Dodgers.

by Tripon on Sep 1, 2009 12:41 PM PDT reply actions

yeah

hamels has gone 16 innings this yeare against us allowing 1 run and Lee has been almost lights out since hes been here and he has hamels are almost the same pitcher….

also they have the BEST hitting in the NL

by matthewmafa on Sep 1, 2009 12:46 PM PDT up reply actions

The Phillies’ offense is suseptible to LHP, and we have that in spades. They are a beatable team

by Eric Stephen on Sep 1, 2009 12:48 PM PDT up reply actions

X-FIP of 5.14

nice. That’s a delta of ERA to X-FIP of a Washburn type level.

The Hardball Times likes the moves Colletti did.

http://www.hardballtimes.com/main/blog_article/grudgingly-giving-dodgers-gm-ned-coletti-credit-for-belliard-thome-garland/

With all these moves, Colletti has shown an ability to acquire quality players without compromising their payroll structure. This is especially crucial in this economy. It is also how Colletti made his living last year, acquiring Manny Ramirez and Casey Blake at zero cost other than prospects. Just over a year later, it’s looking like Coletti blundered badly by coughing up catcher Carlos Santana for Blake (assuming Santana pans out as expected). That said, Blake has proven extremely productive in his role as a third baseman and Russell Martin certainly has the catcher position locked up for years to come. The cost for Manny Ramirez was Andy LaRoche and Bryan Morris, which isn’t costing Ned any sleep at night.

60 Day DL

Anyone who is on 60 day DL on August 31 can be playoff eligible, so anyone currently on the that list can always be added later. Repko could still be DFA’d in a week or three. Let’s see if he performs underpressureatbigleaguelevel first, then CYA.

by joshburke2 on Sep 1, 2009 1:04 PM PDT reply actions

yeah

I’m curious how he does as a pinch runner because that is about the only time he will be used.

by meercatjohn on Sep 1, 2009 1:06 PM PDT up reply actions

Someone still has to go

for Thome-nator to be on the roster, though….who might that be?

by joshburke2 on Sep 1, 2009 1:09 PM PDT up reply actions

infield of 2011 (God willing)

Dewitt(3rd), Furcal(SS), DeJesus(2nd base), Loney(1st base), Hu(Utility infield)

I need your guess for the August tiebreaker. You can just put in in the fan post comments. I already received shaqfor3’s guess via email.

On the postgame show last night

They showed Mitch Poole stiching #21 to Garland’s new jersey. That was Abreu’s number this year.

by silverwidow on Sep 1, 2009 1:07 PM PDT up reply actions

Oh that's right

I must be drunk or something, not sure why I forgot that it was Abreu.

by Brendan Scolari on Sep 1, 2009 1:09 PM PDT up reply actions

I know everything points to Abreu being traded

but I would figure that either the Padres or Nationals would claim him on waivers I mean why not, he’s cheap with a big upside

by spike238e on Sep 1, 2009 1:16 PM PDT up reply actions

that’s why he’s a PTBNL…if he’s claimed, they just pull him back and deal him in the offseason.

by Eric Stephen on Sep 1, 2009 1:18 PM PDT up reply actions

Just to note, Abreu's MLE for his triple-A season projects to

  0.274/0.302/0.453

I don’t think we’d be happy if he did that on a full time basis as a Dodger.

by Tripon on Sep 1, 2009 1:28 PM PDT reply actions

That’s better than Jimmy Rollins. :)

by Eric Stephen on Sep 1, 2009 1:29 PM PDT up reply actions

You wouldnt' be happy with a

.750 OPS from a 2nd baseman making 360,000 a year? Hudson’s is at .782. Just asking

by meercatjohn on Sep 1, 2009 1:39 PM PDT up reply actions

I think the MLE is still high.

No way Aberu slugs that high for instance, and his line at Triple-A shows that he still doesn’t walk much. Unless he has Vlad, or Sandoval’s like strike zone, pitchers would just throw him 4 balls to swing at.

Keith Law
The Dodgers’ pickup of Jim Thome might be partly due to GM Ned Colletti’s known fetish for grizzled veterans, but Thome does have value to L.A. as an option off the bench. His bat speed has slowed and he’s futile against left-handed pitchers, but he hits right-handers reasonably well and can crush a mistake from any pitcher, as his raw power is still present because of his size and strength. Although first baseman James Loney is suffering through his second straight disappointing year, Thome hasn’t played first base in more than 24 months, and is so slow afoot that he’d likely be the worst defensive first baseman in the majors if the Dodgers asked him to try it, so that doesn’t appear to be an option.

The Dodgers don’t have to carry Thome on their postseason roster, but if they do, it should be at the expense of a 12th pitcher, as today’s overstuffed bullpens mean you have to get as much value and flexibility as possible from your limited number of bench spots. The White Sox could use the open DH spot to give catching prospect Tyler Flowers a few big league at-bats; he’s rough behind the plate, but still playable there, and a cup of coffee in which Flowers gets to face major league pitching without the extra wear and tear of catching is a great opportunity.

Garland

Los Angeles’ acquisition of Jon Garland makes a little more sense. Garland is chronically overrated and somehow acquired the “ground-ball pitcher” tag despite never actually being a ground-ball pitcher, but he does do two things well: throw strikes and take the ball every fifth day. The back of the Dodgers’ rotation has been an open sore all year, and Chad Billingsley and Hiroki Kuroda have both missed time with injuries, so adding Garland also gives the Dodgers the opportunity to back off on the workloads of those two starters if at some point they have six healthy starters on the roster (including Randy Wolf, Vicente Padilla and their de facto ace, Clayton Kershaw). Garland wouldn’t make the Dodgers’ postseason rotation barring an injury, but again, there’s sufficient chance that either Billingsley or Kuroda won’t be able to pitch in October, and having a better backup option than the erratic Padilla is good planning.

Just did a search on the Sept Call Up Game

and not one of us expected Repko to get the call up. Not sure what the plan is for him but it just seemed odd that no one had him coming up.

by MammothDodger on Sep 1, 2009 2:44 PM PDT reply actions

It really was out of the blue.

by Eric Stephen on Sep 1, 2009 2:49 PM PDT up reply actions

The decision to call up Repko is very surprising

With Manny suspended, the Dodgers called up 3 outfielders during the 50 games; Paul, Hoffmann and Jones. Jones isn’t on the 40 man and Paul is on the 60 day DL, so neither of them were expeceted to get a call up. Hoffmann is available, and I thought the fact that he was called up this year indicated Repko had been dropped on the organizational depth chart (behind Paul, Hoffmann and Jones.) Tripon made a good point above, Repko can sit on the bench with the big club while Hoffmann can continue to get work in the AAA playoffs—- perhaps a point we all missed. Though with the waiver deals of Padilla, Beliard, Thome and Garland I figured Repko would surely be a DFA candidate.

by Michael White on Sep 1, 2009 2:52 PM PDT up reply actions

Repko was hurt during that time though, and that’s why he got passed over. Bad luck for him.

by Eric Stephen on Sep 1, 2009 2:54 PM PDT up reply actions

I wish baseball allowed that, the pinch-runner on homers.

by Eric Stephen on Sep 1, 2009 3:02 PM PDT up reply actions

Gosh, thanks for reminding me of that

I don’t remember that at all. I must have completely missed that….
