Loney be tender with my love
The Dodgers have reported that they will tender James Loney, but that the decision on Russell Martin will probably not be decided until the very last minute. From Inside the Dodgers:
It's decision day on a few Dodger players, most notably Russell Martin, and Ned Colletti just told Jim Hill in an interview that this is one of the toughest decisions he's had to face since he came to the Dodgers. We'll know by 9 p.m. PT tonight at the latest what that decision is and hopefully that will provide a little more clarity on the catching situation.
As Eric prepares his write up on the Martin decision (he has to write four versions). We will continue the poll for the late afternoon crowd.

i.e. “non-tender”
I think no doubt he will be non - tendered
I guess the real question is, will he sign a contract with us before that happens.
You can be (incompetent and a nice guy), you can be (competent and an asshole), but if you are an (asshole and incompetent), your only future is to be Keith's boss otherwise you are unemployable
Would you trade Martin
for Jacoby Ellsbury?
Two down years, two guys who their teams aren’t sure how they fit. It’s interesting, to say the least.
The monkey is out of the bottle.
If we’re gonna non tender Martin anyway, sure, but I think you can accomplish the same thing by keeping Martin and signing Scotty Pods.
Podsednik and Ellsbury
are not nearly the same player. Ellsbury is an elite defensive CF with 60 steal speed and a bad attitude (from what I gather). podsednik has 20 steal speed if he plays full time and can’t even be hidden in LF.
The monkey is out of the bottle.
We have been through this it seems every time Ellsbury is brought up
If he was an elite CF, the Red Sox would not have brought in Cameron to play CF, and move Ellsbury to LF.
You can be (incompetent and a nice guy), you can be (competent and an asshole), but if you are an (asshole and incompetent), your only future is to be Keith's boss otherwise you are unemployable
FWIW
i’m more likely to believe the pair of 20+ UZR/150 seasons than the -10UZR/150 he put up in 2009.
The monkey is out of the bottle.
FWIW
I’m more likely to believe Red Sox management then a defensive metric.
You can be (incompetent and a nice guy), you can be (competent and an asshole), but if you are an (asshole and incompetent), your only future is to be Keith's boss otherwise you are unemployable
absolutely yes
but i dont think the red sox would do that straight up (especially now that they signed varitek) they’d probably ask the dodgers to throw in a prospect.
Ellsbury would be a way better catch than resigning Pods. He’s one of the fastest in the game – capable of 50+ steals a season – a decent outfielder that can play center and will hit close to .300. Not to mention he’s young, hasn’t hit his peak yet and has not even hit arb yet (i think), so he’d cost the dodgers very little.
I sincerely hope
Colletti just meant it was a very difficult decision in that there are a lot of factors to consider, and not because he’s non-tendering a former All-Star catcher…first Piazza, then LoDuca, now (possibly) Martin. The half-life on great Dodger catchers ain’t what it used to be, I suppose…
I agree
I just meant it’s a hard-to-swallow moment when the Dodgers’ catchers leave L.A., for the most part.
Not signing LaDuca
to another long term deal and getting something for him Penny ended up being brilliant.
You can be (incompetent and a nice guy), you can be (competent and an asshole), but if you are an (asshole and incompetent), your only future is to be Keith's boss otherwise you are unemployable
the half-life on catchers, great average or otherwise, is short to begin with.

I think Tomas’s point shouldn’t be glossed over. It absolutely is not clear whether the Dodgers should tender Martin. It’s a very difficult decision.

Ned was the GM who started Martin
a AAA with only 91 at bats.

He had plenty of choices
when Navarro was healthy he could simply have not traded him to make room for Martin. The fact is that Ned put a rookie with only 91 AAA at bats into the prime position of Dodger catcher.

Martin, Link and Ely for Quentin
So Martin + Pierre for Quentin
If we want a reliever who doesn't dilly dally
and RUNS in from the bullpen every time, it appears Todd Coffey may be non-tendered by the Brewers.
If we get Coffey do we lose the sister?

According to Jayson Stark...
Dodgers STILL in on Padilla…
only way this is true is if they plan on flipping Billingsley after a solid season. This is overstating, but the point should be taken for what it is, I would only trade Billingsley for Ryan Braun.
The monkey is out of the bottle.
be careful...
i suggested that Ned might be planning on trading Bills the other day and everyone here jumped all over me
I thought it was plausible

maybe jump wasn’t the right word, but people were pretty dismissive of something that now everyone sees as fairly reasonable
The same source
that said the Dodgers were in on Padilla also mentioned John Ely as a “solid” starting pitcher.
Pass.
I would think if he signs another legit SP that Billingsley’s value would go down, not up. We’d be in a position to need to sell.
I really think Braun may be the only guy I trade Billingsley for.

Padilla is too fragile for SP but a Bully role might be perfect until he can establish himself healthy enough to start. He gives us insurance in case brox doesn’t come back as elite closer..
I should not be on this thread
because I have a criminal law review session that starts in 5 min. I’m all in favor of Martin for Ellsbury and his .291/.344/.405 line in LF, where he can platoon with Jay Gibbons, who is also lefthanded. Or keep him. Whatever. But I’d like the decision to be reached in the next 3 minutes.
So the Dunn deal is official?
If they sign Konerko I’m impressed if not they are simply treading water. Dunn in that stadium could be wild.
You can be (incompetent and a nice guy), you can be (competent and an asshole), but if you are an (asshole and incompetent), your only future is to be Keith's boss otherwise you are unemployable
Is it likely
we’ve made an offer to Martin’s agent and are simply waiting to see if he accepts or plays hardball up to the end?
I know I said I thought there'd be a deal today, but now I think I was wrong.
Martin should play hardball.
If he gets tendered, he can go to arbitration, and make $5 or $6 million.
If he does not get tendered, he can sign any deal. Maybe he takes a Dodger deal at $4.5 million or something, or maybe other suitors drive up the price and he gets a Buckian deal… it’s hard to imagine that the bottom would fall out of the market for him and he’d end up with, say, $2 million… possible, sure, but I’d bet otherwise.
So why make a deal today? Gut it out, make them choose, and THEN try to make a deal if he gets non-tendered.
Now with 33% more Kavula
That makes sense. The only way Martin signs early is if he stands to make more than he would in the free agent market. The arbitration system is kinda messed up . . .
Well, to argue the other side now… if Martin’s agent looks at Pierzynski and Kendall and Olivo and whomever and decides, you know, there’s too much competition for Martin, we’re better off taking the bird in the hand — then he makes the deal.
Now with 33% more Kavula
The point is: his agent knows the market for him, and might even have a deal in place with another team. There’s no rule against that, is there?
That would certainly be tampering, right?
by Michael White on Dec 2, 2010 3:40 PM PST up reply actions
I gotta think so… but it’s possible to skirt the lines, no? If I’m a GM I could call his agent and say, “So, have you heard anything from the Dodgers because we are interested if he gets non-tendered.”

For one thing
Buck is coming off a year in which he hit 20 home runs and was an all-star. Martin is coming off a year in which he did not finish and wasn’t much to talk about before he got hurt. So no I do not think he can dream of Buck like contract.
You can be (incompetent and a nice guy), you can be (competent and an asshole), but if you are an (asshole and incompetent), your only future is to be Keith's boss otherwise you are unemployable
Agree completely
It’s also why, IMO, Barajas hasn’t re-signed yet. If Martin is non-tendered, Rod can get more cash as a more regular-type player.
He might be in line for a Torrealba-ish deal
but not John Buck. Martin hasn’t hit for 2.5 years and is coming off a major injury. I think you guys are looking too much into his past success which is ancient at this point.
I think I may have singled him out as the guy I would platoon in LF

Sometimes...you just have to go WTF...
The most frustrating thing about Dodger management is understanding how they value certain players.
Today should be exactly the opposite…Russ Martin should get tendered..while Loney should be the “toughest decision of Ned’s career” or what not…
If Martin/Loney each put up their average numbers…Martin is still alot more valuable. Martin, even at his shitty levels of production the last several years…is still at worst a league average catcher.
Loney…is at the bottom of 1st basemen…every single season.
Not to mention its easier to find a 1st baseman than catcher.
WTF? This stuff is like basic stuff…and Ned Colletti still doesnt get it. He overvalues the “playing everyday” aspect when if you play poorly…it doesnt really help the team.
Martin has been in the bottom third offensively the past 2 seasons.

Again though
if you sign a 1B then try to trade Loney, you’ve put yourself in a position of weakness. At least right now, we can offer Loney up as a MLB starting 1B. If you have Konerko on the team, you have to trade Loney because he has no value as a bench guy.

If it doesn’t prevent us from signing anyone, sure. But spending 17-20 million between Padilla, Garland and Uribe could have got a hell of a player instead.
Isn't
Garland 3.5
maybe Padilla can be gotten for 3.5
both would be one year players, with only Uribe being on the books past 2011. ANy of the hell of players are four years minimum which we know Ned does not do anymore since Pierre.

If Vicente Padilla is damaged enough that he’d take a job as a long reliever, would he even be better than Ely?
I know you hate Casey Blake
but dude still fields like a mofo and can hit lefties very well. He still has value.
The monkey is out of the bottle.
Why stop there? What if the team signs Padilla and Cliff Lee????
by Michael White on Dec 2, 2010 4:24 PM PST up reply actions
Rubby
is only good for maybe 140 innings next year. He will make all of them in games that don’t count for the LA Dodgers
Does Martin have much trade value?
If we can’t sign him it probably means that Dodger management thinks he is worth less than what he will get paid in arb or less than what Martin thinks he is worth. What value would that situation hold for another team? A team without a catcher? Well, isn’t that us. Just curious.
Adam Dunn
354 HRs, 31 years old. Almost a lock to get to 500, only has to average 27 home runs until age 40 to get to 600.
Something like 38,38,37,33,30, 26, 24, 20 would get it done.
Seems plausible.
The monkey is out of the bottle.
Well
that will be interesting.
Griffey, Thome and Frank Thomas are the 3 players who have hit 500+ HRs without the steroids/PEDs surrounding them.
Of those three, Thome is probably the closest to Dunn and even that if you project it out tells me Thome is much better player than Dunn
What is deadline for tendering or non tendering Duckbill btw?
I assume today too? Er, I assume they are unlikely to tender him…

I think my love of pulp comes from my growing up on freshly squeezed orange juice, from which pulp was a natural side effect, or so it seemed to me. And by growing up on it, I mean I made freshly squeezed orange juice probably a dozen times in my childhood.

The number five

The top 4 are Ruth, Williams, Gehrig and Bonds.
I think Musial could move back there if Helton's decline continues.
Helton .9786
Musial .9757
But Helton is probably a going to finish above the next left-handed hitter
Walker .9654
My opinions:
1. Coors, before the humidor, inflated Helton’s stats.
2. Helton is still a hell of a hitter and I’m comfortable putting him in the HOF.
3. No matter what happens to Helton, there will be a significant chunk of the population that says that the thing that happens to him is entirely due to Coors:
3a. If he makes it, some will cite his Coors-inflated stats and say it’s a cryin’ shame
3b. If he doesn’t make it, others will say that he was dismissed because of Coors, when in fact he was a hell of a hitter

You can be (incompetent and a nice guy), you can be (competent and an asshole), but if you are an (asshole and incompetent), your only future is to be Keith's boss otherwise you are unemployable
How was Deadwood more of a miniseries?
There were 12 episodes per season, and 3 seasons of what was supposed to be a guaranteed 4 and probable 5.
There are 13 episodes of Mad Men per season, and so far 4 seasons.
Perhaps that makes it a miniseries too for you? In any case, you should watch it. Greatest TV, well along with Breaking Bad and Terriers.
Cable TV series are nowadays no longer than 12-13 episodes per season. (In the UK, a miniseries is usually 4-6 episodes, but I can’t remember when the last US one that short appeared. Well the first season of The Walking Dead is apparently just 7 episodes. Maybe I’ve seen a few on USA channel too.)
Good points

You can be (incompetent and a nice guy), you can be (competent and an asshole), but if you are an (asshole and incompetent), your only future is to be Keith's boss otherwise you are unemployable
So for people who were alive then like you and me, it’s not a period piece. Forget about that aspect then. That’s not really the point of Mad Men anyway, even though the fact that they do it so well is what’s garnered much of the attention. It’s a multi-layered novel on screen, about people’s work and private lives, that beats anything since Flaubert and Tolstoy. Try it.

2 Questions
1) If he would sign for a 1 or 2 year deal at a similar figure (no more than $2 million more, for example) to what Loney would get in arbitration, do people think Berkman would be a better option at 1B? And yes, I know this may be moot with Loney getting tendered.
2) What do people think about Tony Gwynn, Jr. (non-tendered today) as a defensive replacement in the OF? He’d come cheap, and boy do we need one with a current OF of Kemp, Ethier, and Gibbons.
He doesnt really have a favorable platoon split over the last 3 years.
vs RHP – .235/.331/.313 (575 abs)
vs LHP – .255/.309/.315 (149 Abs)
I wouldnt want Gwynn on the team.
I’d rather keep Kemp in CF and sign Pods..(as unpleasing as that sounds)…or move Kemp to LF and just play XP or Trayvon in CF.
I don't think I'd platoon him
But as potentially weak as our OF could be defensively, I’d love to have the option of putting him in CF in the late innings and pushing Kemp to RF. Plus he could pinch-run. And hey, he’d be better than Garrett Anderson at the plate!
Oh, and according to FanGraphs, Gwynn had 1.7 WAR last year, Pods had 0.4. And Gwynn probably comes at under $1 million, while Pods probably would make around $3 million.
Lebron just made all of Cleveland his bitch…in addition to Cleveland’s punk owner.
Cleveland’s response: “Akron Hates You” chant.
I don't think they should be chanting "Who's your daddy?"

Hahhah, Jay kills me sometimes
@jay_jaffe There’s no truth to the rumor that the Dodgers are testing Russell Martin’s hip by making him chase a balled-up contract to the backstop
There's no need to fear, Underdog is here! / Broncos/Dodgers/Lakers fan in Niners/Raiders/Giants/Warriors country, and damned proud of it.
Do you think, maybe with some rest this season, he could rebound to his former Golden God glory days?

I think he can come back to being good again at least
that is my hope. Unless the Dodgers lose him, in which case, no, he’ll probably suck.

How is your fantasy matchup going Keith?
LAST SEASON, I led this team in ninth-inning doubles in the month of August!
Losing 29-0
He has 3 players going tonight. I have 0.
If it stays under 40, I’ll be okay. I bet Vick loses his fuckin mind before long though.
Texans lead the Eagles 24-20
I’m stunned

More or less stunned then I will be
at how we figure out how the Texans end up losing the game :).

Where does everyone think Russ Martin and his agent are right now?
I wonder if they are in his agent’s office…just waiting by the phone.
Or maybe Martin isnt even involved…maybe his agent is working the phone and Martin is all like “just text me when you find out something”..
this is when we find out
that silverwidow is actually clayton kershaw in disguise and that he gets a close friend to comment for him when he’s playing.

unbelievably bad call...
especially in that situation. Off balance out of control players barely touching each other on a loose ball isn’t a foul.
@neufaustcan
I don’t expect any moves other than arb guys, but if the Dodgers were to remove John Lindsey (for instance) from the 40-man, tonight would be the night. Technically, the club is tendering contracts to all players under reserve, which includes all the 0-3 guys too.
I meant to ask about Lindsey the other day
do you think he’s going to be sent back to AAA? Kept on the bench?

Per Jon Heyman
“dodgers have been trying today to trade russell martin. they have 33 minutes to tender deadline.”

More non-tender thoughts
from Heyman:
#dodgers have been trying today to trade russell martin. they have 33 minutes to tender deadline.
the only good reasons for this...
would be that they can get a good return (unlikely), or they have serious doubts about his health.
@neufaustcan
of course lack of trade interest...
could make Martin’s side consider lowering their demands.
@neufaustcan
Could be, interesting point

If it wasn't that 6 million figure,
Not only would the Dodgers be more willing to extend an offer, but like Theriot, there’d be more teams willing to talk trade
isn't
6 million less than what the other catchers have been signing for, though? Wouldn’t that be a bit of a deal?

If Ned could get a good return for Martin he should do the deal. But, if he can’t get a deal for Martin he should tender a contract. He can always trade him down the road.
I don’t like the idea of letting Martin go for nothing.
Only drawback to tendering him a contract is that he’ll almost certainly go to arbitration and get 5-6 mils.
The only way to get him for less than that is to non-tender him and resign…but that is risky.
If they agree on a contract they don't have to worry
If they can work out a two year contract a 1 year with incentives then there is no risk of arbitration…hopefully that is what they have been working on, although at this point I am beginng to thin non-tender.
Martin's Agent should also understand this
This is why they should be able to figure out a deal, if Martin is non tendered and with the Boston and Sox signing market for catchers is shrinking.

All I can say is a big Fuck you to the referees in the basketball game tonight. We got screwed all game, culminating in one of the worst calls in recent NCAA history. How you can make a call on a broken, scrambling play with the offensive player completely out of control is beyond me.
Sigh. Maybe Ned's going more toward the Giant model of low OBP lineup :-/

If Martin’s gone, replaced by an Olivo/Barajas type.. and with Uribe.. a non-Manny LF.. this could be one OBP-suck team. @ChadMoriyama

With Padilla in the fold….I really wish that the Dodgers had spent the Ted Lilly money/contract on a bat.
Seriously, that 11 million would've been a nice start for a Dunn/Beltre contract
Add whatever is left in this suddenly bottomless-payroll…and you get a strong bat
(hail of rubber band, paper clips, coffee cups.......)
"Man that ball got outta here in a hurry. I mean anything travels that far oughta have a damn stewardess on it, don't you think?"

Any idea of #'s for Padilla?
I’m surprised he signed with the Dodgers..I’m sure with a crappy market of starters he would’ve gotten a decent deal somewhere…At least a sure starting job…
Because having 6 starters doesn't make sense.
I’ll go on a limb and say we gave Padilla at least 1 year/5 million like we did Garland…
Which if so would be quite the use of money…
