Saturday Playoff Thread
Games don't start until 2 pm when the Rangers go for the sweep of the Rays, but we need a new thread now since my browser won't even go into the old one with over 700 comments. The playoff double header continues at 5:37 when the Twins try to snap their playoff losing streak.
In other news, Tim Wallach has reportedly signed a new deal with the Dodgers and therefore will be with the team next season.
Also, the Nationals apparently have interest in both James Loney and Matt Kemp if they become available.
UPDATE: Here is a better article on Wallach joining the Dodgers coaching staff in 2010

As secret negotiations progress between McCourt and the new Dodger ownership group, one of the key issues is retaining the services of Wallach and White.

From that link Brandon posted about Loney
James Loney, Dodgers: If he is available in a trade — some in the Nationals organization believe that he could be — look for Washington to go after him hard. He has been a consistent hitter the past three seasons with the Dodgers, averaging 12 home runs and 89 RBIs. One problem: whenever a trade is involved, look for opposing teams to ask for shortstop Ian Desmond or right-hander Jordan Zimmermann.
Loney for Zimmermann, LOL
Loney and Ethan Martin for Zimmerman
Ryan that is ;)
Seriously though, let’s do that for Jordan Zimmerman. Add whatever other non-elite (for us anyway) prospect(s) that need to get it done. So basically no Sands, Trayvon, Jansen, Withrow (I still believe), and likely Webster.
"If we hit that bull's eye, the rest of the dominoes will fall like a house of cards. Checkmate"

But I’d be fucken ecstatic if we did.

Because of how high the Nats are on Zimm or because we don’t have enough that we are willing to trade for him?

Because Loney for Zimmermann is laughable in itself.
by Julio Nievas on Oct 9, 2010 12:37 PM PDT up reply actions
That’s why i said add a bunch of prospects, just not the very top few.
Martin’s still got value, I’m willing to trade Rubby, Miller should have some good value, and there’s a few other’s who should be enticing. They might even like Gordon, who the hell knows.
"If we hit that bull's eye, the rest of the dominoes will fall like a house of cards. Checkmate"

is it really worth anything to trade Loney for anyone OTHER than a power hitter at 1st? Because otherwise I don’t see the point in trading him away. He’s consistent and is good defensively (well, he at least makes Furcal look good).

Not worst overall.
"If we hit that bull's eye, the rest of the dominoes will fall like a house of cards. Checkmate"
It all depends on the return
a) I don’t think Loney is going anywhere
b) if he does move, it probably would be for a pitcher (if a team had a power-hitting 1B, why would they want Loney? Unless it’s an absolute salary dump like Prince)
c) the replacements aren’t that easily available, but they are out there

Sounds like the basis for a Johnson/Uggla package trade.
Trade for Johnson/Uggla, you get your SP and 2B while adding roughly $11-12m to the payroll, and other than filling out a couple bench spots the offseason is done.
Then you have a top 3 in the rotation that are 26, 22, and 25 years old next year.

http://www.torontosun.com/sports/baseball/2010/10/08/15637516.html
It either has to be a bench coach, or the hitting coach. The big knock on him(By Dodgers fans anyway) was that he was too far away from MLB and that he had no managerial experience. Making him the bench coach will solve the first problem, and the 2nd issue isn’t that big of an issue since multiple teams have hired first time coaches with little managerial experience in recent years.

As for trading Loney, the only thing I’ll say right now is that I could reluctantly go along with it ONLY if the Nats have higher regard for his potential than most of you folks here. Oh well. Plenty of time to discuss later. Go Braves, go Reds, go O-Dog/Thome/Repko (while they still can)…
