Davey Lopes, Dave Hansen Officially Join Dodgers 2011 Coaching Staff
As reported last week, the Dodgers made official their 2011 coaching staff today, who will serve under new manager Don Mattingly. Newcomers Davey Lopes (who will coach first base) and Dave Hansen (hitting instructor) both played with the Dodgers, while new bench coach Trey Hillman was the former manager of the Royals. Here is the full coaching staff:
- Dave Hansen – Hitting Instructor (first season)
- Trey Hillman – Bench Coach (first season)
- Rick Honeycutt – Pitching Coach (sixth season)
- Ken Howell – Bullpen Coach (fourth season)
- Davey Lopes – First Base Coach (first season)
- Manny Mota – Coach (32nd season)
- Jeff Pentland – Hitting Coach (fourth season)
- Tim Wallach – Third Base Coach (first season)
- Rob Flippo – Bullpen Catcher (10th season)
- Mike Borzello – Bullpen Catcher (fourth season)
"I’m extremely excited about this coaching staff, which has a great combination of experience and youth that will create a positive environment for our team," said Mattingly. "We’ve been able to reach back and bring in a number of coaches with Dodger roots and that’s one of the things that was very important to us. Not just the quality of the people and the experience they bring with them, but the history of this organization – where it came from and where we want to go."

I really, really dig this staff.
Lots of guys I like, lots of guys I think will be what this particular team will need.
Maybe Hansen can come off the bench and pinch hit. ;-)

I agree!
Now i look forward to both the players, and to seeing how the coaching staff performs next season! Dodgers, 2011!
Exactly
very optimistic right now. Even with roughly the same lineup returning, I’m hopeful for a couple bounceback seasons.
Still waiting on that Loney for Upton deal and Adam Dunn signing!

yup
the Desert Dogs cap. I think that’s how they do it in the AFL. The players wear the parent club uni, and the AFL team hat.

I have to say
that I do really like the configuration of this staff. It is certainly a welcome change from the grumpy old men’s club of the last few seasons. Wallach, Hansen, and Lopes are pluses for me.
Davey Lopes
is 7 months older than Larry Bowa (65 years old).
Wallach will be 52 when 2011 season starts, Hansen will be 42.

He can and will likely travel but he’s not allowed to be in uniform or in the dugout during games.

Hmm, so he possibly has to hang out at the hotel when on the road? I would be interested to know where these guys are during games. I would think that he could be in the clubhouse, maybe helping to get a pinch hitter warmed up or something in the indoor batting cages.
I think they can go up to the press box area or some similar position
and watch the game there.

Tommy did an interview at a AFL game aired on MLBN today
he was asked if another manager will see 20 years with the same team. His answer, off the top of my head:
Only four have done it! Connie Mack owned the team, so no one was going to fire him. Tug McGraw owned part of the team. Then Alston and myself.
What I took from that is that it isn’t some old-timey fad that has been lost in time. It’s not like players who used to spend their whole lives as a member of one team because there was no free agency. Managers have always been the scapegoats, so to stick with one team for so long is a reflection of prolongued, timely success and not losing for more than a year or two in a row.
My life has a great cast, I just can't figure out the plot.

Thanks for the tip. We’re flying into SFO and purposely not renting a car so we can take BART, muni, trolleys and walk wherever we need to go. We’ve almost planned out the whole trip to include the SF Ballet Nutcracker performance, the exploratorium, the wharf/Pier 39. Is there anywhere else some hip young 20-somethings should be going?
My life has a great cast, I just can't figure out the plot.
You should atleast walk through the SF Chinatown at the very least. It is the most interesting N.American Chinatown I have been to. There are some great dumpling places there, but sadly it has been a decade since my last trip there so I don’t remember any names.
Well I’m going regardless. My gf spent a lot more time in the city than I did, so it was her idea to see the exploratorium. I’ve mostly only ever seen Pier 39, SFSU’s shithole baseball field, the airport and the SFG’s shithole baseball field.
My life has a great cast, I just can't figure out the plot.
Nutcracker is a must see, exploratorium is fraking fantastic, the wharf is the one tourist spot that I’m still down with but Pier 39 is nothing more than a mall. Stick to the true wharf a few F stops north of there. A boat tour of the bay is a good idea, Jazz at Yoshi’s in the Fillmore district, stop at La Boulangerie (my old bakery), SFMOMA is always worth a trip, There’s this really cool tiki bar called The Tonga Room that is called “Pirates of the Caribbean for grown ups”
by Josie Becker on Nov 22, 2010 12:44 PM PST up reply actions
oh, and we’re going to Alcatraz because I’ve seen it from Pier 39 far too many times without actually going.
I disliked Pier 39 because, as you say, it’s nothing but a pumped up strip mall with restaurants.
Jazz sounds fun, but we’re skipping the MOMA. We both like art and museums, but something about MOMA/MOCA’s pisses me off. You don’t put three blank canvases up on a wall and call it art.
My life has a great cast, I just can't figure out the plot.
fair enough, there’s a cartoon museum on mission st. not too far from the MOMA, but it’s kinda small.

Obviously it’s not a perfect parallel, but there are some similarities between what happened with Manny and Favre: An aged, disgruntled superstar goes to a new team, and all re-energized, gives the best performance of his career, only to come up a little bit short of ending up in the championship round. With the entire fanbase clamoring for him to come back for another shot, he finally returns- but not before a drama-filled preseason of back-and-forth with the front office. A scandal hits early in the season, which most people don’t care a whole lot about, so long as the guy can still play…but as it turns out, he can’t, or at least not to the same level. Tired of the whole thing, the fanbase is ready to move on.
All that being said, I still think Manny’s second go with the Dodgers will look better than Favre’s with the Vikings. After all, we’ll always have Bobbleslam, as well as that home winning-streak record to start the season.
Or quit immediately.

Of course the coach is not going to take the number from the player. Lopes, in his post-Dodger career, wore 11 and 12 as a player when 15 wasn’t available. 11 is Manny (Mota) so that’s taken, so maybe he’ll wear 12 this go ’round.

Twas a very impressive night for the guy. I don’t see the point in keeping BDavis and Kaman at this point. Kaman I love but isn’t he a free agent soon? From what I understand, this coming draft isn’t all that talent-filled, and the Clippers will probably have a high pick regardless, but if they could trade Davis and Kaman for like, Gallinari or Curry and a 1st rounder, wouldn’t it be worth it?

I didn’t watch a ton of Clippers action before Kaman got hurt. Was his poor play just a matter of not adjusting properly to the Blake Griffin whirlwind down low (similar, sort of, to Elden Campbell not playing as well alongside Shaq)?
by Eric Stephen on Nov 22, 2010 12:48 PM PST up reply actions
Not really, his shot was just not dropping. The ball was just rimming out for no reason so he tried to adjust by abandoning his jumper and creating (by dribbling) which is a disaster. He actually started to pull it together when he got hurt (he looked great in the Utah game.)
Kaman is the perfect partner for Griffin because he can shoot the jumper and give BG a ton of space.

BD is untradeable. Besides, he’s worth more to the Clipper than what he’d fetch in a trade (he’s still better than Bledsoe.)

Here's how dumb I am
I had the game on in the background, and the score was in the 90s near the end of the 3rd quarter. I thought it was the end of the game, and was shocked at the lack of urgency by the Clippers to try and comeback! Griffin already had like 33-12-5 or something similar, so I was preparing the game recap for SBN LA, but then I realized it was nowhere near over.
by Eric Stephen on Nov 22, 2010 1:00 PM PST up reply actions
Steve mentioned a strange thing
That the rookie scoring record has been broken 3 of the past 4 years by the Clippers. Thornton broke it in 07/08, Gordon in 08/09 and Griffin in 10/11.
That’s why I don’t get too warm and fuzzy about youth movements. Clips (from management on down) needs to demonstrate an actual plan.

Caracter plays more than
Sasha (though that will change once they get someone to replace Ratleff and Bynum comes back)
Ahh, Sasha. On a team with so much depth, I’m most frustrated that Sasha gets any minutes at all.
Let’s trade him to the Heat for a 2nd rounder and call it even. I hear they need a shooter.

i wouldn't be surprised if does get traded

Contract + lack of any discernable skills + enough guys playing well that he won’t get enough time to show improvement.
Any of those three I suppose could be a roadblock.

if he was bringinga long hot famous women to games, that’d be all well and good. Once he is bringing along hot famous wife, she’s not as fun to look at.

Since almost none of the fans are getting anywhere with any of them, why does the marital status matter? Looking is looking.
@davidyoungtbla - The commenter formerly known as El Lay Dave.
I don’t fantasize about being with married women. There’s an episode of scrubs that fits me where JD ignores any woman with a wedding ring. As soon as they take the ring off, they appear. As soon as the ring goes back on, they’re invisible to him.
I just can’t look at a married woman with any sort of appeal. I realize there are some very, very hot married women, and I acknowledge that they are attractive, but it’s just not the same.

That’s a very different thing than fantasizing.
@davidyoungtbla - The commenter formerly known as El Lay Dave.
Sure
for example, if you ever bring your lady friend to a TBLA event, it would be ok for me to notice how attractive she is, but it would be breaking the guy code to fantasize about her.
Do I have that right? :-)
@davidyoungtbla - The commenter formerly known as El Lay Dave.
Yep. It’d be polite to make a comment and have conversation, but making advancing gestures gets you in trouble.
At least as far as I understand guy code.
In the Sasha case, I think you get to grab Maria’s hand, say “Nice job, Sasha” and then go back to talking to him about why he can’t hit an open jumper.

Yea but Blue Moon was originally its own micro-brew and Coors just purchased it. Just like Lienenkugels was its own brewery and was purchased by Miller.
Then, Budweiser tried to come out with Shock Top to compete with Blue Moon and Lieney’s Sunset Wheat.
I still say Shock Top is better
LAST SEASON, I led this team in ninth-inning doubles in the month of August!
Wikipedia may be wrong
but it disagrees with you.
Blue Moon, a Belgian-style witbier brewed by the Molson Coors Brewing Company in Golden, Colorado, was launched in 1995. …. Originally called Bellyslide Belgian White, it was created by Keith Villa, a brewer at Coors Field’s Sandlot Brewery (the onsite brewery owned by the Molson Coors Brewing Company). For the record, I’ve drunk many a Blue Moon at Dodger Stadium.
@davidyoungtbla - The commenter formerly known as El Lay Dave.
I haven’t tried Blue Moon, but if it’s actually good, that’s a good thing. We need the beer giants in America to make better beer.
I don’t know for sure, but I would imagine that the microbrews have very thin margins. (Maybe a brewer like Sam Adams isn’t living quite so much on the edge.) Frankly, the big brewers have such a strangehold on the market and the USA has such antiquated/weird distribution laws that we should be surprised that microbrews exist at all. I would think that it would not take very much for one’s favorite to suddenly go under.
The problem then is that you may get shuttled from a rich, tasty beer into, say, Bud Light…. but if the giants see a viable microbrew market and turn out a good product, what’s so bad about that?

The markets seem to work
(Sam Adams is hardly “micro” these days, are they?) The beer giants still make money hand over fist and many microbreweries have been in business for a long time. Seems like every company has found their niche, large or small.
@davidyoungtbla - The commenter formerly known as El Lay Dave.
They claim to only have 0.9% of the US beer market, but a) that could be 0.9% of the alcohol industry instead, and b) that’s still a huge amount of money each year.
Also, 312 in Chicago >>>>>> any other beer you will ever drink. Period.
You are 98% chimp.
I think that actually is the beer market. I believe — and I’m looking for stats to back this up — that 1 in 2 beers consumed in the USA is an Anheuser-Busch (now InBev) beer and over 90% are one of the big two (InBev, MillerCoors).

Is this like a Coke Pepsi thing? Where a lot of the soda being drunk is not Coca-Cola or Pepsi, but it is Coke or Pepsi products?
I don’t always drink beer, but when I do, I drink Blue Moon, Fat Tire, New Castle and Stella, so I think I contribute to this statistic.
Lately, I’ve been drinking almost exclusively Jack and Coke (Jameson and Coke when the Jack is out), except for one day last week when I was really sad. That 12 of Bud Light never went down so fast.

Lopes and Kent
are tied with the all-time Dodger franchise record for home runs in a season with 28 (Kent hit 29 in 2005 but he hit 1 while playing first base that year)
Seriously
I know I love Phil’s personal stories on TBLA as much if not more than his minor league wrap ups. Jon Weisman does great Dodger stuff but his tales from his life ring so true to me, here’s another example.

As much as I know the ace thing bothers people
until someone wins a game that is seen to be important, you will hear this line tossed out there and frankly, WAR just doesn’t do it for them.
An Ace is worth
four points in Bridge. Three for King, Two for Queen, One for Jack. Of course that’s a rough guide and subject to singleton/doubleton counts.

Hearts is most assuredly not a “better game” than bridge, in the same way that ordinary chicken soup is not a better dish than a luxurious chicken dish prepared by Thomas Keller.
That said, you can’t have Keller every day, and it’s expensive, and maybe too rich and bad for you, and there’s nothing wrong with chicken soup, which is really, really good and sometimes just what you’re looking for.

Oh, you didn’t give it a fair chance. Bridge is really complex and only shines once you really know the bidding conventions and have enough practice to play out the hands better.
You may say you have no desire to do all that learning to play this game, and that is fair.

I never had the drive
to learn bridge well enough to play bridge seriously. If I’m Marty’s partner and I have 3 or more spades, do I jump to a game contract of 4 spades?
@davidyoungtbla - The commenter formerly known as El Lay Dave.
It’s been a long time since I played, but…
…assuming Marty is playing “strong twos,” then the quality of your hand should determine your bid. I believe that 4S means you have a weak hand and should not play more than game. I believe that 3S, the lower bid, invites slam.
But like I say, it’s been 10 years or more since I’ve played, so hell if I know.

You can generally assume I got a weak hand.
Bridge is the sort of game you have to play regularly to stay sharp on. Who’s got time for that?
@davidyoungtbla - The commenter formerly known as El Lay Dave.
Hmm. I should look this up… but I believe that a 2S open requires a reply. I believe a weak (minimal) hand, even zero pts, should play at game — and you might go down.
When I played, I would often underbid my hands, thinking it was better to make a weaker contract than go down. This is not always the case. You can lose a lot of rubbers that way.
