Listening to KNBR
cause I forgot my transistor radio. Did you know that Bank of America also offers Giants banking? Talking about playing the field.
When I think of Huey Lewis I think of two things
Back to the Future and Patrick Bateman.
I don't know who Patrick Bateman is
But I think of the early days of MTV, when music videos were actually played on that station.

Their early work was a little too new wave for my tastes, but when Sports came out in ‘83, I think they really came into their own, commercially and artistically. The whole album has a clear, crisp sound, and a new sheen of consummate professionalism that really gives the songs a big boost. He’s been compared to Elvis Costello, but I think Huey has a far much more bitter, cynical sense of humor.

Reaction #1: Well, y’know, Elvis used to be disgusted, but now he tries to be amused.
Reaction #2: Songs don’t get more bitter or cynical than “Alison.”

I’ve been close at times to writing a blog post to the tune of Alison, but never gone through with it.

That was part of Patrick Bateman's
soliloquy at one point in the film.

Yeah, well, you know, that's just, like, your opinion, man
Blanton reminds me of Playoff B(r)ad Penny
not in a good way, obviously.

Yeah physically, windup
hard throwing, wild (as he wild pitches a runner around the bases), etc

+1
the only thing they have in common are fatness
yeah that was more just that inning reminded me of Penny...
and he throws hard meaning his delivery + motion, not specifically how fast his pitches top out.

Wonder if the Giants try to buy out his arbitration years?
I dont think they have with any of their other players.
I mean something like an Evan Longoria contract…doubt they’d do that and doubtful Posey accepts.
Or an Ubaldo deal.
Well Longo
signed the contract before playing a game didn’t he.

He did play before he signed
Just not long. Think it was less than a week.
Only until Bochy overplays him
and he turns into Russell Martin.

Phillies aren't gonna go scoreless today is all I can guarantee...
this may be a close one.

I'd rather say we ran in to one of the great teams of the decade
not that we choked away the NLCS twice, and it took a team like the Giants to get it done
William Doolittle at your service, a.k.a. will do.
Except we didn’t run into one of the great teams of the decade. The 2008 Phillies had crappy pitching, and the 2009 team had one of the worst bullpens known to man.
and yet, three straight NLCS and a WS title, so….
by Josie Becker on Oct 20, 2010 5:23 PM PDT up reply actions
well any team that plays in 3 straight world series is a great team in my book

Yeah, let’s not have sour grapes.
Except for Ruiz. That fucker! Fuck you, Ruiz!

They were one of the best teams of the decade
or you’re a very tough grader. Sheesh.
There's no need to fear, Underdog is here! / Broncos/Dodgers/Lakers fan in Niners/Raiders/Giants/Warriors country, and damned proud of it.
The 2009 Yankees were a more complete team, the 2007 or 2004 Red Sox would have blown away the Phillies, and 2003 Marlins were every good competing against teams with higher payrolls and talent.
Heck, the best teams the 2002 or 2003 Giants didn’t win a World Series.
and USC was better than LSU in 2003. Oh wait, no, that’s another thing which is subjective and impossible to determine
by Josie Becker on Oct 20, 2010 5:30 PM PDT up reply actions
We can use regular season wins, stats, MLB the Show, or the holodeck from Star Trek. Lets not elevate the Phillies from what they were. A good team that had a good run.
Best team in the decade? We had some pretty damn good teams in this decade.
I was gonna ask if there was a bigger tease this decade than the 03 Royals
The team that inexplicably got close to .500 before descending into chaos once again…
…but of course there was. The 01 Mariners. They have all the talent in the late 90s, trade it all away (or let it walk via FA), rip off a hundred and something-teen wins, then do nothing in the playoffs, then fall back into mediocrity.

I honestly did not realize
that the sentence “the Phillies are one of the great teams of the last ten years” is a controversial statement.
Now with 33% more Kavula
by Humma Kavula on Oct 20, 2010 5:39 PM PDT up reply actions
But I don’t think they were great. They play in a decade where the teams wins record was obliterated(Mariners), the single best player in the last 50 years never played for or against them(Bonds), Multiple championships(Red Sox, Yankees), compared to that, the Phillies don’t seem to be as great as other teams.
I mean, what really made the Phillies elite? I would like to see a guy like Chris Jaffe try to rank how good the past Phillies team was compared to say, the 2007 Red Sox, or the 2001 D’Backs team.
For me its equally disturbing either way
But if one of them has to win it all, I hope its the Phils. If the Giants win it all I suspect I’ll vomit my small intestine.
I'll just say
there are more complaints about game times in the East Coast when at least most people are already at home than on the West Coast where its both a hassle to get to the game at this time or impossible to watch during the week because of it.
Yeah..the east coasters have no room to complain…I feel bad for the west coasters that have to put up with these ridiculous times (just so the east coast can watch it in primetime) every year.
I don't view the times as that ridiculous
When the choice is…
(a) have a much smaller percentage of the country miss the beginning of the game; OR
(b) have a much larger percentage of the country miss the end of the game…
You go with choice (a) every single time.

Gibson HR
I was at a surprise 30th birthday party for my sister. Since it was a surprise, the party was organized (by my other sister) to be 2.5 weeks before her actual birthday. I was 12 at the time.
My brother Kelly bought a strip of four tickets that postseason; he had the same seats for every game. I believe they were in the Loge, though I might be wrong. He sold his tickets that night to two couples: I believe one he worked with, and another to a friend. The friend and his wife left the game early. D’oh.
My sister, the soon-to-be 30-year old, lived in an apartment in Tustin with my brother Greg; it was a second-floor apartment. I remember being on the floor near the TV in the apartment in the 9th inning (there were probably 30+ people easily at the party) and the graphic came on screen that said Gibson had 6 HR and 19 RBI in his postseason career. I said “better make that 7 and 21,” the kind of boast on which I am right roughly 3.4% of the time.
As soon as Gibson hit ball, I knew it was gone. I never saw it go out. Once Canseco gave up on the ball I was already jumping up and down along with almost everyone else at the party. It was awesome. So awesome, that the downstairs neighbors called the cops because we were being too loud.
I went to Game 2 the next night.

Glad you didn't jinx it! I would've been mad at you before I knew you existed ;-)
No, seriously, I had an eerie feeling about it too… can’t explain it, other than confidence in Gibson and feeling something electric was going on.
I was in my first year in the dorms at SFSU, most of my friends there were impartial fans from other cities, there was one other Dodger fan, and one benign A’s fan. A few of us were watching in my dorm room and even the non fans let out an “OMYGOD!” yelp and then slapped me on the back as my mouth hung open. Will never forget it.

not an option to supplant Ibanez, over Francisco?

2 games in a row matter of fact
because Bruce Bochy likes his vets? Torres was struggling? No idea otherwise. He’ll homer here though to make us look silly.

torres
has sucked big time in the last month or so..
Bingo
Torres was struggling?
I’m sure he was so overjoyed that he saw a CF get a hit that he had to start Rowand again.

Torres has hit .183 the last two months. It’s shuffling deck chairs at best, but Torres has done nothing to deserve play time.

Bumgarner, Kershaw, Latos...
Who has the greatest upside and which pitcher will have the most successful career?
I still have to go with Clayton for both.
latos upside is defintly the highest...
mid upper 90s…. his stuff is amazing… control is already real good….
i think bumgarner has the most successfull career… this guy is just great everywhere he goes… its crazy….
Am I the only Dodger fan
rooting against the Phils for eliminating us the last two years. Just curious I suppose.
