Around SBN: Indy 500: 'Greatest Spectacle In Racing' Set For Sunday

Jamie Hoffmann, the first player I ever interviewed while covering the Dodgers, has been designated for assignment. No other corresponding move has been made, but this is presumably to open up a spot on the 40-man roster for Jim Thome, in time for tonight's game.

Okay-I'm more then impressed, never would have expected it. You should write for True Blue
New DFA predictions

My guess: Ohman and Eyechart DO NOT get activated tonight.

Garland and Thome = Haeger & Hoffmann DFA

There, I said it.

Its not for Lindblom though :)

Or Withrow

have you noticed

that Ned has not traded a prospect starting pitcher since Edwin Jackson/Chuck Tiffany in his first deal. Or am I missing someone? Meloan doesn’t count because he was relief pitcher masquerading as a relief pitcher.

by meercatjohn on Sep 1, 2009 3:45 PM PDT up reply actions

He's traded plenty

they just haven’t amounted to much (like Bryan Morris).

by silverwidow on Sep 1, 2009 3:47 PM PDT up reply actions

maybe they think FA hitters are less risky than FA pitchers, so they can just develop their own pitching, and sign hitters? Just a thought. I don’t know.

too bad andruw jones

or juan pierre havent worked out…. along with furcal..

by matthewmafa on Sep 1, 2009 3:48 PM PDT up reply actions

I would have no problem

letting Hoffman go if we didn’t have Repko. Just seems strange they are both journeyman outfielders whose ceilings are fourth outfielders at best but I did think Hoffman was better then Repko and had options headed into next year.

by meercatjohn on Sep 1, 2009 3:50 PM PDT up reply actions

hoffman is 24

he can still improve. hes is still learning baseball….. repko is repko

by matthewmafa on Sep 1, 2009 3:51 PM PDT up reply actions

Its an odd move to be sure

by Eric Stephen on Sep 1, 2009 3:54 PM PDT up reply actions

How can you DFA Hoffman and keep Repko? Are you the kiss of death? Is Schlichting next?

by meercatjohn on Sep 1, 2009 3:42 PM PDT reply actions

lol

ya that really does seem odd

William Doolittle at your service, a.k.a. will do.

this is really mind boggling….

by matthewmafa on Sep 1, 2009 3:45 PM PDT reply actions

Hoffman was going to be Ethiers platoon parter next year

hoffman crushes leftys…

so for garland.. we have given up tony abreu and jaime hoffman

by matthewmafa on Sep 1, 2009 3:47 PM PDT reply actions

To make it more palatable

lets call it Hoffman and filler for Thome

by meercatjohn on Sep 1, 2009 3:48 PM PDT up reply actions

I would count this for Thome if you want to get technical.

by Eric Stephen on Sep 1, 2009 3:48 PM PDT up reply actions

He goes on release waivers. After 10 days, they can trade or release him. They might be able to be able to outright him to the minors.

Maybe that’s the play, that they accept the risk that nobody would claim him.

by Eric Stephen on Sep 1, 2009 3:56 PM PDT up reply actions

so if someone claims him

we give him to them for nothing? or we can work out a trade? and recieve something?

by matthewmafa on Sep 1, 2009 3:58 PM PDT up reply actions

We can work out a trade

by Eric Stephen on Sep 1, 2009 3:59 PM PDT up reply actions

The RedSox seem to like our castoffs. Maybe they will pick him up.

by meercatjohn on Sep 1, 2009 3:51 PM PDT reply actions

Natali Feliz

after striking out the side tonight has pitched 17 innings and given up only 5 hits while striking out 22. Not a bad first month. With 2005 top 10 draft pick Thomas Diamond being released today it is good for them they have other arms in the arsenal. They could have a nice one two punch with Feliz and Holland going forward if Feliz can be just as dominant as a starter as he is a reliever. Or he could end up being mediocre Jobo.

by meercatjohn on Sep 1, 2009 4:25 PM PDT reply actions

yeah

i doubt he could average 98 staarting like he is relieving… but he is even more dominant then joba was when he was a reliever so far…

Some thoughts on these moves

The issue could be, I don’t know if offman was a lock to remain on the 40-man after this season. Repko is probably going to be released as opposed to non-tendered (since those contracts come up after the Rule 5 draft). But the Dodgers already have 4 MLB outfielders (assume Manny takes the 2nd year), they like Paul (who was ahead of both Repko and Hoffman) and they have two young outfielders in Robinson and maybe Van Slyke that need to be protected.

If you are going to remove Hoffman from the 40-man at the end of the year anyway why not DFA now and see if you can get him to sign a minor league deal for next year. I can see wanting to use Repko in September since he already has been through this in 2006.

I don’t know if Abreu will clear waivers which at least mean the Dodgers won’t have to face him this year.

The good thing about Elbert coming up, you better hope both the Nationals and D-Back deals are completed before the end of the year since a PTBNL cannot appear in MLB after the trade is made. Actually, by calling him up, Elbert might already be DQ from being part of any of those deals.

I still think they need to something today because by game time Garland needs to be on the roster. I would be thinking that Charlie Haegar will get his red card today.

With Elbert joining Sherrill and Kuo, I can just taste that large Diet Coke that Eric will buy me in October. (The adding of Thome and Garland also makes those roster spots even more precious.)

At least Doug got his year’s credit of service time to secure his health care benefits from MLBPA.

Belliard joining the team and Abreu’s pending departure still make it unlikely that the Dodgers will call up Dewitt and/or Hu before the AAA season is done.

I still think its possible that Cory Wade could be the PBTNL in the Belliard deal.

by bhsportsguy on Sep 1, 2009 4:30 PM PDT reply actions

I never really thought about Wade as part of the Belliard deal…good call

by Eric Stephen on Sep 1, 2009 4:34 PM PDT up reply actions

You ramble long enough something might just come out halfway intelligent

Cory Wade has been passed over a few times when the Dodgers had a shot to call him up, the big key will be to see if he gets called up at all this month since I doubt he would clear waivers. Oh, wait, the Nationals can just claim him, since they are first.

They might have worked out a deal to let Wade pitch some more in AAA. But he could still be dealt and face the Dodgers in DC.

carlos carrasco

one of the main guys traded from the phillies to the indians for cliff lee is making his debut today…

so far: 1 inning 6 hits 4 ER 1 Walk 1 K 2 Home runs allowed

Joe Torre said that Jim Thome was expected to arrive tomorrow.

Also, Jon Garland is starting Thursday, and Torre mentioned Haeger would be in the bullpen on the pregame show.

abreu and hoffman

nethier are playing for alberqurque right now… so it looks like abreu is probably traded and hoffman is dfa’d… wow

by matthewmafa on Sep 1, 2009 6:03 PM PDT reply actions

God damn -

The Giants Offense without Pablo and Freddy is essentially a AAA lineup.
Hamels is really giving it to them right now, only one hit all game.

by Talka1ot on Sep 1, 2009 6:08 PM PDT reply actions

Actually, this line-up also lacks Molina and Shierholtz

And contains Winn and Whiteside, even with Winn hitting worse than Andre against lefties.
That’s really one of the worst line-ups I’ve seen used all season.
Their only four major league players (maybe Garko and Valez can constitute MLB players on occasion) are all out resting of with an injury.
