Gould Debut - Dodger Prospect Performances and Minor League Box Scores - Sep 3rd, 2009
Highly touted 2009 draft pick Garrett Gould made a surprising trip to the mound last night for Ogden and pitched one hitless inning in his professional debut. I lost that bet as I did not expect Gould to pitch this year.
Brian Ruggiano has his 19 game hitting streak snapped and he did it in grand style with four k's. During the 19 game run he had 39 hits in 91 at bats, launching himself ontop of the Pioneer League in Batting Average and OB%.
Jon Michael Redding won his minor league leading 16th game going against ex Dodger prospect Michael Watt. Redding won the game even though it was not much of an effort compared to his last few stellar performances.
Our Inland Empire team was no hit last night by a non descript Giant prospect called Mixon. Our own Kenley Jansen pitched two scoreless innings giving him eight straight appearances without allowing an earned run. Not bad for a guy who just transitioned from catcher to pitcher in August of this year.
Jesus Castillo was removed from the 40 man but was not claimed so he is back pitching with the Lookouts. Instead of starting he relieved last night.
Chin Lung Hu with another three hits as he tries to get his average above .300 for the 1st time this year.

Tell me how crazy this idea is
If you called up Hu and let him play 2nd base occasionally, would his increased range be sufficient enough to compensate for Thome’s lack of range at first base?
So the formula would be something like:
[Hu’s defense – O-Dog’s defense + Thome’s bat – Loney’s bat]
-————————————————————————————————————————-
[O-Dog’s bat – Hu’s bat + Loney’s defense – Thome’s defense]
and just hope that formula would equal more than 1.00. If Thome felt healthy or comfortable enough to play 1B, I think they would play him there for a few games here and there, just to keep his bat fresh.
Ya that formula's about right
Really it was just a, “I’d like to see Thome play” so I was trying to figure out a way to minimize his defensive ineptitudes.

Range is probably a problem with Thome
but I think his back is the biggest obstacle. From his intereviews it doesn’t sound like he can actually play the game of baseball and if he wasn’t able to sit for two hours he’d be retired.
Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen
Yeah
His back tightens up or something.

Carlos Frias looks like the pitcher who replaced Gould on the mound after Gould left.
Looks like he was just promoted to Odgen, and in 4.1 innings he pitched has a 2.89 FIP, and a K/9 rate of 8.31
For the season, in 62.7 innings, his FIP is 3.29, and his K/9 rate this year is 9.62

Frias birthday is in Nov, so he’s not even 20 yet.
Chris Withrow made it 8th this week on BA’s hot prospects list.
“Team: Double-A Chattanooga (Southern)
Age: 20
Why He’s Here: 1-0, 0.00, 5 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 8 SO
The Scoop: After missing almost all of 2008 with elbow problems, just getting through a full season healthy would’ve been a step in the right direction for Withrow. He’s done more than that, reaching Double-A at only 20 years old. He struck out 105 in 86 innings at high Class A Inland Empire before being promoted to Chattanooga at the end of July. He’s gone 2-2, 3.95 in 27 innings since. Tuesday’s start in Jacksonville was Withrow’s best since reaching Double-A. Other than giving up a double to the opposing pitcher, Elih Villanueva, Withrow was nearly flawless for five innings, and his eight strikeouts were the most of his six Double-A starts.”

Haven’t heard anything about waivers yet. Probably depends on when they placed him on waivers (they don’t technically have to until September 8, seven days after the DFA)
In your opinion, was Abreu claimed?
That’s the only possible reason I can think of for why he’s not a D-Back.

That sucks.
It must be shocking for Hoffmann, a Dodgers player all his life, doing whatever the coaches tell him to do, been moving up the system since he was drafted. And its still not good enough for the Dodgers.
