In 1996, Joe Girardi becomes the Yankees' starting catcher. Manager Joe Torre likes him so much, he delays the promising career of Jorge Posada for an additional 3 seasons. Because Posada's career is postponed, his decline is postponed as well. Meanwhile, as Girardi played a part with the Yankees during their most successful period in decades, the Steinbrenners give him a shot at full control. Joe Torre heads for LA, where he continues the policy of overusing Russell Martin, (perhaps) contributing to an accelerated decline. Thinking his best days have already passed, the Dodgers are willing to part with Martin, where he is able to search for a team that needed a new catcher, a team which ends up being the same one whose long-term catcher finally needs a break- Girardi's New York Yankees.
It all comes full circle.
