I will have a far bigger reaction to, and will be far more affected by, whatever happens today, than whatever it was that happened yesterday.

Gotta say

I read the world series recap on MCC, and the author there seemed to be very reverent and well-spoken. I’m not sure why I expected the mods there to be driving the Screw You Dodgers wagon.

Dunn

first time I ever went on MLB trade rumors was last night looking for the Type A/B list and it appears the Cubs are pursuing him, whatever that’s worth. Also saw that Boras is going to ask for a Matt Holliday-like 7/120 contract for Werth.

So are we spending money or what?

I’ll be honest, the Ted Lilly signing shocked me. I really thought this was going to be another season where the payroll gets even lower, now we’re hearing that Frank wants to spend.

I really think the Giants winning the WS is a good thing for us in the long run: Frank knows the fans are pissed, now he had to watch our rivals celebrate a world championship.

We have a good, possible great 3-man rotation with Clayton, Bills, and Lilly. Are we bringing back Kuroda? Padilla? Are we really going to have a 5th starter rather than a rotating door?

And what about the offense? Is Russ coming back as catcher? Is Loney still our guy at 1B? Who’s going to play LF? Will they spend to get Crawford or Werth? MY HEAD IS EXPLODING!!

by UCLAClass05 on Nov 2, 2010 7:42 AM PDT reply actions

I really thought this was going to be another season where the payroll gets even lower, now we’re hearing that Frank wants to spend.

Thing is, the really good players are out of Frank’s price range. He may spend some, but it’ll be on marginal vets/stopgaps.

by silverwidow on Nov 2, 2010 7:44 AM PDT up reply actions

You’re probably right. The payroll may go up, but not significantly.

Frank's from Boston

He doesn’t give a rat’s patootie about the Giants. And I’m sure Ned has already called Sabean, his mentor, to congratulate him.

by David Young on Nov 2, 2010 7:47 AM PDT up reply actions

Well I'm sure the last part's true, but not sure what that has to do with anything.

That;‘d be the classy move… But I’m also pretty sure Ned and his staff don’t like seeing Giants win WS either. Not sure whether McCourt cares that much about the rivalry yet, but we do know he cares about what people think, he’s all about PR image. And if he keeps hearing from fans how ticked off they are about seeing their rival win it all, don’t you think that will at least slightly motivate him?

by underdog on Nov 2, 2010 8:06 AM PDT up reply actions

I'll believe he's motivated when I see it

I was shocked when the Dodgers resigned Lilly. I was expecting them to have a repeat of last offseason. Lilly gives me some hope that maybe more players are coming our way, but I’ll believe that when I see it too. I’m still not altogether optimistic that the Dodgers will make the necessary moves.

Fuck the Giants, fuck the Rangers, fuck this whole damn World Series.

by drulenarendes on Nov 2, 2010 8:16 AM PDT up reply actions

To be fair, yes, I think we're all in the "believe it when we see it" camp

though we may slightly define proof differently.

I want to see the team have money to spend, which is up to ownership, but it’s then up to the management to do something with it that helps the team compete. That’s when I care less what Frank feels, and more about what the staff feels.

There's no need to fear, Underdog is here! / Broncos/Dodgers/Lakers fan in Niners/Raiders/Giants/Warriors country, and damned proud of it.

by underdog on Nov 2, 2010 8:18 AM PDT up reply actions

Why were you expecting to see a repeat?

After 2009 the argument made sense. The Dodgers were returning a team which won 90+ games from a season ago. Even then, the Dodgers found that going into camp without a defined 5 starters was a big problem. Coming after a disappointing 2010, I don’t see why Ned/Frank would basically do nothing. Heck, Ned was still making ill-advised trades late last season even though the Dodgers were out of it.

by Michael White on Nov 2, 2010 8:23 AM PDT up reply actions

I suspect most fans take rivalries a lot more seriously than players or management, especially in an era where people are often on the move. Frankly I think Ned would be a jerk if he didn’t call Sabean, the guy who hired him. It’s not like he’s Al Campanis; Ned could be anywhere five years from now. As for Frank, it’s probably just one more cut in a series of death by 1000 of them.

Sounds like you had quite a night. The good thing about Auburn, the worst that generally happens is toilet paper in trees, although one year an Alabama fan wannabe stabbed some frat boys after a game.

by Little Blue Bicycle on Nov 2, 2010 8:17 AM PDT up reply actions

Very good point

You’re right. I’m sure that because we care so much about the rivalry that we project those feelings and assume that management cares as much as we do. And yeah, what a dick Ned would be to NOT call Sabean.

I think they will make some moves because as mentioned above, Frank hates bad PR and he’s had nothing but horrible PR for the past year(s). If he pries open his wallet a little, Ned makes some good trades, doesn’t sign free agent Andruw Jones to a $150 million contract, we’ll be alright.

by UCLAClass05 on Nov 2, 2010 8:38 AM PDT up reply actions

The last part was a little tongue in cheek

The point is the rivalry means way more to certain fans than it does to the Dodger front office.

I was thinking last night...

…if Ned hadn’t jumped in at the last minute, Juan Pierre probably still would have been a starting outfielder for the Giants. Maybe they still win.

by Little Blue Bicycle on Nov 2, 2010 8:23 AM PDT up reply actions

Probably, the team took measures to correct their mistakes with Zito and Rowand so they wouldn’t have let Pierre suck for a few years without replacing him.

by Michael White on Nov 2, 2010 8:25 AM PDT up reply actions

I was wondering if Torre would have stuck with Rowand and Sandoval all the way until the wheels fell off instead of making moves like Bochy did. Not that it matters now.

by delias man on Nov 2, 2010 8:26 AM PDT up reply actions

Torre would have given Panda the Matt Kemp treatment. He would have given Aaron Rowand the Garret Anderson treatment.

I don't know,

didn’t Torre also bench guys when they got cold, and rode the hot hand? (See O-Dog vs Belliard) Not always to the team’s long term benefit either. And yes Anderson was given too long. But my point is… who knows?

by silverwidow on Nov 2, 2010 7:42 AM PDT reply actions

We need to work out some trades

Ideally with Broxton and Loney. Of course their value is down right now, but we should be talking to teams like Tampa, Baltimore, ChiSox, who all potentially need a closer and a 1B and see if we can work something out with at least one of those guys.

by BFDC on Nov 2, 2010 7:54 AM PDT reply actions

If the Dodgers really wanted to build for upcoming years, they’d ask for prospects from those teams, not some quick fix.

by silverwidow on Nov 2, 2010 7:57 AM PDT up reply actions

I completely agree, but then again I wouldn’t be disappointed if we came away with a back of the rotation starter. We both know Ned’s MO here.

In the case of Broxton he is a free agent after next season anyways, so maybe we swap him for a starter just in terms of team needs. Guthrie from the Orioles comes to mind for example. He could be a #4/#5 innings eater for us. They have a bunch of young starters and not much in the ’pen

by BFDC on Nov 2, 2010 8:08 AM PDT up reply actions

by DodgerSF on Nov 2, 2010 9:10 AM PDT up reply actions

Yup, and TB is loaded with prospects so who knows trading either Loney or Broxton can be a good choice. Only problem I see is that TB decided before season ended to lower the payroll, so…. and I think Broxton is technically still in his 2 years contract? We might need to chew up some money for that huh? ==

As a Lakers fan

I can’t really rip Giants fans for rioting as much as I would, but hope they leave my city in one piece. Go riot somewhere else, like Treasure or Angel Islands.

by underdog on Nov 2, 2010 7:58 AM PDT reply actions

While all rioting is insane and we can’t blast it enough, I found Laker fans rioting to be one of the strangest instances of rioting. They had just won a championship…. the year before.

Again, I think SF “fans” are completely insane too, but it’s not even close to Laker fan rioting after winning back to back titles.

And you can and should rip Giants fans plenty for the rioting, as I’m sure you felt the same way about Laker “fans” who rioted.

by Michael White on Nov 2, 2010 8:02 AM PDT up reply actions

Yeah that was clearly a case of people looking to riot for the sake of rioting

those folks may not even have been big Lakers fans for all we know.

Anyway, yeah, I’m still pretty pissed off. I have friends in the Mission who woke up to tons of damage this morning from idiots “letting off steam.”
