I love (or hate really) hearing complaints about this or that when they have a relatively flat game, or quarter, even though they are still generally awesome. Spoiled indeed.
Fun to watch the young Clippers gel though. Griffin is already a human highlight real.

Arenas to Orlando for Rashard Lewis.
Another trade would bring Hedo Turkoglu and Jason Richardson to Orlando for Vince Carter and Marcin Gortat sending them to Phoenix.

I get it
although the argument made there misses one point, which is that it takes more time to go to the store and stay stocked on the ingredients to prepare fresh food all time and sometimes you just gotta rely on stuff that stores a lot longer.
That said, I’m much happier eating food that I prepared fresh than from “convenience” items.
@davidyoungtbla - The commenter formerly known as El Lay Dave.
You feel really strongly about this subject, huh?
I’m all about the idea BEHIND the show, but some of her ideas are just…really out there.
Winter is coming.
I’m just supporting D. Young and working folk everywhere. My mom makes her chili, while I was horrified to learn the process, the end result is tasty. I think like any cook it’s gonna be hit or miss and when you’re working from her self-imposed limitations there’s gonna be a lot more misses
by Josie Becker on Dec 18, 2010 3:00 PM PST up reply actions
if you want some decent easy, quick, "semi-homemade" meals
Rachel Ray actually has a lot of good ones. Sandra Lee’s palate is just not, um, very good hahah while Rachel Ray has a lot more hits than misses and while she does get a lot of prepared stuff, it’s not like shes adding crap to crap like Sandra Lee.
So I think we are in what we call at work “violent agreement”. Semi-homemade as an idea is a palatable concept, just use good ingredients when doing so.
@davidyoungtbla - The commenter formerly known as El Lay Dave.
Yeah, no problem with that. Just don’t do completely inane things like add cocoa powder to vanilla frosting so you can pretend its a recipe.
@andrewngrant
by regfairfield on Dec 18, 2010 3:08 PM PST up reply actions
I can understand how that sort of thing drives people crazy.
@davidyoungtbla - The commenter formerly known as El Lay Dave.
What’s surprising to me is that my personal opinion of Sandra Lee got conflated with food elitism. Listen, I eat easy mac. I like good food and I like to eat (obviously) and I’m aware people don’t have the time/money to eat organic or fresh or whatever.
But after watching her show a lot (and I do it for the cocktails and the tablescapes) I can honestly say that I am usually just flat out horrified at the combinations she puts together. I like the idea of semi-homemade — that’s how I cook a lot of the time — but her ideas are…holy god. That’s what I consider the affront to food.
I find Rachel Ray terribly annoying as a human being — why shorten it to EVOO if you’re going to say “That’s Extra Virgin Olive Oil” every single time right afterwards? — but I think that her recipes work AND they’re not some terrible idea like prosciutto, fig, and goat cheese quesadillas.
Anyway, I realize this conversation is dead and everything but I just didn’t want you to think I was being elitist towards people who rely on semi-homemade methods of cooking.
Winter is coming.
yep
i agree with you completely with that statement :D when i make chili, i use a jar of salsa instead of fresh onions and peppers (i learned this from alton brown of all people!). but i dont buy canned chili hahah
jar???? ;-)
I often have the fresh salsa that comes in a pint or 24 oz tub on hand to use as an ingredient for such things (and yummy on omelets) , and that stuff lasts a week or better in my fridge, but yeah, same concept.
@davidyoungtbla - The commenter formerly known as El Lay Dave.
while length of storage
for a lot of food items is an issue, as long as you plan ahead (and have a grocery store nearby on the way home from work) you should be able to always have fresh food around.
i know its a huge pain to always have homecooked meals with fresh ingredients. i hit up pre-prepared frozen food from time to time and it def has it’s unavoidable place in life (especially for families with young children and working parents) but i also think there is so much more value in the results of the extra effort to make something fresh and healthier. also, frozen food is often not shared at a table as a whole family which is also a drawback. sure its easier and quickly to just eat whenever but the value of setting a table and having the whole family sit there and suffer thru each other has its value and its worth the extra effort, in my opinion.
Planning takes time too. And after slogging 30 miles up the 405, sometimes you just don’t feel like stopping at the goddamn grocery store. One thing that I like are fresh green beans. I like them in stir-frys, sauteed in various ways as a side dish, etc. They seem to last about a day and a half in my refrigerator. I really don’t feel like stopping at the store three times a week, so I just eat green beans less often. Others make make that trade-off differently.
Not sure how interrelated how you prepare the food and when and where you eat it are. I am in favor of mealtimes at the table, whether that meal is freshly prepared or a take-out pizza.
@davidyoungtbla - The commenter formerly known as El Lay Dave.
That said, as empty nesters, the wife and I often now eat in front of the TV so we can catch up on our DVR and DVD stuff while eating.
Not like we have anything left to talk about after knowing each other for 26 years. :-)
@davidyoungtbla - The commenter formerly known as El Lay Dave.
hahah
my wife and i eat in front of the tv too, but when we have kids that will change. and when we have friends over, etc.
also, take out pizza? if you can stop to pick up pizza, you can pick up some groceries, eh? ;D
apparently in Japan people basically go to the grocery store every other day because their fridges are so small and their food is so freshness oriented. same with most places not-America hahah I go to the store 3-4 times a week. It sucks but its so much cheaper than eating out and i’d rather make those extra trips than eat not-as-good-food. but that’s just my opinion of course hehe
it takes more time and effort
To stop at the store bury the food and tie it home and cook it the. It does just picking something up.

if you are too busy to get fresh food
i assume you are too busy to take time to set the table and wait for everyone to be home to eat.
im sure thats not hte case for everyone but i bet its the average.
Who's waiting?
Sometimes you do stuff that has to get done – like pay the bills, fix the doorknob, whatever – and when everyone gets home you quickly make the food and sit at the table. Parking, going into the store, collecting your items, finding the damn “club” card, checking out, loading the car, bringing the stuff in, putting it away, that time adds up.

by CanuckDodger on Dec 18, 2010 4:08 PM PST up reply actions
Does your lying eyes see other 1B like Mark Texieira, Albert Pujols, or Adrian Gonzales? Here’s the thing about 1B defense. There’s a lot of 1B who can play defense just as good as Loney, except they can hit a lot better too.
Did I Say There Weren't OTHER First Basemen Who Are Very Good Defensively?
You named three. You are going to have to list a lot more than that to even come close to validating your claim that there are “a lot” of first basemen who play defense as well as Loney. And among that group — whom I am sure will have fine or even wonderful defensive metrics — there will no doubt be people who are NOT credited with great defense by scout who depend on their lying eyes.
by CanuckDodger on Dec 18, 2010 4:49 PM PST up reply actions

Joey Votto
Albert Pujols
James Loney
Adrian Gonzalez
Lyle Overbay
Gaby Sanchez
Casey Kotchman
Todd Helton
Carlos Pena
Mark Teixeria
Billy Butler
Adam Dunn
Miguel Cabrera
Garret Jones
Prince Fielder
Troy Glaus
Ryan Howard
Paul Konreko
Canuck, tell me who you like less than Loney on this list?
Whoa -- Hold On Now...
Loney ranked SEVENTH according to UZR and you called that “slightly above average?” Since you said that phrase I was assuming Loney must have ranked at 13 or 14. So now not just eyes but defensive metrics rate Loney’s defense at “very good.” Swell.
As for you do I like less than Loney on that list, that question makes it into a popularity contest, and that is not something that comes into play in forming the position that I have on Loney. My position is this: I too am disappointed in his offensive production. In the abstract, there are an awful lot of 1B’s I’d rather have than him. But this isn’t an abstract world. In the real world, we already have Loney under club control, a potentially better replacement (Jerry Sands) is already in the organization and probably no more than a season away from being MLB-ready, and given what Loney will cost in salary in 2011 on a club where payroll is being allocated to other positions, I think going with Loney one more year makes sense.

Ugh, That Second Paragraph Above Should Begin:
As for your question about who I like less than Loney…
by CanuckDodger on Dec 18, 2010 5:28 PM PST up reply actions
Look at at how many people are bunched up by UZR. Daric Barton and Ike Davis are ahead of everyone, and everyone else below him are separated by a few points.
Yes, Loney is 7th, but that he only has a positive 1.5 runs saved overall.
As You Said...
…there are OTHER first basemen who are good with the glove, so of course there will be bunching at the top. When Loney can rate above Adrian Gonzalez and Casey Kotchman — two outstanding glove men — that is really saying something beyond what our eyes have always told us about Loney’s defense.
by CanuckDodger on Dec 18, 2010 5:36 PM PST up reply actions
My point is that Loney doesn’t stand out on defense. He really needs to hit in order to be effective.

Right but you’re eating Loney’s bat no matter what. If your best option really is Marcus Thames, who honestly can’t be any better than Loney would be, and you can find someone who can on base better than .320, it might be worth it.
And I know this will never happen.

Thames appears to be our best option. I hope Ned isn’t too aggressive and tries to trade for a LF first. Quentin,Beltran, or Raburn would be good fits for LF.

If Marcus Thames is honestly the best option, give Tony Gwynn 600 at bats.

Basically agrees that Thames is the best of the stinky options, and his bat is best but glove is bad so why bother, basically. Agree with you mostly Mike. Still would rather add Thames’ bat to the mix over the other guys, but I’m ok waiting til Spring to see how things pan out and what other guys are suddenly available.
I wish Ned was better at seeing things more creatively, working trades for guys like Raburn, Boesch or Gordon. But instead he just sorts through the poopy veteran free agent pool. Tho I do understand the idea of a stopgap solution though so guys like Sands and Robinson will get a shot, so there’s that…

BIG RUMOR
Greinke to… THE BREWERS (rumor)
http://www.jsonline.com/blogs/sports/fanblogs/112137964.html
Saw that
Thought it kind of irresponsible of the paper to print that though at least now they are making it clear they know it’s just a rumor. If true, that’ll be quite a trade all around. Guess we’ll see!

Rumor
The thing about the rumor at least they are putting names and dollars with the story.
Dodgers Left Field
As candidates for the Dodgers LF decrease. I still keep on thinking that if the Dodgers add Marcus Thames, as a part time LF/ right hand PH off the bench, movie Uribe to 3b and make the platoon in LF Blake, Gibbons, and a smattering of Thames, and then give DeJesus a shot at 2b, along with Carroll.
The advantages of this situation perhaps DeJesus becomes a high OBP guy, and while Blake is probably not a great LF, by putting him in the mix there, Thames defense liabilities are decreased.

Greinke to the Brewers has now been confirmed by 2 sources..
Both the KC and Milwaukee papers are reporting it.
http://onmilwaukee.com/sports/articles/brewersgreinketrade.html
Brewers get Zack Greinke
Royals get Lorenzo Cain, Alcides Escobar, Jake Odorizzi, Jeremy Jeffress
Great deal for the Brewers…
Royals what are you thinking?
Ned – please do these types of deals.
I’m in shock. That is a pretty terrible return for Greinke, even if Escobar is supposedly great on defense. Wow.
by silverwidow on Dec 18, 2010 11:24 PM PST up reply actions
Brewers starting staff looks much better now..
#1. Greinke
#2. Gallardo
#3. Marcum
#4. Wolf
#5. Bush
With their offense they may finally turn into the team most thought they could be…
2010- 77-85….2011 they should win 85-90 games.
I Disagree That It Is A Low Price....
Three young majors leaguers — including a CF and SS because the Royals’ future looks set at the corners, and all with about 17 pre-free agency years left — plus a pitching prospect who is at the same level as Allen Webster but is better than Webster. And the Brewers take on a huge amount of additional payroll for one player for the next two years while the Royals lighten their payroll a great deal. The Royals didn’t get screwed at all.
by CanuckDodger on Dec 19, 2010 12:37 AM PST up reply actions
Greinke
has a very team-friendly contract considering he’s one of the best pitchers in the game. If this is true, the Brewers aren’t trading Prince this year, they are going for it.
Overqualified in an underqualified world since 2008.
Odorizzi
In Baseball America’s Top 20 Prospect list for the Midwest League this year, the report on Odorizzi contains the following quote: “Two scouts called him a lesser version of Zack Greinke.”:)

I agree with Canuck to a degree. These are some big prospect names and hardly a bunch of stiffs. I know Granick is a guy you unload the farm for. The Brewers just did that. We’ll see if it works.
I imagine Grankle is worth all those prospects to the Brewers, but no other team could give the Royals anywhere near that for him. Granecke is one of the elite pitchers, but would not think that the Dodgers would need him. We have a pretty fair bunch of starters as is. I think Grenack will do well in Milwaukee, as it is a small market town.
I'm sayin' "What's in it for me?"
Yeah excellent prospects
we’re talking arguably the Brewers two best (Escobar was their #1 last season, Cain, was in top 10 and had a good season), another good prospect, and yet another player we don’t know yet. Maybe they didn’t have to trade a more experienced great player like a Braun (not that this would’ve been realistic anyway) but for once I’d say it doesn’t look like lesser slop was traded for an ace.
Seems like Greinke also preferred to stay in fairly small market cities (didn’t want to go to DC, probably didn’t want to go to a Boston or NY either…?)

I’m convinced that making trades is the easiest way to bring in elite talent.
Johan, Greinke, Adrian Gonzalez, Dan Haren…
You’d think GMs will realize that having 1 elite player is better than acquiring 2-3 non-elite players…but some havent.
Last I looked
none of the teams who unloaded their farm systems for the elite talent you mentioned above have even made it into the post season. At least add Halladay and Lee so the comment makes some sense. And you can add Teixeira to the group where it screwed the future while not helping the present.
Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen
I would note however
The Dodgers aren’t really searching for “pitching” (looks at the the last signing). If we’re trading prospects, it’ll be with Broxton for a bat.
On a side note, out of humor rather realism,
It’d be funny if Philly traded prospects to get him. Then they could just boast a 1-5 staff of epic proportions….
I am running out of the house now but
Outside of the financial cost, an equivalent offer (and this is maybe because 3 of the Brewer’s trade pieces have already played or at least made an MLB debut) would have been Dee Gordon, Trayvon Robinson, Allen Webster and I think you would have had to beef it up by putting in Kenley Jansen.
In other words,
Drain the minor league system for a pitcher we don’t need.
I'm sayin' "What's in it for me?"
Dee Gordon is a SS
other then that, not much is equal to Escobar.
Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen
Seems like clockwork
that whenever a big time player is dumped the immediate thought is that they gave up to little. I blame the Teixeira trade for this behavior. The next thought is that that the Dodgers could easily have beaten the same deal. The same system that has one top 50 prospect and that prospect was in AA. There is no conspiracy, if the Dodgers had the players the other teams would want, then deals might get done. At this moment to many question marks are related to our most advanced prospects which all resided in AA in 2010. The Brewers got a major league ready SS, a major league ready CF, a solid pitching prospect, and one other prospect. When it comes to major league ready, we have nothing. Not this winter.

the Brewers ended up with Grienke. Another elite pitcher headed to the NL. Looks like a trend:
Santana, Halladay, Lee, and now Grienke.
