If You Sign Scott Podsednik, You'll Shoot Your Eye Out

Yesterday, Tony Jackson of ESPN Los Angeles reported the Dodgers had narrowed their 2011 left field options down to two choices:

The team's search for a left fielder, according to a source who spoke on the condition of anonymity, has been narrowed to two players: Bill Hall and Scott Podsednik, with a strong preference for Hall because he is a right-handed hitter.

Today, Hall has reportedly signed with the Houston Astros, per Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports, on a one-year, $3 million deal with a mutual option for 2012. That would leave the Dodgers with just one choice.

Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuudge...only I didn't say fudge.

Don't do it, Ned.

There is nothing Podsednik brings to the table that a hybrid of Tony Gwynn Jr., Jay Gibbons, Xavier Paul, and/or Jamie Hoffmann can't match. Christmas shopping season is over.

I think half the reason I can't stand Podsednik...

..is not just that he’s, you know, “bad at baseball”, but because he’s one of those guys who managers inexplicably feel the need to play eight days a week NO MATTER WHAT.

by court168627 on Dec 17, 2010 12:02 PM PST up reply actions

Well, from reading that, it actually looks like there really are a few trading partners. He admits that Detroit, Cinci, and St. Louis are possiblities. I wouldn’t dismiss WhiteSox, Angels, Brewers, or DBacks like he did.
I know that his point was that Broxton is not viable trade bait, I just think he’s wrong.

i doubt stl puts a 7mil reliever on their team who will hit arb the same year they try to re-sign Pujols. Unless of course they decide to go for it this year with the assumption that they won’t be able to sign Albert next year.

That being said

depends on the return. If you get him for someone making a similar amount, or for lesser prospects/higher ceiling but further from MLB prosects, you may be okay.

The Angels have committed ~$8.8 million to two relievers in 2011 salary this offseason, plus are paying Rodney another $5.5m. They aren’t acquiring another pricey reliever.

Actually, that's a really cool idea.

You’d have three years of the Buckeyes or Badgers division, guys on that team would be like, “We own this division!” I think that really would spur competition. Could you send that to the commish, please? I mean, it’s not like the division names are going to stick or anything, so make them malleable.

I don't think signing Scott Podsednick

would be the worst thing in the world, and I honestly don’t think he is much better or worse then the other candidates, including bill hall. The difference between him and bill hall is not going to be what makes or breaks our season, that is going to be whether or not the Giants offense just sucks, or mega-sucks.

This is true. I just don’t like Pods as a player, and don’t think there is much upside. At least in theory, even with a guy like Hall, there is a chance, albeit slight, at a good season.

Given that Pods appears to be the remaining choice as picked by the Dodgers, I would just prefer they didn’t do anything, and wait and see with the current group.

was supposed to be he mashed lefties, something he actually hasn’t done since 2008, and in 08 and 09 he ops’d lower then 700. Looking at pods numbers over the last few years compared to halls, I just don’t see it, unless we really think Hall will reproduce last year.

Well if we are going to poke an eye out

ie – sign Pods. Let’s just limit it to one eye and not both eyes plus an ear drum, ie – signing him to a multi-year contract.

Best case scenario: One eye poked out
Worst case scenario: Two eyes, an ear drum and a left testicle.

So...

1. If we didn’t sign our latest reliever, we’d have the money for Bill Hall most likely… I’d make that “trade”…did we really need that extra arm?

2. I suppose if Matt Kemp remembers how to play baseball now that he’s single, and Either stays somewhat healthy, our 2 OF now can produce and start making up for this feeling of dire need for solid production from LF

3. Let’s hypothetically imagine it’s literally down to Pods… anyone up for skipping on that contract and just skipping straight to starting a minor leaguer and wing it? I mean seriously…their defense will be better and their offense will probably be more or less same-ish.

I’m going to be really pissed off if the Giants bring up Belt, and the Dodgers are wasting time on Hoffman/Gibbons/Paul..

Baseball is also about entertainment.
I’d much more interested if Sands was playing.

I just dont see what the Dodgers have to lose…if Sands sucks..you send him back to AAA. If he’s great…we’ll you just found yourself a piece to the puzzle…and if he’s just average…we’ll thats still better than playing XP or Gibbons bc Sands may get better with seeing MLB pitching….the other vets wont.

You don't tire of this "argument" do you?

The fact that Sands struck out 123 times in low-A/AA combined last year alone says that Sands has got stuff to learn in AA/AAA this coming year. What’s the MLE for 123 Ks in lowA/AA, to Mark Reynolds level and beyond?

@davidyoungtbla - The commenter formerly known as El Lay Dave.

by David Young on Dec 17, 2010 5:05 PM PST up reply actions

I think he has stuff to learn to.
He’s not a finished product.

But I also think he’d be best served learning at the MLB level…bc even if he sucks its not like the Dodgers could put someone else out there that’d do much better.

His k rate IMO isnt even that big of concern.
Power/BB hitters are going to strikeout bc they swing for the fences and work deep in the count.

Jayson Werth – 2002- (age 23)…125ks in AAA. (443 abs)
2003 he was hurt…82ks in 298 ABs again in AAA…
2004 he came up to the Dodgers and produced.

I dont think Werth improved much by playing in AAA..certainly his k rate didnt really change by additional minor league experience.

I just dont see AAA serving Sands in a useful purpose.

by Joey Joe on Dec 17, 2010 5:13 PM PST up reply actions

If I were the GM, I can see not wanting to pin my livelihood on a 25th round pick from a D-II school with half a season of experience above low-A ball “learning at the MLB level”. (Messrs. Kershaw, Billingsley, Kuroda, Lilly and Garland might not appreciate it either). I can see, instead, letting him get more exposure to AA/AAA pitching to see how he continues to perform and/or improve.

You’re not seriously using one counterexample to claim that no one ever improves their K rate in the minors, are you?

For LF...

I would really like to see a platoon of Xavier Paul and Jamie Hoffmann. Granted, Paul didn’t do well in 2010 for us, notwithstanding a AAA line of .325/.384/.579. With players like Martin, Etheir, Kemp, and Loney hitting well right off the bat in the majors, we have forgotten that MOST hitters who go on to have good MLB careers do NOT produce immediately in the majors. Let’s see if Paul can do better in 2010. If we don’t let him hit against lefties, all the better.

…but whether it works well or works badly would determine whether I like it or put up with it till a more-highly-thought-of prospect like Robinson or Sands can take over an OF starter job in LA. Payroll help

I’m trying to put together a payroll worksheet for the Nationals like the one Eric keeps posted. The plethora of young Nats players are killing me. I could use some instruction on how to best guesstimate 2011 salaries for players under team control and those going into arbitration.

I’m a long time Dodgers fan who moved to the DC area eight years ago and recently decided that the Nats fanbase (what little there is) needed me. I’ve read Dodger Thoughts and TBLA for years (and Tony Jackson before that), so I joined the sbnation blog Federal Baseball. A few days ago I wanted to know how much salary was available to pay for someone like Greinke, but alas there was no up to date payroll to be found. So, I’m making one.

The pattern I see is to start with $414k base and add a random $5-15k per year until arbitration, when ~40% of FA price is awarded, though sometimes not.

Does anyone besides Eric know how to predict this stuff?

by dc Roach on Dec 17, 2010 7:07 PM PST reply actions

The best way for arbitration players is to compare them to players of their own position and service time. The best resource out there is Cot’s Baseball Contracts, which has details for every team.

by Eric Stephen on Dec 17, 2010 7:16 PM PST up reply actions

Yeah, I’ve been using that. I got a bit stuck on a 2nd year arb reliever, but I should probably just leave him for last since it’s so hard to compare and predict him.

Is the adding $5-15k thing realistic? I’ve got ten players under team control on the likely 25 man roster, so the money actually adds up.

by dc Roach on Dec 17, 2010 7:23 PM PST up reply actions

For the most part, that’s a good rough estimate. Pay attention to their service time if you can get that data. Some teams have strict policies regarding certain amounts based on service time, but adding $5-15k per year is a decent enough guess.

"Heroes get remembered, but Legends never die."

by Tommy Blackjack on Dec 17, 2010 9:23 PM PST up reply actions

Okay, here goes........

After reading thru all the back and forth about who we should go after to fill the all-important left field spot on the roster, and our relief pitching deficiencies, and our lack of OBP, I have come to the following conclusions:

Barring injuries:
1. We have a very good starting pitcher supply
2. We have a very good relief pitching corp
3. We have enough oufielders to go around
(these outfielders can also hit pretty well, too)
4. Our infield is pretty good (fielding and hitting)

The main thing we have all been discussing is left field. Well, left field is the easiest position in the outfield. It’s where you hide the worst fielder. You don’t need a great arm, you just need to catch the ball, not trip over your dreads, and get it back to the infield. We’ve all talked about Gwynn playing center. Why? Is he better than Kemp? I doubt that the difference is that great. And Gwynn is the new guy. (Making considerably less, I might add) Put him in left, and don’t mess with the status quo. It makes people irritable.
I guess the purpose of TBLA is to be able to discuss these things, and many OT subjects that are NSFW, so let’s continue. But don’t forget to be considerate to the other commenters, and when you rip their balls off with a snide comment, make sure that it’s funny!

I'm sayin' "What's in it for me?"

by iiidown on Dec 17, 2010 9:04 PM PST reply actions

Right. And the question is whether the improved defense in CF can in any way make up for the lousy offense.

Barring a creative trade or a deal that I don’t see coming, I don’t know that there’s a better choice right now than Gwynn in center.

Juan Uribe, 2B

Man, that isn’t a good lineup. But if Kemp hits, Blake’s descent into geritatry isn’t too pronounced, Uribe has an OK year, and, most importantly, the pitching is as good as advertised…. then maybe.

I have to agree....

(Dammit! There i go agreeing with you again!)

I'm sayin' "What's in it for me?"

by iiidown on Dec 17, 2010 9:27 PM PST up reply actions

Yeah, Tripon’s probably right. Gwynn is probably (correctly) viewed as a fourth/fifth outfielder. If pushed into a starting role, he will not displace a starter (at least not regularly. If he is a reserve/occasional starter, I can see him starting in CF on the days he starts).

But Gwynn in LF makes no sense to me. His only skill is defense.

At the risk of disagreeing with Canuck, I just don’t want to see a Paul/Hoffmann platoon. I’m not a believer that either player can handle more than a bench role. And if we’re going to discuss platoons — for Pete’s sake, the Dodgers already need a lefty-mashing corner outfielder to platoon with Andre Ethier, never mind left field.

So I guess what I’m saying is: as unlikely as the Dodgers are to move Kemp and stick Gwynn in center, it is the move I advocate for now. Basically, I agree with Jon: we are stuck with a bad choice, and the only player who brings anything to the table at all is Gwynn with his defense.

They’re saying that Boras is gonna try to go for arbitration hearing, and if Indians decline it, Boras will try to go to the team that has lot of korean fans which is actually LAD from Chan Ho Park, Hee Seop Choi, and Jae Weong Seo, and try to get a big contract for Choo.

Putting your eye out does not make you a pirate, but the results could be so disasterous that you might get fired and become a Pirate.

Sincerely,

There's no need to fear, Underdog is here! / Broncos/Dodgers/Lakers fan in Niners/Raiders/Giants/Warriors country, and damned proud of it.

Honestly, what does Ned have against

Lastings Milledge, Austin Kearns, and Marcus Thames, all of whom would be absolutely perfect for our current team need in LF? Did they all collectively make fun of Ned’s mustache or something?
