Around SBN: Win or Lose, Boston Celtics' New Big 3 Era A Success

Over on SB Nation Los Angeles, I wrote about the playoff greatness of Cliff Lee, and how it reminds me of the greatness of Orel Hershiser.

Anytime I can tie something to the 1988 Dodgers, I'm all in.

Does Orel Hershiser deserve to have his number retired by the Dodgers? Some would argue that if Hershiser gets his number retired that Fernando should too, but I don’t think that’s true. Hershiser almost put up 3 seasons of 7 WAR and Fernando never touched 6. They played on many of the same Dodgers teams, so they were essentially playing in a vacuum, where all things outside of themselves are equal. I know Fernando threw a no hitter, and that he had far more fanfare than Orel, but I don’t think you have to compare the two.

While I think both deserve to have their numbers retired for their contributions to the history and legacy of the franchise, I believe it’s time to retire Orel’s number.

Plus, if we retire 55, we could have an interesting game of which number Martin will choose.

I am probably more on the side of wanting to retire Orel’s number, but I do kind of like the unwritten rule of waiting until a player makes the HOF.

Totally agree

But at the same time, there are those who have contributed to the franchise for a long time (Orel and Fernando come to mind) who will never make the hall of fame. I suppose they don’t need their numbers retired for them to be remembered, but it’d be nice for new fans to know that they were special despite playing for a couple great teams and more not-so-great teams.

Isn’t there a Dodgers Hall of Fame they could be elected to? What about retiring the numbers of those who make the Baseball HOF and listing the names of those who are in the Dodgers HOF on a board in the outfield? I just like seeing heroes recognized.

I composed something last night

Have you seen the muff chin man
The muff chin man
The muff chin man
Have you seen the muff chin man
Whose name is Clifford Lee
