Dodgers 2011 #12 Prospect Chat

It was an extremely close race between Ivan De Jesus, Garrett Gould, and Jonathan Garcia, but in the end it was Garrett Gould who came out on top.  His youth and potential must have won people over.  I’m guessing that all of the remaining votes are going to be close as there are a lot of players deserving of the final 9 spots in the TBLA top 20 prospects.  Refer to the left sidebar of the website for the TBLA ranking thus far.

I added a ton of names last round, so I’m not including anybody new this time.  However there are at least a few more guys that I’m going to add before we finish our voting.

To make it obvious for those not reading the whole article, Click Here To Vote.

As always, use this thread to talk about the voting and other things, and only use the other Fanpost to submit your votes.

The round 12 candidates (ages as of 2011 opening day):

Jonathan Garcia (19.25 years old) OF – Garcia played the entire 2010 season as an 18 year old and posted some very solid stats.  The only caveat to his .305 average and 10 homers is that he did most of his damage at home in the Raptors hitter friendly park.  He’s a little undersized at 5’11", but plays solid defense and at 19 years old he still could still hit a growth spurt.

Scott Elbert (25.5 years old) LHP – Battled personal problems and injuries in 2010, but the lefty is still just 25 and has nasty stuff when he is able to get it over the plate.  According to a recent interview, it sounds like he will be strictly a reliever in the future.

Kyle Russell (24.75 years old) OF – Best known for his plus power and his strikeout totals, most prospect hounds either love him or hate him.  Russell dominated the California League before getting promoted to AA where he struggled initially before hitting a hot streak over the final month of the season.  Kyle is also a solid defender with a very good arm in right field.

Nathan Eovaldi (21 years old) RHP – Throws gas, but has never recorded particularly high strikeout numbers.  According to Charlie Hough, the low strikeout totals are due his poor command.  Had a mediocre season in 2010, and was limited due to a mid season oblique strain.  He is still being groomed as a starter, although it has been rumored that consistency with his breaking pitches will determine his future role.

Ivan De Jesus Jr (23.75 years old) 2B – A broken leg cost him virtually all of his 2009 season, but De Jesus responded pretty nice bounce-back year in 2010.  Hit .296 with 7 homers, although it should be noted he played his home games the very hitter friendly stadium.  He doesn’t really have a plus skill, but seems to hold his own in most aspects of the game and is still just 23 years old.  He is basically limited to 2B now on an everyday basis, although he could probably play enough shortstop to fill the role of a middle infield utility player.

Brian Cavazos–Galvez (23 years old) OF – After an outstanding 2009 season, BCG got off to an extremely slow start with the Great Lakes Loons.  By the time 2010 season was over, however, Cavazos-Galvez had put together one of the best all around seasons of any Dodger minor leaguer.  He hit .318, smacked 18 homers, stole 43 bases, and drove in 77 runs.  The negatives about BCG are that he was a little bit old for LoA, and that he isn’t a very strong outfield defender.

Matt Magill (21 years old) RHP – Magill surprised a lot of people with his great 2010 season, and even led the minor leagues with a .194 opponents’ batting average.  Also had a 3.28 ERA, a 1.10 WHIP, and had 9.6 strikeouts per 9 innings as a 20 year old.  Some scouts describe his stuff as fringy, although throws in the low 90’s and has a slider that was too much for the Midwest League hitters.

Ralston Cash (19.5 years old) RHP – 2nd round pick in the 2010 draft had a solid debut in the Arizona Rookie League.  His fastball hits 94 but sits in the lower 90’s with some movement, and he has two other potentially above average pitches (curveball and changeup).

Joc Pederson (18.75 years old) OF – The Dodgers went way over slot to sign their 11th round pick in the 2010 draft because they loved his athleticism.  While he has 5 tool potential, none of the 5 tools have a particularly high ceiling.  He only had 12 plate appearances for the Arizona Dodgers.

James Baldwin (19.5 years old) OF – The son of the former major league pitcher, Baldwin is an exciting young player due to his speed and athleticism.  He initially struggled in his professional debut, but then made adjustments and was very good for the final month of the 2010 season.  He is still very raw, but some scouts believe he has the potential to one day become a 5 tool prospect.

Jake Lemmerman (21 years old) SS – After a monster season with the Raptors this past year, Lemmerman was named as the Pioneer League MVP.  In 259 at bats, Late Night had a .363 average, a 1.044 OPS, 12 homers, and 47 RBI’s.  He also did all this while playing the premium position of shortstop, and coming out of college he was described as a solid defender at the position.

Leon Landry (21 years old) OF – The Dodgers 3rd round pick in the 2010 draft, Landry had a great professional debut with a .349 average and a .909 OPS.  He drew comparisons to Andres Torres from the Ogden Raptors radio announcer, who also described him as a gap hitter.  However, Baseball America says he could top out with a .280 and 15 homers per year.  He covers a lot of ground in the outfield, although he has a below average arm.

Garcia again

then Landry, Lemmerman and Baldwin in that order.

Garcia is the man with the plan!

Will probably go Joc Pederson, James Baldwin, or Leon Landry.

De Jesus

but I considered voting for Russell.

They are very similar players ;)

I’m truly surprised to see DeJesus sinking so low.

by Little Blue Bicycle on Nov 9, 2010 8:22 AM PST reply actions

Yeah, at this point in the rankings, if he is falling behind guys who were just drafted this year or last and he just finished AAA, do we really want him playing for us?

I voted for him because if he falls much further, I just don’t think he would be worth having in the discussion.

by OB12 on Nov 9, 2010 8:28 AM PST up reply actions

I admit that he’s not the prospect he was before the injury, but I have to think it’s more a function of his not getting called up due to the alleged behavior issues. But hopefully that was a wake-up call more than a final judgment.

by Little Blue Bicycle on Nov 9, 2010 8:31 AM PST up reply actions

I don’t think he’s sinking because he’s fallen off. I think he’s sinking low because when you put him up next to any of the guys on this list, it’s a coin flip. I just happen to like the younger position players more than the guy putting up a .740OPS in ABQ.

On a side note, IDJJ looks like Carlos from The Benchwarmers.

When he’s drawing comparisons to Alex Cora, it’s hard to throw the guy a vote.

by regfairfield on Nov 9, 2010 8:51 AM PST up reply actions

Depends

1) Depends on if that’s a fair comparison, some would argue yes, some think he has more offensive potential
2) Cora’s had a 12 year Major League career, if your 12th rated prospect is “only” going to have that, I’d argue that’s nothing to scoff at.

Sure a 12 year career is great but when we could probably get better production by throwing a free agent 2-3 million, it’s hard to care.

DeJesus is much more likely to see the bigs than Garcia, but at this point it’s hard to see DeJesus not being completely replaceable.

by regfairfield on Nov 9, 2010 8:56 AM PST up reply actions

is that true?

Doesn’t DeJesus at 400,000 have a huge value jump over the Theriots at 2.5 Million? The on field production may be replaceable but the saving that can be put toward another position would seem to have some value.

though I still worry about his health, and his range in the OF, since as was said in prev thread we need to get better on D there, not worse. But still, hmmm. Hmmmmm!

Toss him a bigger glove and let him play first base.

by Michael White on Nov 9, 2010 8:55 AM PST up reply actions

I am down with this. It doesn’t look like he has ever played 1B, but I think he could handle it if they transitioned him during ST. He is still going to be young at 28 and he has been a pretty consistent power bat.

Are the White Sox for sure going with Flowers as their catcher? I’m wondering if they would try to poach Russell Martin from us instead. Much like Renteria, if Ned signs A.J. Pierzinski I might find a billboard to perch upon.

I have to vote DeJesus in the vote thread because

I didn’t vote in last one and think he doesn’t deserve to drop this far. He could be starting for LA next year at some point, which could say more about the team than hm but still, he was pretty highly rated before the injury and seems pretty solid to me.

So it’ll be DeJesus and then Garcia.

by Julio Nievas on Nov 9, 2010 8:49 AM PST reply actions

Garcia

Garcia has tons of upside and only 19 yrs old..looks like a young Pedro Guerrero (for those who remember)..5"11"-190# someone who has rifle arm and play good D in Rf for many years. Someone who cold hit .290 and hit 25+ hrs..he has short compact swing.
Definitely more pot. than EMartin..who at best is AJ Burnett. and more likely a RP.

You could see 500 Days of Summer for how that can be handled

eventually it can work, after some pain (but unlike the movie the painful awkward part usually lasts much longer.) But my advice is usually, the friends part comes later, but the line must be drawn completely for awhile because it can be too awkward and painful and people can get mislead and hurt and jealous. But sometimes you need to stay in communication for awhile at least, or it’s even worse.

would we trade for Quentin if he is a non tender candidate? Do the White Sox have any outfielders left other then Rios and Pierre, with Manny, Quentin, Andruw Jones being free agents? Can they really afford to non tender Quentin?

Anyway I’d be down for Quentin, always liked his game. This guy Jones also whacks LHP, man what a 2nd half he had last year. If we are going to pay him why not actually get some production from him.

My thought is that it secures our position. No need to negotiate or bid and the Dodgers are only losing a guy who they would non-tender anyway. It takes away the uncertainty.

by Michael White on Nov 9, 2010 9:17 AM PST up reply actions

But they aren't going to non - tender Loney

by silverwidow on Nov 9, 2010 9:20 AM PST up reply actions

I think Martin is on the bubble

but I don’t think the Dodgers are mulling non – tendering James Loney, I think only bloggers are doing it but I could be totally off base. There is the possibility that Mattingly has told Ned, that Loney has gone as far as he can go and that they should cut bait and get something else but my feeling is that Mattingly is in Loney’s corner and still feels he can become a productive enough offensive first baseman to be worth the contract.

Set aside the guys Ned won’t trade, Kemp included I think, and those he can’t move, and you’ve only got Loney and Broxton as movable, major league-ready pieces. Which is why I think they might well be traded, but not non-tendered.

I certainly wouldn’t complain either, though I would rather sign one of the big name hitters.

Lee is a stud, but it would indicate that management still thinks the problem is pitching (like they did at the deadline last year) when the problem is hitting.

by Michael White on Nov 9, 2010 9:52 AM PST up reply actions

But the problem IS pitching

when you don’t have a full rotation.

This feeds my theory that Ned not saying how much payroll will go up is a ruse to not let his rivals/agents know how much money they can ask for.

Hell, the divorce is a negotiating tool if you use it right.

I wonder when the last time we had 3 lefties in the opening day starting rotation was.

I do, however, think that if Lee and Lilly pitched in the same series, Lilly would get TATTOOED because he’s basically Cliff Lee with less velo.

I voted De Jesus again

I know nothing about anything, but it sure seems like the lessons of last season’s prospect class is Call Me When You Hit AA.

Maybe De Jesus’s ceiling is in fact Alex Cora, and maybe that is in fact not impressive. Still, the fact that he is very likely to reach that ceiling has to count for more than a kid who mashed in Rookie ball, even if the kid was just 18 years old.

I like Garcia. I’ll vote for him next round. But De Jesus’s proximity to the majors and likelihood to reach his ceiling have to count for quite a bit. He is a better prospect than #12.

by Humma Kavula on Nov 9, 2010 10:29 AM PST up reply actions

Whether I vote for Link in a top 15 spot is maybe entirely dependent on whether he is being groomed as a starter or as a reliever.

That may sound funny from a guy who was willing to vote for Kenley Jansen #1, but Jansen overwhelmed me; in my opinion, Jansen’s performance forced a #1 vote even though he is just a reliever. Link’s does not, in my opinion, and here, at the back end of the top 20, I might be prepared to shift focus away from my preference for guys who have proven something and towards guys with higher ceilings in the lower leagues.

Still, if Link is to be tried as a starter, he can provide a lot more value.

Now with 33% more Kavula

by Humma Kavula on Nov 9, 2010 10:23 AM PST up reply actions

Also

I think I’d be voting on the 20 year old (Solano) in AA over any other relief pitcher in the system since they are all 25 or so, if I was so inclined to go with a relief pticher, which I’m not.

You can be (incompetent and a nice guy), you can be (competent and an asshole), but if you are an (asshole and incompetent), your only future is to be Keith's boss otherwise you are unemployable

by meercatjohn on Nov 9, 2010 10:25 AM PST up reply actions

If Link and Solano’s ceiling is middle reliever, and Link has tasted the show, isn’t he more likely to reach his ceiling, irrespective of his age?

@davidyoungtbla - The commenter formerly known as El Lay Dave.

by David Young on Nov 9, 2010 10:28 AM PST up reply actions

Because some middle relievers are better than others?

Don’t see why Link should get rewarded for being a 1-2 years ahead of Solano in the system when he is six years older.

Indeed, Solano is so far ahead of Link (who didn’t get to AA until age 24) that you can’t even compare their production at respective ages.

One of the things I remember about that trade was that the LA newspapers were all over it. I didn’t think we’d be able to pull it off (Mondesi was grousing about a new contract and Green was a budding superstar), but we did. For my money, that’s one of the best Dodger trades I can ever remember.

Theriot lost an arbitration hearing last year with the Cubs, receiving the team offer of $2.6 million and not the $3.4 million he was seeking. Arbitration-eligible again this year, Theriot figures to be looking for something close to $4 million, which makes him a threatened non-tender candidate. The top Minor League candidate at the position is Ivan DeJesus Jr., but there is no obvious in-house choice to step in if Theriot is cut loose.

“I don’t know the situation. I’m just keeping my fingers crossed that I’ll be there,” he said. "Last year, arbitration, that stunk. It’s not very fun. I want to play ball. Actually, I just want to win. That’s why I want to be in L.A. I know the talent on this team can win. Even with a lot of stuff going on this year, it reminds me when we turned it around with the Cubs [in 2008].

Just throwing this against the wall

from the org’s point of view…

1) They liked DeWitt more and thought he was better than DeJesus
2) Going with DeWitt didn’t exactly work (not all DeWitt’s fault, of course), and they traded him. Might not want to go down that road again
3) They have a “proven second baseman” in Theriot, especially defensively

I am not the biggest Theriot fan, but if I had to choose between only Theriot (at $4m) or DeJesus (at ~$415k), I would choose Theriot. Not that those are the only two options, of course.

by Eric Stephen on Nov 9, 2010 11:21 AM PST up reply actions

I thought the goal was Lilly

but to get him we had to add DeWitt and they had to add Theriot so we’d have a 2nd baseman.

I don’t understand option 1 here. It was not an option headed into 2010. If we did not have Carroll as our back up I would agree with you but since we do, I think they can take that route. They can also simply make Carroll the starting 2nd baseman and have DeJesus as the valid backup who can play 2nd, SS, and 3rd.

You can be (incompetent and a nice guy), you can be (competent and an asshole), but if you are an (asshole and incompetent), your only future is to be Keith's boss otherwise you are unemployable

I’m saying they viewed 2009 DeWitt higher than 2010 DeJesus.

Regarding the Lilly trade, the deal could have been done without DeWitt (Colletti said so himself), but it appears the prospect cost would have been too high. I agree about the “since we are including DeWitt, you have to give us Theriot” part though.

At the end of 2010 I would agree

because DeWitt had already played and impressed Torre. However DeJesus is now doing the same thing with Mattingly, I’d be shocked if there is any concern about DeJesus’s defense at 2nd base, I’d be even more surprised if it is not as good as Theriots. I think the fact he’s now taking balls at 3rd base means they want to know if he can be the total utility infielder.

I honestly don’t know why they would want Theriot at 4 Million over Carrol/DeJesus unless they really like Theriot. Carroll seems to be a better player in all aspects and with DeJesus on the roster he can get plenty of rest.

I agree with Phil, Ryan Theriot wasn’t the grand prize at the end of the rainbow.

If the Dodgers really need to get creative to sign or trade an impact bat, that should mean that they should get ready to cut players on the margins. Cutting guys like Theriot who is projected to get $4 million, and other players like Martin, and Sherrill, and giving that salary to a guy like Crawford or Werth makes more sense to me.

Even if they do cut Theriot, you can re-sign him or somebody else to a $1 million contract. Ryan Theriot can’t think he can get $4 million on the open market, so why give it to him?

Yes

Kelly Johnson was coming off an injury-plagued (346 PA) and shitty 2009 when he got non-tendered, and got $2.35m from Arizona. Theriot’s good for at least $3m or so on the open market.

by Eric Stephen on Nov 9, 2010 11:33 AM PST up reply actions

Kelly Johnson also had a much better offensive career than Theriot. Johnson was also younger than Theriot is now.

by Tripon on Nov 9, 2010 11:35 AM PST up reply actions

Agree with this. We can’t afford to be paying Theriot and Sherrill $4M when we could use that money to go to a higher impact player.

by OB12 on Nov 9, 2010 11:32 AM PST up reply actions

Just a few thoughts

1. They want Carroll to be available to play 3-4 times a week to b/u Blake, Furcal, maybe play against lefties and play second.

2. All this talk about Loney and Theriot really doesn’t mean much until we know who they tender a contract with (or if they sign a first/second baseman).

3. Second base is down on their list of priorities, starting and relief pitching, left field, catcher. (then first and second base).

4. The Dodgers will never compete with the Yankees for a player so stop talking about Cliff Lee.

5. I could see them waiting to see if a player like Quentin gets non-tendered but don’t know about them dealing Loney (unless they do plan to go for a Konerko-type,)

6. The Lilly deal almost by itself means that the Dodgers will not go in to 2011 with any starting position player not having 2-3 years of MLB experience.

by bhsportsguy on Nov 9, 2010 11:38 AM PST up reply actions

Takashi Saito — 69.657

I love Saito, but that right there is your nightmare scenario if your pick is not protected.

Segways nicely into Adam Dunn

You can be (incompetent and a nice guy), you can be (competent and an asshole), but if you are an (asshole and incompetent), your only future is to be Keith's boss otherwise you are unemployable

Garcia...DeJesus and BCG

These guys would end the top 15 for me they way the voting as gone..
Garcia..high potential of guys left..
Dejesus..solid 2b who could be like ODOG
BCG..unheralded OF who can play RF and occ CF who just produces better than anybody expects. The only real downside on BCG is he doesn’t walk much..but if he hits 20+ hrs and hits .300 who cares..put him in #5/6 slot. He doesn’t K much and is a contact swinger like Vlad.

BCG

has to prove he can hit more advanced pitching. He is already getting old in prospect years.

exactly

BCG is only two weeks younger than De Jesus
