Report: Dave Hansen Joins Dodger Coaching Staff As Hitting Instructor

Dave Hansen will reportedly be joining the Dodger coaching staff as a hitting instructor (Photo: Matthew Stockman | Getty Images, 2001)

This was the Dodger lineup on July 6, 1995 in Atlanta, against Greg Maddux at the peak of his powers:

  • DeShields 2B
  • Offerman SS
  • Mondesi RF
  • Piazza C
  • Wallach 1B
  • Kelly CF
  • Hansen 3B
  • Gwynn LF
  • Candiotti P

Both Tim Wallach and Dave Hansen started that day, the last time they started in the same lineup as Dodgers. Both appear to be in the 2011 Dodger coaching lineup for 2011. Wallach appears a lock for the third base coaching job, and per Jon Paul Morosi of Fox Sports, Hansen joining the Dodgers as a hitting instructor is a "done deal." Jeff Pentland and Hansen will be hitting coaches, but, "It’s not clear whether Pentland or Hansen would be designated as the primary hitting coach."

Hansen is sixth all-time with 138 pinch hits, including a record seven pinch home runs in 2000. Hansen served as hitting coach for Double A Mobile in the Diamondbacks' system in 2007, then was Arizona's minor league hitting coordinator for the past three seasons.

Nothing has been announced yet by the Dodgers, as they are waiting until the full coaching staff is assembled. In other words, once Davey Lopes gets hired as first base coach, the other coaching assignments will become official.

*****

In other news, Jon Miller and Joe Morgan are out at ESPN Sunday Night Baseball, with the great Dan Shulman and Orel Hershiser replacing them on the TV  team, per Richard Sandomir of the New York Times.

Question

do you think the abilities of the hitting coach matter as much as what type of career he had?

I guess the real question is, if Don Mattingly and Dave Hansen have exactly the same abilities as a hitting coach, would players be more likely to listen to Don instead of Dave?

What if we get Joe Morgan as first base coach?

Yay, I always liked him

I wonder if the Dodgers really will sign Lopes, can they afford his asking price? Doubt there’ll be an Old Team discount.

I have to think the difference between what he wants and what he was offered is somewhere in the $100k-$400k range. If that’s the difference between having a good running game versus the 2010 Dodgers, sign me up.

I would think a big part of it is a fit with the rest of the coaching staff.

Mattingly, Wallach, Hansen, Lopes…. One of those is not like the others.

Maybe but that sure seems like an all around better staff than 2009 imho.

I enjoyed the hell out of them

even if they get very repetitive after awhile. But they’re very clever, fun with word play, memorable characters, and has a fun Edward Gorey esque ghoulishness that is pleasing. I really don’t put them as that similar to Harry Potter (though I love them both) in that they are not as densely plotted and have a different feel. But both are full of dark arts. ;-)

The easiest way to post a pic

is to copy the location of the pic (http whatever whatever), click the icon that looks like a little pic of a tree (between the subject line and the text of your post), then paste it into the dialog window that appears.

LF JERRY SANDS
DODGERS
Team: Double-A Chattanooga (Southern)
Age: 22
Why He’s Here: .301/.395/.586 (151-for-502), 35 HR, 28 2B, 5 3B, 93 RBIs, 102 R, 73 BB, 123 SO, 18-for-20 SB
The Scoop: The Dodgers’ 25th round pick in 2008 from Division II Catawba (N.C.), Sands’ career got off to a sputtering start, but he learned to shorten up his stroke and had one of 2010’s best breakout seasons. Sands blitzed Midwest League pitching in the season’s first half, belting 18 home runs in 69 games for low Class A Great Lakes before a promotion straight to Double-A in June. Sands’ average dropped off against Southern Leaguers, but his discerning eye at the plate didn’t go anywhere, nor did his power. Sands hit another 17 homers after his promotion, enough to finish fourth in the SL for the entire year and tied for third in the minors with 35.

Reliever or starter doesn't matter

From http://www.baseball-reference.com/bullpen/Rookie_of_the_Year_Award

Currently a player is considered to be a rookie, and thus eligible for the [ROY] award, if the player has accumulated in prior major league seasons:

* Fewer than 130 at bats or
    * Fewer than 50 innings pitched
    * Fewer than 45 days on the active roster, excluding time on the disabled list, in military service, or time when the rosters are expanded (currently after September 1)

IIRC

lots of ground balls. He may not be a good fit for us anyway. Raffy’s error totals will go up even higher. How a player gets rated so highly defensively for having a strong arm and no control is beyond me. I know he was great when he was younger, but let’s be honest here, sometimes it feels like his arm gives away more outs than it saves.

Garland

is a innings-eater than has a career 104 ERA+ and puts up something like that pretty consistently. That has value down at the 4/5 spot in the rotation. If the deal is reasonable, I can be ok with that. It isn’t exciting or sexy, but it can be a good move. Esp. if Kuroda is signed as the 3 starter first.

Thanks all

ain’t no thang, fish in the see, greener grass (Lambo looks up), blah blah blah, crisis over.

It’s a big deal, but life goes on. I’m not gonna go buy bonbons a snuggie and the Dr. Phil seasons over a girl. I’d only do that if we traded Kershaw.

I did, however, listen to Green Day this morning to cheer me up because NOTHING is ever as bad as Green Day makes it sound.

"Save that for the girl chat rooms. No here cares that you are sentimental and sweet. Jose [sic] already passed on you, Dodger SF is having a mid 20’s relationship crisis living in a town where she can’t love anyone because they are either gay or Giant fans, Maddz is stuck in Theology hell, and Teal is married. Not sure what is up with Connector. And my nieces are off limits. Sporky hates you because you adorn the cover of Jon’s book."

Sheeyit :(

Sorry G. Wimmen… grumble… (present company excepted of course.) I guess watching 500 Days of Summer won’t help much (that’s what I did last night). Definitely distract yourself with the bros as much as possible.

Dude

That’s a bad break. Obviously blind-sided you, which sucks. On the practical front, guess you’ll be changing the profile picture again?

I was planning a road trip to Arizona with my ex and had booked the hotel 3 days before she broke up with me, kinda makes you feel worse :/

My mom told me a cool story yesterday

She’s actually told me before, but she was a member of something called the “Dodger Boosters” in the 70s. She followed the team to San Diego and San Francisco quite a few times she said. She met some of the players too.

Some of the names I remember her mentioning:

Steve Yeager(she also met his wife and kids)
Steve Garvey
Bob Welch(she has his autograph on a parking stub)
Pedro Guererro(she has a picture of her and him when he was a rookie)
Manny Mota(he was a translator for Pedro)

I just thought that was cool

Serious Trade Proposal

James Loney for Carlos Quentin.

Quentin is reportedly on the non-tender bubble as he is oft-injured and plays horrible defense.

Maybe a change of scenery would benefit both of them.

by BFDC on Nov 9, 2010 7:52 AM PST reply actions

Real quick reaction: Yes.

by kinbote on Nov 9, 2010 7:55 AM PST up reply actions

I like it. Does Quentin play 1B or LF for us?

by silverwidow on Nov 9, 2010 7:56 AM PST up reply actions

Not idea if he can play 1B so I figured LF

and rest him on days we play in parks with larger LF areas to cover. Dodgers stadium is somewhat forgiving to bad LFers.

Dodgers stadium is somewhat forgiving to bad LFers.

But not right fielders? The field is symmetrical. The only thing that changes is the LF has the shortest OF throws and the RF has the longest. The range problem is the same.

by G.Scott on Nov 9, 2010 8:27 AM PST up reply actions

Range problem is the same

but on a grounder or liner into the corner, its much easier for the LF. How many times did we see Manny basically jog over to the corner, pick up the ball, and lob it in and still limit a guy to a double. You’ve got to be a little more athletic and quick to the ball in RF.

by BFDC on Nov 9, 2010 8:39 AM PST up reply actions

but it’s the exact same distance. The only difference is that a RH RF would have to field and turn, whereas a LH RF can grab and go. Ditto for LH LF turning and RH LF’s grabbing and throwing a la Manny.

Also, Manny would jog because a) full speed isn’t that much faster, and b) it was a double anyway so why hurry. keep the man from advancing and movie on.

by G.Scott on Nov 9, 2010 8:56 AM PST up reply actions

Its the same distance to get to the ball

but not for the throw. In LF, you have the leisure of taking your time to hit the cut-off or just toss it to 3B.

by BFDC on Nov 9, 2010 9:19 AM PST up reply actions

Quentin played in 131 games last year.

This is a no-brainer. Absolutely.

by Michael White on Nov 9, 2010 8:08 AM PST up reply actions

Agreed

So his health is good these days? That was my worry with him… But his price is lower than it has been in awhile… Sheeyit maybe can get him for even less than Loney. Broxton + and a prospect? ;-)

by underdog on Nov 9, 2010 8:45 AM PST up reply actions

Ouch

saying Broxton is far enough below Loney to still require an additional prospect.

I think we should trade Loney, Broxton and 2 prospects for Beckham and Quentin. You know ChiSox are looking for a closer.

by G.Scott on Nov 9, 2010 8:57 AM PST up reply actions

Not a bad idea and I would probably fall on the side of yes, but I would kinda like to see the team get more athletic in the OF, not less.
