Dodgers Season In Thirds: A Look At 2010 In 54-Game Increments
At the end of the season, I like to look back at the season in 54-game increments, breaking the season down in thirds.
Here's an overview of the team numbers:
| 2010 | W-L | Runs For | Runs Allowed | BA/OBP/SLG | ERA |
| 1st 54 games | 31-23 | 254 (4.70/gm) | 246 (4.56/gm) | .264/.331/.403 | 3.98 |
| 2nd 54 games |
25-29 |
221 (4.09/gm) | 219 (4.06/gm) | .254/.325/.378 |
3.97 |
| Final 54 games | 24-30 | 192 (3.56/gm) | 227 (4.20/gm) | .238/.308/.355 | 4.10 |
A few notes about the last 54 games:
- Clayton Kershaw was pretty damned consistent all season
- Ryan Theriot scored 24 runs in the final 54 games of the season...to lead the club
- Matt Kemp hit 10 home runs in the final third of the season, but also hit .214 with a .282 OBP
- James Loney was Matt Kemp with eight fewer home runs, making for a brutal final 54 games
- Kershaw, Hiroki Kuroda, Chad Billingsley, and Ted Lilly were very, very good
- Lilly led the Dodgers with 72 strikeouts over the final 54 games, followed closely by Billingsley's 70, and 68 by Kershaw
- Hong-Chih Kuo and Kenley Jansen were sublime
Here is the breakdown position by position:

Offense
In short, everyone sucked in the last 54 games except for Carroll, Ethier, and Barajas (25 games)…
Barajas was the bomb
Are catchers were kicking ass while our outfielders and 1st baseman twiddled their thumbs.
Unfortunately
As Eric summed up, starting pitching yay and offense boo—— unfortunately the offense is who is under contract next year.
1/3 of us recommend this, 1/3 of us love this, 1/3 of us wish the last 1/3 of the season never happened.
Speaking of bits of real Panther
Former USC (and current Carolina) WR Dwayne Jarrett has one more DWI arrest than NFL touchdowns!
Lane Kiffin
might have just given the most low energy interview I have ever heard a coach give after a loss, very monotone and somewhat searching for answers.
You just heard him on 710 too
It was almost like the guy was still in shock from Saturday. Look, I don’t go in for much of the rah rah stuff but dude, you need to show some energy when speaking to the media about your team.
You’ve hit on a key problem here. Not necessarily for the current team, but from a recruiting POV. He is now the face of the team. He comes across as shy, which can make people think of him as being indecisive and not a true leader. That doesn’t show well. He’s a great recruiter, but he needs to come across as more positive with more personality as the face of this team. I hope Haden and McKay start coaching and mentoring him on this.
For contrast, did anyone see Chip Kelly on College GameDay Saturday? He comes across very strong.
So, bringing this back full circle
The shy Lane Kiffin should be more like the final 54 games of the shy Chad Billingsley than the shy Jonathan Broxton? :)
and the way both teams are going, I half-expect the USC-UCLA affair to feature about 800 rushing yards.
Chip Kelly is awesome. I had lunch on the same table he was during Pac-10 media day and was pissed that there was no mayo.

Both LA teams sucked
UCLA got the victory though.
If UCLA had a legit QB, they would be in the top 25 for sure.
So the cubs just sucked worse than us.
And I agree w/your QB comment. You would think that Nuheisal and Chow would be able to recruit some real talent at that position. Head scratcher.

James Loney had a nice 85 point spread
between his batting average and OB% the last 54 games. If only his BA wasn’t .214.
It is very hard to hit
ten home runs in 186 at bats and still have an OPS barely above .700. Batista territory. Good thing Matt had that home run streak or that last 54 games could have been smelled in Ar Kansas.

She liked it, I liked it, we fucked, created progeny that we thought would someday change the world as long I was not involved in raising it, she moved to Kenya as a volunteer, was attacked by a Lion named Elsa, but was saved when a pride of meerkats intervened and drove off the old lion. Brandon (Pasadena): Nathan Eovaldi didn’t have great stats and missed a lot of the season, but he throws hard and showed flashes of brilliance during the year. Did he get any consideration, and do you see him as a future starter or reliever?
Josh Leventhal: “Throws real hard” was the first thing most anyone said about him. He has good command of his fastball, and when he’s on, the pitch is 94-95 mph with late life. Consistency with his breaking pitches will determine his future role.

Of course, after 2050 or so, we will have the ability to replace our body parts with animal parts. Dunn — the Donkey — will still be under contract, so his team will probably ask him to get spliced with an actual donkey. Sure, the hooves would really impede his ability to hold a bat, but just think — for the first time in his career, Adam Dunn will be a base-stealer.

FWIW
Jim Caliis of BA just tweeted:
Logan White as GM and he could pick the director. @WexlerRules: Who would you hire as GM/Scouting director if you owned the #Mets? If White took that job and hired Tim Hallgren, with whom does Colletti replace White?
@davidyoungtbla - The commenter formerly known as El Lay Dave.
It wasn't a prediction of candidates
it was a “who would you hire if it were up to you?”
@davidyoungtbla - The commenter formerly known as El Lay Dave.
Well one
it would depend if Hallgren was not under contract, which we don’t know. Also, for all we know, the Dodgers could move Hallgren into White’s role.
Finally, I don’t know enough about potential scouting directors to say who would be good or bad, it seems like a job that goes to someone already in the business and probably not well known.
Here’s hoping for 2 picks from Ted Lilly. Go find someone else to pitch for half his salary.
Poison kills 80 children in Uganda. Damn you, Brett Michaels! Damn you!
Or, if you’re going to pay that much to a pitcher, add it in and get someone better.
Poison kills 80 children in Uganda. Damn you, Brett Michaels! Damn you!
I mean, there aren’t many good pitchers available after Lee, so I’d probably go with my first comment of finding someone who is a bit of a dropoff but who will play for much cheaper.
That beig said, Jorge De La Rosa will probably command the same salary as Lilly but you’d be able to get him for 3-4 years.
Poison kills 80 children in Uganda. Damn you, Brett Michaels! Damn you!
I'm expecting a wolf like year for Lilly next year
so I don’t think it will be that hard. No if you want me to find someone who do what he did this year for 1/2 the price I can’t.
If Padilla had stayed healthy, it’d be half. Jon Garland had a good year. I’m probably exaggerating but even getting his production for 7-8 instead of 10 could be big on this team.
Given the choice, and having to make an actual choice, I think you could get Jake Westbrook and Chris Young for roughly what Ted Lilly will make next year. He has every right to ask for the same money that Derek Lowe got at age 36.
Poison kills 80 children in Uganda. Damn you, Brett Michaels! Damn you!
Derek Lowe's career ERA+ then was 121
Ted Lilly’s is 108. Their careers are plenty long enough that ERA+ is relatively decent measuring stick. Lowe being an extreme ground-ball pitcher helps cut down the scoring compared to Lilly being a fly-ball pitcher. And Lowe has kinda stunk it up since signing that contract, so teams will be wary with Lilly, and they aren’t offering him 4/60.
@davidyoungtbla - The commenter formerly known as El Lay Dave.
Even then
Lowe got a 60/4 deal ($/years). Lilly should not feel bad asking for a 26/2, 39/3, 52/4 type deal.
Lilly has been trending upwards in ERA+ and even had a 144 last year. His $10mil should be his salary floor this offseason, not his ceiling.

@davidyoungtbla - The commenter formerly known as El Lay Dave.

- C: PA, AVG, OBP, HR, RBI, Fielding percentage, Assists
- SP: Total games (total starts + 0.5 * total relief appearances), IP, Wins, W-L Percentage, ERA, Strikeouts
- RP: Total games (total relief appearances + 2 * total starts), IP (weighted slightly less than other categories), Wins + Saves, IP/H ratio, K/BB, ERA

Question
If a team really wanted to go balls out rebuild mode, and it was a strong draft class like the one coming up in 2011, would it make sense to deal MLB pieces for for sure Type-A guys who will seek multiyear deals like De La Rosa, Pavano, Lilly, Konerko, offer them arb with the belief they will decline, get a royal crapton of first and second round picks the next year, blow your budgetary wad on the draft, and fill your 2011 team with NRIs? Would be a quick 1 year turnaround to getting a serious influx of talent into the system and you’d be able to go back out and get MLB talent in 2012.
Just seems like there are too many Type-A guys out there on non-playoff teams for a small/mid-market team to not want to go get extra picks.
Poison kills 80 children in Uganda. Damn you, Brett Michaels! Damn you!
Also
at best you are only able to get post number 16th or in this case 18th picks and while you get the rare Mike Trouts, you are almost always going to be on a 2-3 year rebuild mode.
Finally, some teams may just want to be rid of the salary and not want anyone in return (for instance, Kornerko might not even be offered arbitration.
I think it's crazy the Dodgers still pulled 3.5mil fans
Though, as someone here mentioned yesterday, I think people here just like getting out and watching a game.

I need a receiver I can get on waivers. While I understand that you have no clue who is available in my league, shoot me a few guys that you would try for a 1 week plug in guy.
This is for anyone.
Thanks
I’ll hang up and listen.
The Moss news is BIG because with the Patriots’ bye week, I was going to plug in Jabar Gaffney as my WR2 (very risky play). But if he gets traded to Minnesota, I’ve got my guy back (to pair with Roddy White).
Waiver additions? Tough to say. Maybe Kenny Britt, now that Justin Gage is out with a hamstring problem.

Glad to see Kyle Russell was a top 20 Cal League prospect
With the end to his season in AA, I’m not sure why people are ready to label him a nothing non-prospect. Give him a full year in AA before you make your assumptions about how his career will turn out.
Also I was very glad to see Miller and Martin on the list above him. This team is going to have a lot of B- to B+ prospects (only a couple of B+ prospects likely).

Rough year, for sure. My roommate is a Padres fan, so she’s heartbroken, too (gosh, could you imagine? I think TBLA would be down a few members, permanently, if that had happened to the Dodgers).
Your boy regfarfield rocks a mean set of union jack sunglasses.
Oh, and my INCREDIBLY SMART professor was talking about pedagogical practices in class today and was trying to explain that he didn’t have an innate ability to understand music. His analogy was talking about how hitting coaches in the MLB aren’t usually the hitting greats of years long past, but more like dudes who played a few games but aren’t that good. After class, I asked him what his team was. He told me “Yankees” like he couldn’t believe I was asking (he’s a Jewish guy from NYC, I think…whoops) and then we talked about Torre for a hot second before someone had a more “important” question about Kierkegaard. Danish prick.

If it were up to Jim Callis
he’d hire White to GM the Mets.

and watching Celebrity Paranormal Project. Kind of entertaining. Has anyone seen this show on hulu.com?
Well
that is not quite true but it is a start. And this settlement (similarity like the one the McCourts will probably make some day) still has to be approved by the Court.
Tenure isn’t a constitutional right. I’m trying to get hired as a teacher, but I applaud this move. The indirect effect is that this will get a bunch of older teachers to retire as well instead of staying for one more year to get a better pension.
Also, what LAUSD does is usually followed by all the surrounding districts.
What the h@#l kinda M&%$#^r F&(@)&$n’ S&%t are you talkin’ about?
Without UTLA you would not even have a platform from which to stand on and voice such an opinion.
Thank God for Bill Lambert!

I don't have a particular dog in this fight
but the other side might read your second sentence as you saying, “that old guy who gave his life to teaching, fuck him for giving one more year so that he can survive in his retirement.”
I do know that I plan to hang on to my job until the day I can afford to retire for good, and leave not one moment sooner.

Two days without baseball
and no other sports to comment on, has made it a slow day.
But nice of you to drop by.
Over 1000 comments here today
Not too slow, really. On an in-season off-day, doesn’t it usually quiet down earlier, like it did here?

Best part about the now-done Randy Moss deal
@Jay_Glazer:
Moss will become 6th player to play 17 games in a season since bye was instituted in 1990.<\blockquote>
If he is healthy of course.
