Dodgers Week 26 In Review: A Fun Week To End A Not-So-Fun Season

It was a tough season for the Dodgers, but that last week sure was fun. They ended the Rockies' playoff hopes with a sweep at Coors Field, then took two of three from the Diamondbacks, sending Joe Torre, and Brad Ausmus, out with a win in their final games.

Dodger Batter of the WeekMatt Kemp ended his season as strong as he started it. The Bison went on a home run barrage, hitting long balls in the final five games of the season, tying a club record, and hit .273/.360/.955 with 12 RBI in six games.

Honorable mention goes to Rafael Furcal (4-for-10 with two triples), Casey Blake (four extra-base hits in Coors Field), and Andre Ethier (reached base in his final eight plate appearances of the season.

Dodger Pitcher of the Week: Ted Lilly had two starts this week, and won them both, allowing just two runs total in 15 innings. After a brief lull, Lilly ended his season on a high note, as he hopes to cash in during free agency.

Honorable mention goes to Chad Billingsley, who ended his season by taking a no-hitter into the sixth inning in his final start; and Hong-Chih Kuo and Kenley Jansen, who blew away their opponents in a dominant back end of the bullpen.

Week 26 Record:  5-1
30 runs scored (5.00 per game)
24 runs allowed (4.00 per game)
.601 pythagorean winning percentage

Final Season Record:  80-82
667 runs scored (4.12 per game)
692 runs allowed (4.27 per game)
.483 pythagorean winning percentage (78-84)

Interesting factoids from the NY Times related to Furcal and his .330 Avg

"Two economists at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, while investigating how round numbers influence goals, examined the behavior of major league hitters from 1975 to 2008 who entered what became their final plate appearance of the season with a batting average of .299 or .300 (in at least 200 at-bats).

They found that the 127 hitters at .299 or .300 batted a whopping .463 in that final at-bat, demonstrating a motivation to succeed well beyond normal (and in what was usually an otherwise meaningless game).

Most deliciously, not one of the 61 hitters who entered at .299 drew a walk — which would have fired those ugly 9s into permanence because batting average considers bases on balls neither hit nor at-bat."

by BFDC on Oct 4, 2010 7:55 AM PDT reply actions

title fail above.. Should say “Furcal and his .300 Avg”

by BFDC on Oct 4, 2010 7:55 AM PDT up reply actions

Taking my usual ’let’s put stats into ocntext’ position, isn’t it far more likely that they hit .463 in their final at bat because it is a guy who has hit .300 in the major leagues all season likely facing a AAA or AAAA reliever in the late innings of a meaningless game?

I’m curious how many of the .299 or .300 hitters had their final at bat of the regular season in a clinching game. Otherwise, I’m going to assume they all got hits off Cory Wade.

Are you already writing a 2011 preview? :)

by Eric Stephen on Oct 4, 2010 8:08 AM PDT up reply actions

Boy I hope not.

I keep buying what you’ve been selling; that the Dodgers will not go into the season with a guy like Monk or Ely as the 5th starter, let alone both at 4 and 5.

On that front, I see that Colorado has made it a priority (so they say) to re-sign De La Rosa. Too bad, I really wanted the Dodgers to make a run at him.

by Michael White on Oct 4, 2010 8:21 AM PDT up reply actions

Yeah

I think at a bare minimum, the Dodgers will sign 2 actual starting pitchers and perhaps have the 5th battle be between some NRIs or something, but I don’t think Ely/Monk start the season higher than 6th on the depth chart.

by Eric Stephen on Oct 4, 2010 8:24 AM PDT up reply actions

I just saw where Detroit has basically said goodbye to Bonderman. He seems to be a likely candidate for our rotation.

by OB12 on Oct 4, 2010 8:30 AM PDT up reply actions

In his first full season back from injury (since 2008), he put up an x-FIP of 4.74 in 171 innings pitched. Not great, but I’m intrigued as to what he can do his second year back from injury in the NL in a park like Dodgers stadium. I wouldn’t go crazy with the contract terms, but he’s a great target for the Dodgers.

by Michael White on Oct 4, 2010 8:33 AM PDT up reply actions

Yeah, I see him getting a contract similar to what Padilla go this season and I would definitely take him on those terms.

by OB12 on Oct 4, 2010 8:47 AM PDT up reply actions

Before getting hurt in 2008

Bonderman had x-FIP seasons of 3.91, 3.86, 3.49 and 3.96 from 2004 through 2007. And even though it seems like the guy has been around forever (because he has) he came up at 20. Next season will be his year 28 season.

by Michael White on Oct 4, 2010 8:54 AM PDT up reply actions

I gotta believe that the strategy to filling out the staff will be:
Sign one of Lilly or Kuroda
Sign two of Padilla, Bonderman, Harang, amongst others.

Basically, sign one of the two guys that can be depended on to be a solid #3 with flashes of brilliance. Then fill out the backend with major league pitchers who could be had relatively cheaply.

by OB12 on Oct 4, 2010 9:03 AM PDT up reply actions

At what point does xFIP stop being relevant

if you continually give up more runs then your peripherals suggest you should? His ERA in those same years were 4.89, 4.57, 4.08, 5.01. And that was when he could throw hard.

His fastball is now barely 90, and his slider is now 81. He has a K rate below 6.00 and a walk rate above 3.0.

by Michael White on Oct 4, 2010 9:20 AM PDT up reply actions

Your point is taken though. All I’ve got is the stats, if his pitch offerings are crap now, then it will be difficult to replicate Padilla’s success at D.S.

by Michael White on Oct 4, 2010 9:25 AM PDT up reply actions

Not like our defense is going help in that area

we need to stay away from pitchers who induce ground balls or fly balls. Pitching to contact for this team is probably not a good battle plan.

I don’t. Considering the easiest thing to do is to start someone like Trayvon at CF. Can’t imagine the starting CF next year will be better defensively. Furcal will be a year older. That’s 2 premium defensive spots which will likely be the same (or worse in the case that 2011 Furcal < 2010 Furcal.

The general preference to want pitchers who rely less on their defense is universal enough to not matter much who will be on the 2011 roster.

Besides, I don’t expect a ton of change this offseason.

by Eric Stephen on Oct 4, 2010 9:33 AM PDT up reply actions

But odds are

that Kemp and Ethier are two of the OFs; if a LF is brought in, he’s not likely to be a defensive wiz. Blake is under contract and we know he’s an old 3B. Furcal is here, but who know how much he plays.

I don’t see it. Even though blowing up the team might make some sense, the Frank/Ned team has always attempted to put a competitive team out there. More regarding coaching staff

from Gurnick at mlb.com last night:

First-base coach Mariano Duncan said he spoke with general manager Ned Colletti Sunday and was told “there might be a job for me if I don’t get one somewhere else,” Duncan said. “I don’t know where that leaves me.”

Because of that, the naming of a staff might take some time.

“We’re not going to do it piecemeal,” said Colletti, who would not comment on individual coaches.

I just wrote a couple paragraphs on why they mean nothing to the team, then realized they probably do a whole lot of stuff I don’t see, so this is what we get.

They probably put in countless hours working with runners pre- and post-game, in the offseason and ST, and probably remind runners when they get to first of the situation, the pitcher’s tendencies and what move to look for, so in that case, if they think Mariano isn’t helping, find someone else.

Ken Levine

bade a farewell to Joe Torre on his blog.

Joe is the definition of a mensch . Whether it’s a superstar player or just the schmuck who hosts the postgame radio show, he treats everyone the same – with respect and kindness.
I only covered two games from the press box this season – and the Dodgers won both, so I’ve got to do that more in ’11 – but I can agree that whatever criticisms I have about Torre the game manager, he is very good with the press and seems quite sincere in his approach to people and going about his jobs. All in all, the three Joe Torre years in LA have been a net positive.

Right

Regardless, the DBacks get #7, the Padres get #10 and the Brewers get #15, but it’s listed as Angels 14, brewers 15, Dodgers 16, marlins 17 when I think it should be Marlins 14, Brewers 15, Dodgers 16, Angels 17.

I guess I was wrong anyway, but the Angels over the Dodgers messed with me.

Agreed.

I would have been upset if the Angels, A’s, and Tigers had all lost yesterday. The Dodgers certainly do need a protected first-round pick. But I got my wish — it’s all good.

It was certainly nice to see them end the season on a high note. Obviously, I think it means nothing for next year, but it was nice to see flashes of greatness, especially from the guy I’m now struggling to call my favorite, Kemp.

Poor Tigers

That is the worst place to finish — first unprotected pick. Your team wasn’t good enough to compete — they were out of it for a long time. And they also can’t sign a guy who can help next year, or they lose a valuable building block for the future. And that building block — with the 19th pick, sure, it’ll be a real prospect, but will it be a franchise guy?

That’s even worse than the Padres’ finish. Yeah, their pick is even lower, and yeah, it’s also unprotected, and yeah, they didn’t make the playoffs — but at least their team was right in the mix, right up until the last game.

I'll just

add – went to all 3 games (for the first time this year) and I just really think that fans just love to go to games, even folks who probably go to 3-5 games a year, are happy to be there, wear Dodger Blue, get some food and some souvenirs. Is that enough to sustain 3.5 million a year, probably not but any chance of revolt is probably not that great.

Season ticket sales, yes for sure but the Dodger Stadium will still be a nice play to go to in the summer for lots of people.

Lilly will be offered arb, and he’ll accept, but they’ll reach agreement on a two-year deal before the hearing. Prediction: Lilly stays healthy and munches up 200 innings, which is all that the Dodgers can ask of him… but he provides slightly-below-average pitching over the course of the year.

Padilla will sign for about what he signed for this year. Prediction: He’s back and pitches well, then gets hurt. Comes back, pitches well, then gets hurt. Comes back at the break, stays healthy, but pitches terribly as the Dodgers fall outside even the fringes of the race, and gets phantom DL’d in mid-August. Comes back in mid-September and pitches well enough.

3. Podsednik.

1 and 2 certainly look right

3 might take care of itself quickly. I wonder if the Dodgers would be satisfied to have Podsednik back. And if they are, and Podsednik likes LA, can they work out a deal quickly? If the stars align there, this might be the first deal of the off-season.

Catcher — I really think this will take care of itself. I will predict Dodgers go the non-tender/re-sign Martin route. That might take longer to work out, though.

I will go out on a limb: the Dodgers will get caught in the same 5th starter trap that they got caught in this year. This will not be resolved by the start of spring training. The job will go to whichever retread NRI pitches best in Glendale.

I’ll add First Base to the list. I do think that the Dodgers will q-u-i-e-t-l-y shop Loney and see if there’s an Overbay type they can get on the cheap.

Would not be surprised to see it end up as some sort of platoon with Gibbons and someone like Gomes to start the year. Wait until one of them gets hurt, bring up Trayvon or Sands and see what one of them can do.

I would love to see a platoon in LF for 2011. I think that’s the best way to get good value at that position. I think good teams do not sign Scott Podsednik to play LF every day.

I don’t think it is as much about service time as it is about management believing that both Robinson and Sands need a half season at AA or AAA. I do agree that Robinson is better than Paul and I would certainly like to see him called up if ready.

by OB12 on Oct 4, 2010 11:34 AM PDT up reply actions

Defensive value of Robinson in CF could be an added benefit. Tray should be better defensively in CF than Kemp, and Kemp is moved to right and Ethier to left.

As Kensai says, its Kemp’s instincts that is screwing him up on defense, not his positioning, range, etc. Don’t know how that would improve in right field vs. Center.

I wouldn’t. Paul shouldn’t sniff a starting outfielder job against RHP. His career major league TSL against RHP .229/.280/.349. Yeah, I know, “only” 121 PAs, and he’s young. But correct me if I’m wrong — he always projected as a backup outfielder, right? That’s what he appears to be. I can’t see him sucking up, what, 400 PA against RHP.

Right. We already have a better player in Trayvon Robinson. Paul for all intents and purposes is what he is. Robinson seems at least he can hold down the position. He’ll be Juan Pierre but can actually field.

I know this is just a throwaway, flip comment, but it’s something I’d actually like to discuss.

I’ve read some people say that Trayvon will/should be the Dodgers’ top prospect right now. What does he project as — is his bat really comparable to Pierre’s? Is that OK if he can actually field CF well? Should we be excited about Robinson, or worried that he might be the best position player the system can produce right now?

Actually his game is nothing like Juan Pierre.

He is fast, he can steal bases. But Robinson is much taller and stockier. B-Ref lists him at 5’11, and 195 lbs.

http://www.baseball-reference.com/minors/player.cgi?id=robins001tra

He hasn’t shown much power, but way more than JP would. He’s more like Carl Crawford than Juan Pierre if anybody.

Also, Robinson knows what a a walk looks like.

He’s got more power and patience that Juan, but he’d probably hit .210 if he jumped to the bigs now. If the Dodgers had any plans for him in April 2011 he would have been getting starts in September.

So really, he’s got absolutely nothing in common with Juan except being fast.

by regfairfield on Oct 4, 2010 11:39 AM PDT up reply actions

Didn’t Robinson have an injury in late Aug? I would think that’s the main reason he wasn’t called up. Its not as if the club hasn’t called up player in late Sept and sent them back to the minors the next season.

Paul deserves another chance to be a backup

(agree with the above sentiment that he doesn’t deserve or project to be a starter) but his splits suggest he can be a pretty decent and cheap 4th outfielder. I’m not ready to cut bait on him. But agree Robinson and Sands clearly have better upside.

Paul of course needs to stay healthy for once, he’s had some bad luck as much as anything though.

One of the amazing things about this discussion is that nobody has mentioned 2nd or 3rd base. Both will have an unacceptable option starting at the position on opening day. There is nothing that the Dodgers can or will do about it.

Classier than Tommy Blackjack since 2010

by Humma Kavula on Oct 4, 2010 11:39 AM PDT up reply actions

There is nothing that the Dodgers can or will do about it.

There’s plenty they can do. They can sign or trade for replacements for both or look to someone (like DeJesus) to fill in at second base after they trade or non-tender Theriot. But they won’t do anything about second base. They have allegedly started working out Sands at third, so they must be thinking about life post Casey Blake.

by Michael White on Oct 4, 2010 11:45 AM PDT up reply actions

Sands at 3rd in no way will work at all.

by Tripon on Oct 4, 2010 11:47 AM PDT up reply actions

Is there a reason why you feel that Sands won’t be able to handle 3B?

by OB12 on Oct 4, 2010 12:15 PM PDT up reply actions

Because the Dodgers would have done it after he was drafted in 08 if they actually think he could do it. Or in 09 when at Odgen when they were trying to tweak his swing after a bad start at low-A. Or at the beginning of 10 when there was no other viable 3rd base prospect at low-A.

To start the process a few weeks before the season ends at AA is just odd.

by Tripon on Oct 4, 2010 12:20 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah, it does seem like odd timing, but perhaps someone on the AA staff saw something in Sands that made them think he could handle it. If he could even be passable at 3B, it would be a huge boost for this team.

What?

Andre Ethier wishes he has the career Ordonez had. You could argue Ordonez is done, but comparing him to Loney?

By that rational, lets go get Jr!

by keithc13 on Oct 4, 2010 12:36 PM PDT up reply actions

I’m not arguing that the Dodgers should get Maggs now, but the Loney comparison is not even close.

Ordonez at 35 was a far superior hitter than Loney last year.

by Michael White on Oct 4, 2010 12:38 PM PDT up reply actions

2010, and 2009, and basically every year except Loney’s 2007 which is making less and less sense as time goes on.

He retired, remember.

GA, on the other hand, has not.

by KellyStephen on Oct 4, 2010 12:40 PM PDT up reply actions

Except that he’ll be 36 coming off an injury and we want him to play the outfield. Not a good upward-leaning indicator.

I’ll pass.

by KellyStephen on Oct 4, 2010 12:36 PM PDT up reply actions

I’m gonna pile on, because I typed all of this and then saw others chime in…

Really? I thought the knock on Magglio was that he was old and likely to be injured. And expensive. But if you can afford him, and if he stays healthy, he’ll hit, yes?

Loney is young, getting expensive, and can’t hit.

by Michael White on Oct 4, 2010 12:41 PM PDT up reply actions

Loney hit more HR’s had 40 more RBI than Maggs in 2009. OBP was .376 to .357.

Maggs is horrible now. So is Loney. I was just saying that their power numbers are similiar now.

by keithc13 on Oct 4, 2010 12:44 PM PDT up reply actions

Ordonez had a wOBA of .375 last year (as in right now.)

That would be good for best on the team (second best if you count Manny.) It is MUCH better than what Loney did.

For Pete's sake.

Nobody is saying Magglio is great. Not even Tommy, who suggests signing him.

They are saying that he doesn’t compare with James Loney. One player is fading but still has value. The other is sure looking like a never-was.

I dunno, I think Kelly might be right (below). The fact that he’s old and coming off an injury is enough to scare me off. If he goes down — and I gotta think he would, at least for a time — we’re in the same place we are now on offense. If the Dodgers are going to sign an outfielder, I’d prefer to spend that same money on somebody who would pretty much for sure start every day.

Well, I’m serious about “that same money.” Magglio will be cheaper because he likely WON’T start every day… but when he starts, he’ll hit. Whoever plays every day for the same money won’t hit as well as Ordonez. I’ll have to be OK with that.

Wise words - nearly 9 months ago
2008 Huff is good for them, 2009 Huff is bad for them. We won’t know until Sept but the main point is that they have not done enough to catch up with us with the free agent additions. They would need huge breakthroughs from Posey and Bumgarner to bridge the gap. That just might happen so while they basically treaded water by adding Huff and DeRosa, the real key is that they have added the best catching prospect in baseball and one of the best pitching prospects in baseball. How they do is probably more important then how DeRosa or Huff do unless they both have seasons harkening back to 2008.

A pitching staff with Lincecum, Cain, Sanchez, Zito, and Bumgarner is damn good.

There are plenty of a-holes in the entertainment industry, but they are the ones at the top of their creative game, doing daring, innovative work. They can be, and are, jerks, because people still want to work with them. The rest of us have to try to be nice to the people around us.

Definitely a late-bloomer

Martinez started off a crazy run in 1995— at the age of 32. From 1995 through 2001 Edgar posted a wOBA of greater than .400 every season. Not that he wasn’t good before that point (.424 wOBA in 1992) but that run of his offensive dominance in his years 32-38 is pretty remarkable.

by Michael White on Oct 4, 2010 2:46 PM PDT up reply actions

I once heard he had something like 20/8.5 vision and could write numbers on baseballs and call them out as they were pitched to him.

That being said, do we look at his explosion from 1995-2003, at ages 32-40, and subsequent struggles in 2004 and retirement thereafter under the Steroid Era microscope? Seeing as how 2003 is when the first test was collected, 2004 was his first down year and he retired thereafter, as unfair as it is, I think it’s only reasonable to be curious. Does he get a pass because people liked him?

LOL Loney DR Winterball

Licey kicked him off the team in 2007 he was so bad.

Not sure how to tie this into Jersey Shore

Robothal, FWIW:

Bowa, Duncan won’t return as #Dodgers’ coaches, but asked to stay in org. Schaefer has said he won’t be back. Honeycutt future unclear.

By the way, you wouldn’t like American Pickers if one of those guys ever showed up at your grandfather’s house.

BTW I don’t like it, but I keep watching.

I hope he’s right, but my expectations of him being correct are at an all-time low.

I’d love to see Macha as bench coach, Honeycutt as pitching coach, Wallach as hitting coach, Dave Roberts as first base/baserunning coach, Mark Loretta as 3B/IF coach. apparently I’m contributing to the minority-only first base coach stereotype, but whatever.

he’s also 16th in Yards/attempt. You shouldn’t have many INTs if you’re handing off and throwing screens all game.

and he’s 23rd in completion %. So the defense isn’t catching many of his passes but neither are his receivers.

Well he does have Braylon Edwards

who can’t catch shit. I still think that team is horribly overrated.

Aside from Kershaw and Billingsley, a decade’s worth of pitchers picked in the first round hasn’t yet made the desired impact on the Major League level.

Uh, besides Scott Elbert, who are the guys that were supposed to make an impact by now? Just a dumb statement.

Diggins, Miller arm troubles. Does that mean they should have made impact though?

Well other then

Chad and Clayton that is a lot of nothing so far. Based on what we have seen that could be all we get until Zach Lee starts to throw and he could just as easily end up in the Martin pile.

Silver what is wrong with the statement?

Of the true first round picks, the only pitcher that should have reasonably been expected to be a major leaguer right now is Elbert.
