Dodgers Draft Report Card on Baseball America
The Dodgers draft report card has been posted on Baseball America, although it is behind a pay wall. If you subscribe to the site, it is worth checking out at:
http://www.baseballamerica.com/online/draft/draft-dish/2010/2610849.html
To keep the integrity of the paywall I can't summarize the entire article, I will mention a few interesting points. For one it says that 21st round pick Noel Cuevas has the most raw power of our 2010 draft class, which I thought was interesting. It also gives James Baldwin a lot of praise, and says that either 4th round pick Leon Landry or 30th rounder Shawn Tolleson are closest the majors, although Zach Lee shouldn't be counted out either.
UPDATE:
In a separate article BA did an overview of the entire 2010 draft. Dodgers that made the cut are as follows:Best Late Round Pick At or Below Slot Bonus:
- Shawn Tolleson
Best Pro Debut (College Players)
- Jake Lemmerman
Closest to Majors (High School Players)
- Zach Lee

Speaking of these pay walls, if I were to subscribe to one or two, what is, let’s say, your top 5?
Baseball America

ESPN
are there more/better ones

I dont subscribe to anything but from what I read b-pro has been a mess ever since Nate Silver got into politics

I only subscribe to ESPN
At least I’m getting more than one sport out of it.
If you’re just into baseball, I wouldn’t recommend it.

I subscribe to Baseball America and ESPN
and I think both are worth it. Baseball America so many subscriber required links, and they have new content almost every day. It doesn’t spend a ton of time on the current major league players, but has all the info you could ask for on college baseball, minor league prospects, and the baseball draft.
ESPN is cool because you also get ESPN the magazine with your subscription. I can honestly say that I don’t click on that many insider articles on the website, however, but when I do they are usually worth it

They didn't give a grade
but it did have our total spending at $8M, although I think that has already been disclosed somewhere

i mean does it really matter
grades dont matter untill bout 4 years later
I subscribed to BA for years
But the price just got a little high for me. Besides, the issues were always way behind once they hit the press. I still buy their Prospect Handbooks though.
Ignoring the bust possibilty
I get the feeling Leon Landry may turn into our next Trayvon Robinson after Trayvon is done doing his thing. Would be kind of sick to see both of those guys in the same outfield around 2014.
I don't always walk, but when I do, it's into Mordor.
yeah a college pick

with Lemmerman. Put some pressure on DeeWee Gordon
I don't always walk, but when I do, it's into Mordor.
That’s right. The best one can say about Dee Gordon is that he “held his own” in AA. That’s fine and he deserves the benefit of the doubt at this point. But it may work out that next year is a big one for Gordon, in the sense that the SS position opens up in 2012. Does anyone believe that Gordon will be ready to play on the big league club? If not… well, you know who I think the Dodgers will sign. And if that happens, then the role of Next Dodger Shortstop is wide open.

I'm not even sure he held his own
He had an error every inning (not really) and a wOBA of .303.
Hard to do much worse.
By comparison, De Jesus posted a wOBA of .371 in AA in 2008.

Lemmerman is Range Challenged
Some of the scouting reports have Lemmerman either moving to second or third depending on where his bat plays best. Good glove, decent arm but lacks optimal range for a shorstop. Aside from Hu and Justin Sellers, we don’t really have much behind Gordon on the shortstop depth chart.

Kind of fitting that I read where Peter Chernin may be part of the new organization. I’ll be glad to not have to be associated with him.
Yeah, well, you know, that's just, like, your opinion, man
Besides Sands and/or Baez
Is there anyone in the organization who could conceivably project as a future 3b? I’m thinking Late Night or someone like him. That position looks barren . . .

Matthew Kirkland was a highly regarded draft choice, this year, and Jeff Hunt, albeit in a small sample size, has looked promising. I would like to see Chris Henderson show some power.

“To keep the integrity of the paywall I can’t summarize the entire article”. Of course you can’t quote the entire article, but are you sure it’s not OK to summarize it? I would have thought that was all right as long as you kept it short and succinct without quoting actual text beyond the occasional short quote.
The problem is that the article itself is very short
It basically says “best pure hitter: Leon Landry…best fastball: Zach Lee” it gives like a sentense about each player, but I wasn’t sure how I could summarize without giving away who was selected for each “award”.
If Eric says it’s OK to post each, then I’m totally fine with that, i’m just not exactly sure what the rules are myself

Q: Saw your tweet (after Game 4 of the NLCS) that San Francisco is “totally underrated as a baseball city” and “you can’t have a better playoff atmosphere than that.” I am a Dodgers fan who HATES THE GIANTS. You didn’t really describe Silicon Valley techie dorks and fair-weather hipster grad students who miss the first two innings because their ultimate Frisbee game ran late as “underrated” baseball fans right? They couldn’t even sell out Game 3!

Simmons is so funny/out of touch. He gets amazed, amazed!, any time a fan base other then from Boston or New York gets fired up for a playoff game. I remember the hilarious column he wrote about how underrated Warriors fans were based on their playoff run a few years ago.
Especially given the fact that
That park is actually somewhat undersized (only holds what, 42k or something like that?)

42 k is “undersized”?

The fact that DS holds 56K,
which is far more than 42, or the capacities of a lot of other new ballparks, and they consistently draw 50 but get reamed by Giants fans about having empty seats continues to baffle and anger me. I’m always pointing that out to the point where I want every biased Giants fan to take a freaking math class.

For a Major League stadium
Its a bit on the small side, yea. Most are in the 50k range, give or take.
Huh, not quite as small as I thought
But still, its in the bottom half. My overall point remains that we’re not talking about a huge stadium not being sold out in the middle of June, we’re talking about a… okay, fairly average-sized park not selling out for a playoff game.
Would anyone be interested in a heavily backloaded 4/76 deal for Crawford?

Oh that. I actually missed that line.
I generally okay with backloaded and deferred contracts for the Dodgers because I think the revenue is going to go way up once they can renegotiate the TV deal (seeing what the Rangers got really got me optimistic.)
by Michael White on Oct 22, 2010 10:26 AM PDT up reply actions
I’m not holding my breath on that revenue actually being used to significantly up the player payroll until I’m proven wrong or the team is sold, though.
Agreed. There is a non-zero chance Frank will settle with Jamie next month and need to raise a whole bunch of money in a hurry, which he can do by extending the Fox deal (at very good terms for Fox) and getting an upfront payment. Not saying that’s what WILL happen, just that it could.

My big concern about Crawford
Is that his speed numbers (2B/3B/SB, mostly) will take a big hit outside the Trop, and his game beyond those three stats just isn’t that impressive.
Then theres the fact that he’s a speed guy thats soon to hit 30, and I just wonder how long that aspect of his game will remain intact.
I'm generally not a fan of deals for positional players longer then 3 years
So yeah, more then 5 would make me very concerned.

I dunno. I think that’s a smart strategy for teams to employ to get the FAs they need to put them over the top as they push for a pennant. It’s what the Dodgers did and it almost worked. But the Dodgers aren’t there at this point in time, so sacrificing future flexibility now doesn’t seem like a good idea.

As much as I like Crawford, he really isn’t in that elite level of players. Basically his inclusion on our team is not going to take us for possible division contender to probable World Series contender.
There is nobody that would take the Dodgers from possible division contender to probable World Series contender.
I don’t even think swapping out Loney for Miggy would do that. It would help, but no one player would make such a change (IMO)

No one player
but a combination of players, and comebacks could make it happen. If / When they sign Kuroda we will already have a better rotation then what started out the 2010 year. Crawford in 2011 is better then any realistic expectations of Manny in 2010.
