Pirate larceny, tough times for Old Friends

Delwyn Young is now mired in a 6/52 slump after going 0 for 5 yesterday. Since being given the 2nd base job, D Young has done nothing to prove he can handle the job. While everyone worried about his defense he has put up a .602 OPS while playing 2nd base.  He could be Jose Lind defensively but those numbers won't get it done.

Andy LaRoche has been the incumbent 3rd baseman all year for the Pirates but given his production he will have a hard time holding off Walker next year.  A 3rd baseman with an OPS of .692 is not going to get many more chances.  At 26 years old he doesn't even have the "he's still young" argument going for him anymore.  At least in the first half he was semi productive with .737 OPS but since the all star game he has a dismal OPS of .605.

Bryan Morris is struggling at the age of 22 in a High A league. Hard to believe this guy was a Logan White number one pick. What a whiff. Probably the surgery had everything to do with this miss but hey the guy had surgery just several months into his professional career.

So the Pirates may want to stay away from the Dodgers. Considering that LaRoche/Morris were the prize catches in they Bay/Manny deal along with the dreck the Red Sox threw in, it looks like they came up with a bucket of nothing for one heck of a left fielder.

One other note, Victor Garate was bumped for AA to the major leagues when he was acquired in the Belliard deal. His debut looked like any other National pitcher line as he gave up two runs in one inning of work. Included in those two runs was a home run to one Brett Hayes and if you have heard of Brett Hayes you up one on me.

great title!

Anyone who’s disappointed with Martin or Loney should take a look at LaRoche’s numbers. Talk about not living up to the hype! I almost feel bad for the Pirates. Almost. Mostly, I just feel joy that the Dodgers got away with such a steal.

Do you suppose that the Dodgers just got lucky, or that they would have parted with Loney, or even Ethier or Kemp, had the Pirates pushed the issue? It sounds insane now, but not as crazy as Manny Ramirez for Andy LaRoche and Bryan Morris, or even Jason Bay for Andy LaRoche and Bryan Morris…
