Why no De la Rosa?

Ben (Leland Grove): Did Rubby de la Rosa get any consideration for your list?

Ian Gordon: De la Rosa was another guy praised by a couple of managers but brushed off by others. His numbers were good — 3-1, 1.41 in eight starts — but the fact that he spent more of the season in the Midwest League meant that several scouts and managers never saw him pitch in the SL. His manager, Carlos Subero, spoke at length about his about to add extra velocity late in games, and compared de la Rosa to Edinson Vlquez. That changeup is a plus pitch, too

De la Rosa was another guy praised by a couple of managers but brushed off by others.

I wonder who these “managers” are. Rubby pitched 7 IP in 6 straight games, allowing 3 runs or less in all of them. Why is that unimpressive?

7 K/9 may not be very impressive, but shouldn’t be brushed off…

by Julio Nievas on Oct 7, 2010 12:04 PM PDT up reply actions

Six straight games would be two or three opposing teams. So only two or three opposing managers saw this, and the others didn’t, don’t read the stats, and brushed him off because they didn’t see him play.

Lewis?

I thought they were using Wilson. Both Lewis and Wilson are great stories. Just think of where the Ranger rotation was last October. Then they add Harden for a shitload of money, but he fails. No problem we will give our ex closer a shot and he’s dynamite. Plus we sign this Japanese league refugee and he does the job. Then we job for the best pitcher in the AL. That is how you backfill a rotation.

Eric

I was leaving Venice when I turned on the radio last night to hear the Yankee’s trailing 3 – 0 in sixth, and my first thought was fuck, Eric is going to be all over me tonight. Then by the time I got to PCH/Topanga the Yanks had come back (again) to take the lead, and I was so torn. I want the Twins to win, but sadly I’d rather be right, so I ended up rooting for the Yankee’s. I felt dirty

by meercatjohn on Oct 7, 2010 11:48 AM PDT reply actions

I missed most of that game, so I didn’t get to experience the Twins’ lead. When I turned it on, it was already 6-4

by Eric Stephen on Oct 7, 2010 11:50 AM PDT up reply actions

it was funny

Orel was working the game and in the 6th he commented how the Yankee’s just don’t look like a team who wants to win. I thought what a BS thing to say, I hate that stuff. Nine batters later he said they now looked like a team who was into the game.

I was watching at that time, and wow did the Yankee dugout look dead when CC was up there gagging on the mound.

Not really helping out our debate

BHS (Southern California): Despite probably being ranked as the best Dodger prospect for the last few years, I remain skeptical of what kind of MLB player Dee Gordon can become? What is it about him, besides his speed, that should make me feel better about his ranking?

Ian Gordon: Two more questions, everyone. Gordon is a polarizing player, BHS. Some folks think that he’s just coming into his own — after all, Flash’s kid is still relatively new to the sport — and cite his plus makeup and projectable body as reasons for optimism. But one scout scoffed at Gordon’s physique, telling me, “He looks like a little bird out there.” Aside from his speed, though, Gordon projects as a 60 fielder and already possesses a 60 arm. So there’s that.

by bhsportsguy on Oct 7, 2010 12:20 PM PDT reply actions

Matt Garza or Jeremy Hellickson would have been my choice. James Shield was picked because he pitches well at home. My point is that I wouldn’t want to give Shield the chance to pitch twice in the first place.

So did the Cards in 2009 before the Dodgers won game 1 and 2. Everyone has a plan before they get punched.

The hell they did. Did they actually say that?

by Tripon on Oct 7, 2010 12:49 PM PDT up reply actions

Yes

from Fanhouse:

“For those that are really into numbers,” manager Joe Maddon said Wednesday in a news conference, “look into more of the deeper numbers regarding his performance this year, and he’s actually done a lot of good stuff, too. The innings, hits per innings pitched and the homers really stand out, but beyond that he’s done a lot of really good work underneath the surface.”
Maddon said that Andrew Friedman, the Rays VP of baseball operations (essentially the general manager), had made him aware of some advanced — perhaps not standard, but not unheard-of either — statistics.
Shields’ batting average allowed on balls in play (not counting strikeouts nor homers) was .344, highest in the American League. Some believe a high “BAbip” indicates bad luck, and Maddon told me he believes Shields has been unlucky.

by Eric Stephen on Oct 7, 2010 12:51 PM PDT up reply actions

But

Yes over a season, you can say that but it is just one game where we know that all those numbers may not be relevant.

by bhsportsguy on Oct 7, 2010 12:53 PM PDT up reply actions

That seems like a weak attempt to justify starting, say, John Jay over Albert Pujols because, after all, it’s only one game.

by Eric Stephen on Oct 7, 2010 12:54 PM PDT up reply actions   1 recs

No

it’s my general feeling about baseball analysis, when your sample size is a whole season, I think to some extent, it all evens out but just because Shields may have pitched better than the numbers show, it doesn’t mean that he is going to do so today. I mean he isn’t due to be lucky today with balls in play just because he was unlucky with them over the season.

by bhsportsguy on Oct 7, 2010 12:57 PM PDT up reply actions

You can use that argument to start any guy over any other guy.

by regfairfield on Oct 7, 2010 12:59 PM PDT up reply actions

Shields also gives up more homers than any other starter on the team. x-FIP would say that he’s unlucky in that regard.

Here’s a list of all the pitchers in baseball history who’ve started at least 75 games through age 22 while striking out more than a batter per inning:

Sam McDowell 9.52
Clayton Kershaw 9.29

If you lower the threshold to 8 K/9, King Felix and Dwight Gooden join the list.

Legendary.
