Matt Kemp Has Enjoyed Diamondbacks Pitching This Season

In their penultimate game of the season, Jamey Carroll takes the managerial reins, as the Dodgers and Diamondbacks do battle at Dodger Stadium.

The Dodgers have hit 18 home runs against Arizona this season in 16 games, and Matt Kemp has seven of them. Kemp, who has homered in each of his last three games, is hitting .313/.365/.672 with 17 runs and 15 RBI in 16 games against the Diamondbacks this season.

On the other end of the spectrum, A.J. Ellis, who has reached base 27 times in his last 49 plate appearances, has just one hit and three walks in 19 PA against Arizona this season.

Chad Billingsley is coming off a career-high-tying 13 strikeouts against the Diamondbacks on Sunday, and in his last three starts against Arizona has been great: 21 innings, six runs (2.57 ERA), two walks, and 32 strikeouts.

Billingsley's mound opponent Sunday was Joe Saunders, who allowed two runs in five innings, walking two while striking out six. Saunders gets the start again today.

Gerardo Parra, who started in right field last night for the Diamondbacks, is 0-for-14 this season at Dodger Stadium.

Either way, glad I get to see one last game :)

be the itch was a press box offhand comment gone mad. I can see someone, seeing the Padres-Giants season record, and going, “the Padres are like an itch the Giants just can’t scratch”. So it’s an asinine version of “Win this game like those other games you won” that we’ve seen before.

Party Time, well there’s champagne in the dugout so it’s a version of “win this game”

So the key for each team is to win the game. Fucking genius, and it took me three paragraphs to explain it

SF wins and ATL wins:

Giants win N.L West and Braves win wild card

SD wins and ATL wins:

Giants at Padres Monday for the N.L West. Loser goes to Atlanta and plays Tuesday for the NL Wild Card.

SD wins and ATL loses:

Padres win the NL West and Giants take the wild card. Both would be in the playoffs so a tiebreaker would be unnecessary. Padres have won the season series so they would get the #2 seed. Giants #4.

Torre Quote

Just read the quote about Broxton and it is terrible, if he felt that way, where was the pitching coaching staff to help him. I am beginning to wonder if Torre has any reason to make these statements is it to help or hinder Mattingly.

by wineracquet on Oct 2, 2010 4:35 PM PDT reply actions

Quote is from the LA Times Story by Dylan

But Torre said he believed Broxton’s issues were psychological and that his decline had nothing to do with his usage in the Yankees series. Torre added that at some point, Broxton would have to do some soul-searching if he intended to regain his form. “There are some scrambled eggs up there,” Torre said, referring to Broxton’s head.

by wineracquet on Oct 2, 2010 4:59 PM PDT reply actions

so he admits that he ruined Broxton and my Sunday afternoon. Finally

by Josie Becker on Oct 2, 2010 5:00 PM PDT up reply actions

And Torre is the one who keeps on sending him out there.

I don’t see why its so hard to believe Torre had some effect on Broxton inability to pitch effectively.

by Tripon on Oct 2, 2010 5:10 PM PDT up reply actions

There's nothing revelatory or inflammatory about the quote

For most of the second half Torre has praised Broxton, saying to the effect of “he’s been great and will be again” and that he has confidence in him to regain his form, eventually.

But he has also said that it’s simply something Broxton has to get through mentally, by performing better. A few weeks back, Torre noted that Broxton was tensing up, literally, in his delivery, and not letting his wrist be loose and it was affecting his control. That is more of the tangible mental stuff Torre is talking about.

by Eric Stephen on Oct 2, 2010 5:15 PM PDT up reply actions

Agree but then Torre has to do something

Agreed with you about some of Torre’s earlier comments, but this comment about tensing up and not letting his wrist be loose, then this is a mechanical flaw that needs to be worked out. Perhaps he should have brought him in early in a game to see if he could work it out.

by wineracquet on Oct 2, 2010 5:32 PM PDT up reply actions

It’s a mechanical flaw because Broxton is thinking about it too much and not relaxing.

Someone is going to be an all-time Top Ten Blown Playoffs odds "winner"

Braves Playoff odds on 9/2/10 – 97.375%
Padres Playoff odds on 8/26/10 – 96.706%
Giants Playoff odds on 10/1/10 – 96.737%

by bhsportsguy on Oct 2, 2010 5:05 PM PDT reply actions

Doubt the Braves counted on the Phillies going 21-6 since that point.

by Joey Joe on Oct 2, 2010 5:10 PM PDT up reply actions

I’m rooting for the Giants to collapse, for all the obvious reasons, but also because that record would be a difficult one to top. Sure the Braves had a higher probability, but the Giants at almost 97% barely two days before the end of the season?

by EMDarrow on Oct 2, 2010 5:17 PM PDT up reply actions

Agree —it’d seem that the playoff odds% would matter much more the closer you get to the end of the season.

During the middle of the season…those odds can fluctuate quite a bit.

A couple of notes

Furcal isn’t playing this weekend because he’s hitting .301, and Torre wants him to finish with a .300 season. Torre and Mattingly talked to Furcal and cleared it with him. Furcal might get one PH AB today or tomorrow (he can go 0-for-1 and still hit .300)

Lindsey is the hitting coach tonight. Ausmus is the bench coach. Martin is the “special assistant to the bench coach.”

by Eric Stephen on Oct 2, 2010 5:26 PM PDT reply actions

Broxton is the bullpen coach. Insert joke here.

I think the Lindsey part is funnier.

by silverwidow on Oct 2, 2010 5:33 PM PDT up reply actions

Does Furky have an incentive at .300 or do major leaguers really care about that kind of thing?

There is plenty of time between now and the start of the NBA season, for Fox and Dish Network to strike a deal.

You can always drop Dish Network.

yeah it’s lame, but these things usually don’t last more than a weekend, once Fox takes a ratings hit or Dish loses a bunch of customers. This wekend might not be enough though, unless Dish lost a bunch of UCLA fans
