PHILADELPHIA - OCTOBER 17: A detail of the first base bag in Game Two of the NLCS during the 2010 MLB Playoffs between the San Francisco Giants and the Philadelphia Phillies at Citizens Bank Park on October 17 2010 in Philadelphia Pennsylvania. (Photo by Doug Pensinger/Getty Images)

I wrote about Cliff Lee and Orel Hershiser over on SB Nation Los Angeles. Hershiser finished his 1988 with a 10-1 record in 14 starts with an ERA of 0.65. He averaged 8.89 innings per start:

In those 14 starts, ranging from August 19 to October 20, Hershiser pitched 11 complete games, plus another game in which he threw 10 scoreless innings in a no-decision.

That's a heck of a two-month stretch.

NLCS, Game 3: Phillies (Cole Hamels) at Giants (Matt Cain), 1pm (Fox)

ALCS, Game 4: Rangers (Tommy Hunter) at Yankees (A.J. Burnett), 5pm (TBS)

How do people feel

about FOX using the football music from the MLB Playoffs? Follow up question, how do people feel about a mediocre Monday Night Football matchup beating Yankees-Rangers in the Ratings by a full point?

They already dumped the real theme last season. I admit it’s weird but it’s fine.

Kind o f worthless stat

Chad Billingsley win pct. 59%, Matt Cain 48%. Cain has made 39 more starts and pitched 270 more innings than Chad, but Chad has 2 more wins.

Cain signed an extension for 19M for 2011 and 2012 (12M for 2012), no option.
Buys out first year of Free Agency.

by bhsportsguy on Oct 19, 2010 1:12 PM PDT reply actions

Cain

has had a better career ERA (~3.45 vs. ~3.55) which is good for getting paid.

Probably a pretty good comp though with wins and ERA that close.

by Michael White on Oct 19, 2010 1:14 PM PDT up reply actions

They have been hand in hand

since their minor league days, always being compared to each other. Neither turned out to be great but both are solid additions to any rotation.

If the Dodgers are ever going to buy out a year of free agency, I assume the time is now.

by Michael White on Oct 19, 2010 1:17 PM PDT up reply actions

Sounds like a reasonable deal to me.

I’ll run it by my contract expert….. Eric what do you think?

by Michael White on Oct 19, 2010 1:18 PM PDT up reply actions

Too much

His max for the next two years is, let’s say $16m ($6/$10), and I don’t think the one FA year would be $17m.

Something like 3/$28m (5.5/9/13.5) would work.

by Eric Stephen on Oct 19, 2010 1:19 PM PDT up reply actions

A couple of high-side comps

for those 3 years only (2 arb + 1 FA):

Verlander: 3/$40m (coming off a near CYA season)
Felix: 3/$38.5m (coming off a near CYA season)

Cain got 3/$27.25m for the same three years; I think Bills will end up far closer to that.

by Eric Stephen on Oct 19, 2010 1:29 PM PDT up reply actions

Jake Peavy could be a comp for Kershaw?

his two contracts (05-08 bought out arb with 09 club option/ 2010-12) eventually worked out to be 7 years 56.5mil with a club option for 2013 at 22mil. I know the new going rate is the Lester/Romero etc deal of 30/5, but I wonder how that plays.

I don't always walk, but when I do, it's into Mordor.

by G.Scott on Oct 19, 2010 1:34 PM PDT up reply actions

Too low

Peavy’s 3 arb years were:

$2.5m
$4.75m
$6m

Kershaw is likely to make more than the latter two years in his first two years of arb

by Eric Stephen on Oct 19, 2010 1:41 PM PDT up reply actions

I think I was wrong anyway. Peavy signed a 52/3 deal with a 22mil club option in 2013. The total for Peavy’s 3 arb years and 4 free agent years was 74mil.

74/7 would be a lot to give him, in both years and dollars, though 10mil a year may be a bargain.

I’m torn like a Jason schmidt labrum on this one.

I don't always walk, but when I do, it's into Mordor.

Bryce Harper has confidence in his team
“You know, I think in the next couple years, we’re gonna be the Yankees of the NL East,” he told MASN’s Byron Kerr during a conversation about his Arizona Fall League expectations. (Audio here.) “I’ve been telling everybody that. I think we’re gonna be the top program in the NL East, and we’re gonna roll. We’re gonna win some World Series. That’s everybody’s goal, and we preach that from day one. [Minor league field coordinator] Bobby Henley, he preached that from day one: ’We’re gonna win the NL East one day,’ and I really believe that we’re gonna do that. So hopefully we bring a couple of World Series to Washington, D.C.”

Not that we can afford him

but Jayson Werth would be the perfect compliment to this team. Power hitting corner outfielder, allowing Andre to move to LF. Defense gets improved, power against LHP which we don’t have at all. If you liked the team as a contender when Manny was in LF, I don’t see how Werth in RF is not an even better solution.

I don’t think the Yankees are in play if they are going to sign Lee.

I think it’s great. It’s great to see other markets investing in their teams instead of pocketing revenue sharing. Would I like to see a 100% dominant Dodgers team? Yeah, for about a month before I got bored. It’s better for the sport for teams in small and mid-markets to compete for seat-filling and jersey-selling free agents. I’m not sure Werth is either of those, but he’d certainly give any team a boost.

except as a Dodger fan I also have a right to be selfish and want my team to have a crack at the better players.

That said, any time a team other than the Yankees actually gets a top flight FA I’m down with that.

Basically :-)

More just our long tradition of expecting to be able to compete on FAs. Now some of that tradition isn’t exactly a happy one, so there are times we’re better off not being a player in that market given how much money the team threw down the drain over the years…

I’m going to go ahead and say our only top free agent signings were, in no particular order:

Kevin Brown, JD Drew, Andruw Jones, Jason Schmidt, Juan Pierre

Other than that, I can’t remember a player being signed who was considered to be either the top or in the top tier at his position.

This is the free part in Keith Law's insider comment on Zach Lee

When the Los Angeles Dodgers took right-handed pitcher Zach Lee in the first round of the 2010 Rule 4 Draft, the immediate industry reaction was that the team — known to be in tight financial straits due to the McCourts’ divorce — had punted the pick, as Lee was probably the most unsignable player in the draft, having turned down inquiries from other clubs involving potential $5 million-plus signing bonuses. The Dodgers took advantage of Lee’s dual-sport status and signed him to a backloaded contract worth $5.25 million after he decided against going to LSU to play baseball and football. This was a deal that at least two teams ahead of the Dodgers would have topped had they known he would sign.

by bhsportsguy on Oct 19, 2010 2:43 PM PDT reply actions

Lee threw in instructional league on Tuesday against San Francisco Giants right-hander Zack Wheeler in a battle of two first-round picks, but Lee looked a little tired and struggled through a long first inning where he gave up several hard-hit balls. His raw stuff was fine; it was running 89-92 with outstanding downhill plane, and he worked the outside corner with it to both left- and right-handed batters. His breaking ball was harder than it was in high school, more slider than curveball at 77-83, but was inconsistent — he threw one at 83 that was short like a cutter, one at 81 with good tilt and big break for a called third strike, but he threw several hangers including an 0-2 pitch to a right-handed hitter who had no shot unless Lee made a mistake. His changeup was lively with good fading action and arm speed.

As befits a former star quarterback, Lee is a tremendous athlete and has great body control. His arm action is simple and clean and he repeats it well, and that should lead to plus command down the line. He’s already strong at 6-foot-4 and 210 pounds, with a solid lower half, but I have a feeling he’s going to get bigger and stronger, in part because the kid looks like he’s still growing into his feet.

Honestly, though, Wheeler actually came out ahead in the battle of Zacharies on Tuesday, going an inning further than Lee with better velocity and command, even though he, like Lee, looked a little tired. Wheeler was 88-94, working side to side but more up in the zone than down, and flashed a fringy changeup that was too firm at 85. His curveball was 72-78 with good rotation but started to get slurvy at the higher end of that range. He takes a huge stride towards the plate and gets very good hip rotation after a high leg kick, although I’d like to see him turn his pitching hand up sooner rather so he’s not putting any unneeded stress on his shoulder. He was more aggressive than Lee and seemed better suited to putting guys away with two strikes on Tuesday. I like both pitchers and think they both project as No. 1 starters down the line, with the potential for some rematches between these guys when they’re both in the NL West in 2013 or 2014.

you realize that Dan Marino was to the Dolphins what Peyton Manning is to the Colts? Without him they win 4 games a year, maybe. Same thing for the colts, no other QB would win 50 percent of their games behind the line the colts are throwing out there right now. So, Marino.

Ruiz grounds into a Rice a Roni, but the Giants win.

Gin is the answer.

Mass quantities of gin.

I'm not cool enough to drink gin

but I will be enjoying some beer.

If gin isn’t the answer, I don’t want to know the question.

Who is the only man to get close enough to (the) Sun?

Didn’t she also bone that other guy who jumped off the terrace?

Yes

I thought about Yul II, but decided against it. Was he really that close to her? :)

My fault. I read the reply to your post as Ruiz did it.

I’m not listening or watching.

note to Phillies

go fuck yourselves

Game 4. Bumgardner vs. Blanton.

You mean to tell me that the Phillies aren’t going to win this series despite having 3 Aces?

by Tripon on Oct 19, 2010 4:00 PM PDT reply actions

That game could go any which way but loose

Giants favored and Blanton I wouldn’t count on but you never know what’ll happen. If the Phillies even just one game in SF they’re still alive…

I am telling you

Kind of watching from afar all year but this Phllie team can go into a slump and not score runs. And facing the Giants is no way for them to get well.

The Giants have been playing these types of games for the last 5 weeks or so.
