I am liking their team a ton t his year but Long Beach will be a challenge as will a few other teams in the league. BW has improved greatly over past year or two. So I am excited about UCSB but would almost rather they not be the favorite, that really seems to help anyone’s chances…

Webster vs. Rubby from the last thread
Webster – Low-mid 90’s sinking FB, sharp curve, BA said he had the best changeup of MWL, 50% GB rate. I’ve seen a few of his starts to know that he mixes in a lot of his pitches, I would say he uses his fastball 65% of the time. His best pitch is easily his changeup. Has a chance to start in AA at 21.
Rubby- 100 mph arm. Goundball rate through the roof. Will be 22 in AA. Needs refining on his offspeed stuff.
I can see why people would pick Webster over RDLR.
That is way too advanced for low-A hitters.

by Michael White on Oct 28, 2010 4:05 PM PDT up reply actions
That was the first time in his life he pitched over 100 innings
Hopefully it was just a case of being tired by the time he got to AA, and he will bounce back with more endurance and arm strength.
Don't have his game log
but I don’t think he was as good. Just not as bad as he was for those starts in AA.
Check this out
Watch where his throwing arm is at its highest point. He doesn’t bring his arm back away from home plate very much, and practically lifts it straight up like a catcher.
I’m no MLB scout, but from personal experience, yes, that adds great movement to all offspeed pitches and sinking fastballs, but my God does it wear your shoulder out faster than Ralphy May in a triathlon. I know what they’re saying about his mechanics, but his arm action screams “Trade Bait” to me.

Jason Grey of ESPN has a profile of Trayvon Robinson
http://insider.espn.go.com/sports/fantasy/blog?name=grey_jason&id=5737670
Because Eric Stephen keeps on yelling me for this. I’ll just post an excerpt.
Perhaps the biggest thing that has made him a legitimate starting outfield prospect and a potential big leaguer in the near future is an improved approach at the plate that has resulted in a big spike in his walk rate over the past two seasons. Robinson became less focused on his swing mechanics as he got more comfortable switch-hitting, and more focused on what he does before the swing. The coaching staff also implemented some “preset takes” to help Robinson with his approach. “I was forced to take some pitches,” Robinson said. “It got me ready to be patient and have a game plan every day and every at-bat. Just stay patient and not try to rush things, and take the walks if they’re given to you.”
For Phil: One reason why he’s probably a better prospect than Xavier Paul ever was.
MLB hitters should have "preset" takes..
So many ABs just given away many nights.
This kid sounds like he’ll succeed at the MLB level.
Really like the instruction being given at the Dodgers minor league level.
Seemed in years past they emphasized contact ahead of discipline/power.
Resulting in James Loney.
And Xavier Paul...
If they did preset takes with Trayvon and it worked….
Please by all means do that with Dee Gordon.
I'm just playing devils advocate
I like Trayvon, and hope he can be our center fielder, that the walk rate is real, that the reports of him being able to play CF are real, that he really has grown as a hitter, that reports of his arm being girly came from those who never saw Fernandez throw. That still does not make him better then Zach Lee.
If he goes one year without blowing his arm up
he will be the number one prospect, barring complete suck by him, or complete domination by someone else.

Of course that’s what usually happens with WS teams is that pretty much everything goes right for them. But with the Giants so many borderline moves with iffy players that could have totally backfired all seemed to pay off. Thus my theory about Santeria rituals.

He completely confounds me. He doesnt strike many guys out, doesnt have a crazy low walk rate, but he just doesnt give up runs. He really is the guy that completely breaks FIP and XFIP.
by UCLADodger32 on Oct 28, 2010 6:11 PM PDT up reply actions
And what’s really strange is that it holds up on home/road splits. He has mastered the ability to allow hitters to hit the ball to the warning track in every stadium.
Just looked a little more at his numbers. Career LD% of 18%. Career BABIP of .274. Just ridiculous.

fly ball pitcher
fly balls have a lower BABIP then GBs..
They are also supposed to give up more homeruns though. He somehow gets the BABIP of a flyball guy with the hr/g of a groundball guy. Its strange.
Go to fangraphs and check his tERA. I don’t know offhand.
"If we hit that bull's eye, the rest of the dominoes will fall like a house of cards. Checkmate"

Ya. That number is like a career #3/4 type guy. He just might be the one guy that the system doesnt really apply to. It doesnt make a whole lot of sense, but there has to be something behind it because of how long it has lasted.
by UCLADodger32 on Oct 28, 2010 6:25 PM PDT up reply actions
Ya, but it makes a little more sense because of his strikeout numbers. Cain K’s 7 guys per 9 and doesnt give up hits or homeruns. Bastard.
by UCLADodger32 on Oct 28, 2010 6:28 PM PDT up reply actions
Not that low. Just looking at this year, he was in the top 5 in highest FB% and the people around him had BABIPS of .290, .291, Lilly at .259, .294, .280. He just has had either an unprecedented run of luck or he just has a way to make guys hit the ball in the air, not give up home runs, and not give up hits.

If the Giants do end up winning the WS I've already prepared my polite Facebook status message
“Congrats to any Giants fans I know (*who have been a fan longer than 2 months) on your team’s victory!”
Fair?

Yeah that scene is going to be ugly at Dodger Stadium…especially if the Giants do win the world series.
It could be uglier in SF with Giants fans feeling cockier
and Dodger fans feeling surly.

True...but Giants 1st home series next year is vs the Cardinals..Dodgers are the 2nd home series..
So at least the Dodgers wont have to sit thru their flag/ring ceremony…
Thanks, I had this exact thought on the way home, about 7:45 … wondering if we were going to be their first home series. Maybe they’ll put it off just for us?!

how about
Well, it only took your team 52 years to luck into a World Series championship. Congrats.

I'm gonna take a higher road
but will reserve the right to think that and many other things.

I do feel for you guys who live up there.
This won’t nearly affect me as much as it affects you.

It's gonna suck, no doubt about it
Though as I said I can just take the high road (and hide my Dodger-ness for a few months) and whatever.

there's always the Lakers season
and the fact that you live in possibly the best city in the US, IMO
Overqualified in an underqualified world since 2008.
Lakers are always my savior
I will proudly wear my Lakers stuff wherever I go and know they will be among the best.
It’s a great city, which makes it mysterious that Giants fans are so insecure about their standing vs LA, etc.

yeah
I love it up there, I wanted to move there but couldn’t land a job first so it was just too risky with the cost of living and all. Maybe they’re just really smug because of the stereotype of LA being soulless, superficial, etc? Weird.
Overqualified in an underqualified world since 2008.
I usually love it here too but feel like moving this week :-/

I hate Romo much more than Wilson
(despite the latter’s dumb beard and hand gesture). If I could choose a wishful thinking goat in this game it would be Romo.

Also, FUCK THE GIANTS
Just think about it logically, it won't affect your day to day life
no one will kill you, no one will die, maybe G fans will even be more benign now that they’re finally getting laid.

Worse news
When we lost 15 – 1 today in the AFL it was our Stephen Aames who gave up 7 runs without getting an out. Wonder who he replaced. Maybe Justin Miller who had a 28.00 ERA
Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen
Rangers bullpen forgot to pack their strikes.
"You can't please me. You never met me. Zoë, why do I have a wife? "
I would kill to have the Rangers be able to acquire last night's 9th inning
in exchange for tonight’s 8th.

I'm starting to think there's a reason the Rangers were never in the playoffs
Let justice be done, though the world perish.
What's doubly amazing
is this is the hacktastic Giants they are walking. I doubt I could walk that many Giants.

and it was 2-0

You know, in a World Series game, down 1 game to none, in the bottom of the 8th, trailing 2-0, with two out
when your fucking middle relievers have loaded the goddamn bases with walks, bring in your badass closer to stop the bleeding, hopefully, and then hope you can scrape up the two runs.

It's really asinine isn't it?
Ranger fans on Lone Star Ball, in their new post game thread, are not happy. Surprising.

Ron is gesturing for the bullpen coach to send Feliz back to the clubhouse.

9-0 is the score that’s recorded when one team forfeits.

But it's true!
man it’s like a coming out party.
I bet I know more about the 2009 Giants than most of these poseurs. Sigh.
But I remember when the Broncos won their 2nd straight super bowl i knew more broncos “fans” and was like, did you suffer through the three horrible super bowls? if not, eff you! you don’t get to celebrate.

im especially annoyed at my friend. I had to teach her about baseball (there’s the NL and the AL…) bc she was interested in some guy who liked baseball. Anyway, today she said to me: “why are u thinking of going to this meeting when there’s a world series game to watch.”
I was annoyed.
u created a monster

This is all Broxton's fault!
He saves the All-Star Game that helps the National League win home-field advantage in the World Series and also his imploding and subsequent removal from the Closers job and basic unreliability. And now Texas who is 0-11 in SF had to play the first 2 games there and now they are down 0-2. F U Broxton! You are ruining my life!
this is all the Rangers shitty bullpen's fault
1000x more than it is Broxton’s but I see your point.
