Dennis Mannion Out As Dodgers President
Dennis Mannion is out as Dodgers' President, leaving day-to-day operations of the team to owner Frank McCourt, per Dylan Hernandez of the LA Times:
McCourt will go back to being the head of baseball operations. General Manger Ned Colletti, who reported to Mannion over the last year, will once again report directly to the owner.
Mannion, you may remember, was asked about spending millions of dollars for bonuses on draft picks last year, and offered this gem of an answer:
You're dealing with a very fluid situation. Those millions that are potentially in play, they can manifest themselves where the opportunity is. If the opportunity is in buying more portable concession stands, then that's what you do. If the opportunity is buying some international talent that you have a very good handle on, that's what you do. In this particular world, you're making those assessments on a daily basis.
Mannion joined the Dodgers as Vice President and Chief Operating Officer in November 2007, and was promoted to President/COO in March 2009. He added baseball operations to his oversight last December.

That's what I thought.
It depends how much clout/decision making power Mannion had, but it’s not like anything is going to change this postseason.
Also, Vinny might be my favorite.

This reminds me. I need to do better research on how long shows lasted. We went in to Veronica Mars not knowing it was cancelled early. There was much gnashing of teeth.
by robotmadeofnails on Oct 8, 2010 9:39 AM PDT up reply actions
Cancelled early?
It changed formats in its third season, in that rather than one season-long mystery, it was split into thirds. But it had a last episode (and, for my money, a beautiful, fitting coda).
There was talk after the third season that the show would come back for a fourth. The show would jump ahead four years, after Veronica graduated college, and pick up with her as a young woman out on her own, hanging out a shingle for her own PI firm. But that was not picked up, and maybe that’s for the best.

In the year we were supposed to have an $80m payroll (2006), we had a $98m payroll, per Cot’s. Then it went up.
Ok.
I would think that having a sort of philosophy of limiting the payroll would still effect the people the FO office goes after, though.

Just because they missed the mark
doesn’t mean it’s not something they’re striving for. Honestly, I hope I’m wrong. But hearing that the people who run the team want to keep payroll low, most likely because of limited money, isn’t the most…heartening.
All this aside, it’s not like Frank has a Scrouge McDuck status vault of money he goes swimming in.
Leading the league in OMGs || Proud owner of a Chad Billingsley Real Doll
This all started because I was curious about the significance of Mannion’s firing. I personally don’t think it has to do with money because a) Frank doesn’t have much b) “Every owner ever wants to keep payroll low” c) my own personal belief that point b is reflected in documentation from 2006 citing a wish/desire/what have you to keep the payroll low.

Reminds me
When I was growing up, I’d have to get up very early, 5 am, to catch an early bus to school. I would listen to the early morning news, which was from the BBC. They would always give the cricket scores and I’d never understand them. “In a tight contest today, India beat Pakistan four billion to seven.” “In a blowout, Pakistan beat India 87 billion to 86,999,999,999.” It was maddening and I never got it.
Then I went to England for a wedding. They got married in a castle, and there was a pub that stayed open all night for the people who were staying there in the castle. I got more drunk than I ever have been in my life. I woke up in the morning with a splitting hangover. I couldn’t sit still. My eyes couldn’t focus to read. I turned on the TV but most shows were too loud. Then I hit on the cricket broadcast.
Now I understand cricket. It is the perfect hangover entertainment.

Teixeria has the higher wOBA, but that’s because AGon plays in Petco park in the best pitcher’s park in the majors by far.

During the summer we heard rumors that Adrian could seek an eight-year deal when he hits free agency, likely meaning that he’s looking for Mark Teixeira money. The 28-year-old has hit .288/.374/.514 with an average of just over 32 homers per season in his five years as a Padre, but outside of Petco Park those numbers jump to .303/.376/.568. He’s also considered to be one of the game’s best defenders, so the Teixeira comparisons are appropriate. About the only thing Gonzalez doesn’t do is switch hit.

It would appear, then, that the Dodgers cannot afford him.
On the one hand, that sucks. It sucks to see so much money go down the drain to players that no longer play for the team, hamstringing their current efforts to build a competitive club. A player like Gonzalez becomes available and it would be nice to see your team try to get him…
…on the other hand, the reason why the team is in such financial straits — other than the divorce — is that they put everything into the pennant pushes in 08 and 09 (and, ahem, 10). It almost worked, too — back-to-back NLCS teams, only to run into a better Phillies club. If things had worked out a little differently, the 09 team could have been a pennant winner, or, dare I say it, a champion. If we’d had a flag to fly, it would make the down years easier to take.
So, I dunno. It’s easy to look back, see that it didn’t work, and criticize. But it almost worked, and the 09 season was a lot of fun. Clearly, I have mixed feelings about this.

If Dodger fans watched their team on TV the way Red Sox fans or Yankees fans (or Mets, or Phillies fans) did, they would have a lot more money to play with. So we can blame ourselves a bit, too.

Not exactly true. The rate of which the Dodgers are paid for TV revenue won’t change due to viewership. The main draw of higher TV ratings is to use it when they renegotiate the contract.
I think his point is that
If there were higher viewership, the Dodgers could use that to form their own cash-cow cable network, a la the Sox/Yanks. As things stand, the team probably does not have the viewership to make that work, meaning they need to renegotiate with Fox or some such, and for far, far less revenue.
Now with 33% more Kavula
by Humma Kavula on Oct 8, 2010 10:17 AM PDT up reply actions
Either way. Even if they don’t own their own network, more viewers eventually translates into more cash. Even when negotiating loans, one thing that will play into that would be expected revenues from a future tv contract. Just wanted to point out that fan support plays a part in what a team is able to do.
The Rangers have less people watching their broadcast than the Dodgers, and they just signed a huge deal with FOX.
I don’t think this is as big of a issue as you think. Its not just about viewership, its also about market share, and FOX not wanting to lose more teams to independent networks. Prime Ticket basically exists because of the Dodgers, FOX would be risking a big part of their Southern California empire if they let the Dodgers go.
Any premium FOX is willing to pay on top of their baseline deal is just that, a premium. The deal terms are still dictated by revenues, which are directly correlated to viewership. Secondly, the leverage a team has in ‘going independent’ is viability, which is also determined by viewership.
Are you actually arguing that more viewers does not equal more money, either now or down the road?
I don't like giving out deals longer then 5 years

I think at some point we are going to have to make a big splash in the FA market. Gonzalez may be the player to do it on, but a number of other dominoes would probably have to fall into place. We would probably have to fill a couple of starting positions with league-minimum players like Robinson and Sands and we would probably have to do the same with 1 or 2 rotation spots. His signing really only makes sense if we also have Kershaw, Kemp, and Bills locked up for a few more years.
so would it make more sense
to trade for him, and hope he signs an extension
or
wait for him to hopefully hit FA?
"Heroes get remembered, but Legends never die."
by Tommy Blackjack on Oct 8, 2010 10:08 AM PDT up reply actions
I would personally wait. It gives us another season to evaluate Sands, Robinson, De LaRosa, Withrow and others to see who will be able assume a starting position in 2012. Best case scenario for 2012:
1. Sands shows he can handle 3B; replaces Blake.
2. Robinson continues to progress; takes over CF with Kemp moving to RF
3. De LaRosa assumes a spot in the rotation
4. Gordon has a monster season; replaces Furcal
Now, obviously all of these things aren’t likely to happen but these are the types of things that I think would need to happen for us to consider laying out that type of cash for Gonzalez.
The chances of even one of those happening is pretty slim, I think. But then again everything in baseball is hard, and even harder to predict so who knows.
Yeah, the chances are pretty slim. However, they don’t necessarily need to happen that way. If Sand and Robinson take over two OF spots and we let Ethier go then we still get the desired effect.
That pretty much means that Sands has to provide more value as an every day LF than Ethier currently does as an every day RF. How likely is that, in your opinion? More to the point, how likely is that it can happen by Opening Day 2012?
Now with 33% more Kavula
by Humma Kavula on Oct 8, 2010 10:28 AM PDT up reply actions
I don’t know if it is likely at all. It would be nice if Sands could play a passable 3B, as I feel more comfortable that he would be able to give us what Blake gives us on offense for a fraction of the cost. Plus, Ethier, Kemp, and Gonzalez is a formidable threat. The point is, if we want to add a marquee FA, we are going to need to reduce costs at several other positions.
I certainly agree with your point. To me, that underscores the big failure of the past few years: not the trades, though they still haunt us; not the FA signings, though we are still paying for them; not even the failure of the core, since the Dodgers probably couldn’t keep them together after 2012 anyway. No, the big failure is the fialure to invest in the draft, player development, and international free agents. The ML roster doesn’t look good right now, and there is very little help coming from the farm. For things to go right, they need to roll a bunch of sixes on their Yahtzee dice, as you outline above. If they’d had more and better prospects — which they could have had, for just a marginally larger investment — they would be better prepared for this situation.

What I guess has me taking a line of caution is…. that sidebar list of the Dodgers’ top prospects is going to almost entirely turn over. Two reasons why the Dodgers probably won't increase payroll to 2008 levels.
- McCourt doesn’t have access to lines of credit like he did before the credit crisis and the recession.
- The McCourts were taking huge amount of revenue from the Dodgers before the divorce. And that isn’t likely to stop in the future.
Another thought on Mannion
His real expertise was in “fan experience,” licensing, and spinning off profitable subsidiary ventures, including broadcasting. As his official Dodger bio says, with the Ravens…
Mannion oversaw all revenue streams, image, and brand-generating properties. He led and coordinated the development of more than 60 Ravens sub-brands, 12 season-long Ravens television and radio shows, and annual events…..He pioneered the Ravens’ efforts to converge Ravens programming (Rave-TV, Ravens Radio, baltimoreravens. com, Ravens Mobile-In-Zone, Ravens Podcast and Video on Demand).I’m just spitballing here, but perhaps his firing indicates that Frank has to back away from his own big plans for “brand-generating properties” for the time-being. Could this also be another sign of an extended Fox apocalypse, in order to pay off Jamie? Remember, though, that the one thing Frank always kept out of Mannion’s hands control of the DS real estate.

Remember, the court documents I believe already say that he’s funneled $4 million to his sons in exchange for their work as “consultants” on the outside-the-stadium-development plan. Either way, he doesn’t need Mannion anymore. Developing parking lots is something Frank can handle on his own. Probably even feels comforting.

The land is already leveraged to the hilt...
He can’t sell the land unless any new developer takes on the loans, some of them are tied to Dodger Stadium, some are tied to the parking lot, (like $60 million loan that the McCourt used to buy two houses and used for their living expenses)
McCourt was giving something more like $400k to his two sons. He was charging the Dodgers Properties for rent , which was around $4-5 going to Frank’s holding company.
McCourt has never really developed parking lots, the land was already paved by a real estate company when it handed over the land to McCourt after a court battle.
The firing of Mannion is just another sign that Frank McCourt doesn’t work well with others.
Charge people to park for Dodger games.

Man
I know a lot of you hate the Giants…I just wasn’t brought up with that hatred of a team, so mine is directed towards the Phillies. I gotta say, I like watching Timmy pitch.

Yep.
Hard to imagine, but if the Dodgers had taken Lincecum and the Giants had taken Kershaw, we’d love the long-haired freak and we’d be making fun of the kid’s proto-beard.

Kershaw had better looking mechanics though

He still might end up being the better pitcher
Hopefully they both have much left in their career.

One of the things I am looking forward to over the next decade is a decade’s worth of Kershaw-Lincecum matchups. Seriously, speaking as a baseball fan, the best thing that could happen is that they both go on to HOF careers.

It could be a lot of fun sitting around in my old age debating which one was better.

Since I didn’t see Kershaw’s complete game shutout, I have to go with that one as my favorite of the year.

I agree with this. I think Kershaw will probably have the longer, more productive career.

I'm sure Dodger fans hate Lincecum for 2 of the 3 reasons they hated Juan Marichal
1. He’s a Giant
2. He kicks our ass nearly every time he pitches.
but no assault against Timmy, unless you count him drilling Kemp in the ribs.

Can you imagine Lincecum beating Russell Martin over the head with a bat?

According to Fangraphs
the Dodger (qualified) position player with the highest WAR was Casey Blake. Good enough for 78th overall.
Casey Blake 2.8
Andre Ethier 2.2
James Loney 1.2
Matt Kemp 0.3
Ouch.
Is that just because almost all 3b sucked this year?

his war seems high in general for his offensive output.

It’s a lot of little things. 3B sucking the last few years, defense, and slightly better offense than you think since Blake stayed out of the double play.
by regfairfield on Oct 8, 2010 11:06 AM PDT up reply actions
Do you really believe that Casey Blake was that good of a 3rd baseman this year?
Subjectively after watching every game I cannot wrap my head around the fact the Blake is considered a better 3rd baseman then Loney is considered a 1st baseman, so I will put my hands over my ears and hold my breath until I turn Dodger blue.
Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen
He’s not mobile, but he’s really good at picking balls down the line. Since those are guaranteed doubles, that has a lot of value.
