Dodgers Make Room For Guerrier On 40-Man Roster; Leach On His Way To Japan?
The Dodgers cleared a spot on their 40-man roster for reliever Matt Guerrier on Tuesday when pitcher Brent Leach was designated for assignment, per Dylan Hernandez of the LA Times. This comes a day after a report from NPB Tracker that Leach signed with the Yokohama BayStars of the Japanese Central League. This is presumably similar to the situation with Eric Stults, who was sold to the Hiroshima Carp for $400,000 at the end of spring training earlier this year.
Leach is a 28-year old lefty who filled in for a few months in the 2009 Dodgers bullpen, putting up a 5.75 ERA in 38 games, mostly as a left-handed specialist. In 2010, Leach, who had pitched in relief for the better part of four years, converted back to a starter in Double A. He was 7-3 with a 4.57 ERA in 13 starts for Chattanooga in 2010.
Here is a look at the current Dodgers 40-man roster:

I included the options for the applicable players. Some players, like Broxton, Kemp, Ethier, and Billingsley, for instance, have options remaining but it has been more than three years since their MLB debut. They would have to be exposed to waivers before being optioned, so in the extremely unlikely event they would be optioned, they would be claimed by several teams anyway, so it's a moot point.
Players with five years of service time have the right to refuse assignment to the minors, so in the event that the Dodgers would want to demote Dioner Navarro, he would have to approve the move.

I thought Mallet was bad this year
apparently I was wrong. Maybe I’m thinking of another QB(besides Locker) who had first round talent, stayed for 2010, and was not good?

I can't think of anyone...
Mallett has steadily improved, and combined with his tools, I don’t see him not going top 10.

I really like Mallett.
I really like Luck and Locker too. I love big strong QBs who can throw the deep out.

I hope he does, i'm in the FFB playoffs in a 2 QB start league

In theory the Texans taking a CB in the first round seems plausible
but it won’t happen. They need a CB who can step in immediately. Also a FS as Eugene Wilson is one of the worst players in the NFL now, so they where right on that.

Yeah they'd desperately want Peterson but they won't be able to get him

Isn't he a CB?
CBs simply are horrible in their first year, almost universally(see Wilson Kareem Jackson Haden etc).

Yes but he's a CB who can step in immediately imho

Thats what they said about Kareem Jackson
there is a long history of even the top CBs in the draft not being good enough to start in their first year, and very few who have pulled it off. After going through it this year they are going to want someone with experience.
"The trouble with programmers is that you can never tell what a programmer is doing until it’s too late."
Locker has all the tools
but what has he actually done?

The DFA is more procedural than anything. There used to be a gentleman’s agreement that other teams wouldn’t claim such a player on waivers if he already had a deal in Japan. But I believe that is how the Red Sox got Kevin Millar from the Marlins.

You're not kidding.
One of the biggest smackdowns I ever got was as a freshman in college. I went to see “In the Soup” at the Coolidge Corner theater in Boston (well, Brookline). The guy who was the program director at the theater gave an intro referencing Cassavetes.
After the movie, I walked up to the guy and asked about Cassavetes, since I didn’t really know who he was… he said, “You can’t call yourself a film student without knowing who Jiohn Cassavetes is.”
At the time, I completely missed the snide tone of voice in his voice — just took it as inspiration to get cracking and see some Cassavetes movies. Looking back on it, though, he was telling me to get lost.

She's never really been an actress
She was in Godfather III as a favor to her dad, who thought she’d look authentic for the part, after Winona Ryder dropped out. Don’t think she did much other acting beyond that and was always interested in filmmaking.

What Belisario has is something much more important than an option.
He has a plane ticket to Arizona dated Nov. 5th, 2010.
With the signing of Guerrier I think he could be traded. I like the idea of Morse. Belisario and a prospect for Morse would be a good trade for both teams. I think Morse could play well if he was a starter and given 500 at bats.

What filled the rest after the 3.5 pages on the Lakers? :)
Toward the end of the Dodger season, the Times cut a lot of the Dodger space in the paper generally because of lack of interest. Dylan Hernandez and/or Jim Peltz had less and less space to fill as the season wore on, and the FYI column was eventually cut as well.

Newspapers had a license to print money. When I got to the times it was assumed you traveled first class when you traveled. That’s how much cash they were throwing off. They could afford 1600 person newsrooms and still make 25% profit. Compare it to the Grocery biz, where 3% profit is considered wildly profitable.
Now, they still get the profitability but mostly from slashed payrolls and expense cuts.
They’ll keep those numbers as long as my generation is around I suspect.

Not to belabor the subject, but
From Wikipedia:
Many of his (Murray’s) achievements include winning the NSSA’s Sportswriter of the Year award an astounding fourteen times (twelve of those consecutively). In 1990, he won a Pulitzer Prize for Commentary for his 1989 columns, and the Baseball Hall of Fame awarded him the J. G. Taylor Spink Award in 1987. Cited as an influence by countless sports journalists, Murray was a fixture at the Los Angeles Times for over 30 years. After he won the Pulitzer in 1990, Murray modestly said he thought the prize winner should have had "to bring down a government or expose major graft or give advice to prime ministers. Correctly quoting (Los Angeles Dodgers manager) Tommy Lasorda shouldn’t merit a Pulitzer Prize

Boras is just being a prick at this point
"The trouble with programmers is that you can never tell what a programmer is doing until it’s too late."
Scott Boras is doing his job
if he represented any of us, you would want him to get the best offer he could.
especially if the difference was several million dollars. Most of us would be happy with a $1,000 christmas bonus. The dude is trying to squeeze out an extra million per year and an extra year. I don’t blame him, it just sucks if it’s your team he’s holding under the iron.
My belt holds up my pants and my pants have belt loops that hold up the belt. What the f*ck’s really goin' on down there? Who is the real hero?
In these situations, like anything else
if Boras gets a reputation as being too effective at getting heavy contracts, he puts off the very people who might be customers!.
That would be true
if there was not a limited customer base, a team would have to be pretty small-minded not to deal with Boras based on how effective they believe him to be.
With Boras I think its less an issue of effectiveness
and simply that you can never be sure if his “mystery” teams are real or a complete fabrication to ring some extra money from you.
"The trouble with programmers is that you can never tell what a programmer is doing until it’s too late."
I would want him to get
me the best offer from the team that would most benefit from my services. I think he failed Beltre the first time with Seattle. I think he has failed many of his clients in putting them on teams that would be mutually beneficial. He may get the most money but in the end I think that he at times does his client a disservice by always going for the most money. JMO

You can be (incompetent and a nice guy), you can be (competent and an asshole), but if you are an (asshole and incompetent), your only future is to be Keith's boss otherwise you are unemployable
I’ve never belonged to a union, so I don’t have the reference you have. I’ve always had to do my own bargaining, which made me have to know what I was doing before apllying for a job.
My father has told me tales of the union at Chevy and Fisher Body in Van Nuys when he worked there. Some of those people were the laziest and most destructive people I’ve ever heard of. And even the union couldn’t fire them! Too many people take advantage of being in a union.
I'm sayin' "What's in it for me?"
I get that
but is that why you don’t like Miller, or is there something else?

Down year for the Pac-10
USC’s 65-64 win tonight was the first road win for the conference against an AP top 25 team. The conference as a whole is 4-12 against AP top 25 teams, and those four wins were against 16, 19 (twice, both by USC), and 21. Ugly season.
USC’s basketball season is downright stupid. Play really well against top 25 teams, play like crap against crappy teams.

I enjoyed this article
by Scott Merkin of MLB.com regarding the White Sox and their deal with Paul Konerko. The article is a bit fawning over Chicago Assistant GM Rick Hahn, but it had a nice overview of the details of a deal being struck, and the dynamics of an assistant GM and his relationship with the GM and owner.
“Jerry [Reinsdorf] was more involved in expressing the desire to have Paul back,” Hahn said. "He didn’t want to have any part of the negotiations in terms of dollars and length.
“In Jerry’s ideal word, he gives us a payroll to work with and we allocate it as we see fit. He’s very much informed how things are progressing and of Plans A, B and C and why we are prioritizing certain players and paying certain amounts. But in terms of the nitty gritty of the exchange, he tries to stay out of that.”
Things I didn't know until now
A-Rod needs 16 starts at the hot corner to reach 1,000 starts for his career. He started 1,256 games at SS earlier in his career. He will become the first 1,000-1,000 3B/SS in MLB history.
Toby Harrah is the only other player in MLB history to even play 800 games at both 3B & SS (1,050 starts at 3B, 751 starts at SS).
The only other 1,000-1,000 infielder in MLB history is Rod Carew, who played 1,184 games at 1B (1,153 starts) and 1,130 (1,071 starts) at 2B.

Saw him take Micky Rivers right out of the World Series when he had the balls to play as close as you could at 3rd base when he was up.

When he has more games at 3B than SS, will he be considered the best 3B of all time?

I mean career values. Schmidt’s (or whomever’s) whole career vs Arod’s. Arod’s games at ss count… call Arod a 3B cause thats where he has the most games.

Schmidt had an 18-season career and retired with WAR of 108.3.
A-Rod has played 17 seasons and has a WAR of 101.9 for his career (which obviously includes all of his games at SS). He will be 35 next year.
Let’s assume he plays another five years or so, all (or the vast majority) at 3B. When he retires, he will rank as the #1 3B of all time.
For what it’s worth, the #1 shortstop of all time played 21 seasons and retired with a WAR of 134.5.

Anyway
I don’t know how you can combine a man’s totals at SS and 3rd base and declare him the best 3rd baseman of all time when he may end up with slightly more games at 3rd then SS when he’s done.
Would Rod Carew be considered one of the best 2nd baseman even though he ended up playing a large % of his games at 1st base?
Robin Yount at SS even though he played a good % of his games in CF?
Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen
If that’s good enough for Bill James, it’s good enough for me. If you want to rank the greatest players of all time by position — and that’s a fun thing to do, isn’t it? — then you gotta put everyone somewhere. The position at which they played the most seems to make the most sense to me. YMMV.
Now with 33% more Kavula
by Humma Kavula on Dec 21, 2010 9:11 PM PST up reply actions
It seems an unneccesary construct to me
but as you say YMMV…
To me, A-Rod will probably end up with a career better than Mike Schmidt, but I don’t think that makes him a better overall 3B. Especially if you want to use WAR, A-Rod gets extra benefit during his SS years for being at a position with less of an offensive baseline than 3B.
A-Rod in the end just kind of is. A great player, not the best at SS, not the best at 3B, but damn good at both, and damn unique, and a great story.

I have a friend (no, really. I do!) Russ stephans, who went to Arizona State, got drafted by the Royals, and in a year and a half was at Omaha (AAA). He was a catcher, about 5’-11", 195, and was the fastest sonofabitch I ever saw. In August of ‘85, the Royals called him up in late August, and they were going to play the Angels in Anaheim. We all went down there to see him, but he stayed in the bullpen, until the7th or 8th inning, when there was a hit batter, and both teams ran onto the field. Naturally he ran in from the bullpen to get in the middle of it, only to be stopped by Ellis Valentine, who said “Fight’s over, boy”. Calmly, he said "Oh, I’m not after your guys, Ijust wanna spike my catcher so I can get in the game!"

5) Los Angeles Dodgers. You watch. Young left-hander Clayton Kershaw is going to explode in 2011 to become a serious Cy Young Award candidate. He’ll be just 23 on Opening Day and last season was 13-10 with a 2.91 ERA. In 204.1 innings, he gave up only 160 hits and struck out 212. He’s scary good and the Dodgers have surrounded him with dependable veterans like Chad Billingsley, Jon Garland, Ted Lilly and Hiroki Kuroda.

My belt holds up my pants and my pants have belt loops that hold up the belt. What the f*ck’s really goin' on down there? Who is the real hero?
MLBTR clearly sources where it’s coming from and doesn’t reprint entire articles.
This is just a dude trying to pretend he has content so he can have ad money.

Right, he does it in a really shitty way, but he did give credit to the source. He just should have written some text about finding it here. Also, he gives no credit to the author of the article.

It’s a tragedy that (a) I have waited this long to watch Christmas Vacation this year; and (b) I can’t find my copy of Christmas Vacation right now.

yeah I wish I still had it cause they were the original Star Wars flicks. Solo shot first! etc..Hook is lame of course and Goodfellas is my favorite gangsta movie to watch along with Godfather 1/2 Of course like a year later DVD came out.

So, if you’re going to eat just potatoes and milk, you’d better also get just a little oatmeal, which has all the molybdenum you’ll need.

The news that Dodgers had cleared a spot for the 40 man roster hit me with a surprise even though a few weeks ago such issue was discussed here. I was also relieved to note that the report came out after the NPB tracker that Leach signed with the Yokohama BayStars of the Japanese Central League.

Apparently I am going on vacation
My wife woke me at 3:00 A.M. and said “Happy Birthday, we’re going on vacation”. I don’t even know where to. But I guess I am out of pocket from now until January 4th or so, so enjoy the holidays everyone!

That is awesome -- have fun!
If my wife had done that, my correct response would have been, “You’re dreaming and talking in your sleep. Go back to sleep.”
Your experience is better.

Have fun wherever you end up!
Happy trails.
I’ll be in Sta Barbara starting tonight for 6 days, but I’m sure I will be online at times.
