So back to baseball - Loney
How do we get rid of this guy?
Can we trade him to Tampa for something?
Loney for Zobrist?
Haha
That is one way, but if we could get something useful for him, that would be nice. There has to be some hitting coach somewhere that sees some potential in him.
That’s fine. Obviously I would rather have something then nothing. But at his salary he hurts the team and potential suitors can give the Dodgers low-ball offers since they think he’ll be non-tendered.
If you get a C prospect for Loney I’d be shocked.

Yeah, I know. It’s fun to thin about though.
For the record, I still like Martin and hope he comes back. I just hope he hits second more often with Donnie. I always felt like he was better suited for hitting the ball the other way when the leadoff guy got on, getting on base in front of big guys, and needing better pitches to hit, as opposed to trying to drive in runs with the pitcher on deck.

what are people using as criteria for slugging? Karros may not have been the perfect first baseman but for the all time LA Dodger home run champion it seems weird that you can’t use the word slugger for him. Was Ron Cey not a slugging 3rd baseman?

The more interesting question to me
is why so many hate on Loney but defend Kemp to death where at the same age they have the exact same OPS+. Now they can say that Kemp is a CF, but does it matter if he sucks at it? They can say Kemp is only 25, but these folk who hate on Loney today, hated on him here last year when he had just finished his age 25 season.
Loney has gotten progressively worse the past 3 seasons and people have gotten generally more hostile each year. Kemp did have defensive and offensive value prior to this year. People have an idea of what they want in a first baseman and didn’t think Loney would ever fit into that mold. People don’t want to crucify Kemp after 1 bad year but are willing to do it to Loney after 3.
by Michael White on Oct 29, 2010 2:45 PM PDT up reply actions
But for the most part
most of you were crucifying Loney after only two.
I think most of you would have to admit you were shocked to find out they had the same OPS+ at the same age.
I certainly was. I didn’t think Loney had the ability to be a lasting answer at first base considering that it is the least demanding defensive position where a club needs to get power production. Had the Dodgers traded him a few years ago his value was there, but now they waited an unbelivably he actually got worse.
Hey, if Kemp puts in another shit-tastic year the opinions here will be very different. I think it’s a mechanical issue with Kemp that can be fixed. Loney is what he is.
by Michael White on Oct 29, 2010 2:51 PM PDT up reply actions
Ok, but
Loney is propped up by a couple very good OPS+ numbers in his first two years. The last three years have been 103, 103 and 99. Weighted averages man, stats rules suggest he’ll be at about a 97 next year, so his production is inverse to his salary.

Ideally Dunn.
But it doesn’t matter. Loney’s wOBA ended at .315. You can’t pay him $4.5MM for that kind of production (for a firstbaseman!)

Why would you be willing to gamble 40-60 million dollars on a guy who’s only skills are power and walks? His power starts to drop, hes gonna keep the same amount of walks? I doubt it. He doesnt make contact and he will set the Dodger K record by August, good for Kemp I guess.
Maybe we can talk to Bud and let us use Dunn for offense and Loney on defense.

I'd still rather have Beltre
and his elite D. He might only OPS .800, but its better for the next 4 years of this club if Sands turns out to be a legit 1B. Plus there always dudes like Branyan, Huff, etc. it seems like you can put at 1B and get lucky with.

Could I sign Beltre?
If so, it would be some platoon with Casey Blake.
Otherwise, I’d take a one year deal crack at one of D. Lee//Glaus/Berkman/Cantu/Huff
Even someone like Wigginton, Kotsay, Overbay wouldn’t be terrible for one year if they were cheap and we could allocate those dollars elsewhere.
Alright so Beltre
and then some cheap lefty to platoon with Blake. Kotsay, Overbay, Branyan – one of those guys. The market is flooded with mediocre 1B that are still better and will probably be cheaper than Loney.
I agree. I’d target Dunn, but assuming you wouldn’t I wanted to know the gameplan.
by Michael White on Oct 29, 2010 2:11 PM PDT up reply actions
If I could get Beltre AND Dunn I would do that, but I don’t think we could afford it. So if I had to target one, I would go with Beltre.
Then if there was enough left over, my ideal platoon partner with Blake would be Berkman, but I’m guessing we couldn’t afford that either, so I’m resigned to the Kotsay, Overbay, Branyan crowd.
IF, we could afford it, a Berkman/Blake platoon could produce a .900 OPS.
But are they more cost effective at it?

More just worries about his health
being stable enough that he could play in the field for a whole season, rather than be a DH. Not as much thinking his bat is done as his body. Then again if platooning that might give him enough time off to make it work.

was to make the first full time Spring Training facility in Vero Beach Florida. He encouraged the use of now-commonplace tools such as the batting cage, pitching machines, and batting helmets. He also pioneered the use of statistical analysis in baseball (what is now known as sabermetrics), when he hired statistician Allan Roth as a full-time analyst for the Dodgers in 1947. After viewing Roth’s evidence, Rickey promoted the idea that on-base percentage was a more important hitting statistic than batting average. While working under Rickey, Roth was also the first person to provide statistical evidence that platoon effects were real and quantifiable.
And oh yes, he also drafted a young black second baseman, by the name of Jack Roosevelt Robinson.
Let’s go back to this one. ;-)

And he didn't draft Robinson
Branch Rickey was actually reviled by some in the Negro Leagues because he did not offer compensation (money) to them when he signed Robinson, Newcombe and Campanella. They owners of the teams that those players had contracts with, did let them go for the greater good but felt Rickey took advantage of that situation.
Others like Bill Veeck did pay compensation when he signed players like Larry Doby.
Doby would have had an even better career
if he didn’t beat himself up over his mistakes.

Any update on the PTBNL?
Sorry if this is too often asked but does anyone know when the Dodgers-Rockies are due to consummate their Dotel trade, i.e., the mysterious PTBNL? Sometime soon I assume, or do they have ’til before spring training?
I realize this player will not in all likelihood exactly be a top prospect, but just curious to learn who it will be.

They have up to 6 months after the deal to complete it, but it is likely a dude on the 40-man so it will probably be before November 20 (when rosters need to be set)

by SeanMillerSavior on Oct 29, 2010 2:23 PM PDT up reply actions
The rules are that the PTBNL has to be named within 6 months, and that after the trade the PTBNL can’t play in the same league as the new team.
If it was non 40-man guys, they wouldn’t have had to clear waivers so they could have been dealt immediately. It is still possible that the Dodgers and Rockies agreed to a certain date by which LA could choose from an agreed upon list.
But it’s probably a 40-man player, and someone who didn’t play for the Rockies in the final two weeks.

broke it down given that last sentence, to the three or so players who that would be, right? Just forgetting those names.

I'm sorry Underdog
but if Colorado sends us a player that actually has a major league future for one month of Dotel I’ll be the most surprised person in America so I don’t see the point in even thinking about it. Then again I was the most surprised person in America when Ned traded McDonald and Lambo (not just Lambo which would have made sense) for two months of a relief pitcher that most of us thought we didn’t need because one, we weren’t in a pennant race or two because our bullpen was not the problem and even if it was, McDonald should have been able to handle Dotels role.
So maybe you are right. Maybe we will get something that we will find some reason of optimism about.
I don't disagree with the assessment that the odds are
it isn’t going to be anyone that valuable or exciting. That said we didn’t expect bubkas for Pierre and got 2 useful (if not great) players who ended up contributing in some fashion last year. We likely won’t get anyone any better than even those guys, but you never know.
So you are probably right but I just thought it an honest question that is (gasp!) on topic and about the Dodgers. So while I welcome any or all humorous responses, don’t think it’s such a pointless question that it deserves being sneered at either. :-P
There's no need to fear, Underdog is here! / Broncos/Dodgers/Lakers fan in Niners/Raiders/Giants/Warriors country, and damned proud of it.

A film that predates Silnce but based on same series of books
it’s based on Thomas Harris’ Red Dragon. Was directed by Michael Mann. Had exc British actor Brian Cox as Hannibal Lecter. Story is a prequel to Lambs if I recall.
