Dodgers Draft Report Card on Baseball America

The Dodgers draft report card has been posted on Baseball America, although it is behind a pay wall.  If you subscribe to the site, it is worth checking out at:

http://www.baseballamerica.com/online/draft/draft-dish/2010/2610849.html

To keep the integrity of the paywall I can't summarize the entire article, I will mention a few interesting points.  For one it says that 21st round pick Noel Cuevas has the most raw power of our 2010 draft class, which I thought was interesting.  It also gives James Baldwin a lot of praise, and says that either 4th round pick Leon Landry or 30th rounder Shawn Tolleson are closest the majors, although Zach Lee shouldn't be counted out either.

UPDATE:

In a separate article BA did an overview of the entire 2010 draft. Dodgers that made the cut are as follows:

Best Late Round Pick At or Below Slot Bonus:

  1. Shawn Tolleson

Best Pro Debut (College Players)

  1. Jake Lemmerman

Closest to Majors (High School Players)

  1. Zach Lee

Did they give the draft a letter grade by any chance?

Speaking of these pay walls, if I were to subscribe to one or two, what is, let’s say, your top 5?

Baseball America

I only subscribe to ESPN

At least I’m getting more than one sport out of it.

If you’re just into baseball, I wouldn’t recommend it.

by Michael White on Oct 22, 2010 9:14 AM PDT up reply actions

I subscribe to Baseball America and ESPN

and I think both are worth it. Baseball America so many subscriber required links, and they have new content almost every day. It doesn’t spend a ton of time on the current major league players, but has all the info you could ask for on college baseball, minor league prospects, and the baseball draft.

ESPN is cool because you also get ESPN the magazine with your subscription. I can honestly say that I don’t click on that many insider articles on the website, however, but when I do they are usually worth it

by Brandon Lennox on Oct 22, 2010 9:24 AM PDT up reply actions

They didn't give a grade

but it did have our total spending at $8M, although I think that has already been disclosed somewhere

I subscribed to BA for years

But the price just got a little high for me. Besides, the issues were always way behind once they hit the press. I still buy their Prospect Handbooks though.

Ignoring the bust possibilty

I get the feeling Leon Landry may turn into our next Trayvon Robinson after Trayvon is done doing his thing. Would be kind of sick to see both of those guys in the same outfield around 2014.

I don't always walk, but when I do, it's into Mordor.

by G.Scott on Oct 22, 2010 9:34 AM PDT up reply actions

That’s right. The best one can say about Dee Gordon is that he “held his own” in AA. That’s fine and he deserves the benefit of the doubt at this point. But it may work out that next year is a big one for Gordon, in the sense that the SS position opens up in 2012. Does anyone believe that Gordon will be ready to play on the big league club? If not… well, you know who I think the Dodgers will sign. And if that happens, then the role of Next Dodger Shortstop is wide open.

Lemmerman is Range Challenged

Some of the scouting reports have Lemmerman either moving to second or third depending on where his bat plays best. Good glove, decent arm but lacks optimal range for a shorstop. Aside from Hu and Justin Sellers, we don’t really have much behind Gordon on the shortstop depth chart.

Are you sure?

“To keep the integrity of the paywall I can’t summarize the entire article”. Of course you can’t quote the entire article, but are you sure it’s not OK to summarize it? I would have thought that was all right as long as you kept it short and succinct without quoting actual text beyond the occasional short quote.

by berkowit28 on Oct 22, 2010 10:04 AM PDT reply actions

The problem is that the article itself is very short

It basically says “best pure hitter: Leon Landry…best fastball: Zach Lee” it gives like a sentense about each player, but I wasn’t sure how I could summarize without giving away who was selected for each “award”.

If Eric says it’s OK to post each, then I’m totally fine with that, i’m just not exactly sure what the rules are myself

Oh that. I actually missed that line.

I generally okay with backloaded and deferred contracts for the Dodgers because I think the revenue is going to go way up once they can renegotiate the TV deal (seeing what the Rangers got really got me optimistic.)

Agreed. There is a non-zero chance Frank will settle with Jamie next month and need to raise a whole bunch of money in a hurry, which he can do by extending the Fox deal (at very good terms for Fox) and getting an upfront payment. Not saying that’s what WILL happen, just that it could.

My big concern about Crawford

Is that his speed numbers (2B/3B/SB, mostly) will take a big hit outside the Trop, and his game beyond those three stats just isn’t that impressive.

Then theres the fact that he’s a speed guy thats soon to hit 30, and I just wonder how long that aspect of his game will remain intact.

I dunno. I think that’s a smart strategy for teams to employ to get the FAs they need to put them over the top as they push for a pennant. It’s what the Dodgers did and it almost worked. But the Dodgers aren’t there at this point in time, so sacrificing future flexibility now doesn’t seem like a good idea.

There is nobody that would take the Dodgers from possible division contender to probable World Series contender.
