Opening Day Roster Game - What is your best guess?
Here are my locks for the roster as of January 21, 2010.
Locks
Pitchers: (9)
Jonathon Broxton
Vincente Padilla
Catcher: (1)
Infield: (5)
Outfield: (3)
That's 18 players that can look forward to a chilly Opening Day in Pittsburgh.
Probables:
Pitchers:
Eric Stults (First shot at 5th spot due to being out of options).
James McDonald (Long man role)
Infield:
Nick Green
Outfield:
Unlikely:
Pitchers:
Scott Elbert (5th starter)
Josh Limblom (5th starter)
Outfield:
Xavier Paul (Not Ned's MO to bring a young player to sit on the bench)
Now, there are 7 spots out of 25 left, the Dodgers have 3 open spots on left on their 40-man roster, those will probably be filled by at least another pitcher (NRI), catcher and back up infielder. Another question, will the Dodgers carry 13 pitchers to start the season.

When a player is out of options, does that mean he can’t be sent down to the minors at any point during the season w/o his approval (ie – rehab)?
vr, Xei
I've been wondering that myself
I’ve seen a whole bunch of posts saying how Stults is “out of options”. At first, I thought it was a figure of speech, but I’ve seen it enough now to think it may have some sort of official meaning…
When a player is “out of options”, he cannot be sent back to the minors without clearing waivers first. A rehab assignment wouldn’t be subject to this issue. Essentially, if one of Stults or Haeger doesn’t make the 25-man roster coming out of spring training, he would have to the DFAed before he could be sent to the minors. (Look for Haeger to hit the DL at the end of ST with a fingernail problem.)

That's assuming the Dodgers don't need his roster spot
If one of the NRI or bench players need the spot, he would be my pick to be DFAed during ST.

Right now the Dodgers have 37 spots on the 40-man roster filled. One of the remaining spots is probably Eye Chart’s to lose. Berroa/Green might get one. The backup signing Ned alluded to on the radio recently could be a backup catcher. If/when the Yankees offer back rule-5 draftee Jamie Hoffmann, there’d have to be a spot open for him. Of course, fellow rule-5ers Monasterios and Zerpa come off the 40-man if they are offered back to their teams. Still, looks like the roster is pretty tight, which means Brian Barton has got his work cut out for him.
The commenter formerly known as El Lay Dave.
18 Down
19 – AJ Ellis
20 – Berroa over Green, not sure Green will be ready, Torre comfortable with Berroa
21 – Brian Barton over Repko
22 – Stults
23 – McDonald
24 – Minky
25 – One of the rule five guys
Brian Barton over Repko is a pretty bold pick
but it’d be nice to have a local guy like that on the big league team- and with quite an interesting background!
Just as good a chance
that Repko accidentally hurts Barton or someone, though.

I see Ellis as the backup catcher.
I think that Stults get’s traded or sold and either Haegar or Elbert are the 5th starters.

hagar
does he make it through waivers? theres no way after those 2 dominating starts that a team wont pick him up right
He has to stay on the 25-man roster
If he is claimed on waivers. My hunch is that he would clear waivers and become a free agent, then he could sign a split contract.

I thought it was the 40-man, not the 25-, but if I was right, Eric would have corrected you already, so I must be wrong.
The commenter formerly known as El Lay Dave.
If he’s on the 40-man but not on the 25-man roster, they would have to use an option on him. But since he is out of options (2006-2008 used) to remove him from the 25-man means removing him from the 40-man too.
by Eric Stephen on Jan 22, 2010 1:29 PM PST up reply actions
I understand the Dodger’s position. What I am unclear of is the claiming team’s position? You are saying that the claiming team has to put Haeger on the 25-man because he is out of options? I can see that being right.
If he clears waivers, the Dodgers can outright him to the minors because he’s never been outrighted before and he’s not a 5-year MLB man – do I have that right?
The commenter formerly known as El Lay Dave.
The claiming team would be in the same boat as the Dodgers.
But if he does clear waivers, you are right; he can be outrighted once.
by Eric Stephen on Jan 22, 2010 1:41 PM PST up reply actions
Haeger might not clear waivers, but I don’t think any team cares much about those two starts. They were very good, but it’s worth noting that Haeger was also lucky (.158 BABIP in those two starts), and that he got shelled in Cincinnati.
If anything, teams will note that he performed well in a strong hitters environment in Albuquerque for almost a full season if they were to claim him.
My guess is that he’s 50/50 to clear waivers
by Eric Stephen on Jan 22, 2010 8:14 AM PST up reply actions
I think Haeger if Haeger clears waivers, it'll be for one reason.
He throws a knuckleball.
For whatever reason, that’s seen as a junk pitch, a trick pitch.
Hey, I think that’s dumb, but it sure seems like knuckleballers aren’t valued just cause they’re knuckleballers.

My guesses
19 – Mientkiewicz (1 roster spot)
20 – Repko
21 – Green (1 roster spot)
22 – Ausmus decides not to retire (+1 roster spot)
23 – McDonald in the pen
24 – Monasterios as the long man
25 – Stults as 5th starter to begin the season, on a short leash
Zerpa gets sent back to Boston (-1 roster spot)
agree
with these qualifications
ellis for ausmus (if ausmus is not asked back and/or if he has a terrible spring)
maybe haeger for monasterios if they don’t want to chance losing haeger on waivers (in case stults chokes on his short leash:)
otherwise elbert would seem to be next in line for 5th starter and i’m not convinced joe is even ready to go there
all this assumes that russ ortiz is just a gambit to mess with us
and, not for nothin but I think our projected bench is BAD with a capital BAD

Gary Mathews Jr. "" Mets
I guess we will have to see who is better between Brian Stokes and Ely/Link

Very interesting how the paths of Mathews and Pierre have been so similar since that fateful offseason when they both signed ridiculous contracts.

plus
I think we also need to consider the quality of what the Angels got in return. One would think (and not just because we’re Dodger fans) that Ely/Link are better returns than Stokes, because we KNOW, for all his problems, Pierre was still better for the Dodgers than Matthews Jr. was for the Angels…
Thought this was odd phrasing
Tim Brown’s preview of the D-Backs is fine, but the caption on Yahoo’s MLB front page is stupid:
Arizona’s young stars, like Mark Reynolds (L) and Chris Young, haven’t matured (yet) but the D-backs show promise
Reynolds hit .260/.349/.543 last season, a 123 OPS+. I think he’s matured just fine.
Man if you can't hit
89 home runs in three years and not be considered mature what are the expectations? Actually they simply needed to change out Reynolds for Upton.
From a Phillies blogger
and Baseball Info Solutions video scout reported this:
Local radio out of MIN says Twins and Joe Mauer are discussing a 10-year deal. That sound is the collective breaking of Yankee hearts
Shane Victorino’s contract with the Phillies bought out one year of FA:
2010: $5m
2011: $7.5m
2012: $9.5m
He made $3.125m last year. That seems like a pretty good deal for the Phillies.
So
He basically gave them the discount that Rowand wouldn’t. I wonder if the Phillies would have signed Rowand to a smaller contract, and I wonder if Rowand wishes he had stayed if that were possible.
by robotmadeofnails on Jan 22, 2010 10:36 AM PST up reply actions
I bet the Phillies
are glad Rowand didn’t stay! More often than not, signing someone coming off of a career year to a big, multi-year deal doesn’t work out so well.
Don't see this everyday
From Jon Paul Morosi of Fox Sports:
Outfielder Grant Desme, one of the Oakland A’s top prospects, has decided to retire from baseball in order to pursue the priesthood, multiple sources told FOXSports.com.
An A’s official confirmed Desme’s decision this morning, saying the 23-year-old is "serious" about the big career change.
Desme was ranked 8th in Oakland’s system by Baseball America

Colletti said that he was working on possibly bringing in another player for the bench. Any idea who that might be? I think we will see a bat added, which probably knocks out Minky.
Mora is pretty much locked into 3B; he hasn’t played significant time at any other position since 2003 (three innings at 2B, and two at short in the past six years).
by Eric Stephen on Jan 22, 2010 10:54 AM PST up reply actions
That is the problem with Mora
if he was still the versatile player he was once he’d have some value but strictly as a 3rd baseman I don’t quite see the fit.
by meercatjohn on Jan 22, 2010 10:56 AM PST up reply actions
has a rep as a headcase
with an inflated sense of his own abilities, based on one or two decent seasons about 9 years ago
and would cost way too much for what his role would be here
no thanks
by lchristmas on Jan 22, 2010 10:55 AM PST via mobile up reply actions
In his career, he’s played every position but catcher (even one game at 1b!). If Ned signed him, he could tout his versatility no end. I’m not saying I want him; just saying it could happen.
But
as Eric pointed out that versatility was long ago and is no longer part of his skill set.
by meercatjohn on Jan 22, 2010 10:59 AM PST up reply actions
Fair enough--No Mora froma me
I just want a versatile RH utility player with some pop. Who’s out there?
Gomes? Garko?
Just throwing those names out there. Not sure it’s actually of interest. Gomes is bad at defense, of course but I like his bat. If they bring back Minky then Garko wouldn’t make much sense…

I thought about it, but the bullpen is already very strong 5 deep as it is (unless they try Troncoso as a starter) and there are just so many options that it would be hard for on of the NRIs to make the club.
by Eric Stephen on Jan 22, 2010 10:30 AM PST up reply actions
Broxton/Sherrill/Beli/Kuo/Troncoso is a superb core bullpen. Add in McDonald and Stults/Haeger [long man] and we’re already up to 7. Even with big springs, it’s going to be easy for us to start the year with Elbert & Lindblom in AAA. I just wonder if Lindblom will be groomed as a starter or reliever. As for the NRIs, I think one [at most] could sneak onto the team if he’s lights out. With our luck on these types of guys, I’m almost expecting it. Could we survive with a 4-man bench? Catcher/Carroll/OF/Super Utilityman who can play SS. Maybe.
Not with a
an old LF and an old 3rd baseman, and a SS with a questionable back. JMO

If would have helped
if Carroll could play SS but he can’t. Felipe Lopez is a guy who can play everywhere and would have been very useful.

Starter. He’s a dark horse, but I feel Joe will pick him for the 5th spot when all is said and done.

I'd have him playing
3rd base everyday in AAA waiting for Casey to get hurt. Ned may be saying it, but I don’t think they are as ready to give DeWitt the 2nd base job in 2010 as they were in 2009. I’m like the ESPN guy who Eric keeps getting pissed off at, I simply won’t believe it until I see DeWitt playing 2nd base on opening day.
by meercatjohn on Jan 22, 2010 11:07 AM PST up reply actions

it is either TBD or DeWitt because if it is Carroll, I’m going to pine for Abreu more then what is healthy.

I just can't see Ned spending more than like $1 - $2 MM on another utility/bench guy
and I’m guessing Tejada will end up getting more than $2MM
