Loney be tender with my love

The Dodgers have reported that they will tender James Loney, but that the decision on Russell Martin will probably not be decided until the very last minute. From Inside the Dodgers:

It's decision day on a few Dodger players, most notably Russell Martin, and Ned Colletti just told Jim Hill in an interview that this is one of the toughest decisions he's had to face since he came to the Dodgers. We'll know by 9 p.m. PT tonight at the latest what that decision is and hopefully that will provide a little more clarity on the catching situation.

As Eric prepares his write up  on the Martin decision (he has to write four versions). We will continue the poll for the late afternoon crowd.

i.e. “non-tender”

I think no doubt he will be non - tendered

I guess the real question is, will he sign a contract with us before that happens.

Would you trade Martin

for Jacoby Ellsbury?

Two down years, two guys who their teams aren’t sure how they fit. It’s interesting, to say the least.

by G.Scott on Dec 2, 2010 3:08 PM PST up reply actions

If we’re gonna non tender Martin anyway, sure, but I think you can accomplish the same thing by keeping Martin and signing Scotty Pods.

by regfairfield on Dec 2, 2010 3:10 PM PST up reply actions

Podsednik and Ellsbury

are not nearly the same player. Ellsbury is an elite defensive CF with 60 steal speed and a bad attitude (from what I gather). podsednik has 20 steal speed if he plays full time and can’t even be hidden in LF.

The monkey is out of the bottle.

by G.Scott on Dec 2, 2010 3:13 PM PST up reply actions

Podsednik has the centerfold wife.

Ellsbury has the Bermanesque nickname Ellsbury my heart at wounded knee.

Ellsbury is pretty crappy in center, that’s why they signed Mike Cameron. Good left fielder though.

by regfairfield on Dec 2, 2010 3:14 PM PST up reply actions

We have been through this it seems every time Ellsbury is brought up

If he was an elite CF, the Red Sox would not have brought in Cameron to play CF, and move Ellsbury to LF.

fair enough

by G.Scott on Dec 2, 2010 3:35 PM PST up reply actions

It was only one season at +20, and most of that came from playing the corners.

by regfairfield on Dec 2, 2010 3:37 PM PST up reply actions

absolutely yes

but i dont think the red sox would do that straight up (especially now that they signed varitek) they’d probably ask the dodgers to throw in a prospect.

Ellsbury would be a way better catch than resigning Pods. He’s one of the fastest in the game – capable of 50+ steals a season – a decent outfielder that can play center and will hit close to .300. Not to mention he’s young, hasn’t hit his peak yet and has not even hit arb yet (i think), so he’d cost the dodgers very little.

by court168627 on Dec 2, 2010 3:21 PM PST up reply actions

I sincerely hope

Colletti just meant it was a very difficult decision in that there are a lot of factors to consider, and not because he’s non-tendering a former All-Star catcher…first Piazza, then LoDuca, now (possibly) Martin. The half-life on great Dodger catchers ain’t what it used to be, I suppose…

by TomasC on Dec 2, 2010 3:07 PM PST up reply actions

by kinbote on Dec 2, 2010 3:33 PM PST reply actions

I would bet money there have been at least 10 communications back and forth today between Ned and Martin’s agent.

by Eric Stephen on Dec 2, 2010 3:35 PM PST up reply actions

I know I said I thought there'd be a deal today, but now I think I was wrong.

Martin should play hardball.

If he gets tendered, he can go to arbitration, and make $5 or $6 million.
If he does not get tendered, he can sign any deal. Maybe he takes a Dodger deal at $4.5 million or something, or maybe other suitors drive up the price and he gets a Buckian deal… it’s hard to imagine that the bottom would fall out of the market for him and he’d end up with, say, $2 million… possible, sure, but I’d bet otherwise.

So why make a deal today? Gut it out, make them choose, and THEN try to make a deal if he gets non-tendered.

Now with 33% more Kavula

by Humma Kavula on Dec 2, 2010 3:35 PM PST up reply actions

That makes sense. The only way Martin signs early is if he stands to make more than he would in the free agent market. The arbitration system is kinda messed up . . .

by kinbote on Dec 2, 2010 3:37 PM PST up reply actions

Well, to argue the other side now… if Martin’s agent looks at Pierzynski and Kendall and Olivo and whomever and decides, you know, there’s too much competition for Martin, we’re better off taking the bird in the hand — then he makes the deal.

Sometimes...you just have to go WTF...

The most frustrating thing about Dodger management is understanding how they value certain players.

Today should be exactly the opposite…Russ Martin should get tendered..while Loney should be the “toughest decision of Ned’s career” or what not…

If Martin/Loney each put up their average numbers…Martin is still alot more valuable. Martin, even at his shitty levels of production the last several years…is still at worst a league average catcher.

Loney…is at the bottom of 1st basemen…every single season.

Not to mention its easier to find a 1st baseman than catcher.

WTF? This stuff is like basic stuff…and Ned Colletti still doesnt get it. He overvalues the “playing everyday” aspect when if you play poorly…it doesnt really help the team.

maybe Padilla can be gotten for 3.5

If we can’t sign him it probably means that Dodger management thinks he is worth less than what he will get paid in arb or less than what Martin thinks he is worth. What value would that situation hold for another team? A team without a catcher? Well, isn’t that us. Just curious.

Adam Dunn

354 HRs, 31 years old. Almost a lock to get to 500, only has to average 27 home runs until age 40 to get to 600.

3a. If he makes it, some will cite his Coors-inflated stats and say it’s a cryin’ shame

I enjoyed Wu and Swearingen’s relationship as much as any.

by keithc13 on Dec 2, 2010 6:00 PM PST up reply actions

How was Deadwood more of a miniseries?

There were 12 episodes per season, and 3 seasons of what was supposed to be a guaranteed 4 and probable 5.

There are 13 episodes of Mad Men per season, and so far 4 seasons.

Perhaps that makes it a miniseries too for you? In any case, you should watch it. Greatest TV, well along with Breaking Bad and Terriers.

Cable TV series are nowadays no longer than 12-13 episodes per season. (In the UK, a miniseries is usually 4-6 episodes, but I can’t remember when the last US one that short appeared. Well the first season of The Walking Dead is apparently just 7 episodes. Maybe I’ve seen a few on USA channel too.)

by meercatjohn on Dec 2, 2010 6:14 PM PST up reply actions

So for people who were alive then like you and me, it’s not a period piece. Forget about that aspect then. That’s not really the point of Mad Men anyway, even though the fact that they do it so well is what’s garnered much of the attention. It’s a multi-layered novel on screen, about people’s work and private lives, that beats anything since Flaubert and Tolstoy. Try it.

2 Questions

1) If he would sign for a 1 or 2 year deal at a similar figure (no more than $2 million more, for example) to what Loney would get in arbitration, do people think Berkman would be a better option at 1B? And yes, I know this may be moot with Loney getting tendered.
2) What do people think about Tony Gwynn, Jr. (non-tendered today) as a defensive replacement in the OF? He’d come cheap, and boy do we need one with a current OF of Kemp, Ethier, and Gibbons.

by Preston on Dec 2, 2010 7:17 PM PST reply actions

Tony Gwynn Jr would be great and could at least platoon with someone.

by regfairfield on Dec 2, 2010 7:20 PM PST up reply actions

He doesnt really have a favorable platoon split over the last 3 years.

vs RHP – .235/.331/.313 (575 abs)
vs LHP – .255/.309/.315 (149 Abs)

I wouldnt want Gwynn on the team.
I’d rather keep Kemp in CF and sign Pods..(as unpleasing as that sounds)…or move Kemp to LF and just play XP or Trayvon in CF.

by Joey Joe on Dec 2, 2010 7:33 PM PST up reply actions

I don't think I'd platoon him

But as potentially weak as our OF could be defensively, I’d love to have the option of putting him in CF in the late innings and pushing Kemp to RF. Plus he could pinch-run. And hey, he’d be better than Garrett Anderson at the plate!

Oh, and according to FanGraphs, Gwynn had 1.7 WAR last year, Pods had 0.4. And Gwynn probably comes at under $1 million, while Pods probably would make around $3 million.

If Ned could get a good return for Martin he should do the deal. But, if he can’t get a deal for Martin he should tender a contract. He can always trade him down the road.

I don’t like the idea of letting Martin go for nothing.

by Alex41592 on Dec 2, 2010 8:39 PM PST reply actions

Only drawback to tendering him a contract is that he’ll almost certainly go to arbitration and get 5-6 mils.

The only way to get him for less than that is to non-tender him and resign…but that is risky.

by Joey Joe on Dec 2, 2010 8:43 PM PST up reply actions

If they agree on a contract they don't have to worry

Sigh. Maybe Ned's going more toward the Giant model of low OBP lineup :-/

If Martin’s gone, replaced by an Olivo/Barajas type.. and with Uribe.. a non-Manny LF.. this could be one OBP-suck team. @ChadMoriyama

and then had 5 minutes left for Martin…that’s why the decision was going to be so hard…no time

The #Dodgers have non-tendered Russell Martin, George Sherrill and Trent Oeltjen. Quotes from Colletti to follow shortly

Any idea of #'s for Padilla?

I’m surprised he signed with the Dodgers..I’m sure with a crappy market of starters he would’ve gotten a decent deal somewhere…At least a sure starting job…

by UC.Clipper on Dec 2, 2010 9:05 PM PST reply actions

Because having 6 starters doesn't make sense.

I’ll go on a limb and say we gave Padilla at least 1 year/5 million like we did Garland…

Which if so would be quite the use of money…
