Dodgers Make Room For Guerrier On 40-Man Roster; Leach On His Way To Japan?

The Dodgers cleared a spot on their 40-man roster for reliever Matt Guerrier on Tuesday when pitcher Brent Leach was designated for assignment, per Dylan Hernandez of the LA Times. This comes a day after a report from NPB Tracker that Leach signed with the Yokohama BayStars of the Japanese Central League. This is presumably similar to the situation with Eric Stults, who was sold to the Hiroshima Carp for $400,000 at the end of spring training earlier this year.

Leach is a 28-year old lefty who filled in for a few months in the 2009 Dodgers bullpen, putting up a 5.75 ERA in 38 games, mostly as a left-handed specialist. In 2010, Leach, who had pitched in relief for the better part of four years, converted back to a starter in Double A. He was 7-3 with a 4.57 ERA in 13 starts for Chattanooga in 2010.

Here is a look at the current Dodgers 40-man roster:

I included the options for the applicable players. Some players, like Broxton, Kemp, Ethier, and Billingsley, for instance, have options remaining but it has been more than three years since their MLB debut. They would have to be exposed to waivers before being optioned, so in the extremely unlikely event they would be optioned, they would be claimed by several teams anyway, so it's a moot point.

Players with five years of service time have the right to refuse assignment to the minors, so in the event that the Dodgers would want to demote Dioner Navarro, he would have to approve the move.

I thought Mallet was bad this year

apparently I was wrong. Maybe I’m thinking of another QB(besides Locker) who had first round talent, stayed for 2010, and was not good?

In theory the Texans taking a CB in the first round seems plausible

but it won’t happen. They need a CB who can step in immediately. Also a FS as Eugene Wilson is one of the worst players in the NFL now, so they where right on that.

Thats what they said about Kareem Jackson

there is a long history of even the top CBs in the draft not being good enough to start in their first year, and very few who have pulled it off. After going through it this year they are going to want someone with experience.

You're not kidding.

One of the biggest smackdowns I ever got was as a freshman in college. I went to see “In the Soup” at the Coolidge Corner theater in Boston (well, Brookline). The guy who was the program director at the theater gave an intro referencing Cassavetes.

After the movie, I walked up to the guy and asked about Cassavetes, since I didn’t really know who he was… he said, “You can’t call yourself a film student without knowing who Jiohn Cassavetes is.”

At the time, I completely missed the snide tone of voice in his voice — just took it as inspiration to get cracking and see some Cassavetes movies. Looking back on it, though, he was telling me to get lost.

Toward the end of the Dodger season, the Times cut a lot of the Dodger space in the paper generally because of lack of interest. Dylan Hernandez and/or Jim Peltz had less and less space to fill as the season wore on, and the FYI column was eventually cut as well.

Newspapers had a license to print money. When I got to the times it was assumed you traveled first class when you traveled. That’s how much cash they were throwing off. They could afford 1600 person newsrooms and still make 25% profit. Compare it to the Grocery biz, where 3% profit is considered wildly profitable.

Now, they still get the profitability but mostly from slashed payrolls and expense cuts.

They’ll keep those numbers as long as my generation is around I suspect.

In 1990, he won a Pulitzer Prize for Commentary for his 1989 columns, and the Baseball Hall of Fame awarded him the J. G. Taylor Spink Award in 1987. Cited as an influence by countless sports journalists, Murray was a fixture at the Los Angeles Times for over 30 years. After he won the Pulitzer in 1990, Murray modestly said he thought the prize winner should have had "to bring down a government or expose major graft or give advice to prime ministers. I enjoyed this article

by Scott Merkin of MLB.com regarding the White Sox and their deal with Paul Konerko. The article is a bit fawning over Chicago Assistant GM Rick Hahn, but it had a nice overview of the details of a deal being struck, and the dynamics of an assistant GM and his relationship with the GM and owner.

“Jerry [Reinsdorf] was more involved in expressing the desire to have Paul back,” Hahn said. "He didn’t want to have any part of the negotiations in terms of dollars and length.

“In Jerry’s ideal word, he gives us a payroll to work with and we allocate it as we see fit. Things I didn't know until now

A-Rod needs 16 starts at the hot corner to reach 1,000 starts for his career. He started 1,256 games at SS earlier in his career. He will become the first 1,000-1,000 3B/SS in MLB history.

Toby Harrah is the only other player in MLB history to even play 800 games at both 3B & SS (1,050 starts at 3B, 751 starts at SS).

The only other 1,000-1,000 infielder in MLB history is Rod Carew, who played 1,184 games at 1B (1,153 starts) and 1,130 (1,071 starts) at 2B.

I mean career values. Schmidt’s (or whomever’s) whole career vs Arod’s. Arod’s games at ss count… call Arod a 3B cause thats where he has the most games.

Schmidt had an 18-season career and retired with WAR of 108.3.

A-Rod has played 17 seasons and has a WAR of 101.9 for his career (which obviously includes all of his games at SS). He will be 35 next year.

Let’s assume he plays another five years or so, all (or the vast majority) at 3B. When he retires, he will rank as the #1 3B of all time.

For what it’s worth, the #1 shortstop of all time played 21 seasons and retired with a WAR of 134.5.

Anyway

I don’t know how you can combine a man’s totals at SS and 3rd base and declare him the best 3rd baseman of all time when he may end up with slightly more games at 3rd then SS when he’s done.

Would Rod Carew be considered one of the best 2nd baseman even though he ended up playing a large % of his games at 1st base?

Robin Yount at SS even though he played a good % of his games in CF?

If that’s good enough for Bill James, it’s good enough for me. If you want to rank the greatest players of all time by position — and that’s a fun thing to do, isn’t it? — then you gotta put everyone somewhere. The position at which they played the most seems to make the most sense to me. YMMV.

Now with 33% more Kavula

by Humma Kavula on Dec 21, 2010 9:11 PM PST up reply actions

It seems an unneccesary construct to me

but as you say YMMV…

To me, A-Rod will probably end up with a career better than Mike Schmidt, but I don’t think that makes him a better overall 3B. Especially if you want to use WAR, A-Rod gets extra benefit during his SS years for being at a position with less of an offensive baseline than 3B.

A-Rod in the end just kind of is. A great player, not the best at SS, not the best at 3B, but damn good at both, and damn unique, and a great story.

I have a friend (no, really. I do!) Russ stephans, who went to Arizona State, got drafted by the Royals, and in a year and a half was at Omaha (AAA). He was a catcher, about 5’-11", 195, and was the fastest sonofabitch I ever saw. In August of ‘85, the Royals called him up in late August, and they were going to play the Angels in Anaheim. We all went down there to see him, but he stayed in the bullpen, until the7th or 8th inning, when there was a hit batter, and both teams ran onto the field. Naturally he ran in from the bullpen to get in the middle of it, only to be stopped by Ellis Valentine, who said “Fight’s over, boy”. Calmly, he said "Oh, I’m not after your guys, Ijust wanna spike my catcher so I can get in the game!"

Apparently I am going on vacation

My wife woke me at 3:00 A.M. and said “Happy Birthday, we’re going on vacation”. I don’t even know where to. But I guess I am out of pocket from now until January 4th or so, so enjoy the holidays everyone!

That is awesome -- have fun!

If my wife had done that, my correct response would have been, “You’re dreaming and talking in your sleep. Go back to sleep.”

Your experience is better.

Have fun wherever you end up!

Happy trails.

I’ll be in Sta Barbara starting tonight for 6 days, but I’m sure I will be online at times.

There's no need to fear, Underdog is here! / Broncos/Dodgers/Lakers fan in Niners/Raiders/Giants/Warriors country, and damned proud of it.

Enjoy!

But, did she put a bag over your head so you can’t tell where you are going?
